Hi all,
I have about 200 images that I need to crop 5inch x 7inch, then to change the aspect ratio to D1/DV PAL 1.07. But what order do I need to carry out the work? Aspect Ratio or cropping first? Or does it make no difference?

This format is used particularly in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and in some areas of Asia. PAL uses altogether 625 scan lines, thereof approx. 575 are visible. The color subcarrier has a frequency of approx. 4.43 MHz in the case of analog PAL (complementary view). Special NTSC or PAL color subcarrier signals will not be transferred via connections like SCART (RGB) and YUV. Such a signal is only transferred via connections like Composite Video, RCA, FBAS and Y/C or S-Video (S-VHS) respectively. The refresh rate is 25 Hz or 25 fps respectively. This corresponds to 50 Hz (interlaced) or 50 fields/s respectively. The digital standard resolution is 720x576 pixel for DVDs, 480x576 pixel for SVCDs and 352x288 pixel for VCDs.

New aspect ratio crop.

I have a PC using Windows 7. Today I have upgraded Lightroom 5 from Lightroom 4. When using the new Aspect Ratio crop the guides appear as expected. When I go to the top centre area of the crop, instead of getting the black lines with the arrows (as you do with the corners) all I get are two white arrows. This means I can only drag the entire crop box to a smaller size. The line will not move down to the aspect guide as you expect. Can someone inform me as to what the issue is?

If i understand your problem correctly, you have to unlock the padlock in the crop tool to get this behavior.

PSE7 Aspect Ratio Crop Tool keeps seizing up on me

I run Windows Vista 32bit and PSE7+ACR 5.6 and I'm perfectly happy with this set up. However, recently an annoying thing has been happening part way through editing a series of photographs, in that the aspect ratio crop tool seizes up completely, leaving me with the crop ratio that I last used before the lock up.
I have learned that the only way to resolve this is to save the picture I'm currently editing and close the Editor. Once the Editor is re-opened the crop tool works fine again ... for a while. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the programme but that doesn't work.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem, and if so how did you cure it? I'm fairly desperate now - I tried the Adobe UK tech support twice today but was left hanging twice for more than ten minutes, so I had to give up as I'm on a fixed income I can't afford to waste money!
Any ideas anyone?

I haven't been ignoring your reply Hatstead (thank you for troubling by the way) but I have already tried this on the numerous occasions that the crop tool has locked up on me. I've also tried 'Reset All Tools' but that has had no effect either.
I had hoped to see a torrent of replies from numerous knowledgeable PSE users and experts on this forum, since a similar post by me on other photography sites has not produced a definitive technical answer to this problem to date. I don't want to have to resort to purchasing PSE9 or 10 (plus the accompanying Scott Kelby book) since PSE7 gives me all I require at the skill level I find myself.
Once again ... has anyone else had a crop tool locking up problem, and how did you resolve it?

Aspect ratio cropping for a Folio

I understand that digital SLR cameras have an aspect ratio 2:3.
Do ALL Photobooks 8.5x11 require 4:3 ?

Missed that - do not have a DSLR so have no idea of the ratio they shoot - but the answer is still the same
The frames for all iPhoto photo books are 4:3 - you can right click on a photo (control click) and choose fit to frame or you can click on it and a slider appears above the photo frame that lets you adjust the size of the photo and a hand appears that you can select and move the photo within the frame
You can use a non 4:3 photo but have to either fit to frame of enlarge (exxentially cropping) to fill

How to crop without changing aspect ratio/Crop mode

Is there a way to crop in Lightroom without changing the aspect ratio? That is my first question.
My second question, is it better to use APS-C crop mode on my full frame Sony A7R if I know at the focal length I'm gonna crop, or just take it full frame and crop in the software? Are there disadvantages to this when it comes to uses flash's etch?
Third, Currently I do not have a portrait lens as the Sony A7R is new and does not have many lenses out yet. Until the 90mm lens comes out I was thinking I could use the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 in Crop mode for a portrait lens. That would make it around 88mm would it compress the background nicely the way an 85mm lens normally does for portraits?

This is what I usually do, now I know for sure my aspect ratio has been locked. As far as shooting in crop mode though, what I meant about that is this; For portraits, if you take a 55mm and shoot a portrait with it, the background doesn't look that compressed, which I like. Even if it's at a good F stop. It'll be out of focus, but not "compressed" And seems to show more flaws in the person. This is why with my Canon I always used my 85mm or my 100mm. I know some who will only use a 200mm due to this type of compression that happens at longer focal lengths.
If I was to shoot in crop mode, making it 88mm, would it give me that affect? The compressed look I get from a 85mm? Or would it simply just crop it like I do in post and not really make a difference.
Sony has yet to come out with a portrait lens and I need one bad, I've been offered little jobs here and there and can't take them because I don't want to disappoint them. I'm waiting for their 90mm, because that is close the 100mm and 85mm I shot with on the 5D for portraits.
Not to same the subject here but, 'Benjamin Root Photography,' has been a great help to me on this forum. I also torn between getting the 16-35mm F/4, or the new 24mm F1.4 prime, for wide landscape shots, because landscape and hiking is where I do most of my photography.
I don't plan on actually shooting a landscape at 1.4, but if it's 1.4 that means if I stop it down to F 8 on a landscape it'll be tact sharp. But it is not a Zeiss and is only going to cost 500. On the other hand, there is the 16-35mm, still I'd shoot around F 8 or even higher for landscape, the problem is, if it's F/4 won't that mean it'll have to stop down much further than the 24mm to get a sharper picture?
I don't guess I can go telephoto, like anything over 100mm because I have the A7R. People say over 100 mm it has shutter vibration, so at 200 or 300 I wouldn't buy until the A7R ii comes out. I'm not willing to get the regular A7 ii because I really like the advantage of having all those megapixels for cropping purposes, and it just plain looks better. Which is why I took my Sony A7 back for the A7R. Everyone was saying the photo's were more impressive than the 5D Mark iii's with the Zeiss 55 1.8 vs 5D with 50 1.4L. That wasn't really the case with the A7, but when I got the A7R I seen a HUGE difference in dynamic range.
I've heard the A7 is better at focusing than the A7R, but since I switched to the A7R I have noticed literally no difference. But I don't shoot fast moving subjects.
With both cameras I notice the face detection and EYE AF is hard to get to work properly. If I let it auto focus fully It'll focus on the wrong thing a lot of times even though the green boxes say the right thing.
So, I have been putting it on a single point, keeping it at the center, focusing on the eye, and then recomposing. That's mostly how I did with the 5D anyway. I never allowed it to choose focus points for me either.

Can I import with aspect ratio crop in Aperture?

When importing images can I auto crop them to a specific aspect ratio?

I find myself answering my own questions, well there is no way to save an aspect ratio as a preset, bummer. But I did find this article:

As a former Vegas Pro user, I'm having a challenge in using this new software to achieve certain results. I need to adjust my original aspect ratio 16:9 (1920x1080) to 4:3 (1440x1080). How is this done in Premiere Pro?

Why?
Because I shot the original video in 1920x1080 but composed the shots in 4:3. Therefore, I want to maintain the "HD" video in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Then I can output to any format--at the highest quality.
Thanks for your help, Harm. I didn't think cropping would be a "Video Effect." The hardest part of all this is changing one's thinking from one app to another.
EDIT: Crop applies it to just the clip. How do I apply it to the entire project?

Workflow/aspect ratio issues

I'm going wrong somewhere, but I'm not sure where. I wanted to play around with the Color fx bin presets and see how they turn out on screen - somewhere along the way the aspect ratio has gone from 16:9 to 4:3 anamorphic and squished the picture. Can someone suggest where I went wrong and need to tweak my settings??
Here was my work flow:
1. Export a couple of clips from iMove which have been captured of an AVCHD camcorder
2. Export the XML to FCP
3. Send to Color
4. Applied colour FX to sequence
5. Render
6. Send back to FCP
7. Export to "Apple TV" using QT compressor setting in FCP (saved to desktop)
8. Dragged off desktop into iTunes... (uh oh! thumbnail looks like it's 4:3)
9. Sync Apple TV and play move... yep - it's anamorphic
I'm new to FCS so still finding my way about - but not played with any of the settings as yet.

Try importing the AVCHD files through the log and transfer window to FCP. Skip iMovie... In the log and transfer window there is a little button with a gear on it. Open that to set the preferences of AVCHD to be ProRes. Perform the import..
Then put the now ProRes clips in a sequence, and send to Color. Make sure in Color that the export settings are the same as what you imported to FCP. They are found in the setup room in the project settings tab... should use ProRes for this. Then follow the same steps you used before. It should come out 16:9.

Overcoming aspect ratio cropping

I am making a slideshow in iMovieHD and taking the photos from iPhoto. Not surprisingly, I am losing the left and right edges of my photos due to mismatch between aspect ratio of the camera and the iMovie aspect ratio.
I get that.
Is there a way to compensate within iPhoto? Effectively I need to add black or white space on the top and bottom. I could do this in an external editor but that's a lot of work.

Well, I ended up moving the picture to an external editor and pasted it into an all black image adding black space to top and bottom. Easy solution, but it took me 2 or 3 minutes. I only had about 3 pictures to do this to, so not a big deal.
Having said that, it is astonishing to me that this is not an option in iPhoto. This is a basic option found in online photo printing so you don't have to cut of the edges.
I still think I must be missing something. Perhaps I am not being clear - how do you guarantee the edges of the picture will not be cut off?

Can I recover aspect ratio distortion (widescreen picture narrowed)?

I've been given a home-made DVD, shot at 16:9 but processed to 4:3. Unknown Windows program - sorry! Everyone is very tall & thin - even car wheels. I want to use iMovie to fix aspect ratio, crop some rubbish & add titles & soundtrack.
Is there any way to stretch the picture to the correct aspect ratio? Wide or standard, I'm not bothered. I extracted the DVD using Open Shiiva, saved as mpeg4, imported into iMovie, but can't find any way to stretch the picture.
I'm OK with iMovie HD, learning '08, used QT Pro a bit. What's the best way forward with this?

I think that's the first time I've been called amazing... apart from by my girlfriend... occasionally... very occasionally...

Cropping aspect ratio changes randomly

Each time I crop a new image, the aspect ratio seems to change randomly. Sometimes it will pop up as "Do Not Constrain." Sometimes it will appear as 4x5. Or 2x3. Etc. You get the idea. I have no idea why it's changing. It's very disruptive to the workflow. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?
I encounter the issue on both my MacBook Pro and my iMac.

If you go to about 4:34 in the clip you'll see it change over to a different aspect ratio.
This sequence was exported directly from PPro CS4 to FLV. The FLV file was uploaded to Youtube.
I'm editing this morning and just came across this same issue again.
I'm amazed that none of my clients have mentioned it yet. Of course, I'm not making Hollywood movies - these are just short videos people send out to college coaches.

What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem. There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out. Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5

Aspect Ratio issues getting 16:9 to look right, what is the best workflow?

I am having trouble getting my 16:9 footage to look right when I export, especially when playing on DVD. I shot the footage with a Sony HDR-HC1 which apparently shoots in 16:9 anamorphic. Originally when I imported the footage it appeared it the FCP viewer and canvas in 4:3 letterboxed form, the image did not look squeezed or stretched but appeared with black stripes on top and bottom.
I have tried several experiments with exporting this footage to dvd with the following results:
Using Compressor with 4:3 setting in export:
DVD Studio Pro track settings to 16:9 looks extra squashed vertically
DVDSP track settings to 4:3 image looks in proper aspect ratio but displays with black stripes on all 4 sides.
Using Compressor with 16:9 settings in export gives the same results.
In conclusion, if it appears in 4:3 letterbox in FCP viewer and canvas there is no way to get it to export and display in DVD with proper 16:9 aspect ratio.
I have also done some experimenting with re-capturing some of the footage from the tape.
For one sequence I recaptured the footage and it displayed in 4:3 without the letterboxed effect (filling the whole screen) but appeared squeezed, I am guessing that this is because of the anamorphic nature in which my camera captures the footage. No pixels were missing. In the FCP viewer and canvas it looked squeezed and did not display in the correct aspect ratio, however when it was exported via Compressor in 4:3 and then in DVDSP Track Settings put to 16:9 Letterboxed, it is displayed perfectly (letterboxed vertically, the image filling the width of the screen without the extra stripes on the sides).
So I thought that I had my solution here, although that did involve re-digitizing and batch capturing all 18 tapes used in the project, so its not exactly a quick fix.
This is where it gets a bit confusing. In order to understand where I had originally gone wrong in my workflow I did some more experiments, this time with the settings on the camera (which I use for a deck in batch capturing). I found the function on the camera where you can set the "TV Type" to either 16:9 or 4:3. I switched the TV Type to 4:3 and when batching it went back to the original letterboxed look (in the batch preview screen that you see while capturing), however when put into the viewer and canvas it was too letterboxed and looked squashed vertically. So then I switched back to TV Type 16:9, now it looks 4:3 squeezed in the batch preview screen (no letterboxing, no missing pixels), however when it goes into the viewer and canvas it becomes letterboxed like the original footage that I had described earlier.
So now even though I have switched the camera back to its original settings it will not display in that 4:3 squeezed look in FCP viewer and canvas.
So after all that my main questions are, in 16:9 can I view it in the FCP viewer and canvas in its correct (anamorphically converted) aspect ratio and still export it without the black bars on all sides?
(The FCP canvas seems to only display in 4:3)
If not, what setting do I need to capture in FCP in the 4:3 squeezed look I have described earlier?
(This is the only setting that I have found that displays properly when anamorphically stretched via DVDSP)
I know that this is a long essay so thanks for making it this far. I have spent weeks experimenting trying to find the best solution so please help me if you know how! I will be very appreciative.

I am not sure if it is necessarily a bug, but its a matter of understanding all of the settings needed. I had the same problems for a while but after a fair bit of trial and error have found some workable settings.
It probably has more to do with the export settings rather than what viewer options have selected (I don't think that viewer settings affect your export).
What program are you using to export?
I am using compressor to export with aspect ration set to automatic 16:9. Then use DVDSP with the track set to 16:9 letterbox, it seems to export to DVD with the correct aspect ratio that way.
I am having trouble with the image strobing, looks like some kind of interlacing problem, but at least I have got it in the right aspect ratio.
Its typical video, solve one problem and it just creates another.
I am yet to find the absolute best workflow.
In response to Andy above, the original letterboxed footage probably did have something to do with the downconverting settings on the camera, as when I import without downconverting it does not letterbox. In the HDR-HC1 there is an option in the menu called "TV Type" with options of 4:3 or 16:9. I was reviewing my footage on a 4:3 television so I most likely had it set to 4:3 which created the letterboxing in the viewer when I then imported the footage.
Importing the footage in HDV solves the issue of aspect ratio, but creates a new problem with the image strobing.

Can the screen be cropped to and exported at a custom aspect ratio?

I think I'm needing Premier to do something it's just not designed to do. What I need to do is to take five or six different screen and audio captures of the same event (a 3D virtual reality instructional session), each representing a different person's view of that event, assemble those in a split screen, synchronize them to the designated "main" capture's audio, delete the other audio tracks, and add CG title labeling each one. The effect is like looking at a display showing six security camera images. From what I can determine, it is possible to do those things in Premier.
However, what I then need to do is to crop out any extra space to the left and right of that split-screen image and export the file as a .mov with the aspect ratio produced by the cropping so that the videos are as large as possible and are not distorted from resizing them to fit the standard aspect ratio. Depending on the size of the screencaps, the resulting .mov might have nearly a 1:1 ratio. What is critical for this is that the video be as large as possible and the "black" space be as small as possible so that the person who comes in later to analyze these composite videos can see everything as clearly as possible. I also need to crop on the fly; because these images aren't always captured at the same size, it is impossible to preset a size for the resulting video.
We've been using a screen capture tool to do this that works but is a pain; clips can only be moved and resized by mouse-drags, and the software has to import to and export from its own proprietary format, which is very slow. However, ever piece of "real" video editing software I've looked at only seems to export in TV or film aspect ratios. Quicktime Pro looked for a bit like the best bet, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle multiple audio tracks (which are necessary since I have to synchronize tracks by ear much of the time).
Is what I'm describing--exporting .mov files while preserving custom aspect ratios that are created by cropping during editing--something Premier can do? If so, would it be something fairly easy for complete novices to do?

Thanks, but we cannot change the screen recording process. According to the study's protocols, the virtual world has to be full-screen or almost nearly so during the session, and that full screen has to be captured for analysis. Resizing the screen captures is not a problem (especially since I already said I'm doing that), but if you're saying that Premier can only play back up to six screen captures simultaneously if they're captured at 1/4 screen, then that's a deal-breaker right there.
By the way, here's approximately what each of the completed composite videos looks like:

Each screencaptures is resized to the largest consistent size that will fit into this format, and then the resulting video is cropped to the outside border. If there are only five screencaptures, I simply center the single one on the bottom on the "center line."
And, to be clear (though I've said this several times already), this is something that is already being done. We probably have more than 60 of these .mov files, each around 45 minutes long, with five or six synchronized screen captures in each. Frame rate etc. has not been any issue with these, and neither has playback of the .mov file from HD or DVD.

I have looked at all of my settings both in Bridge and CS6 Photoshop regarding Camera Raw. I am at a loss how to set the crop tool in cm or inches as I once did - now the only option is to crop using ratios of 1:1 etc etc - This is infuriating as lots of my square crops I could set at 10" x 10'' specifically to print one to one to fit frame and mount size -
Now if cropping using bloody aspect ratio of 1:1 (square) the actual dims of the crop are roughly 4.25 inches x 4.25 inches. this means I then have to open the whole image in photoshop in order to crop at the dims I have set! It was so much quicker in terms of batch cropping in camera raw being able to set dims in centimetres and inches but they have gone and mucked around with it, with the new bloody update! Unless you are an absolute genius and know how I can go back to having an option of CM, Inches and aspect ratio within the custom crop settings? (Please say you do)
