Workflow for avchd clips and meta data

Just started using a Panasonic AG-AF100 on a 5 month project.  Will be producing 1000's of clips.  So I have off-loaded the first 3 cards we shot and have discovered something about avccam material.  If you just copy the .MTS files from their /stream folder or rename the file with a name instead of its original number produced in the camera you lose the timecode and other meta data.
If I leave the clips in that folder and other card folders in their associated directories and "import" clip with Premiere Media Browser it retains the timecode.  Trouble is that I cannot see thumbnails in Media Browser and the clip number means little.  Bridge on my Win7/64bit machine shows thumbnails (but no preview) and a double-click will preview in Win Media Player.
On my main edit station (Vista/64bit) Bridge neither shows thumbnails or previews and I get no avchd .mts playback in Windows Media Player.  Everything worrks the same within Premiere, nice solid editing and playback of avchd clips. (I will probably upgrade this machine to Win7 next week)
So my request for advice/questions are:
Suggestions for managing and organizing large qualities of clips with what will be similar names, etc
Previewing updates or options to find media
How do you manage AVCHD material and still maintain meta data?
Thanks so much!!  As I get older and the technology seems faster, stronger, sharper, the demands on my brain get tougher.
Rick

Rick,
If you just copy the .MTS files from their /stream folder or rename the file with a name instead of its original number produced in the camera you lose the timecode and other meta data.

You mustmustmust keep the files in their folder structure, if you intend to maintain timecode. You've clearly discovered this Good you did so early. The folder structure thing is really not a big deal; there is very little need to manipulate these at the OS level, and the Media Browser in PPro makes it reasonably easy to bring these in for editing. You can pre-build a folder structure into which you can offload each card's worth of clips.
Windows 7 has built-in splitters and decoders for H.264 media, so that's the reason you can at least get thumbnails in Bridge and playback the files in WMP there. The Media Browser, even on Windows 7, won't show thumbnails as they are not saved into the folder structure the way that P2 saves a poster image into the folder structure. Note that even "standard" containers like AVI or MOV do not display a thumbnail in Media Browser.
As far as Bridge is concerned: I know a lot of people like it, but from my perspective, it's just about worthless for video. This is largely an application designed for photography workflows that has been shoehorned into "working" with video. I don't even like it for AVI/MOV.
The ugly truth is that Bridge is not going to be much, if any, help in this workflow. However, there may be another tool in the suite that will accomplish what you need: OnLocation. You won't get thumbnails, but you can browse through the folder structure without knowing you're doing it, import clips to preview them, and add metadata. You could do this for each card you offload. Then, in Premiere, simply use Media Browser to navigate to your OnLocation Project, and it will open up just like a folder, listing all your clips with the metadata you added. Granted, it is not a perfect workflow, but once you added that metadata, it will flow with the files wherever you move them around in the Adobe suite--it won't go elsewhere, as it's not injected into the files themselves. So long as you're editing in Premiere, you're good.
Now, there is another thing you can do that may make clip management even easier, though it does require a bit of forethought in pre-production. It will really depend on the type of project you're shooting, but you can preload metadata on to an SD card and into the camera, and then automatically record this to the clips as they are shot! I don't have an AVCCAM to give you exact workflow steps, but I do this all the time with my P2 workflow and it's a tremendous help once you hit the edit bay.
If you haven't already, head over to the Panasonic support site: Support Desk Top / Broadcast and Professional AV. You'll need to register for a "PASS" membership (it's free, and you don't need to register a camera), but you can then download the AVCCAM Viewer application. Unfortunately, this application is not quite as helpful as P2 Viewer is (it's rather cartoony, actually), but it does have the metadata editor in it that will let you create your metadata files in advance and save them to an SD card. Then, after consulting the camera manual , you can set those metadata files to be a data source for the footage as you record it. Here's what you can add to the metadata files and, summarily, the clips:
Once you load this into the camera's memory, that data is saved into the clips, and is readable by Premiere. The "User Clip Name" field can be set to auto-increment (again, this is going off my knowledge of the way metadata works in a P2 camera, but the AVCCAM should be similar) so that each clip has a base name and then a serial number. When you're done with a particular scene/shot, you'd load the next metadata files, reset the indexing, and continue. Lather, rinse, repeat.
The biggest hole in the metadata workflow, at least as it pertains to AVCHD/AVCCAM, is that there is no tool (that I'm aware of) that lets you edit this metadata after the fact. With P2, you can--there are a number of applications, both free and payware, that let you do this--but I've yet to find one that works with AVCCAM. Even Panasonic's own AVCCAM Viewer is incapable of this, it seems.
The major advantage to adding file metadata like this is that it travels wherever the clips go, and into whatever application they land in. Not being able to edit it after the fact, though, just plain sucks. This is where the clip metadata you'd add in the Adobe applications comes into play, with the obvious disadvantage that it's only useful in Adobeland. As always, ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
So that's my take on this--it's good you're looking into this before you have a couple terabytes worth of footage on hand Let me know if I can help fill in any details that I might have overlooked. And be sure to check on the Panasonic site linked above for firmware updates to the AF100--I see one came out just a few days ago. It's always good to stay current.
Good luck!

  • Workflow for marking clips and then exporting them out as individual clips with audio?

    Hello,
I'm just starting to use Prelude.  I recorded an interview for my daughter for a school project last week.  The interview went well, but I want to mark as "sub-clips" all of the video interview's question/answer combos (e.g. "What is your name?  My name is John Doe.") and then save them out to individual clips rather than have to manage the full size files (about 40GB in all from my Panasonic GH3, 50mbps, IPB MOV) with clip markers.  I'll keep the originals as backups, but would really rather work with the individual clip files.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!  I would think this would be a very simple and common function.  Basically, just dividing up the original video into multiple, standalone video clips with the same bit-rate, encoding, etc., but with new headers/EOF markers.  Just chopping the original files up into chunks with no changes or reencoding necessary.  If I can do it the way I imagine it, it should be a very quick process, at least compared to transcoding the files.
    Best regards,
    Scott

    Hi -
Meg The Dog's suggestion will work if you don't intend to bring in all of your media off the card.  The Partial Ingest method will allow you to selectively create subclips during ingest and not transfer the full original clips.
However, you do state you plan to keep all your media - not just the parts you want to subclip. So here's my suggestion for the workflow:
    1. Ingest all your media from your cameras (the entire clips - not the partial clip method)
    2. Open each clip from the Prelude Project Panel and create your Subclip Markers using Prelude logging tools.
    3. In the Project Panel you will find new entries will appear for each SUBCLIP Marker you add to your master clips.
    4. You can organize you subclips into BINS as needed to keep track of the segments of your video
    5. When you're ready to create your timeline of subclips you can either
5a. EXPORT all the SUBCLIPS into their own files (select all subclips you want to export and use the FILE->EXPORT->MEDIA menu command)
       or
5b. Drag-Drop your subclips into a ROUGHCUT in Prelude to order your story. Then use the SEND TO PREMIERE PRO feature to send the Rough Cut into Premiere pro where you can finish your edit. All the media will come along for the ride into Premiere Pro (including your Subclips). You can then add titles and any effects easily enough in Premiere Pro).
There are some other options here you can also try out which might be interesting. For example, you can add transitions and any additional audio tracks to your ROUGH CUT directly in Prelude and then EXPORT the Rough Cut as a final movie - and not need to move to Premiere Pro unless you have wider editing needs.
    Hope this helps!

  • EBS data and meta data retrieval

    Hi,
I am into java and my requirement is to retrieve data and meta data of the underlying EBS implementation and make it available to the EBS end users for some kind of processing which is outside EBS.With my limited knowledge of EBS,what I understand is that there is a logical view and a physical view of the data.My queries are as below:-
    1. Is there a way to get the relationship between physical and logical view?
    2. How to get the meta data of the underlying table structures?
    3. Should JDBC drivers be sufficient to retrieve the data or is there any other more efficient means of retrieval.
Any help on the same is appreciated as I am new into this area and any help is welcome.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1. Is there a way to get the relationship between physical and logical view?
    2. How to get the meta data of the underlying table structures?See Oracle eTRM website.

    3. Should JDBC drivers be sufficient to retrieve the data or is there any other more efficient means of retrieval. I believe using JDBC drivers should be sufficient. For using JDeveloper, please see (Note: 330236.1 - Configuring JDeveloper For Use With Oracle Applications 11i and R12).

    Hi,
An option would be use Oracle Alert. Create an event based alert on the table where you have order approvals or rejections. This alert will be raised after inserting or updating this table. Create an action linked to this alert, and choose message as action type.
This setup can be done under Alert Manager Responsibility.

I have an old project with AVCHD clips and I want to import the clips again with surround sound. How can I relink the project clips to the re-imported ones without doing the project from the begining?
I have a sony handicam and I imported the clips to iMovie and they lost quality and converted the audio to stereo. I want to import the project to final cut X and import the AVCHD in 1080p and surround sound and export the movie in bluray. Can I relink the clips without editing everything again?
    thanks!

Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings

    Hi,
dates will be stores in the table 'SCAPPTSEG'.
I double checked it. This table stores all the date types of one order transactions...
    The relationship is as follows..
    CRMD_ORDERADM_H- guid = crmd_link-guid_hi
    crmd_link-guid_set = SCAPPTSEG-APPL_GUID.
    Thanks and regards,

        Hi,
you should try with FM: CRM_DATES_READ_SINGLE_OB or CRM_DATES_READ_DB.
There is something in table SCAPPT and SCGENAPPT.

        Hi,
I can tell you where the pricing records are saved, replicated from ECC.
The data from ECC table Axxx (e.g. A304) is replicated to CRM table
    CNCCRMPRSAPxxx (e.g. CNCCRMPRSAP304).
Here you can find fields TIMESTAMP_TO and TIMESTAMP_FROM.
About the dates: what Sreekantha Gorla stated, about table 'SCAPPTSEG' is correct.
What might help is to execute program "CRM_ORDER_READ". Here you can find
    the relevant entries also.
    regards,
    Wim

  • Workflow for using proxies and AVCHD

I'm working on a 6 camera mulitcam project of a theatrical performance and I'm using Premiere CC.  The footage is all spanned AVCHD from Canon Vixia's.  My machine is pretty good but no way is it going to play 6 streams of AVCHD at once (I've done 4 and that was pushing it!).
I've done a little searching on the forum and found this post:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4877276#4877276
    In particular, Fuzzy says:
    The workaround is the following:
    - create a folder for your proxies next to the folder containing original footages and name it e.g. AVCHD.Proxies;
    - transcode your MTS files into MPEG2 ones with the same file names and MTS file extention (or run Batch Rename in Bridge after transcoding with MPG file extention);
    - close your PrPro project, created out of original MTS files;
    - temporarily rename AVCHD folder containing original MTS files to e.g. AVCHD.Sources and AVCHD.Proxies to AVCHD;
    - open up PrPro project and enjoy: all your original AVCHD files are now linked to MPEG2 proxies.
When you're done, reverse rename folders.
This idea appeals to me but I've got a question.  My files are all spanned AVCHD.  It seems, in his example, that each .mts has a corresponding mpeg2.  With my spanned clips, how will Premiere know how to put them together properly?  I don't really mind if there is a one frame drop between the mpeg2 clips but will this majorly screw things up when I swap the proxy footage out?
Is there a better way to do things now, one year on?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hmmmm... still having problems.
I got back to work this morning (having spent most of the weekend and yesterday raking leaves) to find that all of the mts have successfully been transcoded into mpg clips.  I added a new STREAM folder, moved the clips and changed the file extension to .mts.  So far so good.
I decided not to stitch the spanned mts clips first because I'm on a Mac and I haven't found a good (free) stitcher.  I have a nice Windows one that I like but i didn't have the time to move the clips to a Windows machine, stitch them and then move them back again.  This may still need to be done because I'm faced with a new problem.
When I go into Premiere and try to import the mpg clips (now hiding under the .mts extension) I get the error "The file has an unsupported compression type".  This happens if I use the regular import OR the Media Browser.
Any ideas?  I compressed these in AME using the default "Match Source - Medium Bitrate".  I used the H.264 format, not the MPEG2 format thinking that Macs like H.264 but I wonder if this is the problem
Thanks for everything, by the way.  You've been more than helpful

  • Mobile workflow for AVCHD

I am using MacBook Pro and capture all my video with Panasonic HDC-SD9EP-S. I use large external Firewire disks to archive (already) and cut (soon hopefully) my video. However, I spend a lot of time away from home, so I am wondering if FinalCut (Pro or Express) will allow me to apply the following workflow:
    1. Copy AVCHD media from my SD card to an external hard disk archive
    2. Backup the AVCHD archive to another external drive
    3. Convert each clip to a small (480x270) preview and store it on an internal hard disk
    4. Away from home (no access to the external had disks) - review new clips using the small previews, name them, rate them and assing keyowords and other meta data to them, mark those I want to delete permanently
    5. Back at home - delete the clips I marked for deletion permamently from the archive
    6. Again away from home - precut a video using the small previews
    7. Back at home - convert only the clips used in the video to AIC or ProRes, store the converted media on external hard disk, and finish cutting with all details
    8. Export result video to the desired destination formats
Can anyone suggest whether FinalCut Express or FinalCut Pro will let me apply this workflow? If not, what would be the minimum necessary modification of the workflow to make it possible?
Also, do you see any problems with my workflow which I seem to be overlooking?
    Thanks!
    HOnza

    Roger,
What is the workflow like for the newer AVCHD format hard drive and memory stick camcorders? Do you use the USB port to just pull files directly off the camcorders memory, then import these into premiere elements?
    >> After connecting the camcorder to your system, you can either
    1. Copy the files locally and then import them into Premiere Elements.
    Or
    2. Directly use Media Downloader and import files. A copy of file will be saved in the default location.
Does the camera make a separate file for each "scene" each time you turn on/off the record button that is?
    >Scene Detect is available however this feature does not exist for AVCHD camcorders. For DV camcorders, one can certainly use this feature.

  • ProRes Codecs for AVCHD- Overkill and Under-kill?

My Canon HFS100's AVCHD Bitrate is 24Mbps. Any reason to go higher quality than Pro Res Proxy? If Pro Res Proxy uses a higher bitrate (36) than the native bitrate of the Canon HFS100 (24), is there any practical benefit of using LT or even regular Pro Res as opposed to just using Proxy as your master file or are you simply creating larger quicktime files? Is there such thing as "headroom" in video editing?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Shane Ross wrote:
Depends on your workflow. If you have the space, go with ProRes 422. If you don't care TOO much about high high quality, use LT.
This will be instructional video, starting on the web, and then ultimately going to DVD and/or Blu-Ray, I guess I should go with the standard ProRes to max out the quality. Picking up a new 500 GB or 1 TB drive when needed for additional backup won't kill me.

Offline/online workflow is up to you. Test it before you do it. there are gotchas.
Alright, I'll have to see if it's worth the time and hard drive space for AVCHD to mess with ingesting with Proxy and reconnecting later with the standard ProRes. Maybe not. It is after all instructional video and not a major motion picture I'm doing here. But, I'd also rather not be disappointed in 5-10 years that I rushed or got lazy or cheaped out and then need to go back and re-do. Hard drives are not expensive.
    Thanks again,
    Dave
P.S. Thanks for the clip. Man, that Canon lens is sharp.

  • Used Relocate Masters to new g-drive. Lost Aperature Library and meta data

    how i crashed aperature
    1.56 aperature
    all updates current
    tiger 10.4.11
    all updates current
Goal was to move Aperature Library from MBP to g-drive.
    what i did:
    1. "Relocate Master" to g-drive. Success. Aperature still viewed all Files with all Meta Data normally.
    2. Collapsed "Library" in Projects Panel. Did not delete Projects. Did not delete any Photos.
    3. Preferences > Image Management > set new Aperature Library on g-drive.
    4. Uploaded new photos from a Canon and viewed them successfully.
    5. Ejected g-drive correctly.
what Aperature is not doing now:
    1. no Projects show up.
    2. no Referenced Photos show up.
    3. no Vaults show up. Note: the Vault was originally on MBP, but I foolishly did not set one up on g-drive before moving. I also have a back up Vault on a different g-drive that is, unfortunately, not up to date with all current photos before move.
    4. Aperature Library on g-drive is there but can not open any files in it. [note: item 3 above]
    5. Image files listed in g-drive but won't open in Aperature but do open in Preview or Gimp, etc.
    6. Aperature does not show any Vaults nor does it access Referenced Files.
    *Can you help ?*
*I guess these would be the questions:*
    1. How can I get the pics from the g-drive back into an Aperature Library with all the previous Meta Data attached to each Version?
    2. How do I get the Aperature Library - I put on the g-drive - to open in Aperature?
    3. If #1 is impossible - I guess I set up a Vault on the g-drive and move what I have from the back up Vault mentioned above.
    *Thanks for any advice !!!*

If I an not mistaken, I may have read through your pdf's quite a while ago. I am still trying to digest them and then apply them to my needs. If I had known that small projects may be faster and easier to manage than larger ones I would have done my imports quite differently. I chose to use Aperture in the first place to organize and add information to photos. I archive old photos. In particularly from 350th Fighter Group, WWII in the Mediterranean. So one "Project" of mine is =/-5000 images in the form of TIFF scans. I imported all of these into 1 project. Then I started applying metadata and keywwords like crazy. This allowed me to start to sort the photos into categories and find multiple version of the same image. I started making stacks of all the multiples. Then with smart albums and smart web sites I was able to create what might now be smaller projects. Since I gather information from others by sharing these photos on a website, You are able to see the smart websites here.

One cool thing is that various images reside in multiple smart webs based on common keyword. But now that I have all this organization, it seems it is time to put all my originals in a similar order via Aperture.
By the way, my files are reference files unless I make the mistake of importing them without leaving them in there original location.
I am thinking of starting over with blue folders. But I can't seem to get my head around it.

  • Catalog settings and meta data is there a better way.

    HI
I have adobe cs4 and light room 2.2 I do my editing in LR cropping exposure web galleries and so on on, thats all well and good but any modifications i make will not show up in the bridge unless i go into light room and apply save meta data to files. I have about 400 light room catalogs as I store the catalog in the folder that contains the original image. Is there a way to have light room automatically apply meta data changes to each catalog in stead of going to catalog settings or saving the meta data to the file. its a pain in the *** to have to go into a catalog and apply all those settings if i want to do some editing in the bridge

    > ...is there a better way ...
Might I humbly suggest that your multiple (400!!) catalog strategy is flawed? You have defeated the benefits of having a single database. (And those that argue a database is bad concept and a possible single point of failure are ... well ... simply wrong.)
Lr can automatically write XMP data so that Bridge can read it. But the reverse is not true. Any changes that Bridge/ACR make will have to be imported into Lr with manually initiation.
The point and beauty of Lr is that you make the majority of adjustments in Lr. It's possible to make adjustments in Bridge and have them imported into Lr but as you discovered it is not automatic. And your workflow choice makes it doubly (or 400 times) more troublesome.

  • Unable to Export Color Corrected Video's to Original format for AVCHD (GH2) and ProRES Codecs.

I imported a 176 MBPS AVCHD clip from my GH2 into Lightroom 4, then i added color presets to the video and color corrected the video, however during export when i select the video format as original the color correction does not apply to the video, only the original video is saved, But when i select H.264 or DPX the video is saved with the effects applied. I also tried using a AVCHD clip converted to Apple ProRES but when i export the video the effects are not applied to the saved video. Also the option i get for saving H.264 files is only 22 MBPS.

Original, whether for photos or video, means "unedited".  Bear in mind that this isn't intended for high-end video editing - just simple edits for digitial photographers.  It won't replace your video editing software anytime soon, if ever.

  • Best workflow for AVCHD 1080i50 footage in iMovie 10.0.7?

I shoot video using both my iPhone 5 and my Canon Legria HF R16. The first shoots progressive video, but with the second I shoot AVCHD (mts files) interlaced 1080i50 (that is 50 fields/second, giving 25 interlaced frames / sec). I recently purchased iMovie 10.0.7 from Mac App Store and I like it a lot. I don't have any problems with iPhone's (progressive) footage, but Canon's (interlaced) footage appear very noisy. Do we know how this version of iMovie handles interlace video? Any proposed workflow for interlaced video for good quality of export?

To increase the possibility of getting an answer, I would like to set a simpler general question: when using interlaced video with iMovie, do you:
    a) import it as it is (interlaced)?
    or
    b) deinterlace it and then import the resulting progressive video?

  • CC&B and Meter Data Management Integration Usage Requests

    Hello.
We investigating the following issue: Trying to create a Bill in CC&B with getting usage data from Meter Data Management using Usage Requests engine. Help pages of CC&B describe the big picture of Usage Requests and configuration overview. So this information is not enough for correct and complete adjustments. There is no any information about outbound and inbound XML messages formats.
CC&B help contains link to the document: Oracle Utilities Customer Care and Billing - Meter Data Management Integration Implementation Guide, but our attempts of searching of this document was ineffectual.
It's interesting to get any information about Usage Requests from CC&B to Meter Data Management or link to the document mentioned above.
    Thanks in advance!
P.S. Our current setup of Usage Request gives the next log during bill segment generation (we are using jms queues and xsl transformation of outbound and inbound messages. So MDM sends a response, but something wrong in further processing on CC&B side). As a result we get a bill segment in Error state with remark "Usage Request for Bill Segment is not found.".
