Word Processor for Panther

Hi, I'm asking this question for my MIL who owns an older iBook with Panther.... Is there a way to get an older/compatible version of iWork for her machine at this point in time? Or is there another word processor program that we can try? Obviously, as it's been several years since she's had the iBook, she doesn't use such programs often, but she wants one now. The iWork that is available now is only for 10.4.10 and higher.

You could look for a used copy of iWork '05 or '04 on eBay. Either should work with Panther. Or you could look for a copy of AppleWorks (PPC) which also works on that model with Panther.
The commercial product, Papyrus, is an integrated productivity application that will work with Panther - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. There is also the free open source integrated suite, NeoOffice Aqua, that is available for PPC Macs and works with Panther or later. It is similar to MS Office.

Best option for a word processor for the G3 dual usb running Panther

More and more I am coming to rely on my G3 for word processing tasks - particularly research notes and a personal journal.
So far I've tried the simple text editor (quick but poor text on-screen), OpenOffice (being xwindow it's slow to load and slow to update screen) and AppleWorks (good display but no spell checker) -each have problems for me.
What is the best word processor for the G3 running Panther (or Classic/9 for that matter). I need: Quick to load/run, readable text, automatic word wrap, spell checking and a reasonable path to exchange files with my desktop Linux system.

AppleWorks does have a spellchecker; it just is not automatic (check-as-you-type).
In AppleWorks, go to Edit menu > Writing Tools > Check Document Spelling.
I've never used anything (in a major way) except AppleWorks.
A couple of options which you haven't mentioned are Pages in _iWork '06_ (or earlier; the current version has left behind G3 processors) and _Microsoft Office for Mac_.
I'm unsure of how well any of these will integrate with Linux. Open Office may be your best bet there. (I'm just guessing. It seems like common sense to me that Open Office would work with an open OS like Linux.)
Another application which is creating a buzz and sounds like it could work for you is _Google Docs_. There would certainly be no problem with Linux integration there. It looks like it would be easy sharing all the way around and you shouldn't find any incompatibilities as long as you have a decently up-to-date browser.
I'm not sure anyone has developed the "perfect" word processor, but there are some good ones out there. Good luck on your quest.

On OS X, you have some good word processors:
- Microsoft Word for Mac. Included in Office for Mac, it's the best option if you are going to use Word documents with your Mac > http://www.microsoft.com/mac
- Pages. This iWork app is similar to Microsoft Word because both are word processors. This is a good app, too, that you can get from the Mac App Store > http://www.apple.com/iwork/pages/
- LibreOffice. This free suite allows you to do everything that you can do with paid suites but with a free one. It's also open-source > http://www.libreoffice.org
You can read reviews of all of them in the Internet, but I personally prefer Pages. If you want something closest to Microsoft Word for PC, obviously the best option is Microsoft Word for your Mac

Pages is Apple's own Word Processor for the Mac, and is available in the Mac App Store. Keynote is Apple's presentation application,and is similar to Powerpoint. Apple's entire suite is called iWork and contains Pages, Keynote and Numbers (spreadsheet, similar to MS Excel)
Microsoft Word is part of the Microsoft Office suite for Mac. Most versions of Office also contain PowerPoint presentation software.
OpenOffice is a free Office suite, and a pretty darned good one and supports PowerPoint. Download here.
I have all three suites on my Mac, and I have to say since I've been using Microsoft Office for so long, it happens to be the group of apps I use the most out of the three.

Word Processor for Ibook Clamshell G3

Is there a word processor I can use with my Ibook Clamshell. It could be freeware or basic. I need it for memos, notes, letters and plan to write a book. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

WordPerfect is a word processing application. At the height of its popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was the de facto standard word processor, but has since been eclipsed in sales by Microsoft Word. Cheap but good word processor for mac?

Hey just got a Macbook today and the saleswoman said i have a 30 day trial of iwork. But after it runs out i would have to pay 80$ to buy it. Are there any word processors out there that are good and cheap? Also doesn't Microsoft Word work on Macs so I could just stick my Microsoft Word CD in and install that?

Don't overlook TextEdit.app which comes free on your Mac. TextEdit handles fonts, basic formatting, tables and spell-check well. It also saves to and opens a variety of formats including .doc (i.e. Microsoft Word).
Sure there isn't any track changes or grammar features, and it won't insert footnotes, or endnotes, and there are no built templates, no ability for mail merge or presets for labels, however, it does stay out of your way, and type.
other than that I would get the Student Edition of MS Word. Pages isn't so much a word processor as it is a desktop publishing / layout app.

Word Processor for Mac?

I didn't get the full version of Microsof Word for my MacBook mainly due to its high cost. With my PC I can use wordpad to view .doc files - I was wondering what are my options with MB. I have my resume on a disk saved as a .doc file and I would like to email it to others. Are there any programs available other than Microsoft Word - or do I have to install it.
I got MS WORD for a PC - wich I bought years ago (2002) - I guess it wont work on my Mac - unless I use Bootcamp and install WIN XP. Please prove me wrong =)

MS Office for PC won't work on your mb. But you have other options:
1. You may install bootcamp, winxp and finally MS office, if you don't mind taking so much trouble.
2. You may download CrossOver for mac and install MS office. Crossover is a software made by CodeWeaver, which allows you to run some basic Windows compatible software on mac without having to install windows. Currently, there's a beta version for mac. You may downloaded it from

3.You may download MS Office 2004 for mac test drive from http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/office2004/office2004.aspx?pid=office2004 . Unfortunately, you only have 30 days's trial.
4. You may use iWork bundled with your Mac OS to open doc file. It has a nice and friendly user interface. But unluckily, you only have 30 days trial, after which you need to purchase an activation key. Of course, there're also alternatives to purchasing a key, hee.
5. Finally, I would recommend you use OpenOffice developed by Sun Microsystem. It's a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.

Pages as Default Word Processor for .doc Microsoft Word (Office) Files

In reading the system topics, there was a nice simple help solution. Find a .doc file. Do a Get Info (CMD-I) on the file and then under the File Options choose Pages, and indicate that this works for all .doc files.
BUT... Wunderkind Apple Engineers who put ease-of-use above everything, that is still about four steps harder than going into the PREFERENCES on either PAGES or Text Edit, or even having a centralized prefs in the System Preferences Panel that lets you pick and choose what APPs run what files.
How about sticking a check box into the APP to change it over? Or is that offending the powers-that-be in Redmond so badly that they might do to Office what they did to Internet Explorer on the Mac?

CHECKBOX - .doc (Word Files)
CHECKBOX - .txt, csv (Text Files)
Do you want Pages to automatically save a Word file of your document:
PULLDOWN: In addition to creating a pages file; (Indicate where page may be placed)
Instead of creating a pages file;
And Yes, for the end-user who is new to Macs or new to computers in general, simplifying the handling of documents to a preference in the System controls would make sense. Then each App wouldn't have to do it, or could modify the central file if say Firefox wanted to be your browser/handler of choice, and asked you if you want it to be the primary control of that kind of content. Why shouldn't Pages be able to ask/set up the program easily so that the user can just get about the business of using the program? Your solution is nice, but it is still at a level that you have to be comfortable with working with files and GET INFO, which, while it doesn't phase you or me, would freak out my technophobic 14 year old daughter or my wife.

I think too that it's important to consider what the term "compatibility" really means...My experience, which honestly is limited to Quick Office Pro, is that it's fine for viewing and doing minor editing of spreadsheets, Word documents and Power Point stuff...but someone would be pretty disappointed if they bought the app thinking they could easily create complex spreadsheets or do heavy duty editing and creation of other Office document types. The iPad is oustanding at what it does, but data entry at the level required for say, complicated spreadsheet or presentation creation is still a challenge. Saving documents from mail to Quick Office is also a bit clunky. It's great for opening and looking at documents and doing minor editing, but I think a full blown, heavy duty spreadsheet, presentation and word processing app is a ways off. It's much much better than having no capability..but it is limited.....

Is there any "real" word processor for iPad?

Pages is fine for doing little posters and stuff, but not so good for real WP work. At first I thought I could just use one of the cloud WPs (google docs, Zoho, etc.), but I had some difficulty getting the keyboard to show up in Google docs.
Now I'm wondering if there is any bona fide WP available for the iPad OS? Does not have to be fancy, just good for letter writing and longer texts.

At the moment Pages is the most advanced WP currently available for iPad that can work with doc files. The iPhone version of Quickword is a nice little app but it really doesn't offer more than Pages. I'm betting there will be other decent iPad WPs soon but it doesn't appear to be soon. I haven't heard of any announcements from developers.

A simple word processor for Yosemite

Because I've got heaps of stuff in the old Pages and don't dare upgrade, I'd really like to find another application with which to write letters.

Looking for ipad word processor

I recently purchased an ipad 2 (32G AT&T version) and had a question about word processors. I am looking for a word processor for the ipad that will open, compose and save documents in ODF and all the major Word formats. Something like Bean which I use a lot on my MacBook Pro . I have also used Pages on my MacBook Pro and installed it on my ipad and it is great for some things but will not open ODF docs and will not save in all Word formats. I also installed GoodReader on the ipad which opens almost everything but it seems I cannot compose a document using GoodReader (maybe I have the wrong version--don’t know). I looked at QuickOffice but I have no use for the presentation and spreadsheet apps that come with it and would rather not load the ipad with too many things. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am sorry to tell you. I had done a lot of searches in different search engine, the answer is no. There is not an App support ODF edition for iPad.
I got another news which Google may promot the new Google Document to support ODF in future, even through this is a rumor, but you may keep an eye on it. And you would be able to edit ODF online through Google Document.

How can I find a word processor other than TextEdit?

I recently bought a word processing program called AbiWord for my imac. I just bought it cheap from the internet and thought it worth to try since I am writing a document that needs more than TexEdit can do.
