Work Instructions in Adobe

I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended on a regular basis but not in much depth. Much of it includes converting 3D model files into pdfs since they are more readily viewable. I've read a little about some of the more powerful tools and was wondering if someone might provide a little feedback about work instructions.
From what I can tell, Acrobat can be used to create forms that can be shared/modified real-time by any number of users (linked via a common network or sharepoint). I would be designing a form with data fields and possibly 3D models (to support the instructions to a user). My impression is that I would first design this in Word and then convert it to a pdf. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to integrate the information with a database and how robust this might be.
Does anyone have any experience with this and/or any links that might be helpful.

What you have highlighted in your post will, likely, tap in use of SDKs, Acrobat Javascript, IAC, and form(s) creation/maintenance.
