Workaround for changing tempos in a song

Mr. Drosser wrote, about changing tempo in a song:
"You don't need to go to a different program. I did this once for a song with a slow ending, "New York New York" type: Save a copy of the fast portion of your song, lower the tempo in the copy and do everything you want to do, then mix down every track separately (you can do that "by hand" or using the track locking function), import the audio files into your original song. Of course the bar separators don't have meaning any more, but here you go with your slow part. You can still mix the tracks individually, add effects etc. And of course you only have to do that with the tracks that are tempo dependent, i.e. midi tracks and audio loops. You can do things like vocals on the whole song in one run."
"I'm aware this is only a workaround - especially continuous tempo changes are impossible that way. That's why we added variable tempo on the master track to the "wishlist"."
At the time Mr. Drosser made this reply, I did not have time to study what he said. I now think that he says to do the fast part, which is the chorus in my song, and then make a copy of that and change the tempo so that it meets my needs for slowness, then enter the notes and loops for the slow part, and then have GB render this slow part to audio. I would use the track locking function to do this, I think. I then put the audio tracks, Real tracks, into the song, along with the fast stuff. I then sing the words for the whole song, fast and slow, in one wallop and there you are! There I am!
Have I got it right, Mr. Drosser? Please correct me as needed.
Since my fast part, the chorus, is almost the same every time, I would rather like to first do the slow part and then make a copy of that, change the tempo to faster, and proceed. That would work, would it not? Does it really make any difference in efficiency as to which you do first, the slow or the fast?
And, as I said to HangTime, since this is the month of the Great Pumpkin, Gourd bless you!

Yes, I actually do mean export to iTunes, that is the only way to get audio out of GB (well, using GB anyway).
I can think of several ways to attack this, none are particularly pretty, but if I were using loops and such I imagine the steps I'd take would be something along the lines of (and I'm going to make up numbers for more of a concrete example, though these are just out of thin air):
1) Create a song at 140 BPM. Create all my parts that were at 140
2) Create a song at 96 (or duplicate my old one, etc) and create all my slow parts.
3a) I'd use the Cycle function, wrap it around each part in my slow song one at a time and Export to iTunes (I believe you said all the slow parts were the same, so you wouldn't need the Cycle part for this, justr export the single slow part. But if there were variations that's how I'd do it)
3b) I'd find those AIFFs I exported and rename them to something meaningful (Chorus1, Chorus2, Bridge...)
4a) I would do the same thing with all the fast parts (Cycle around each section and export)
4b) Same as 3b for these parts
5) Now what I have on my hard drive (and in iTunes, but this is unimportant) are a series of AIFF files which we can pretend are loops that we want to peice together. If your song was:
Verse1, Chorus1, Verse2, Chorus1, verse3, Bridge, chorus2, verse4, chours1
You'd then drag those parts, into yet a third GB project file, in that order, dropping them into a New Basic track.
6) create another New Basic Track and add your vocals.
Like I said, not pretty, but I can think of an uglier way to do it, so it's not the worst possible method.
hope that made sense.
I will not only keep my hands above the table
Good idea, I jsut opened a project file in which 8 tracks are missing (and they are gone). I'm notamused, and I'm stymied. I was sure I knew all the causes of this. Thankfully this was just a scratch take, AND I had locked all 8 drum tracks, so they still play, but the original recordings no longer exist.
I will smile when I say that.
What the heck... Barkeep, back that man up, and leave the bottle

  • Solution: Syncing with my iTunes library an endless headache: Songs don't transfer, or songs transfer and show up as "other," or I get double copies, or "Over Capacity," or stuck on "waiting for changes to be applied."

iPod Touch 5g, 64GB, iOS 7.1. After my iPod data began showing up "Other," after an abrupt disconnection from iTunes during a sync I've spent the last week trying to fix it only to be thwarted at every attempt.  I've tried resetting and restoring 6 or 7 times now, and all goes well until it gets to copying my library of music over.  What I finally figured out is that 8,000+ songs is too many for iTunes to process all at once for some reason.
After several nights of leaving it connected all night I would find that the songs had physically copied and were occupying the ~45 gb of space on my iPod's storage, but were not showing up on my local library, instead listed as "Other" in iTunes and otherwise unusuable, or they would show up, but I'd have ~45 gigs of "Other," 45 gigs of "Audio," and would be "Over Capacity," by 30 gigs or so.  OR it would be "Waiting for Changes to be Applied," for 12+ hours.
My work around:  In iTunes, under the "Music" / "Sync Music" tab, instead of syncing "Entire Music Library," select "Selected Playlists, Artists, Albums, and Genres."  You will have to indivually select the playlists, artists, albums, or genres and kept each bulk tansfer to <2000 songs at a time.  The easiest way for me to do this was by selecting one genre at a time and copying it over.  I had already taken the time to organize my library into 10 genres, you probably have more than 10.  This is irritating and time consuming, but it's better than resetting my iPod over and over and over again to no avail.
Waiting for Changes? What iTunes is actually doing when it says it is "Waiting for Changes," or "Waiting for Items to Copy."  iTunes for whatever reason does not reveal the relevent data being processed during a sync (didn't it used to?), but there are a couple ways you can decipher what it is actually up to.  The first option is on the iPod; under Settings>General>iTunes Wi-Fi Sync it will tell you what it is up to during syncing.  The other way on the iPod; under Music>Songs, scroll all the way to the bottom to see where it is at in the process.  What iTunes, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, and the bottom of the Songs library report are not always in agreement, but seeing all three will give you a better approximation of where you are in the syncing process and whether or not it is hanging.
This for me was successful as a workaround, but this is not a solution.  Apple needs to fix this crap.  Maybe they just want to make it so difficult to have a physical library of music on the local storage of the iPod that we will just give up and sign up for their Match service.

ALSO, on the iPod under Settings>General>iTunes Sync, you may need to back out of the "iTunes Wi-fi Sync," and reopen it to get it to update.
    (I use iTunes 11.1.5.5)

  • How do I change tempos in the middle of a song?

I want to go from quarter note triplet beat or 6/8 at one tempo and later in the same song, to straight 4/4 in a different tempo. Can I do this in Garage Band??

Garageband only allows for one time signature per song, but you can ignore it - so you can set it to 6/8 and later use 4/4, you can also use 4/4 loops, only the bar lines will be all over the place.
As for the tempo change, you can set a tempo curve in the Master Track. The BPM numbers always refer to quarter notes.

This bug figures out also when creating a custom spark ComboBox, then trying to programatically update the userProposedSelectedIndex property. The proposed selected index is selected, but does not apply the same skin as when mouse is on rollover or item is selected due to up and down keys.
The issue seems like updating the status of the item renderer to rollover or selected to get the same skin applied.

  • Change tempo, not track order or placement!

    Hi all!
I've got a big problem, a buddy of mine and I just recorded tracks off of his HD-recorder into Logic Express! We need to make back tracks for live use.
Unfortunately he does not remember the tempo of the songs. And we need to put a click on there. "Songs are recorded using a metronome, and drum machine".
My first thought was to take the drum track, cut tight to the first beat at the very beginning of the audio file, place it at the vere beginning of a bar, dragging all the other tracks along, to keep them in order, and change the songs BPM to fit the drum track. But when I change the arragements BPM, all the other tracks really mess up and starts to come in wrong, and so on.
What do I do to keep my track order and still be aple to fit the BPM? I've tried cutting out a slice of the drum track and using the apple + T command, but same thing happens, the tracks are knocked about like crazy.
    Thank you

That's not the concept of "tempo" in GB - it always applies to the whole song. So the loops adjust to the tempo you set, and all other regions vary their tempo if you make the whole song faster or slower.
What exactly are you planning to do? It doesn't make much sense to have the guitar playing in a different tempo from the drums ...
If you want to adjust the tempo of another soundclip (that is not a loop) to your song, there's audio editors like SoundStudio or Audacity that can do that a lot easier.

how do i get itunes or any other program for ipod to play one song and then stop instead of contiuing playing. I need it to be in the same playlist and ready to play the next song when I press play?

Good luck.  I tried to do this to cue sound effects for a theater, and never found anything.  iTunes will definitely *not* do this, nor was I able to find any player that would play one song at a time in a single playlist.
In my case, I ended up using AutoHotkey to tie individual tracks to the keys on an external keypad. This was an excellent solution for my problem, but I don't think AHK runs on Macs.
One workaround is to make a folder, and fill it with *shortcuts* to the songs you want (ie, the actual files).  You can change the names to start with numbers to get them in the right order.  Then if you double-click on one it will play just that song.  You'll still have to double-click on each song.
Might be a good time to learn AppleScript   It would  also be pretty easy to write a Java app to do this.

  • AA3, changing tempo in Edit mode.

    Hello everyone.
I've been using AA3 for quite some time. I generally prefer to use FL Studio to work with recordings, but since Edison (FL Studio's equivalent to Audition's Edit Mode) if very poorly made, I prefer to use Audition to edit samples and recordings. When I record something like, an acoustic guitar, sometimes the recordings are a bit out of perfect timing, and I always like to have recordings perfect. So, what I would like to do is go into audition's edit mode and manually move around the notes myself. This seems to sometimes work well, if a note is a bit late, I delete the extra space. If it's a bit early, I copy a little bit of the dead space behind it, paste it, and am good to go. It's time consuming, but in the end, it syncs up perfectly with the VSTs I use, since computers are never really off timing. But, this doesn't seem to work when I want to change the tempo. For example, I recorded a song at 70 BPMs. So, I loaded the song into edit mode. Whoops! The tempo must be off. So, I go into multitrack mode, change it from what it's at to 70, go back and... there's no difference. From my understanding, BPM stands for beats per minute, and a beat isn't a constant in the equation, the minute is. Therefore, the distance between two beat should change when adjust the tempo. Only being able to work and edit in one tempo is very constricting, so I can't imagine that the people at adobe/cool edit pro would have done this on purpose. Is there a way around the tempo in edit mode being seemingly stuck at whatever figure it's at? Thanks for the help, I really need to get this recording done soon!

I'm somewhat confused now. You're telling me that the little ruler at the bottom of edit mode that says BMP ### (Where ### stands for the number set in multitrack view) that has all of the tickers is simply there for show? That would be like Photoshop having a ruler set to 72ppi, without the user being able to change it. If the document was in 300ppi, the ruler would not change, and the measurements would be off (of course, it would erroneously read 72ppi, as Audition erroneously reads the tempo set in multitrack view). Forunately, I found the answer that I had been seeking elsewhere. It appears that there is a small bug in Audition that when you change the tempo in Multitrack View, it changes the number displayed on the ruler in Edit View, but not the distance between the "ticks" giving it an inaccurate reading. To fix this, one must right-click the ruler, and adjust the tempo right there where it says "Edit Tempo...". I feel foolish that I didn't see this myself, but I've never needed to right-click the ruler until now. The reason I posted this was to help anyone else who couldn't find the answer, so they didn't have to deal with anyone on a high-horse who really didn't know the answer, or hardly read the question enough to understand it, but answered anyway with a quick and defeating answer that might quickly gain them points. I'm not naming names, but some people (not naming names) did come off a bit strong. But perhaps that's entirely deliberate...

  • Workaround for JSFL shape selection bug?

There seems to be a bug in the document selection reporting in JSFL in  CS4 (haven't tested earlier versions).  I submitted it as a bug to Adobe  but I'd really like to find a workaround for it.  I've included my bug  report below.  Has anyone else encountered this?  If so, have you  figured out a workaround?  It's pretty annoying, making the tool I'm  working on really difficult to manage.
    ******BUG******
After performing a publish preview, fl.getDocumentDOM().selection  reports an incorrect selection of raw shapes.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create a JSFL command with the following contents:
    doc = fl.getDocumentDOM();
    fl.trace("there are " + doc.selection.length + " items selected");
    2. Start the authoring environment fresh, with a new document.
    3. Draw several shapes on the stage, not touching each other, all in  the same frame and layer.
    4. Select one of those shapes but leave the others unselected.
    5. Run the previously created JSFL command.  It will send the following  text to the output panel, as one would expect:
    "there are 1 items selected"
    6. Do a publish preview (either Flash or HTML).
    7. When it comes up, close the preview window.
    8. Deselect all and then select one of the shapes (again, keeping the  others unselected).
    9. Run the JSFL command again.  This time, it will say that there are n  items selected (where n is the number of shapes you drew in step 3).   So if you drew three shapes, it will print out the following:
    there are 3 items selected
Note that this result will be the same even if you go to a different  document, do a publish preview on that document, then return to the  original.  It seems that simply doing a publish preview alters Flash's  state to report the selection incorrectly.
Results: The JSFL command reports that all the shapes are selected,  despite the fact that only one of them is.  The only way I've found to  get Flash back to its normal behavior is to restart the authoring  environment.
Expected results: In the steps above, the JSFL command should always  print out that there is one element selected.  There's no reason that  doing a publish preview should change that.

When selected all shapes in selection are treated as one. You can see it if you run this script with selected multiple shapes:
    fl.trace( fl.getDocumentDOM().selection[0].contours.length );
It will output you twise bigger number then selected shapes (because each Shape has two contours - one clockwise, other counterclockwise).
Of course this. implementation is strange for me too. Thats how i found your post

  • ITunes Match/iOS 7 iPhone music workaround for excessive data usage?

I just got an email from AT&T indicating I had exceeded 150GB of home data usage this month. It was because I used my home wifi to download 5000 songs to my iPhone from iTunes Match to fill it.
I'm frustrated, since it used to be so easy to make iTunes Match work for a large amount of music: In iOS 6 what I used to do (if I had to restore iPhone and set up as new phone): Plug iPhone 5 into computer, set up phone as new, check "manually manage music and videos" and "prefer 128kbps" and make sure iTunes Match was off in phone settings. Then drag & drop 5000 songs (about 40GB) from iTunes into phone. Once that was completed (a couple of hours), I could disconnect the iPhone from my Mac, turn iTunes Match to "on" in phone settings, and I'd get a message on the phone saying "All music on this device will be replaced" which is fine, but other than taking a while to update the remainder of my iCloud stored music, it used very little data.
Fast-forward to this past weekend. After updating to iOS 7.0.2 and having to do a restore and set up as new iPhone, this approach didn't work: When the step came "All music on this device will be replaced," all of the 5000 songs entirely re-downloaded all over again, which took 27 hours and burned through 40+ GB of home data (not phone data, since I was on Wifi). I kept my phone at home, plugged in and on wifi all weekend so as not to burn through all of my LTE data.
What is the deal? If I have to do this again (let's hope iOS 7.0.3 or 7.1 doesn't force my phone into recovery mode again), I certainly don't have the time or patience to let iTunes Match redownload all music again, and I certainly don't want to use up 40+ GB of home data.
Is there a workaround for this? Have others been successful transferring music via computer first and then turning on Match without problem in iOS 7.0.2? I'm sure it worked that way in iOS 6, and without completely redownloading all the music again, since that process would have taken several hours and a lot of home data, and I have not had any problems like this prior to iOS 7.

I think a better question is why do you "have to" restore your iPhone and set it up as a new device as often as you seem to? This seems to be more of a problem for you.
I followup question is why do you have iTunes Match turned on if you're syncing all your music to your iPhone?
Perhaps you should examine how you're using your iPhone and iTunes Match?

To answer this question, yes I have. It has always worked this way for me.

  • ITunes won't sync with my iPhone 4! Won't get past 'Waiting for changes to be applied'

I've recently started having a problem with syncing my iPhone 4 (running the latest version of iOS7) with the latest version of iTunes.
I start to sync my phone with iTunes but it gets to the 'Waiting for changes to be applied' phase and then doesn't finish it's sync correctly after that. It won't tell me that the sync has failed, it'll just replace the 'Waiting for changes to be applied' with the Apple logo in the top bar on iTunes.
And now, rather randomly, all songs ripped onto iTunes from discs with artists starting with the letters R-Z are dislayed in the library on my phone but the phone will fail to find them, and subsequently play them, if selected.
Does anyone have even the slightest idea what has gone wrong with iTunes or my iPhone 4?

Cancel the sync if you haven't done so already. Quit iTunes, reboot your computer, reboot the iPad and try again. This won't hurt either...close all apps on the iPad before you try syncing again.
In order to close all apps .... Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Quit iTunes and reboot the computer, now try again.

  • Workaround for not being able to reference a multi-select field in a calculated field?

Does anyone have a workaround for the fact that SP doesn't allow the use of a multi-select choice field to be used in a calculation in a calculated column?  I have a list that WAS a single choice in a Status field with three other calculated columns
that were dependent upon that field.  Then I had to change the Status field to be to multi-select (checkboxes). Now of course my calculated columns don't work.  In addition, the end user can't fill them in either.
I've got a Status field (multi-select), a Status Date field and Expiration Date field (calc).  The expiration date's calculation is shown below.   This worked great until I was asked
to change the Status field to multi-select.<o:p></o:p>
    =IF(Status="NoI
    Review",DATE(YEAR([Status Date]),MONTH([Status Date]),DAY([Status
    Date])+21),"")<o:p></o:p>
There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what you are trying to accomplish.

    Hi run4it,
Since SharePoint calculated column cannot reference the choice field with multiple-select value enabled, a workaround is to use workflow to copy the "Status" column value to another single line text column, then reference this single line text column in
    calculated column.
