Word X Slow

I have a MacBook, 2Ghz, 512MB.
When I open Word X, it is excrutiatingly slowwwww. If I try to go from one application, like Mail, back to Word, it takes about 20 seconds. This can't be right. I might have another app open, like Camino or Palm Desktop, but that's it. If I upgrade to the new version of Office, will this problem go away?
It seems that my computer, in general, is slow, which is negating the reason for buying a new one in the first place!
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
J

Hey J,
First off... you are trying to run Word under Rosetta, which will be slow. Second, you only have 512m of RAM. Word will run faster when it is in UB code, but you really do need at least 1gig of RAM.
I would suggest you can also try out Pages, which came as a sample software with your MacBook. It is pretty cool, cause you can convert documents you made in Pages to Word compatible files to share with those that don't have Pages. And Pages will open Word documents you get from other people.
Good Luck.

  • Microsoft word 2008 slow save with iMac 2009 and yosemite

I have microsoft word running on 4 different iMacs, all using Yosemite.  My 2008 iMac 2009 iMac  and 2014 retina display iMac all save word docs quickly.  My 2011 iMac saves word docx and word doc documents slowly.   All machines are basically the same.  Memory is not the issue.  I am running same updated version of word 2008 in same configuration.  I reinstalled word on 2011 slow save iMac to no avail.  problem started after upgraded to yosemite.  i have 12 gigs of ram as i thought ram was issue.  Any thoughts welcome. Are others noticing same problem?

There has been a better and free alternative to old versions of MS Word and MS Office since forever. Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 is the latest version of a free and complete All-In-One document processor, spreadsheet, drawing, presentation, database, & formula software, found here: http://www.openoffice.org
It also reads, writes and translates MS Word, saves in many formats, and is pretty easy to use. It's entirely modern and compatible with all the latest Mac operating systems. Good luck.

  • MS Word - very slow with Yosemite

Microsoft Word, I have found, is very, VERY slow on Yosemite. Saving takes AGES.

Hi - I am running Office for Mac 2008 v12.3.6 and find it is very slow to save documents. This is both a manually triggered ave or the autosaves that occur form time to time. I have ForeverSave2 v2.1.2 running but enabling this or not seems to make no difference. When a save occurs the progress bar shows the progress as fully complete but continues for about 15-30 seconds depending on the size of the document.

  • Pasting from Word ridiculously slow

Hi I wonder if anyone has had this problem:
When I paste from Word (Word 2004 for Mac) to ID 5 it takes a ridiculously long time--maybe a full mintue for 10 lines or so.
I am a book designer and going back and forth from Word to ID all day long--this is driving me crazy (it only started in the past month or so).
I often PLACE (which is also very slow, but it makes more sense since it brings in the formatting) but sometimes I need to PASTE short bits of text and it is excruciating!
Anyone else have this trouble? Know how to fix it?
    Any suggestions, much appreciated.

Thanks for responding, Gail. Yes, I am copying and pasting properly. I had no problem whatsoever pasting Word into Mail until I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion.
As far as the other question goes, I will put off taking a lot of time trying to get through to Microsoft Word for as a long as I can!
    Leslie
Just tested. No problem with cut & paste here from Word to Mail. Using Office 2011 (14.3.2) which opens all my old word files. You could try Pager or OpenOffice to try to open your old .docs if you wish, but I would try uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office first. Should not be acting like this, and have never had a copatability problem.

  • Word crashes, slow functioning = imminent death?

My wife's ibook G3 has been having serious performance issues. It often performs even the most routine tasks in an astonishingly slow way. Word, especially, has been crashing often and unpredictably..
We have MacJanitor and Onyx and run them regularly (too often, in fact, out of desperation). I also do the disk-utilities permissions evaluation and correction thing. The problems persist. In an ominous sign, the hard drive is unusually audible and its sounds are not entirely healthy.
I replaced the battery on the iBook G3 a few months ago, after it basically died, but these other problems are persistent.
Is this G3 headed to the graveyard, or are there other steps to take? I thought of taking it in to a "genius desk" at a Mac store, but wonder if that's worth the trouble.

Did you follow the links in my above post?
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer, even, than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
If the iBook has less than 5 to 6 GB of available hard drive space, things can become sluggish.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
The above tells you one way to deal with crashing and slowness, and also tells you how to figure out how much hard drive space you have remaining. The links appear in the identical post earlier in this thread.
Did you copy things over to the DVD without deleting them? If so, they are still there on your hard drive, taking up space.
If you deleted the items you copied to DVD, did you remember to empty the trash? The hard space is not regained until the trash has been emptied.
I would recommend a bit of hard drive maintenance before attempting to add another application (browser) to your hard drive.

  • Word 2013 slow to open documents from SharePoint 2013

    Hi all,
Word 2013 running on a Windows 8.1 client is take 2 or more minutes to open a document from SharePoint 2013. Excel takes less then 10 seconds from the same site in SharePoint.
I have remove all proxy configuration from IE, clear the Auto Detect Settings. Added the URL's to the intranet zone and disabled all IE addons. I have also performed a reset on IE, reinstall of Office and tried a number of workstations. All have the same
issue. The document just take forever to open.
Checking with Fiddler, I can see 3 requests hit the SharePoint server then nothing... after a few minutes the document opens.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Craig

    Hi Craig,
For troubleshooting your issue, please take steps as below:
1.Open IE, go to "Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings" and uncheck "Auto Detect Proxy".
2.From the File tab in Word application, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for
    Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
3.Edit the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.
Also please have a look at the article:

  • Saving documents on Microsoft Word is slow w new 10.9.2 update

    Hi,
I use Microsoft Word constantly and immediatley after I updated to 10.9.2, I noticed that some commands are very slow. Copy, paste, and especially the save commands takes about 1 minute to actually save. When I click save the computer freezes for a while and the wait color wheel is slowly saving my work. Ive had my Mac for 3 years and have never had issues with it until now. Please help. Thanks!

Try booting to your Recovery partition by holding down the Command and R keys and starting up. Choose Disk Utility and repair the disk. See if that helps.

  • Typing on Microsoft Word is slow...

    Hello,
When I'm out and about typing up essays/reports/papers on my iBook G4, I'll start to notice a typing 'lag' of sorts. I don't know how to describe it but typing on Microsoft Word seems much slower and less responsive then when I type something in while surfing the web on Safari or writing an email in Mail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. For what its worth, my iBook has the 1.33 GHz G4 processor and I added 512mb of RAM for a total of 1GB. It's only this specific program I'm having issues with.
    Thanks!

I had the same problem and then noticed that it was only slow when I was running on battery. Try going to your battery settings up at the top right, and clicking on "better performance." apparently if you choose "better battery life" it slows the processor down to cut power consumption.
    Hope that helps.

  • Cs3 word count slow

the word count in my indesign cs3 takes several minutes to calculate a 120 000 word document. i never had this issue with cs2. (apart from changing from cs2 to cs3, i've upgraded from tiger to leopard, and upped the ram on my imac g5 from 768mb to 2gb).
    any ideas?
    william

There doesn't seem to be a problem getting the word count via a script. The Applescript below returns the total word count. I tested it on a doc with 28000 words and it returned the count instantly on my MacPro.
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    tell active document
    set wordcounts to {}
    tell every story
set wordcounts to wordcounts & (count every word)
    end tell
    set total to 0
set totalstories to count every item of wordcounts
repeat with i from 1 to totalstories
set total to total + (item i of wordcounts)
    end repeat
display dialog "Total words in all " & totalstories & " stories: " & total
    end tell
    end tell

  • Microsoft Word 2013 Documents open as full version documents on two computers sporadically

    Hello,
We have a customer site with a perplexing problem that occurs very sporadically.
Our customer has a large word document called “Green Book” that tracks all customer jobs, new, pending and completed in a large tabled document that can sometimes span up to 300 pages. Yes we are aware we probably should convince the customer to run an Access
database but have not had the expertise in-house to date to date to do this but that is off the scope of this topic for now….
The problem that is driving our customer (and us) nuts is that user A will open Green book quite happily, user B will turn up to work some 3 hours later and get a full read / write version of the document. If user B opens up the document immediately or within
a few minutes of user A the document will predicably come up with a “this document is in use by user xx” and give the end user an option to open the document as read only which would be fine if only this would work that way every time.  Having a second
user open Green book inadvertently as read / write creates pandemonium when two users have conflicting edits to the document as they both think they have the original.
Every time our techs have been onsite we’ve been unable actually reproduce the problem for ourselves mainly because we seldom get three spare hours to wait and the office is flat out during business hours with end users reluctant to spare their machines
    at the best of times…
The problem extends only to this file, no connectivity problems to other files, email or internet surfing have ever been reported so can only assume the core network is solid.
In a nutshell here is a summary of our customer’s network configuration that was part of a network upgrade done at the beginning of May this year:
N.B. all hardware (BIOS / firmware), operating systems and software has all been patched up to the latest possible versions both on desktop and server level.
    HP Proliant ML350 Gen8 Server – 48 GB RAM, 2 TB RAID 10 10K SAS drives on a smart Array P400i
HP server runs Microsoft HyperV 2012 R2 (latest updates applied)  and runs two guest OS:
SBS 2011 Server (32 GB RAM) that acts as File Server (that originally shared Green Book) / Exchange server
Windows Server 2012 R2 – RDS / Terminal Server (12 GB RAM) (this server now shares Green book)
Trend Micro Worry Free Advanced Version 9.0 in use with real time scan disabled on servers but enabled on desktops.
New late model HP Procurve Gigabit switch installed.
Desktop Computers are HP EliteDesk 8300 Computers running Windows 8.1 Pro / Office 2013 Home and Business on 4 GB RAM.
In a nutshell here is a summary of the troubleshooting steps / workarounds all unsuccessfully attempted to date:
Ensured Green Book from is saved in latest DOCX format not legacy .DOC format
Turned off server auto-disconnect (done on server not workstations) after 15 minutes feature on  Windows server to rule out disconnected sessions giving User B’s computer a false impression it is the only user with access to Green Book
          http://  Support.microsoft.  com/kb/297684
With above setting in effect I’ve instructed an end user to leave a document open for over an hour and do a
net files command on the SBS file server to confirm that user A still had a session lock on that file (which they did) to rule out a disconnect giving user B’s computer a false impression it had an exclusive access lock on the file.
Opportunistic locking on server has been disabled.
Setup a dedicated server with a connection limit of one user at a time to each of these “sensitive files”. Quickly abandoned this as it was more trouble than  it was worth getting user to close Word to release file lock despite document being closed.
Moving Green book from SBS  server to a shared folder on Windows 2012 R2 terminal server (no auto disconnect parameter set). Still has the same problem!
In desperation I’ve setup remote desktops for all affected users and put shortcuts on desktop a local C drive copy of Green book. Because it looks different to their desktop and Word is slow anyway users objected and I was forced to allow end users again
to open green book again from their individual servers.
What did the customer run before and what were the issues with Green Book?
Customer ran a Dell PowerEdge T300 Server with 8 GB of RAM and 600 GB mirrored SATA drives on SBS 2008 and Dell workstations running Windows XP SP3 / Office 2007.
Green Book was always slow because of Word being very slow with 300 + pages of tabled information.
No file sharing / locking issue as reported above was ever reported.
If anyone can share any experiences on this or shed any light on the problem we would be eternally grateful…

I quoted this from your cross-post, by MVP Paul Edstein.
"Your description suggests a network problem, with the
networking software losing track of the fact the file is already
    open.
That said, you might find it useful to store documents intended for
shared editing in a OneDrive folder. This is designed to allow two or more
people can edit a word document concurrently.
    Once you have OneDrive
operational, click OneDrive in the header of a SharePoint or Office 365 site,
then click the ellipsis (…) to the right of the entry. Then click ‘Share’ and
invite the other user to view or edit the document, and click ‘Share’ once more.
To add to the list of people already sharing a document, click the ‘Shared with’
icon in the ‘Sharing’ column and invite the additional person to view or edit
the document, and click ‘Share’ once more.
    When someone invites you to
share a document, you’ll typically receive an email notification with a link to
the document. Clicking the link opens the document. If you have edit permission,
    your changes are automatically saved.

Uninstall the Symantec Antivirus, it's useless and slows down the mac.
There's also a process called "defaults", which I can't seem to find the origin. If never seen a process named like that. Maybe someone else knows. It might be linked to the symantec though.
Also, either disable Time Machine, or set it up again, because it's not working.
More over, a system preference file is constantly crashing called "cfprefsd", which is linked to an app using a Cocoa Framework (I might be talking Chinese to you, but some may understand). I can't find any help regarding this particular crash, but reinstalling OS X should solve the issue (To reinstall OS X, follow the steps described on this support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18872 )

  • Word order in searches matters?

I am fairly new to FCS ... but have a simple question.
I have some assets named "Ukraine Gypsy-1" and "Ukraine Gypsy-2" (no quotation marks in the actual names). I do a very simple search, typing in the words ukraine and gypsy (no quotation marks, no 'and', just the two words). I do a "contains" search. Depending on the order that I enter these two words (separated by a space), the search either works or does not, as follows:
    If I type:
    ukraine gypsy
    the assets are found.
    If I type:
    gypsy ukraine
    the assets are NOT found.
I didn't think order of words entered should matter, as long as you don't use quotation marks. What am I missing here?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Thanks, I will try that. Yes, that does work. It's confusing, as "contains" implies that the words, if contained anywhere in the metadata, will result in positive search results. The manual says to do multiple search words, one just enters them separated by space. But your explanation helped me make better sense of it than I could via just the manual!
Manual says "contains" finds more results, and "match word" is faster. In my experience, "contains" found less results, and "match word" was slower! When I did "contains", I got less (no) results; when I did "match word" I got more results - backwards from what the "more" and "faster" implied.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • My keyboard is working slow

when typing the words are slow in showing on the screen

More information would help. What computer do you have - iMac, Macbook Pro? Keyboard - USB, wireless, or built in?

  • Slow opening of files

When I open a raw file the first time I open CS5, it takes about 30 seconds.  Subsequent files are quick.  Has anyone had this problem?

From memory I believe there were a few things that changed, both in Windows 7 and Office 2010 that can have an impact on the time taken to open a document over a network connection. They mostly relate to additional protections designed to scan the document
for anything dodgy before opening, but in the case of Office, since it does the scan over the network it takes longer to open a network document than older versions, or than opening it locally.
There's a long thread discussing this here
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/46c082ad-2455-4120-beea-c69ff2219ed9/word-2010-slow-opening-files-on-network-share?forum=officeitproprevious which is worth a look. There are several things which may cause this (depending on your
setup), so hard to judge what it might be in your case.
Since you say that copying the files over the network works correctly this sounds like the issue. Presumably once on the local machine you also don't see any speed issues opening the documents on the newer setups?

  • My iMac is getting very slow. What can be done?

My iMac is getting very slow opening Safari or Word, even slower opening iPhoto. I have an anti virus and I have deleted all cookies, emptied the cache ...
What can I do to regain the normal speed? Thanks for your tips.

Hello and Welcome back to Apple Discussions.
One thing many users overlook is maintaining at least 15% of your HDD space free to allow correct operation of the iMac. Back-up data to CD/DVDs and delete large files until you have at least 15% free.
You could also consider a RAM upgrade if you are running more intensive tasks than previously - 256Mb isn't much, and not is an extra 256Mb.
In the extreme, and something I might do every 12 months or so, is to do a complete back-up of all important data and then erase everything and re-install a fresh OS.
