Worker role monitoring/diagnostics in Azure

Hi,
I have trouble monitoring and reading diagnostics for my 6 different worker roles.
- I "Enabled Diagnostics" and specified the right "storage account credentials"
- I use Owin for the hosting of my worker roles and specify:
config.EnableSystemDiagnosticsTracing();
- In the Azure Cloud Platform, under "Configure", and then "monitoring", i got this:
Level ->
This setting is not currently available.
Retention (Days)
->This setting is not currently available.
- In "monitor", when i try to add metrics i get an error:
"An error occur while retrieving cloud service metrics. Please try again in a few moments.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Ambroise

hi Ambroise,
Did you select metrics form VS?
I suggest you could select some metrics and re-deployment your project to "Production". At the same time, I suggest you could log out the portal and logging in again.
Please try it.
Any question, please let me know.
Regards,
Will

  • Worker role not accepting connections

    I have created a workerrole project in Visual Studio and deployed it to Azure. RDP is enabled.
    FIrst few times I could use RDP to connect. Now it will no longer let me connect, it hangs at initiating remote connection.
    Have restarted the worker role, complete removed the solution and reinstalled but no luck.
    Any ideas???

    Hi,
    Please try to increase/decrease the worker role instance number in azure manage portal cloud service SCALE tab , or reset the REMOTE (at the bottom of the azure portal cloud service CONFIGURE tab) information, give further information here
    if the issue is still exist.

  • How to pass input arguments to Worker Role Application using Powershell

    Hi All,
    I have a worker role running in Windows Azure Portal. I need to pass arguments to this Worker role service and get the output by using PowerShell.
    Can someone please specify how this can be achieved using PowerShell?
    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi,
     Please refer to the Following StackOverflow article that talks about how to configure PAAS instances for Powershell remoting.

  • Is this the best design for asynchronous notifications (such as email)? Current design uses Web Site, Azure Service Bus Queue, Table Storage and Cloud Service Worker Role.

    I am asking for feedback on this design. Here is an example user story:
    As a group admin on the website I want to be notified when a user in my group uploads a file to the group.
    Easiest solution would be that in the code handling the upload, we just directly create an email message in there and send it. However, this seems like it isn't really the appropriate level of separation of concerns, so instead we are thinking to have a separate
    worker process which does nothing but send notifications. So, the website in the upload code handles receiving the file, extracting some metadata from it (like filename) and writing this to the database. As soon as it is done handling the file upload it then
    does two things: Writes the details of the notification to be sent (such as subject, filename, etc...) to a dedicated "notification" table and also creates a message in a queue which the notification sending worker process monitors. The entire sequence
    is shown in the diagram below.
    My questions are: Do you see any drawbacks in this design? Is there a better design? The team wants to use Azure Worker Roles, Queues and Table storage. Is it the right call to use these components or is this design unnecessarily complex? Quality attribute
    requirements are that it is easy to code, easy to maintain, easy to debug at runtime, auditable (history is available of when notifications were sent, etc...), monitor-able. Any other quality attributes you think we should be designing for?
    More info:
    We are creating a cloud application (in Azure) in which there are at least 2 components. The first is the "source" component (for example a UI / website) in which some action happens or some condition is met that triggers a second component or "worker"
    to perform some job. These jobs have details or metadata associated with them which we plan to store in Azure Table Storage. Here is the pattern we are considering:
    Steps:
    Condition for job met.
    Source writes job details to table.
    Source puts job in queue.
    Asynchronously:
    Worker accepts job from queue.
    Worker Records DateTimeStarted in table.
    Queue marks job marked as "in progress".
    Worker performs job.
    Worker updates table with details (including DateTimeCompleted).
    Worker reports completion to queue.
    Job deleted from queue.
    Please comment and let me know if I have this right, or if there is some better pattern. For example sake, consider the work to be "sending a notification" such as an email whose template fields are filled from the "details" mentioned in
    the pattern.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
    This development mode can exclude some errors, such as the file upload complete at the same time... from my experience, this is a good choice to achieve the goal.

  • What are Azure limitations for Websockets in Cloud Services (web and worker role)?

    A WebSocket Server should be built on Azure platform with OnPrem connections and have questions regarding limitations for Websockets in Azure Cloud Services - web and worker roles.
    Websockets can be configured for Web Sites and limitations are understood, but Azure Websites is not an option.
    Nevertheless it is planned to run a web service (without UI - no web site) as a Cloud service which has secure websocket (WSS) connections to OnPrem machines. Websocket protocol is enabled for IIS8 on Cloud services web and worker roles. Azure Service Bus Relay
    is not an option.
    Questions:
    1) Are Websockets supported for Azure Cloud services web and worker roles? we assume yes
    2) What are potential limitations from Azure side to support concurrent Websocket connections? We are aware that CPU, memory etc are limitations, but are there additional limitations from MS Azure side?

    Hi,
    As I know, azure cloud service web and worker role support Websockets, users can connect to the role via the special endpoint, if we use Azure cloud service, I think we can monitor the metrics such as CPU, memory, etc... and scale our cloud service via these
    metrics to keep the websockets working, refer to
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/cloud-services-how-to-scale/ for more information about how to scale a cloud service.

    Hello,
    >>: The service configuration could not be retrieved from Windows Azure for hosted service with DNS prefix 'rmsazure' in subscription id **************
    Base on error message, I guess your azure service didn't get your certificate and other instances didn't have certificate to auto scale. Please check your upload the certificate on your portal management. Also, you could refer to same thread via link(
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12843401/azure-autoscaling-block-cannot-find-certificate ).
    Hope it helps.
    Any question or result, please let me know.

  • Can a Worker Role process call Antimalware for Azure Cloud Services programmatically?

    I'm trying to find a solution that I can use to perform virus scanning on files that have been uploaded to Azure blob storage.  I wanted to know if it is possible to copy the file to local storage on a Worker Role instance, call Antimalware for Azure
    Cloud Services to perform the scan on that specific file, and then depending on whether the file is clean, process the file accordingly.  If the Worker Role cannot call the scan programmatically, is there a definitive way to check if a file has been scanned
    and whether it is clean or not once it has been copied to local storage (I don't know if the service does a real-time scan when new files are added, or only runs on a schedule)?

    Hi,
    I would suggest you have a look at this article:
    http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2014/10/30/microsoft-antimalware-for-azure-cloud-services-and-virtual-machines/, please note the Microsoft Antimalware Client and Service is not installed by default in cloud service, please try to use the PowerShell
    cmdlet, Set-AzureServiceAntimalwareExtension to enable antimalware in your cloud service. Here's some more info:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn771718.aspx

  • Azure Worker Role reboots when adding instance of Web Role

    I have a Windows Azure cloud service with a Web Role and a Worker Role. I I have built a website that allows me to perform various management functions against the cloud service (stop/start, reboot instance, add instance, remove instance). All functions are
    performed via the web api. My issue is that when I add an instance of the web role, the worker role reboots. Note that this doesn't happen if I add an instance via the Azure portal. The code functions correctly in all other aspects. Any idea how to do this
    so that only the role being affected recycles instead of all roles recycling?
    My code:
     public void AddInstance()
            XDocument configDoc = this.GetDeploymentConfiguration();
            var ns = configDoc.Root.GetDefaultNamespace();
            configDoc.Root
                .Elements( ns + "Role" )
                .FirstOrDefault( r => r.Attribute( "name" ).Value.ToLower() == this.RoleName.ToLower() )
                .Element( ns + "Instances" )
                .Attribute( "count" )
                .Value = ( int.Parse( configDoc.Root
                               .Elements( ns + "Role" )
                               .FirstOrDefault( r => r.Attribute( "name" ).Value.ToLower() == this.RoleName.ToLower() )
                               .Element( ns + "Instances" )
                               .Attribute( "count" )
                               .Value ) + 1 ).ToString();
            string encodedString = Convert.ToBase64String( Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes( configDoc.ToString() ) );
            this.SetDeploymentConfig( encodedString );
        public XDocument GetDeploymentConfiguration()
            string uri = string.Format( this.servicePropertiesOperationFormat, this.subscriptionID, this.serviceName, "production", "" );
            ServiceManagementOperation operation = new ServiceManagementOperation( this.thumbprint, this.versionID );
            var xdoc= operation.Invoke( uri );
            var myelm = xdoc.Element( wa + "Deployment" ).Element( wa + "Configuration" );
            var mystring=  Encoding.UTF8.GetString( Convert.FromBase64String( myelm.Value ) );
            return XDocument.Parse( mystring );
        public string SetDeploymentConfig( string configurationFile )
            string uri = string.Format( this.servicePropertiesOperationFormat, this.subscriptionID, this.serviceName, "production", "/?comp=config" );
            ServiceManagementOperation operation = new ServiceManagementOperation( this.thumbprint, this.versionID );
            string payloadString = string.Format(
                @"<?xml version=""1.0"" encoding=""utf-8""?>
                <ChangeConfiguration xmlns=""http://schemas.microsoft.com/windowsazure"">
                        <Configuration>{0}</Configuration>
                </ChangeConfiguration>", configurationFile );
            XDocument payload = XDocument.Parse( payloadString );
            return operation.Invoke( uri, payload );

    Hi,
    From my experience, if you add one role instance, the whole cloud service will run in translating state, and this cloud service will stop to working, so maybe this is a future request.

    hi Vel,
    According to the error message, I suggest you could try to use the latest version of Azure SDK and Emulator. Also, you could refer to this document via (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/dn459835.aspx#BKMK_knownIssues ).
    You could get the latest version form this page (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/downloads/ ).
    please try it.

  • How to deploy worker role to Azure cloud via portal

    Hi
    I have two worker roles in my VS Project and I need them to be running on Azure cloud. I have created the storage accounts, the worker roles are using Queues, that I created using c# code.
    I looked up some articles and they say I have to create a hosted services from top left corner, but I don't see any hosted service link on my portal. (I am thinking the new version of Azure Portal does not have hosted service link, probably been replaced
    with something else but I don't know what it is)
    Can someone please help me what to do after I create a package and have the config and package files in app.publish folder. How to deploy the  worker roles in cloud using the Portal
    Thanks
    -Sarah

    Hi,
    >>I looked up some articles and they say I have to create a hosted services from top left corner
    As far as I know, cloud service was called hosted service in old azure platform, see below old platform screenshot.
    About deploy your application to cloud service, please refer to
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/cloud-services-how-to-create-deploy/ for more detail information.

  • How to develop and deploy multiple worker roles in single azure cloud services?

    I am Manikandan, From Myeasydocs.com.
    We have developed our application as web projects.  Now we are going to move to azure cloud services, i have successfully migrated our application in cloud services and it worked fine. I am having difficulties with back ground task. i have nearly 12
    schedule tasks in our applications. I need assist on creating multiple worker role creation and deployment.
    Is there is any site on explaining the worker role process in details?
    Thanks in advance .. !!

    Hi,
    In Worker role, Applications hosted within worker roles can run asynchronous, long-running or perpetual tasks independent of user interaction or input. It is a service component that is useful for generalized development, and may perform background processing
    for a web role. A worker role is frequently used for long-running tasks that are non-interactive, but you can host any type of workload.
    I suggest you to follow the below article which explains about Creating and Deploying of Web Roles and Worker Roles in Azure Cloud Service using Visual Studio.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/jj618299.aspx
    Hope this helps !

  • What actions will trigger azure worker role reboot

    Hi team,
    we have a application host in worker role, the worker process will create a new process if it receive a request,
    i we want to update the worker and keep new process still working smoothly, what we should do during the Udate.
    we did some test for this and found that when updating the worker role via portal, the worker role VM will not reboot,
    will all update not cause worker role reboot?
    another question, what actions will cause worker role reboot,so that we could avoid them when doing update.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi,
     Thanks for Posting. I see that no one in the forum community has answered the question.  hope the following resource points you in the right direction.
     There are certain implicit and explicit factors that may force the runtime to reboot or re-launch the role instances. Implicit factors are internal to Azure environment and explicit factors are those that are initiated through the change in configuration
    files or by performing an in-place upgrade.

    Hi Everyone,
    I have issue in logging the workerroles logs in Azure Wadlogs table for past 4 days to till. Actually before it was logging the trace logs for the worker role in same azure wadlogs table only. I have checked the space availability of the wadlogs table,
    it is showing enough space only. I don't y it is behaving like this for past 4 days to till. And I have the same environment setup for UAT also but it is working properly. Please suggest me to get out of from this issue.

    Hi,
      Make sure OverallQuotaInMB, should be at least 500MB less than the value specified in the sizeInMB attribute.
      Refer the Following article on troubleshooting common issues with WAD

      If the above link does not help, i would suggest you get a
    Support Ticket created since access to the instance and code may be required.

    Hi,
    I'm not familiar with Azure VMs, and therefore, unfamiliar with Worker Roles in Azure VMs, however, error: 0x80070005 is the standard Microsoft error for Access Denied.  Based on the log output you have, the access denied error is being returned when attempting to connect to a server.
