Word with keyboard viewer

Even though I have selected U.S. English and Spanish in international system preferences so that the flag symbols appear in the menu bar, when I use Word or AppleWorks, the keyboard viewer will not change to Spanish. The flag of Spain appears in the menu bar, but the keyboard viewer continues to display U.S. English. In the Finder, the keyboard viewer changes languages as it should. If I switch to Word or AppleWorks, it inexplicably reverts to U.S. English, but I want the keyboard viewer to function in Word or AppleWorks. How do I fix this?

Since there's been another 6-month delay since the last posting on this thread, I'll add my plea for some solution to this problem. tyrollifer's stop-gap method is a helpful suggestion, but could someone offer a solution that allows live feedback using the keyboard viewer with Word?
I've also found the following discussions about this problem...all without any real solution. Is the only option really to stop using Word and install a different word processor?:

  • TS1381 My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).  I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, test all other keys with keyboard view (all others work)  - HELP!!

My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).
I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, & tested all other keys with "keyboard viewer" (all other keys work except for the arrow).
In addition, I have gone thru all the recommended checks with universal access and have booted from snow leopard dvd and the left arrow still does not work.
I have tried using the left arrow key in all of applications I use such as: excel, ms word, address book, calendar, iphoto, terminal, & highlighting an icon and using the arrows to move to another selected icon.
Here is the kicker!  In addition, I purchased a logitech solar bluetooth keyboard and the arrows work fine with my ipad but do not work when paired with the macbook pro. All other keys work fine on the macbook pro using the bluetooth keyboard.
I believe this says that the problem is not in my macbook pro keyboard. So where can it be?
Can anyone think of any other rabbit holes I can search?
    thanks and regards

I would also like to add that I've reverted the two cd drive and hard drive mods I did and the laptop is back to factory hardware and there is 0 corrosion or mold visible.

  • Issue with Keyboard Viewer

I won't apologize for the cross-post because even though the following got a 100 views, it generated no responses in the MacBook forum. Maybe now that Eric is back from the Super Bowl...(:>)
I'm trying to verify that Keyboard Viewer works the same in MS Word on an Intel Mac as it does on a G-4 and G-5? It works fine in Text Edit for example, but when you click in a Word doc, the keyboard reverts to English, but will create most French characters. On the PPC's, the keyboard stays in French.
I have Word 10.1.6 on all three.
I have Mac OS 10.4.6 (.8 now) on the Intel and .8 on the PPC's, but Keyboard Viewer worked fine up through Tiger updates.
I have verified preference settings in Word.
I have trashed .plist files, although the Word file does not seem to re-gen itself?
I have verified that International settings are identical.
    And of course, repaired permissions.
    Thanks for the look,
    Joe

Turns out to be a Rosetta issue.

  • How select word with keyboard

How select word in text without a mouse?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Arrow (left, right, up or down) in front of the first character of the word. While holding down the shift key right arrow to the last character (or you could go from last character right arrow to the first) release the shift and arrow key(s). The word is now selected.

  • Problem with keyboard viewer

It happened when I moved the window to the bottom of the screen while connected to my HDTV... it just suddenly became this small rectangular thing..
    See picture:

Anyone know how to revert this or fix it?

Does Window > Zoom help or is that even available? Otherwise, I dunno.

  • I want to see different font layouts in keyboard viewer

Up until Mac OS 10.4.x it was possible to look for different keyboard layouts in different fonts. This was very handy if you wanted to know, which key combination to press for a certain Zapf Dingbats character.
This feature was already limited with 10.5.x and has disappeared with 10.6.x
I want to have this feature back!
Or How Do You Manage to key in characters from fonts like Zapf Dingbats or Wingdings???
    Thanks for any help

    Hi Tom!
This is a huge step in the right direction! Thanks!
But it doesn't tell me which keyboard keys represent e.g. the aircraft or a black scissors.
With keyboard viewer I knew , what to keys to hold and what to type. In our case all of our users knew the had to press Shift - 9 (on German keyboard layout) to get the airplane. Now, with 10.6 a new ZapfDingbats , Shift-9 isn't working anymore and no way to see which keys to press.
This slows down the creation process.
So , i stick with my demand for the keyboard viewer as it was in 10.4.x -- although I love to have it as big as it can be in 10.6.x
    Thanks again

  • Ipad connecting with vmware view client v5.1. "any way to disable or hide radial virtual keyboard mouse interface as using blue tooth external keyboard"

Issue - ipad connecting with vmware view client v5.1. "any way to disable or hide the vmware view's radial virtual keyboard mouse interface" either in vmware view client settings, hidden cmds, or ipad system settings.
My client is using an external blue tooth ipad metal cover type keyboard and does not wish to have the radial keyboard / mouse visable or floating on desktop when connecting to vm with iPad using vmware view client v5.1.
i was unable to locate any settings or related toggle key/function combo keystrokes under iPad settings under vmware view client, to affect viewability of the radial keyboard/mouse. And can you kill it from service/process on vm instead of ipad? then dont allow service to restart at startup? What is the name of services that enable the radial virtual keyboard mouse - function to work?
Thanks for any and all feedback-

I'm having a very similar issue. Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Keyboard Viewer does not appear in menu bar input menu...help with 10.4.9

When I click on the flag in my menu bar, I have two options (Show/Hide Input Source Name and Open International Preferences). Is there any way to test the special characters on my keyboard if there is no keyboard viewer or keycaps application? Thanks very much.

    Hi.
Go to System Preferences/International/Input Menu and tick On Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer.
Next time you click on the menu bar flag, you'll see "Show Character Palette" and "Show Keyboard Viewer"

  • More Keyboard Viewer problems ...

Hi - I'm trying to see the Keyboard Viewer. According to help,
    1) Choose Apple > System Preferences and click International.
    2) Click Input Menu, then select the checkbox next to Keyboard Viewer.
    3) Choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu on the right side of the menu bar (the one that looks like a flag or alphabetical symbol).
#3 is where I'm having problems. I click the checkbox next to Keyboard viewer but am unable to find the 'Show Keyboard Viewer' command. I am assuming something will pop up when I do this? (Or perhaps I've already done it and nothing happens. If this is the case - then what? How do I see the selected keyboard layout?)
I'm assuming this is the way I'll be writing french words (with accents) into my document?
    Julie

    HI JCanlis,
Ok.. number 3. When you click the "flag" and see the check mark, just below that the pop up menu doesn't say: Show Character Palette and Show Keyboard Viewer? Make sure when you click on the flag to allow the pop up menu to appear and scroll down to Show Keyboard Viewer.
If you still can't prompt the Keyboard Viewer try this. Locate this file:
    com.apple.HIToolbox.plist It's here: MacinoshHD/Library/Preferences.
Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Reboot. It's ok to Trash a preference file, your Mac will create a new one for you.
Post back if you still need help...

  • Keyboard Viewer

Perhaps other people have a perspective on this problem: What is the purpose of the Font drop-down list in the Apple Keyboard Viewer?
Suppose in the Apple Input Menu the writing systems in three world scripts of the European Union are shown and suppose the Apple Keyboard Viewer is shown.
Suppose that the Apple Input Menu is set to Bulgarian and suppose the Apple Keyboard Viewer is set to a font file whose CMAP Character Map does not support the Bulgarian character subset.
For instance, if Monotype Baskerville or Apple Hoefler is selected then the analphabetic numbers are shown in antiqua and the alphabetic letters are shown in a sans serif which is presumably either Linotype Helvetica or Bigelow & Holmes Lucida (the Keyboard Viewer is not scalable and the supported scale is too small to tell the difference between designs). What is the supposed aim and is the supposed aim achieved?
    /hh

For playing with scripts not yet in Unicode, like Tengwar, I think you have a good case.
Tengwar, like Klingon, leads a life in Anglo-American twentieth century literature. Proposals to assign Elvish Tengwar and Klingon to ISO-IEC 10646 were made in 1997.
Michael Everson proposed Klingon for ISO-IEC 10646 (http://std.dkuug.dk/JTC1/sc2/WG2/docs/n1643/n1643.htm)
And Michael Everson proposed Tengwar for ISO-IEC 10646 (http://std.dkuug.dk/JTC1/SC2/wg2/docs/n1641/n1641.htm)
The Unicode Mailing List has had Klingon up for a turn, and may have had Tengwar up for a turn, too. Wikipedia has an article on Tengwar, as follows:
"Tengwar is a script that was invented by J.R.R. Tolkien. In his works, the tengwar script, invented by Fëanor, was used to write a number of the languages of Middle-earth, including Quenya and Sindarin. However, it can also be used to write other languages, such as English (most of Tolkien's tengwar samples are actually in English). The word tengwar is Quenya for "letters". The corresponding singular is tengwa, "letter"."

  • Keyboard viewer causing lock ups

Keyboard viewer is causing me some headaches. I have a handicapped user who can better use a mouse than a keyboard, and needs to use keyboard viewer. However, after enabling keyboard viewer, if they user logs out of the computer, and logs in again later he gets constant pinwheels. The keyboard viewer does not show up, but if I look at the international menu it gives me the "hide keyboard viewer" option.
If I open up a terminal and run top, I see that every time I click on something, move a window, or interact with anything the kernal_task jumps from 1% cpu to 8% for 15-30 seconds, and beachballs. Then kernal_task will drop back down to normal levels and the system begins responding again until something else is done.
If I go to the international menu and hide the keyboard viewer before logging out, and then log back in, I am able to turn it on and use it just fine. The problem only occurs when keyboard viewer is left showing, and the user logs out. So there is a work around, but sometimes he'll forget to hide it and logs out, causing problems next time he logs in.
This only occurs when using mobile accounts. If set up a local account on the computer, it isn't a problem. If I remove the computer/account from all management and synchronization it still happens. It will occur on any computer the user logs into if they enable keyboard viewer.
    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for that BDAqua,
I will take a look at that software. I am little reluctant to go third party in that I am a student and can't dictate which Apple mac I am using at my college. They frown on installing third party software. So I am really looking for a solution that is already on the OSX. I tried sticky keys but I can't seem to make it work on the Keyboard Viewer. (I am also surprised that the caps lock does not work normally on Keyboard viewer). I can't believe I am the only one that has only mouse input of text!
So my question remains, will modifier keys be operable with a single click on Keyboard Viewer, and will a macro key be operable /definable for specifically modifier keys in keyboard viewer?
    TIA

  • My keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random.

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.
