Work around for streaming movies from time capsules/attached external HD

Can someone tell me how you can stream movies to iPhone/iPad/ATV3 from external HD attached to time capsule via an app or other method ?

This is just a general comment.. There are no apps for TC.. it is not a media player, so it cannot stream to anything.. if you store media files on the TC there has to be a player.. So you have to use a computer.. or possibly the ipad.. which will need a file browser app and a player app, but you do not stream to it.. you stream from it.

  • Streaming movies from Time Capsule to Apple TV without opened iTunes Library

    Hello !
It is possible to streaming movies from my Time Capsule without using Mac or iPhone like streaming device
For example ( I am using Time Capsule for movies Libary, Apple TV for streaming movies, but when i have MacBook Pro off, my iTunes Libary is off and i can't  streamimg my movies directly)
It is possible streaming Movies on my Apple TV without opened iTunes on my Mac ? I mean if it is possible streaming directly from TC to Apple TV, when Libary it on TC.
    Thank you for your answears.

    Hi,
you can stream from the Time Capsule, but must always have a player in the middle, either an iOS device or a mac compatible with video airplay.
If you want to use an iOS device, you can get the app FileBrowser. This allows your device to stream videos from the timecapsule, play them, and play on the AppleTV.
As erfurtivo said, O!play works perfectly with the TimeCapsule, if you don't want more devices in-between.
    Hope this helped

  • How to backup from Time Capsule to external HD?

How to set up files backup from Time Capsule to external HD?
Here is configuration: MacBook + MacAir + Time Capsule (which I use as a storage) + 2Tb WD MyPassport (USB connected to TimeCapsule)
I keep files like photos on TimeCapsule to be available by WiFi and I want to set up my Time Machine to backup picture folder from TimeCapsule to MyPassport HD.

Time Machine can't back up a network volume. You'll have to use third-party software. I don't have a specific recommendation. There is no efficient way at all to back up a Time Capsule, which is why it should only be used as a backup destination, not as a general-purpose file server.

  • HT4628 Airport on Mac is searching for Wi-Fi from Time capsule. I can get into my back-up, but internet. Modem is fine( I can get online with Ethernet cable). I was told it is a difference in IP addresses ( outgoing from modem and streaming from capsule).

What might be a problem with IP addresses? I did contact Time Warner Cable about my service, there is no problems at the modem until it gets to Time Capsule. I have everything in the house running off of wireless, now nether asset is working. I was  able to connect to Time Capsule wirelessly, but Internet is no go. Any ideas? Thank you!

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule) (Note: Performing this type of reset will NOT affect any data stored on the Time Capsule's internal HDD.)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Can you stream movies from time machine to apple tv

Can you stream purchased movies from Apple Time Machine to Apple TV?
I have both an Apple TV and an Apple Time Machine. Both great devices BUT my internet connection is not great and apparently, the telephone exchange needs to be upgraded in order for it to improve and right now, the phone company has no plans to upgrade the exchange . So, I've bought movies from Apple TV and have downloaded them (using Apple TV) and watched them. They seem to stay on Apple TV for a few days before they need to be downloaded again if I (actually my kids) want to watch the movie again. Problem is, it takes about 15 hours to download a regular movie due to the poor internet connection. My kids don't have that much patience. I know I can download a movie onto my Mac and stream it from there to Apple TV but that means I have to have the Mac available. Since I work at an office and take my MacBook to use at work, it isn't always there for the kids to get their daily Frozen hit. See the issue I face? Apple TV and Apple Tme Machine are great devices. Can they be used in conjunction with one another?
So, what I was wondering, is it possible to stream from Apple Time Machine to Apple TV, i.e. use Time Machine to store your movies for Apple TV?
    Thanks
    Philip

    No.
    Time Machine is an application.
Time Capsule is hardware (what you have).
As suggested, you download them to iTunes and they will work fine on the AppleTV.

Yes but you need a computer running iTunes.

  • Trying to move backup from Time Capsule to external USB drive

As per the title, I'm getting rid of my Time Capsule and am trying to move the backups to an external USB drive instead.
Initially I used AirPort Utility 5.6.1 to archive to the USB drive. However, when I switched TM back on, it wanted to do a full backup rather than incremental.
I then found Pondini's very useful page at http://pondini.org/TM/18.html and decided to try it this method instead. It also made me realise that I'd incorrectly formatted the new drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when in fact the TM backup was case sensitive. So I thought this could have been the issue, but still persued Pondini's method. I formatted the drive again, this time in the correct format, and followed Pondini's guide, copying the Backups.backupdb folder from the sparse bundle to the new drive, which completed fine. But unfortunately, TM again wanted to backup everything from scratch when I turned it back on.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

So it looks like I was wrong on both counts.
I misunderstood AirPort Utility's archive feature. I failed to realise that archiving actually puts the sparse bundle in a separate folder called "Data Archive" on the new drive, so of course TM won't continue using that existing backup.
It would also seem that I was incorrect in thinking that Pondini's method didn't work. When I tried it again, I realised that TM was in fact continuing the backup. Initially it looks like it's going to do a big backup, but actually only backed up a few hundred megabytes, then everything was back to normal.
Incidentally, I've also found that if you do use AirPort Utility to archive the backup, you can effectively using Pondini's "How can I copy my TM backups to a different location?" by mounting the spare bundle in the "Data Archive" folder, then dragging Backups.backupdb to the root of the drive.
I just wanted to post this for completeness and in case it helps anyone in the future.

  • Streaming direct from Time Capsule (without a PC on)

This question may have been put forward a number of times and apologies if so. Is it possible to stream directly from a Time Capsule (or equivalent) to the Apple TV without a computer acting as an intermediary?
If so, how is this done, and if not, is it on the Apple's functionality roadmap?

No, iTunes play a key role in syncing/streaming data.
AppleTv probably does not know the location of media files, only the media type and metadata, so when selected for streaming it asks iTunes to stream the file.
I agree it would be nice to have a standalone server but they'd have to make it cost effective for anyone to buy one rather than a small computer which might be more flexible if prices were equivalent.
The NAS products out there which puport to have in-built iTunes servers are ok for sharing with iTunes on the network, but are not fully AppleTV compatible due to the need to set iTunes up with a numerical code to work with AppleTV.

  • Problems playing movies from Time Capsule

I am having a problem playing movies from my Time Capsule to my Apple TV. I can make them work but have to go through the following process: I have to play the movie through iTunes and then stop it, and then go play the movie on apple TV. I have to do this each time I want to watch one of the movies. Any thoughts on this issue?

Hopefully this information will help. I have an aiport extreme connected directly to my Cable Modem. I then setup the Time Capsule to extend the network updstairs. I have everything running on 802.11n. Wireless connection is great and I get about 13-14mb download speeds when I do a speedtest.
I must say though, copying data to the Timecapsue via wireless is slow...
I checked my apple TV this morning, and the first movie I clicked on worked great, so did the second one, then I tried a third and got the following error: "The Selected Video could not be played. The Format was not recognized"
Then I went back to play the original two that worked, and they now gave me the same error... it almost looks like it is looking connection to them, or synching or something..

  • Airport Express streaming iTunes from Time Capsule

This may seem redundant to other topics, however I have tried the solutions listed without relief. I bought and installed a Time Capsule. My internet connection comes into it and my iMac accesses it wirelessly. I have an Airport Express which I want in the living room to stream music.
I have hard reset to the default settings on the AE. My TC is set for "extend a network" and my iTunes is set-up to look for remote speakers. When I use Airport Express to set the AE to access the TC network, I get the confirmation that the AE has been reconfigured and that I can wait for the AE to restart. The Airport Express dialog box never gets past that point, leaving me looking at a spinning status wheel.
From the default settings, my Airport Utility can see both devices, but clicking on the AE dismounts the TC and vice versa. The status bar on the Airport toolbar sees my TC network and not the AE, which I assume would be normal if the AE joined the TC network. Everything up and running, my iTunes cannot see the AE and I do not get the remote speaker dialog box in iTunes.
It seems to me there should be a simple process to walk through such a generic situation. What am I missing?

I have hard reset to the default settings on the AE. My TC is set for "extend a network" and my iTunes is set-up to look for remote speakers. When I use Airport Express to set the AE to access the TC network, I get the confirmation that the AE has been reconfigured and that I can wait for the AE to restart. The Airport Express dialog box never gets past that point, leaving me looking at a spinning status wheel.
If your goal for the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is just for streaming iTunes, then you want to configure it to "join" the TC's wireless network ... not to extend it. So enabling "extend a network" on the TC would not be necessary.
To configure the AX to join the TC's wireless network and for AirTunes, please compare the following settings to those currently enabled on the AX:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing TC's wireless Network Name>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Playing movies from time capsule

I was looking for a new hard drive to back up my macbook ... the time capsule seems expensive.  I had some questions about it.
If i have the 3TB time capsule, thats more then enough to use time machine and keep it backed up.
    1.  Can I also use it as an external HD that i want to keep files on to save room on my laptop?
    2.  If I have a selection of movies that I keep on the time capsule, can I access them right through the time capsule, and have my macbook turned off?  or do I have to keep my macbook open for use of iTunes?
    Thanks for your help!

    1.  Can I also use it as an external HD that i want to keep files on to save room on my laptop?
Yes, but let's say that you move some important files from your laptop to the Time Capsule....and to save room on the laptop, you delete the files from the laptop. Now, you have only one version of those important files...and they are on the Time Capsule.
Would you really consider keeping only one version of your important files.....with no backup? In other words, what will happen to your important files when.....not if....the Time Capsule drive has a problem?
    2.  If I have a selection of movies that I keep on the time capsule, can I access them right through the time capsule, and have my macbook turned off?
    No
or do I have to keep my macbook open for use of iTunes?
    Yes
You might want to consider something like this.........add an external hard drive to your Mac and  move all of your media files over to that drive.  Then, the Time Capsule can back up both your Mac and the external hard drive......so you have backups of everything on your Mac and the external hard drive.

  • Cannot stream from time capsule attached disk to Apple TV

    Hi,
I have my movies and TV Shows on a disk connected to my Time Capsule. All these videos are present in iTunes and when I want to watch them on my Mac, everything works great. The problem is when I try to watch them from AppleTV (2nd generation). Then, I get the error "There was a problem loading this content, please try again later".
I assume the problem is caused by either one of the two issues:
    1) The disk spins down after a while when not in use and/or
    2) The disk is not mounted in Finder all the time
When I play the video in iTunes, the disk spins up, is automatically mounted in Finder, and playback starts.
When I play the video in AppleTV, nothing happens and the error occurs.
But when I first play any videos in iTunes, and then play a video on AppleTV, it works.
So, is this a bug in Apple TV / iTunes Home Sharing? Should the video not get mounted automatically as well?
What's the workaround? Force the video to be mounted all the time? How do I do this? There's not such option in Airport Utilities.
    Thanks!

You cannot if the Samsung needs DLNA server.. which is what I would expect.. Apple stuff does not support DLNA.. because it is Apple.. and therefore different.

Apple TV is not a player.. it is kind of an intermediary device.. it requires itunes running on a computer to send or stream stuff to it.. if you had your itunes library on the TC.. the computer can then stream it to the ATV and thus onto your TV..
TC is a dumb as a board storage device.. no media players.. no players of any kind media or otherwise.. just dumb storage space.
Your Mede8er 400 might be able to play files.. what formats does it play??
Have you copied files to the TC that it can read?
Have you setup the TC with full smb compliant names.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Have you setup the workgroup name as WORKGROUP and turned on the guest account to full read and write.. it might work.
Your ATV should be able to work from itunes on the windows computer and stream that to the TV.

  • How stream music from Time-Capsules hard drive via iPhone and AirPlay without any computer turned on?

Is there a possibility to stream music stored on my time-capsules hard drive directly to my iPhone and then ask the iPhone the send the music (in real-time) via AirPlay to my AirPlay compatible speakers, without having ANY computer turned on? I know that the Sonos system managed this simple task, but Apple? Any news in iOS 4.3 or 5 maybe.

As Chris says... but if the media is on an external drive as above then you also need to make sure the external drive has the same drive letter on the system you are moving to or iTunes won't be able to find the files.
