Workaround for older iMacs?

Is there a way to install Mountain Lion on a late 2006 iMac?

Yes, I entered the code, I get a link to download on the Mac, but it won't let me download it because its a late 2006 iSight iMac.  There IS a way of installing ML on this iMac, but it requires you to purchase a legal .app in order to accomplish this.  So I purchased the legal .app and can't download it.  I've tried on my PC as well, but you don't get a link to it on the PC.

However, you can use a third-party app to mirror the Mac onto the Apple TV. You can use different applications like AirParrot or Beamer that work as AirPlay Mirroring with supported Macs

  • Time Capsule as Hard Drive for older iMac

After upgrading to Snow Leopard on my MacBook, my family now has four laptops that can take advantage of time machine for wireless backups, so I want to buy time capsule to do that easily. Will I also be able to use it as a hard drive for an older non-intel iMac that can't be upgraded from Tiger to Leopard? In other words, will I be able to simply drag files to time capsule via ethernet or USB (no airport card on the iMac either!)

    Through Ethernet. USB won't work.

  • Need iPhoto 8 or 9 for older iMac

Installed a copy of Snow Leopard on my mother-in-law's 2007 computer, but had to wipe the HD, which as corrupted to do so.  I already tried to use her older bundled software to custom install the iPhoto software, but no luck.  The install program gives a message saying that it cannot install this software and shuts down.  What are my solutions to getting iPhoto back on this computer?  Is there somewhere that I can get the older version of iPhoto?  App Store will not let me install iPhoto 11 on the computer.

Your mother in law's iMac came with iLife 08 installed, iPhoto 7.  You can use the demo version of  Pacifist to install from the those disks. The run the appropriate updaters to get to 7.1.5 from Apple's Download site.
Note:  iPhoto 7 will not run on Mavericks and can't order prints, books, etc. from Apple's print store. So if you think she might want to upgrade to Mavericks or order print products she'll need iLife 11 which will be about $40 at Amazon.com.

  • Airplay for Older iMacs

    I hace iMac 2009, running 10.8.4
I understand that with newer iMacs you can now mirror your desktop to Apple TV.  Is there a way, an add on, an app, something, that will enable older iMas like mine to enable it to be mirrored to my Apple TV (Black box)?
    Thanks,

  • Upgrading RAM for older iMac

Hello, sorry if this has been asked a million times over. I am going to upgrade my iMac to OS X Tiger from 10.2.8 and thought I would upgrade the memory at the same time. I have never bought memory for a computer before so I have a few questions.
    1. Where can I buy it, just anywhere online, it will just work (as long as it for the right computer)?
    2. Do I have to fit two memory pieces of the same value, I currently have 256MB, but was thinking of going to 1GB, so would this be two at 512MB?
    3. Finally how do I actually do it!
    Many thanks.

    Kappy,
I'm sorry to do it this way, but I wanted to contact you - as I remember you'd been very helpful with my prior questions - and I didn't see any other way to do so. I know it has nothing to do with this thread...I'm just hopeful that you're still monitoring the topic.
When you get a chance, would you be so kind as to read the below post for me? I'd be extremely grateful!

  • Workaround for older versions

I have 2 older versions of Photoshop that I wanted to install on my new computer.  4 and 7.  I cannot get either to install even using Windows 8 compatibility settings.  I read where there was a problem with 7 being unable to install when the hard drive exceeded 1 terabyte.  My hard drive does.  Is there a work around for this?  I cannot afford a new version.

    You need to understand something.
Apple didn't design iOS to be compatible with Flash. So... You can't have an iPad which "already had Flash installed" because Flash has NEVER worked with iOS since the first iPad was sold. And there will NEVER be an iOS device that will run Flash Player. That was an Apple decision, and your Apple retailer should have advised you of this before you bought an iPad.

  • Wirelss usb for older imac

can I get a usb wireless adaptor compatable to my linkryr wireless-g router?
    this is driv'in me crazy
    can anyone help?
    thanks

Slot-load iMacs can accept an "original" Airport card using a special adapter card. Although these parts are no longer in production, they are readily available on the used market. There was a huge spike in price when the cards were discontinued, but prices have moderated again.
You wireless router can be configured to service the slower speed devices in addition to the faster devices. On a home network, there is almost no penalty for configuring this way.
This is by far the most reliable solution, and is supported by Apple software. It works without trouble and you can get it fixed if it stops working.
Here is an auction for the Airport card with the adapter for iMacs like yours:

  • TV out for older iMac 800

    Hi all,
I've got a 17" iMac 800 that I'm looking to hookup to a TV. I've got an array of inputs to play with on the TV, so I'm looking at s-video right now.
I know there is an adapter that takes the mini-VGA port and outputs direct to s-video/composite, but I don't think that works with the 800mhz model (at least all the literature says 1ghz or higher). So do I need to get the regular VGA adapter and get a converter from there?
Ideally the Apple Video Adapter would be the best option, but I don't think that will work. Anyone do this with an iMac 800?

So do I need to get the regular VGA adapter and get a converter from there?
Yes you will need the Apple VGA Display Adapter (part M8639G/A) and a device called a "scan converter".
Ideally the Apple Video Adapter would be the best option, but I don't think that will work.
You are correct that will not work. See KB 88282, iMac (Flat Panel): About the VGA Port.

  • Does Apple have a trade-in program for 2009 iMac (to purchase a brand new iMac or Mac Pro?

I have an Apple iMac11,1 with 16Gb memory, 2 Tb drive, Superdrive, QuadCore 2.8 I7 processor, ATIU Radeon HD 4850 Graphics board with 512 VRam.   I'm considering a new computer (either a new i7 iMac or the MacPro desktop) and was wondering if there is a used market within this community or if Apple has a trade-in program for older iMac's.    Does anyone know?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no a trade-in program, but if you recycle it, you will get an Apple Gift Card with the value of the iMac that you can use to buy a new Mac at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store > http://www.apple.com/recycling

  • Have the following iMac at home and am contemplating adding a MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule for backup/storage and increased WiFi speeds.  My question is this (1) a compatible setup, and (2) will my older iMac slow down the WiFi speeds?   Man

Have an older iMac and am contemplating adding a new MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule to increase WiFi speeds. My question is (a) is this a compatable setup and (b) will the older iMac slow the WiFi speeds?

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

A reply to similar question (Q & As , in product page Apple Store) says:
"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 10.2 crashes when I try to convert old libraries for use in the new software. Is there a workaround for this? Or will i have to continue using the previous version to complete older projects?

Final Cut Pro X 10.2 crashes when I try to convert old libraries for use in the new software. Is there a workaround for this? Or will I have to continue using the previous version to complete older projects? the only foreseeable solution is to begin any new projects on 10.2 or importing footage on 10.2 and starting form scratch--which is something i definitely don't want to do or have time to do. ANY advice, thoughts, or opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
    Running 10.10.3 // MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) // 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 // 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Exactly the same problem with me.
Some other threads advice to remove fonts, clean the caches, remove add ins but nothing works consistenty, for some it looks like it works, for me it failed.
What I did not try yet, was to move the Render files out of the malicious library to trash.

  • Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac

    Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
      http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?

that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection.

  • Can I hook use an  older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?

Can I use an older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?  The Macbook Pro has the Mini display port and the iMac has the older (larger) display port.  I am trying to have a document open on the iMac while writing a paper on the Macbook Pro.
    Thank you for your time.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can use the Mid 2011 iMac as a display for your 2011 MacBook Pro. Both have Thunderbolt, so you won't have any problem > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Buy a Thunderbolt cable and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac to enable Target Display
