Workaround: 16-bit installers in Vista

If some of you have some legacy programs you like to use that used to work in XP but don't install in Vista, here's a tip.  The installer for your program may be 16-bit and Vista is an all 32-bit OS.  There are many programs that have 16-bit installers, but the program is actually 32-bit.  If you are sure that your program is 32 bit, the workaround is the following:
Install the program in XP or 2000
export the registry entries from RUN->REGEDIT that are specific to that program
import the registry entries into Vista RUN->REGEDIT
Copy the program from the installed machine's program files folder and copy directly into Vista once the registry entries are imported
Right click the program's EXE, properties, hit the compatibility tab and select the OS with the best compatibility for your application.

That is really unacceptable. I have the same problem right now. My T61 with Vista Business x32 used to be able to install programs with 16-bit installer. However, somehow, sometime, Thinkvantage updated the system and suddenly in cannot run 16-bit installers. This really piss me off.
After extensive reading, x32 windows os should be able to run 16-bit installer but not x64 windows os.
I also found out that, after killing some Lenovo/Thinkpad's native programs, the 16-bit installer runs but only to some extent. My expensive engineering software still useless.
Lenovo should test its updates more thoroughly before releasing them. Eventhough your method may work to some extent but not in my case.
So, Lenovo, appreciate if someone could look into this soonest.

  • How To Download 32 Bit PE10 for Vista 64 Bit PC?

I purchased a bundled Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 & Premiere Elements 10.  When attempting to install Premiere Elements 10 I received an error stating..
This installer does not support 64 Bit Windows XP or Vista.  If you are installing from discs pelase remove ths disk and insert disk #1.  If you are not installing from disk please download the 32-bit version of Premiere Elements 10.
I have only one disk in the bundle for Windows (the other is for the MAC OS)  Where/How can I download Premiere Elements 10 or a 64 bit installer for Vista for the disk I have.  I'm guessing my serial numbers are only valid for PE10.
    Thank you.

Thank you both B. Hunt and J. Smith for the time and thought spent on my issue.   I feel the root cause of my issue is described in my post #4 through the
    Adobe support link: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elements/kb/cannot-install-premiere-el ements-10.html
which describes the the 64bit installer not working on 64 bit XP or bit 64bit Vista PCs.  The support article further describes how to download a 32 bit version of Premier Elements 10 and install on my 64 bit Vista machine.
While the OEM version of the software seems to be a contributor to the confusion and lacking multiple discs, the support article did not suggest that it was a packaging/bundling issue, but more so an incompatibility of operating systems and software installers.   I agree that the bait and switch by the seller (picture one thing and ship another) didn't help and I will be taking it up with them (and Amazon).  That said, not seeking to pay list price for cars, appliances, or software isn't unethical, switching or not disclosing what one is selling however is unethical.
I followed the instructions in the Adobe support post and the 32 installer worked on my 64 bit Vista machine.  I stopped just short of entering the license code as I plan to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit in order to use the 64bit version of the PE10 - which I feel would perform faster.  I'd expect that the installer would work as it did for Photoshop Elements 10 on the same OEM bundle.  My fallback position is to run the 32 bit version on the Win7 64bit machine after I upgrade.
Finally, I'm a hobbyist, just looking to create a DVD capturing a recent family reunion.  That was my objective and I'm closer to achieving it as a result of Adobe Support and your contributions.  Thank you.

  • Combo installer keeps installing 64 bit on windows vista

Is there a 32 bit only installer? every time I try to install an adobe flash update it loads the 64 bit version because I am on 64 bit Windows Vista, since the 64 bit of flash doesnt work on Vista I want to install the 32 bit version of flash but it keeps forcing the 64 bit version and causing problems with flash since the 64 bit doesnt support Vista. So I dont want a combo installer but I want just a 32 bit version where can I find that?

There is no 32-bit only or 64-bit only installer.  On 64-bit systems it will install both 32-bit and 64-bit players.
If you don't want to use the 64-bit player, use 32-bit browsers only.

  • For the last 3 or 4 versions of iTunes, and continuing in 11.05, the site recognizes that I have a 64 bit OS (Windows Vista) and downloads the 64 bit version of setup.

For the last 3 or 4 versions of iTunes, and continuing in 11.05, the site recognizes that I have a 64 bit OS (Windows Vista) and downloads the 64 bit version of setup. Setup installs iTunes in the 32 bit application directory (Program Files x86) - it's not all that unusual to run a 32 bit app under a 64 bit OS - BUT whenever I connect any of my iPhones, I get an error message that say I cannot use the iPhone because the 64 bit version of iTunes is not installed.  The message then tells me to de-install iTunes and to install the 64 bit version.
Like I say, the 64 bit Setup version is selected for me, and it runs error-free, but I seem to have no control or ability to force the installation of a 64 bit iTunes app.  And all the iPhones are inoperative with the 32 bit version I have.  I have another PC, which I have held at an earlier iTunes release. Although it's a notebook, it's identical in every other way (OS & installed utilities and apps) to the desktop that has developed the problem, and my iPhones work fine with it, although iTunes on it is at the earlier release, and I have no intention of upgrading that version until I understand and have corrected the problem.
    Any ideas or suggustions?
    Thanks.

This iPhone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64 bit version of iTunes.
That usually indicates that your Apple Mobile Device Support has not installed. That's also what is being shown by the diagnostics (the driver is there but the application isn't).
Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Parallels Desktop 4  - 32 or 64 bit version of Vista?

    Hello Folks!
Anyone using Parallels Desktop 4 with Vista? What have you experienced with Vista and Parallels 4?
    QUESTION:
Should I install the 32 or 64 bit version of Vista?
I am on a new MacPro computer under OSX 10.5.6

Their help files state that to install a 64 bit guest OS you need to have a intel core 2 processor.
also in the help files it state that Windows Vista® (Business SP1, Enterprise SP1, Ultimate SP1 editions) are supported.
The entry level of windows vista is not supported I guess because microsoft have forbidden its use in a virtual machine.

  • HT1923 How to uninstall itunes 32 bit and install itunes 64 bit on windows vista 64

I installed 32 bit version of Itunes by mistake on a Windows Vista 64 bit computer.  I have lots of items in my Itunes library.  Can I uninstall the 32 bit version and install the 64 bit version without loosing my Itunes library?

Yes you can without losing your music. Here is a link to a good website that helps people install and / or uninstall iTunes properly. It can keep you from going completely nuts if you are running into any problems trying to install, reinstall or uninstall iTunes! You can find step by step instructions there to help you if you can't remove or install iTunes for any reason or if it got corrupted somehow. It also has other reference links that have helped a lot of people from going completely nuts with iTunes problems: http://HowToUninstalliTunes.com

  • Nathan C Says 7.6 Works With 64 Bit Versions Of Vista!

"iTunes 7.6 or later is supported with any 64-bit edition of Windows Vista. The installer for 64-bit Vista is named iTunes64Setup.exe instead of iTunesSetup.exe. For more information see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301301"
So now you iPod Touches will work! No more returning them to Apple!

    Awesome dude,
Thanks for well described reply. I enjoyed it specially when I found out you don't work for Lenovo.
I am curious to know something. I could buy Windows 7 Bit for a very good price form Microsoft offers for university students that it probably cost me the same price as recovery media. Do you think it is a good idea to install a totally fresh windows 7 (NOT from the recovery media) on my t400s?
I am asking this because when you install operation system with provided recovery Media it builds another partition
with this name SERVICEV003 that is about 2 Gb and contains system files and stuff related to my laptop. I am afraid if I install windows without using recovery media but using Microsoft original DVDs then my laptop doesn't function properly?
What is your idea about this issue,
Thanks again for all your help, I appreciate it,

  • Firefox 32-bit w/ JRE 32-bit on 64-bit Windows OS (Vista, Windows 7)

What do people think about this?
    [http://warnerchad.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-to-java-in-firefox-3-on-vista-64.html|http://warnerchad.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-to-java-in-firefox-3-on-vista-64.html]
It describes a solution for making the Firefox plugin work for Java 32-bit & Firefox 32-bit, running on a 64-bit Windows OS. -- I can confirm that this is an issue, and can confirm that this is the fix.
I suspect it's because of the new convention for 32-bit apps (C:\Program Files (x86)\...), and the JRE doesn't recognize that Firefox is there, because it assumes it should be in C:\Program Files\... ?
Should a bug report be submitted?

How do you get the 32bit client to communicate with the 64bit Oracle instance on the same windows box? After installing the 64 bit db and client (on a developer desktop), I installed the 32 bit client to a different oracle home. I could not get it to connect to the listener - what am I doing wrong? Should I reinstall it to the 64bit home - I'm afraid that'll kill everything though.
Also, I think I'm correct in this, but not sure: any 32bit app must use the 32bit client on the 64bit box. MS Access needs 32bit ODBC, which needs 32bit client, etc.
    Thx,
    Jeff

  • Cannot get Itunes 8 64-bit installed on Vista

I'm having a heck of a time trying to install itunes. I recently got Vista 64 and I have an ipod shuffle I would like to sync up with my computer but Itunes 64-bit is not installing. It loads up the install progress bar but it instantly says it's finished installing, but nothing gets installed. This might be because I first accidetntally installed the 32 bit version of itunes, but I uninstalled it when I realized I needed the 64 bit version. The 32 bit version didn't work either. But I don't understand why the 64 bit version is not installing. I tried clearing out the temp folder but I'm just wondering if anyone else is having this problem because it seems like it works for everyone else. Please help, thanks.

Thanks, I got it working... I deleted the temp files, restarted, and tried installing itunes, but at first it did the same thing, it skipped the installation and said it was finished. Then I remembered I read somewhere someone said try renaming the default directory so I renamed it to apple/intunes/ and tried installing and guess what, it worked fine! I have no idea why the directory name would be screwing up the install but I'm pretty sure that's what the problem was because that was the only thing that fixed it. Anyways, I'm happy now, itunes is working. Now I just need a Macbook pro with 8 gigs of ram and I'll be set.

  • Kill processes (using Javascript) on a 64-bits machine (Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1)

Hi everyone. I have a simple VBScript sample that kills a process by name. It works fine on every OS, X86 and 64 bits :
    ---------------------------kill process sample----------------------------------------
    Set wsh = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
    wsh.Run "calc.exe",1
    Set Processes = GetObject("winmgmts:").InstancesOf("Win32_Process")
    For each Process in Processes
    Select Case LCase(Process.Name)
    Case "calc.exe"
    Process.Terminate(1)
I tried the "for" loop, the "forEach" loop and "switch" in javascript but none of them work like in VBScript.
Could anyone help me converting this script sample to javascript, since VBScript became obsolete and God knows whether it will be available for HTA applications and Windows Script Host files in the near future.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Jvr, you said :
"What you have done is one of the reasons why support for ActiveX is being dropped.  By allowing unsafe controls you have removed the most important security restriction.
I highly recommend that you spend some time learning Windows but not from web sites or from people who are just hackers.
If you are going to alter IE you might as well just use an HTA.  It doesn't reduce security and is much easier to use.
You are trying to do what a lot of new and untrained people try.  You are trying to reinvent Windows but mostly because you do not have fundamental technical training.  Get the training and you will not be led down these pointless paths.
NTVDM is not CMD.EXE.  NTVDM is used to emulate a 16 bit DOS environment. It is not required for NT or for CMD.EXE.  It is disabled by default on all modern versions of Windows.  16 bit applications can be a security issue and
    do make managing Windows harder."
One of the best features of IE might be ActiveX technology. I could be wrong, but some controls are still highly used by websites, and a lot of softwares help rely on HHCTRL ActiveX. I don´t see it *currently* being dropped.
Could be in the future, but not only IE uses Activex, a lot of programs make use of them, not to mention popular ones like Word, Excel.
My friend, I use Windows for more than a decade, don´t tell me what I have to learn or not. You´ve got to be kidding because I know a lot but of course I am humble to admit I ´don´t know everything and can at times have doubts, other people can help
just like I could help when someone has a doubt on something I know. Also I dont know why you are talking about hackers. As far as I know they *must* know the OS in order to exploit stuff and run their malicious code, not only know how to exploit general vulnerabilities,
so I bet the real hackers have a lot to teach.
I am not untrained, sorry but you must be high since you are not reading my posts correctly. I said I altered security setting for the *INTRANET ZONE*, not Internet, and also set the "Websites in less privileged zones can navigate to thiz zone" to deny.
And if you are an expert you must know the intranet zone is disabled by default, which is my case, but if you add an IP address or website, then it will be enabled *only* for them. Furthermore an attacker would need to know what is the IP address I added and
would need to bypass the cross site scripting filter and also the setting above that I disabled.
Again, you´ve gotta be high. I never said CMD=NTVDM. NTVDM just emulates a 16 bits program which is Command.com, I said in the other post, didn´t you read?
And you can´t tell if MSHTA, ActiveX and WSH will be totally removed from Windows in the future, it is only a possibility. They are useful. 16 bits apps are not but are still supported on 32-bits Windows. Check out on a 32-bits system, and tell me if
you found some 16-bits apps including C:\windows\system32\command.com.
Hope now you understood what I have written.
    cheers.

  • DOWNLOADED  a copy of Lightroom 6 as free software with my camera but it will not run on my 32 bit machine, windows vista and ther are no download option availble for Adobe.

How do I get someone from adobe to interact with me on this problem. So far Contact links have not lead to Adobe support person.

Adobe has been posting a warning about system requirements for Lightroom [6] a while ago. This is from that message:
'In order to leverage the latest operating system features and technologies, Lightroom 6 will require Mac OS X 10.8 or above, or a 64 bit version of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Focusing our work on more modern operating systems and architectures allows us to spend more time adding functionality requested by users, including additional advanced imaging features and improving general application performance.'
So the only way to work with Lightroom [6] is to upgrade your operating system from 32 to a 64 bit version, like Windows 7 or 8.1
A 32 bit version also will not be available. Another choice is to use Lightroom [5] in stead.
