Word Processing to Page Layout???

I've just a whole 100 page document in word processing (with lots of pictures). Is there any way that I could change the formating of the document from 'word-document' to 'page-layout' after the fact? Like with ONE click maybe?
Or am I dreaming?

What benefit do you expect to get from this?
I think I can see a potential benefit. If you could easily put your text in full page text frames throughout the entire document, you could then go back and adjust the frame size on certain pages, where the layout requires it.
We may do all these tasks in the WP mode.
Linked text blocks are our friends.
We can do it, yes, but not easily. If you have a hundred pages, you need to connect one hundred text boxes by hand. In InDesign, you basically just shift-click once, and all the one hundred pages are created with linked text boxes in just a few seconds.
It would also be a way to easily create blank pages in the middle of the document.
Insert two page breaks do the trick.
It works, if you do not care where the blank page is. But if you want page 14 to be empty, two page breaks will not do it, as you do not know how the text will float around. In word processing mode, my spontaneous solution would be to insert a white floating picture that covers page 14, and make sure the text wraps around it.
InDesign has simpler solutions for this, but then it costs almost ten times as much as Pages.
In France it costs quite 13 times the price of the complete iWork package !
Indeed.
Adobe's pricing policy is btw a mystery to me. InDesign's French version costs 1030 euro, but the English version is only 910 euro, even if you buy it in France. Do they really have to charge you 120 euro for speaking French?
Put another way, for the same price as one French copy, you can buy the English copy + iWork (in both French and English and a bunch of other languages) + dinner for two.

  • Combining word processing and page layout templates

Does anyone know how to (or if it's possible at all) merge or combine a Pages 09 document set up on the "Pages Layout" template with one set up on "Word Processing" template properly? Can these two templates "talk to each other"?
I'm trying to combine some of my separate class notes for my students into one file, and some were created in Page Layout, with visuals, charts, pics, etc. I also have some Word Document notes that I'd like to merge with the other notes to create one "class notes" file for my students. But I can't seem to do that, for some reason. I can copy individual pages from the Page Layout notes and paste them into my Word Document notes, but they paste as two pages (one page is blank). When I delete that page, the other one is deleted, too. I can't copy and paste from the other direction (word doc to page layout) at all, and like I said, the other way is a little off, as well.
Any ideas, or is this just not possible in Pages 09? Thanks.

    Re: Jerry
I'd like to stay in one or the other, but I just like features that are only in one or the other. For example, I like in WP mode that when I get to the end of a page of writing and keep going, a new page appears (with formatting and layout intact on the next). If I'm in PL mode and writing in a text box, it just goes beyond the viewable screen. I also like the ability to select and move around individual pages in PL mode, and that doesn't seem to be available in WP mode (they're all stuck together and move in clumps). But you're right, I'm just going to have to stick with one and figure out some workarounds for some things I like. Since I think I'll be more in WP mode, I'll try to move stuff over from PL.
    Re: Peter
Thanks for the advice... it's already helped me try to come up with some ways to fix things. The whole click away thing to give me floating objects has been great! You're right, this does seem like a design flaw, but I suppose Apple can't be all things to all people. Still, I'd like a little more...
    Re: Yvan
Hang in there! You're right, Pages is tough when trying to use created projects in other apps! Like you said, I'm working to rebuild the layout. By the way, my PL document was 16 pages, which when transferred to WP mode doubled in size! Sheesh...
Thanks to all—I think I'm going to be able to work through this "issue" after all. I appreciate everyone's help.

  • Convert word processing to page layout

Does anyone know how to do this? I know I can create a new document with page layout but can a word processing be converted to page layout?

No, you can't convert from one document type to the other. You can, though, copy & paste from one to the other.

  • Convert from Word Processing to Page Layout?

I received a 26 page document that is in Word Processing mode, but I would like to convert to Page Layout mode.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Phil

The question is whether the WP version is just main body text or has floating text boxes and image boxes.
If it is just main body text then there is no problem. Just click in the text and Select All (cmd a).
Open a suitable Layout document and paste into a text box, then create links from that to other pages/text boxes.
As fruhulda and Jerrold have said, WP is often the better choice as it generally includes everything that Layout has, but not vice versa. You will need to think through your layout however and construct it to whatever freeform layout you may want.
My personal opinion is that Layout mode is severely challenged.

  • Pages 4.3 was a useful technical word processing program; Pages 5 is not. Does anyone know if Apple intends to improve Pages 5, at least to the level of Pages 4.3?

Pages 4.3 was a useful technical word processing program; Pages 5 is not. Does anone know is Apple intends to improve Pages 5 at least to the level of Pages 4.3?

We used 4.3 as an effective tool for thesis production but in many ways it has become kind of a simplistic joke. Sad indeed and I wish there was some evidence they were remotely concerned. PeterBreis0807's response of "No" is spot on. We will continue to use 4.3 as long as it works as a time-saving substitute for Word.

  • My word processing program (pages) disappeared.  It is not in the trash or Finder.  How do I get it back?  Thanks

My word processing program (Pages) disappeared.  It is not in the Finder or the Trash and I can no longer open the files created there.  Thank you if you can help?

Have you tried a Spotlight search (top right of menu bar)? Pages normally resides in Macintosh HD>Applications>iWork folder.
If it has somehow disappeared have you got the iWork installer disk to re-install, or if you bought it from the Mac App Store you should be able to re-download it without having to pay again.
Edited to add the 'iWork folder' klaus1 mentioned - I forgot that bit ;)

  • Word docs vs. page layout margin questions, word docs vs. page layout margin questions

I'm trying to create an e.pub document from Pages. I notice that the Word docs in the templates have tabs that cannot be made bigger only smaller. Since this book is made of images I need to get the images a little bigger then the margins allow. I see if I go to the page layouts templates the margins are bigger but they do not allow export to e.pub. So, is there a way to make the margins bigger on word docs?
Can I create mt own doc that will have bigger margins and let me export to epub?
    RD

The only way to create an epub from pages is from a word processing document, not a page layout template. If you haven't seen it, there's more informatin about epub from pages and a sample template here:

  • Create pdf from Word fails at page layout change

I have an 87 page Word 2010 (Mac) document with both portrait and landscape pages.  Acrobat 9 (Windows) converts it perfectly to .pdf.  Acrobat XI (Mac) cuts file off at page layout change.  Is this a bug or have I missed a setting somewhere ?  I could convert in chunks and then remerge, but that would be silly, especially as the Windows version copes OK.

Can you print a Word document to the "Adobe PDF" printer?
Is there an Acrobat menu in Word, and does it let you make a PDF?

  • NEW FOLDER, for word processing, like Page and others?

We're with a new IMac & iWork. We want to start a folder for docs if not also templates. It is for a word processing folder under Page, iWork and new Mac OSX.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
When you choose to save as a template they will automatically be placed in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Application Support > iWork > Pages > Templates > My Templates. This folder will be automagically created if it doesn't already exist. Of course, you can save them anywhere, but this folder lets them be seen in the template chooser.
You want to keep any documents you create in your Documents folder. You can create any number of sub-folders, even sub-sub-sub-folders. Many dialog boxes are "collapsed" by default. Click the triangle in the blue box to expand your options. Here are some other helpful (I hope) pictures.

  • Appleworks Word Processing: Cancelling Page View

Can anyone tell me how to cancel Page View in Appleworks WP? All I can find in Help is how to set it.

The Help files in AW states the following:
Note: Word-processing and presentation documents always display in Page View.
In the Window menu Page View is grayed and can't be changed. The line will not print though!

I am new to Pages. When I type, why doesn't the software capitalise the first letter of each sentence?

Try going to Pages > Preferences > Autocorrection and checking the box for capitalization.

Can anybody help me retrieve an App from itunes onto my desktop???

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. iOS apps for the iPhone and iPad can not be used on a Mac. Apps for a Mac canot be used on iOS devices. iOS and OS X are two different operating systems and the apps developed for one do not run on the other. There are two separate Pages apps, one for the Mac and one for the iOS devices. If you want to use Pages on your Mac, you will also need to buy it from the Mac App Store.

  • Switching b/w Word Processing & Page Layout

Is there a way to transfer from a doc in WP-mode to Page Layout mode?
Sorry for this very obvious question, but I can seem to find any info in the documentation or on the forum. Any help is, of course, massively appreciated.
    Cheers!

    UConn,
I'll use the same metaphor I used in another thread. Templates are like tablecloths. So when you set the table, then decide you want to change the tablecloth, you can't easily just switch over to another one. You have to remove the objects, then start over.
Whether you're in Word Processing or Page Layout mode is determined by which template you chose when you started up Pages. You can't just switch to another mode, because it's a separate template. But I've found that the major difference between the two modes is that the WP mode has a text layer, while the PL mode doesn't. If you began in the WP mode, you can just click on the page and begin typing; you can't do that in the PL mode. You have to create a text box or other object in order to place text.
    Hope this helps.

  • Master Objects in Page layout

It seems from a number of archived posts that Master Objects dont work when in page layout mode. The help menu says its possible but doesnt say how.
I think this should be considered a bug as Page layout needs master as much as word processing.
    Any thoughts?

I was hoping to use Pages for a relatively simple newsletter. Today, I started trying to learn Pages. What a disappointment! I wish to prepare a simple multi-page newsletter. master pages, and the ability to place small master objects such as logo's are important. The job really needs to be done in layout mode. And the Pages' limitation that there be one and only one page in each section of a layout document is a show-stopper. This seriously cripples the utility of master objects, and thus the whole Pages program.
To make matters worse, the Apple documentation is, I believe, very misleading. It clearly implies one can do things such as have different master object positioning in facing pages of a layout document. But, it appears one simply cannot do this with any degree of ease. (I've copied relevant text from the Pages Help documentation below, so you can judge for yourselves....)
Apple: you need to update this program, and until you do, you need to be sure the documentation accurately reflects what the program can and cannot do.
Someone please let me know if I'm wrong!
From the pages help menu: "You may want to add watermarks, logos, or other background images that appear in the same spot on every page of your word processing and page layout documents. These repeated graphics are called master objects.
If your document is divided into sections, you can put different master objects in each section. Within a section, you can put a different master object on the first page of the section and on right and left pages in the section. See Setting Up a Unique Format for a Section’s First Page and Formatting Facing Pages in a Section for more information."

  • What to use for simple page layout?

I am looking to switch my company from window's machines to macs. I have been using a mac for around a year and love it. The only program that I can not seem to find an equal substitute for on the mac platform is MS Publisher. This is shocking to me and maybe I am missing something obvious since Publisher is not all the impressive of a program. What I am looking for is a simple flyer creating program. The users needs a simple to use program that they can create a monthly calendar and some simple flyers.
What I have looked at so far:
Pages - This is really more word processing than page layout. Not easy to drag photos around and no calendar template.
InDesign - Way to complex for my average user.
Appleworks - Seems like this is a left over from the days of mac past.
Ragtime - Price. At $650 a little more than I am look to spend to create a few flyers a month.
So I was wondering what do people use for page layout?

Ooh. This is an easy one.
Pages is ferociously easy for dragging images around. I use it for promo cards and have done one flyer on it. But I've done lots of documents with images, including a book with about 70 illustrations. Pages comes with six attractive newsletter templates. More may be available at iworkcommunity.com and/or in the future. The "styles" feature (once you understand it) makes it really easy to format a newlsetter and control size and spacing of text to make it fit on a given page, in a given column, etc.
InDesign I don't know, but I'll take your word that it's complex for your average users. Appleworks isn't pretty (poor font smoothing on screen) and I never really understood it. Ragtime for $650 would violate my tightwad business sense for "a few flyers a month".
