Workflow for dv 480p to HD up-conversion & weird ways to do it?  Thoughts?

Hi,
I'm preparing to output my dv feature film 92 minutes long (720x480p, 4:3, letterboxed, not anamorphic), and want to put it into various formats. I don't think I can afford a teranex upconversion but was wondering:
1. If I output using a kona and capture can I a.) do the settings so I can open the film in widescreen? b.) In that case is it unnecessary to do a render and then letterbox that render...can I simply output it and have the kona software letterbox? c.) Would it be best in a professional setting to output to hdsr and then output from that to hdcam and digibeta copies and d.) downconvert back to dvd from there (with the advantage of the widescreen if I so desired instead of doing the dvd from my original work)?
2. I am cheap and always find weird solutions...HAS ANYONE HEARD of ANYONE doing something so nutty as taking their 480p dvd (or possibly a direct output of the project through hdmi) and putting it through a high end television up-resolution dvd player such as the oppo 970hd and capturing the video output back into fcp as 720p or 1080p? Quite frankly, why wouldn't this be possible? Why would it look any better or worse than upresolutioning a 480p through anything short of a teranex from what I'm reading out there?
3. I've been told if I get a kona or do anything involving output and then recapturing a QT I might want for use for blu-ray (where I have to output from one mac, and go into another that also has fcp) I'd need another mac to do the capture...If I wanted my own system, I was told an intel mac mini would have enough power to recapture...no reason for it NOT TO...HAS anyone recaptured an HD QT on a mac mini that they put fcp on?????
I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for asking these questions, hate letters, "you're a bimbo", whatnot...BUT REALLY HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY done 2 or 3? And comments on 1 appreciated
THANKS

Slow down buddy...you're firing off way too many questions. And please use punctuation and capital letters...reading your posts is challenging. If you go to NYU, please write as if you are delivering a term paper. I hope this isn't how you deliver term papers.
but here it's scarier as I'm talking going 4:1:1 to 4:2:2...
Yeah, well...I capture HDV as ProRes all the time. That is 4:2:0 to 4:2:2. It doesn't add anything, it doesn't make things look worse. Just carries it over. You have less falloff when color correcting 4:2:2 converted from 4:1:1 then if you color corrected 4:1:1 directly, but that's about it.
When I talked to a technician there who is the only one of two in my wanderings in the last few weeks who isn't an idiot I said has ANYONE come in who is an fcp person asking IS THIS POSSIBLE...he said no I said why do you think that is...he said...because people aren't aware the technology is this good...no one has bothered yet I live in NYU film school land?
It isn't possible as this is NOT how it was designed. Really, no professional I know of would try that...waste of money trying to figure it out. If you want you can try. See if they will loan you a floor model to do this. Just isn't worth my while to test. Not when there is gear that is designed for this and will to a PROFESSIONAL level conversion, not consumer.
in this lhi is it equivalent to the kona 3 in performance and does it use the same software when going from sd to hd?
Yes, and yes. But it is HARDWARE upconversion...similar software interface. This is the card I asked AJA to make for years. They finally heard me.
And when you say the mxo2 is now able to as well do you mean there's software that will do as good a job upresing as the aja?
HARDWARE. The MXO2 upconverts via hardware. Different software interface...easier in fact. And yes, it does a BANG UP job. I have done this both with a Kona 3 and MXO2. I like the results from both.
is the studio compressor going to give you acceptable competitive up-res compared to the hardware options?
It is decent. You can tell the difference, but it does a good job. I would opt for the capture cards first, but lacking that ability (I have footage often that has no tape masters anymore...lord knows why) I use Compressor and it looks pretty good. Gotta make sure all the Frame Controls are set to best.
but I find it hard to believe you can do them and not have to tweak the contrast/color a bit after
Well, it will still look like scaled SD. No way to make it look like HD original. It is softer, and there are more artifacts, but that is because you blew up something to 10 times it's size...there will be issues. Even via hardware, but they can mask the noise better.
As well, is there any preference in broadcast deliverable these days for 720p/1080p or 1080i?
Mainly 1080i 29.97 and 1080psf 23.98. A few places take 720p59.94. But it varies from network to network. There is no standard...which stinks.
if my project was shot in progressive is it best to just leave it there and would you opt to just go to 720p from a 480p project for a general master and just ignore the 1080p format altogether at this point?
If you have no deliverable requirements then stick to SD. No reason to upconvert. However, if I was required to deliver an HD master, and was provided no requirements, I would go from 480p to 720p or 1080p...not go interlaced. But, that is all up to the client. What they want, I give them.
Of course I totally blanked on blu-ray which does have to have the 1080p codec first before going to the h.264 or am I wrong? I read in any case you can blu-ray burn mpeg2?
I have zero experience with BluRay. But blowing up SD to make a BluRay disk makes no sense. Why deliver a high def DVD of SD material? I think an standard SD DVD would look better...especially given the upconvert capabilities of modern DVD players. My HD DVD upscales VERY well.

  • Best workflow for DSLRs and Speedgrade / Premiere?

Can anyone suggest a workflow for DSLR footage using Premiere and Speedgrade? I would like to be able to roundtrip and do a light grade on clips and sequences before completed the offline edit. Is this possible? I know in the video tuts it seems to work for Red footage, but I couldn't get it to work for me with my 5d mark iii footage. It's all new to me having recently switched to Adobe from FCP and also to DSLR from camcorders. Thanks

Speedgrade isn't designed to go pre-edit, so right now there's no dynamic link with the other CS6 apps. It's intended to sit post-edit in a classical film studio workflow, with Sg ingesting only the final edited frames and exporting your production masters.
If you "send" a Premiere Pro sequence to Sg you will render out a single DPX image sequence (including effects and transitions, and without any references to edit markers or original filenames) and so importing that back into Pr would flatten your entire timeline to a single clip. Any changes to the Pr timeline and you'd have to do it all over again.
You can export an EDL from Pr and use that in Sg to read the native footage (provided it's compatible*), but  grading is not stored into the original files so it won't re-appear in your Pr timeline unless you manually re-import.
If you want to use Sg pre-edit, the options are:
Grade all your footage before ever touching Pr, export everything to lossless video or image sequences and work with those, forgetting about the original files completely (you'll need a bunch of disk space and hopefully a MOS shooting pattern, as your audio will be split out).
Grade a sample of every clip you're using, then save a Look for each one. Export the Looks as 3D LUT files (.cube) and use a plugin to apply them to your clips. Right now there's no official plugin for Premiere (Magic Bullet LUT Buddy isn't certified past CS5) but After Effects can apply both the .cube and the .look files via the "Apply Color LUT" effect. Note that some changes in Sg are not included in the Look, such as the choice of color space and tone curve, so what you see in Sg may not be what you get back in Pr.
I'm not downplaying the abilities of Sg, but it's a colorist's tool and doesn't sit very well in the CS6 unified concept of "one person can make a movie". It helps to think of it in terms of the union system in Hollywood - an editor never grades and a colorist never edits, so their tools look completely different, work completely different, and the electronic conversation only goes in one direction.
*Sg was designed with digital cinema in mind so it doesn't work with interlaced footage, plus it generally assumes you're feeding it log so be careful when picking defaults. It's one occasion where something like the Cinestyle fake-log profile for Canon DSLRs comes in handy.

  • Best workflow for doing a QC check?

    Hi all,
A client wants me to do a technical QC check on video files I receive before editing them. The items they want checked are as follows:
o   File format (GOP structure, bitrate, wrapper, codec, chroma subsampling)
    o   Macro blocking
o   Artefacts induced during transfer from VT, frame rate conversion, size or bitrate conversion
    o   Field dominance issues
    o   Chroma/luminance levels
    o   Aspect ratio discrepancies
    o   Flashing/strobing
    o   Frame slicing
o   Audio levels to EBUR128 recommendation.
    o   Wide dynamic range
o   Audio distortion, clipping, phasing and dc offset etc
Most of these are fine, as they can be spotted during manual playback. But what would be the best workflow for monitoring the Chroma/luminance levels? I figured I could turn on the YC waveform and play the clip back through a monitor - but the main issue is keeping an eye on both the picture & the waveform at the same time.
Can the scopes be set to give me a indication/alarm when a specified peak occurs? The same way audio does when it clips, where you get a red dot on top of the level meter?
And is there anything else Im overlooking?
    Thanks in advance - cheers!

    Thanks shooternz,
The client has specifically requested each file be QC checked. They will be delivering files to us for editing, which will be broadcast after we return the files.
So we need to manually watch each video we receive to check for any audio peaking or pixelation/slicing/artefacts, etc, that may have occured during the enciode - but I'm just wondering if the YC waveform can be set to raise an alarm or "peak" if the video file goes outside of legal limits at any stage. We will be viewing the video file - so it'll be awkward to also have to try to watch the YC waveform too, so hoping that part can be automated via a 'peak alarm' or similar!

  • Recommend workflow for progressive HD footage

I have to edit down some footage shot on XDCAM EX 1080p30. The end result will be PAL SD on DVCAM. I have the workflow for getting to PAL SD using Compressor, but I am wondering where the best place to go from progressive to interlaced is. My instinct tells me to leave it to the very last stage when I output the video to tape via a DV timeline. I am converting the XDCAM to ProRes in the first instance and staying in ProRes to PAL SD.

that's what I'd do. Compressor works just fine for the conversions to PAL

  • Workflow for converting SonyHD Cam footage via KonaLHe to DVCPro HD?

    Hi,
I've got a project starting tomorrow and the producer had to switch cameras the day before the shoot! They are now brining in Sony HDCam 1080psf 23.98 (don't know the camera). I've rented an HD Cam deck with SDI out (no FW). I have the Kona LHe so SDI input will be fine. The project is destined for digibeta 29.97 SD so I'm trying to figure out a good workflow for capture and editing. To keep file bandwidth down, I think DVCPro HD is a good solution, but I'm not sure where or how the conversion takes place using the Kona LHe and FCP. Do I set the Kona frame buffer to DVCPro HD 720p @ 23.98 and set capture settings the same in Final Cut? Or, as I have the internal RAID space, just capture native 1080, edit native, then convert the program to 29.97 window 16x9 at the end of the edit? Clarifications, recommendations and comments welcomed! Tnanks!

Conversion is done in FCP. But all you have to do is connect it to the Kona via HD SDI and set the capture settings in FCP. The signal coming in from the card is the full signal, you are just telling FCP in which format to save that signal as. And DVCPRO HD 1080p24 would be the setting. I doubt your internal RAID could handle uncompressed 1080p HD.

  • Workflow for GoPro photo timelapse in Final Cut Pro?

Shot a timelapse using photographs and the self timer with the GoPro HD.  But am having troubles with the proper sizing for final cut pro.
I used Quicktime 7 to make all the images into a .mov.  But when I bring that file into final cut, it's nowhere close to as sharp as it should be.  The photos come out of the GoPro at 2592 × 1944 @ 72dpi.   When I kick it out in Quicktime 7 it comes out as, 1224 × 917.  Then when I bring it into a 1280 × 720 timeline, it looks like junk.
Any suggestions on the proper workflow and settings to do this the best possible way?

    Hi,
Personally I do stills time-lapse conversions in motion.
Set up a project same as your sequence (1280x720 in your case)
Import the stills as an image sequence, resize (and do moves if you wish) on the oversized image sequence.
Then export it as a QuickTime movie in the same codec as your fcp sequence.
    Works a treat for me.
    Cheers

  • Workflow for Sales Order Release via Status Profile

    Dear all,
i want to make a workflow for sales order which have 4 User Status in One status profile.
Once Event triggered for sales order
    1.   Mail should go to main authority with sales order number.
    2.  Once authority will do some changes in the required field then he/she changes
the user status-1 from defauts as per line Item and mail should go to department no-1 (Head authority).
    3.  Once again same changes in sales order but now user status-2 from user status-1
as per line Item and mail should go to department no-2 (Head authority).
    4.  Once again same changes in sales order but now user status-3 from user status-2
as per line Item and mail should go to department no-3 (Head authority).
    5.  Once again same changes in sales order but now user status-4 from user status-3
as per line Item and mail should go to department no-4 (Head authority) .
and parrally for each changes of Status mail should also go to User (Event Creator).
    6. Finally mail sholud go to User as you are permitted to do next business transaction for this sales order
Please tel me the process as i am very new this topic and i am always going to stuck in Binding.
    please help me out.
    Thank You

    Hi Neeraj,
First of all start with SWELS and SWEL T-Code to check if any standard event is getting triggered or not. If event is getting triggered, then use the same event to trigger the workflow; otherwise create a custom event of BO and use the same to trigger the workflow.
Hope you are aware of T-Code SWO1 and delegation of BO. The BO used for your requirement will be BUS2000115.
As you want the workflow to get triggered only for one status profile and one of its status, so use check function module. There set the condition for you status profile and status.
The FM which you will be using the most is CRM_ORDER_READ. To read the status, you can also use CRM_STATUS_READ_OW.
Now simply make the approval steps in the workflow using activity. In the activity, you can use the standard method USERSTATUSPOPUP to send the workitem for approval. In each step use the same activity with different agents as approvers.
Just go with these things and let me know if you get stuck up somewhere.
    Regards,
    Guddan

  • Specs and workflow for creating opening/closing titles for video

I'm trying to create specs/workflow for videos that I will be adding opening and closing titles to (black background with colored text), using QuickTime Player 7 (Pro).
The videos are .mov, AVC coding, 1280x720, millions, 30fps, a sample video had a data rate of 7,463 kbits/second.
I created 1280x720 300dpi (perhaps I should have used 72dpi?), saved as a .jpg (highest quality), then copied the .jpg contents into a QuickTime Player 7 (Pro) blank document multiple times until I had enough frames for my need. The resultant video was very large; 339,743 kbps/second. I then exported to H.264, which brings the data rate down to only 214 kbits/second (and looks fine) and then copied that into the head of my AVC coding video.
    Questions:
    1) When I exported to H.264, the x pixels increased by 6, to 1286. After pasting that video into the AVC coding (1280x720) video, the resultant movie is 1280x720. Did my graphic get compressed by 6 pixels horizontally?
    2) Does my method of converting the huge graphic movie to H.264, and then pasting it into the AVC coding make sense? The combined video has AVC coding, according to Movie Inspector; does the H.264 of the graphic get converted automatically? Any better way to approach creating my titles?
Note: these AVC coding videos may get converted to H.264 for some use, but for now, I'm keeping the highest quality (source) video I have to work with.
    Thanks,
    Bob

"First, tell use why you're not using FCP's titling and keying capabilities."
    I don't own FCP.
"Then, explain why you're doing it this way."
I'm able to create graphics with plenty of control in a graphics program (PhotoShop in this case).
"There is no dpi in video, there are only pixels."
Sorry, I posted my thread then realized I left out a bit of info, but couldn't edit the post. I should have written that I created my graphics file in PhotoShop, hence the dpi reference.
"A black background for text is not the same as using an alpha channel."
OK. The portion of my video with titling stands by itself; that is, I'm not overlaying titles on existing video. Is there a use for alpha channel if I'm working up standalone title video frames? Uses less data rate?
It seems from your inference I would be best served by purchasing FCP, so I'll probably take that advice and buy it.
From a general video production point of view, I'd still like to learn more about creating titles in a graphics app and bringing them into QT Player; what format to bring them in as (e.g., H.264 into an AVC coding video, as I've done, or ?), and what happens when my graphics video gets converted from 1280x720 to 1286x780 (AVC export to H.264), and then brought into an AVC codec movie, and the movie remains at 1280x720-- does the graphic get horizontally widened, or the vertical compressed? Thanks.

  • Std workflow for Parked Invoices?

    hi guys
are there any std workflows for parked invoices? Our requirement is that once the Finance clerk creates a customer or vendor invoice he should only be able to park it and not post the invoice. Once the invoice is parked then the system should trigger a workflow and a notification neeeds to be sent to the approver to approve the invoice. Once it is done the finance clerk will post the invoice.
I switched on the event trace and did a trace on while creating a parked invoice. No event is triggered when the document is parked. If i post the document the event POSTED of object FIPP is triggerd. So since we dont have any std events raised when a document is parked is it possible to have a workflow?

    Hi,
The event FIPP.CREATED is raise via the customizing (SPRO)
Financial Accounting -> Financial Accounting global setting -> document -> document parking -> create workflow variant for parking documents.
Assign co.code to a workflow variant for parking documents.
    Have a look at ws10000051.

    Hi,
An option would be use Oracle Alert. Create an event based alert on the table where you have order approvals or rejections. This alert will be raised after inserting or updating this table. Create an action linked to this alert, and choose message as action type.
This setup can be done under Alert Manager Responsibility.

  • How to schedule a workflow for recurring executions: The solution

Scheduling a workflow for recurring execution has been long awaited in WFA, perhaps from 2.0 time. The following document shows how to get it done. I've also explained the logic behind it. It’s very simple to use, meets every requirement which one can have from a scheduler and of course highly flexible. Let's go!! The Real stuff. What is this? Is this actually a scheduler? No. This is actually a command in your workflow, but a special 'magical' command. This 'magical' command logic is built using the answers for the following questions: Can a workflow be scheduled for a delayed execution in a future time? Yes, but only one execution instance. If you want the next execution, execute the workflow again providing the same set of inputs and the execution date/time.During workflow execution, can a command inside a workflow get to know what is the  name of the workflow? YesDuring workflow execution, can the command know what is the job execution id? YesIs there any programmatic interface available to know what are the user input provided or a particular job execution? YesCan a command inside a workflow trigger another workflow? Yes.Can a command inside the same workflow trigger itself? Absolutely yes. I've ticked all boxes needed to build such a solution. The solution is to make the workflow a smart workflow, so smart that it can schedule itself for the next execution. It no longer needs any other task scheduler to tigger it. WFA provides a large set of REST APIs for other 3rd part SW integration. But I  also can make  good use of these APIs to make smart workflows. I have always believed that WFA should not only be seen as a framework for automating Storage boxes or server, but just about any task( inside a computer of course) which is done manually. WFA is an awesome product indeed.  So this is a command called "Workflow Scheduler" which  you can put in your workflow as another command. Prerequisites: You need PowerShell 3.0 on your WFA server. I certainly could have done it for PoSH2.0 as well, but life for web interfaces  using PowerShell is so much easier with Posh3.0. Posh3.0 is a big jump from 2.0. WFA is fully supported to work on Posh3.0. Its available by default in Win2012, Win2008 can be upgraded, Win2003 users can't use it. Add credentials of a WFA Admin/Architect in you WFA itself with Name/IP: localhost Match: ExactType: OtherName/IP: localhostUsername: <WFA Admin/Architect Username>Password: <User Password>   3.  Minimum WFA version 2.2. This is only needed for Importing the dar. I've provided the command code in text too. The command code is the real deal. How to use it? If you have a workflow which you want for recurring executions, just add this command "Workflow Scheduler" in it. The command takes parameters for the workflow execution intervals. For example minsInterval for executing this workflow every x minutes, or daysInterval for executing the workflow etc.Now just like a normal workflow execution execute this workflow deciding what is the trigger time. Example: Suppose you want the execution every day at 10:00 PM.So provide daysInterval = 1 And execute the workflow for a delayed execution at 10:00 PM. You can pick the day to start as you wish. The workflow will execute at 10:00 PM and when this execution reaches our magical command "workflow scheduler", this command will trigger the same workflow  with same set of inputs for the next execution at 10:00 PM tomorrow. And so on an so forth. I’ve attached a very simple example workflow here to help you understand. An Example of a workflow scheduled for recurring execution Daily at 11:30 PM starting 10-March-2015     How to stop/suspend this recurring execution? Easy. You just abort the next scheduled job execution in Execution=> Execution Status. The cycle will stop. How to resume it? Easy again. Just resume the same aborted job. The cycle restarts. Can I change the schedule execution time? Yes. After aborting the current execution, you can resume the same workflow at a new time. Execution interval can't be modified as you can't change the command parameters. But the recurring execution now can occur at a new time. Where or which position to place this “workflow scheduler” command in your workflow? At the beginning ? At the end? Or somewhere in the middle. This completely depends on your choice. See some below cases. You don't want the next job execution scheduling to happen if any of the commands in my current workflow execution fails: Put command “workflow scheduler” in the end. It will trigger the schedule of the next job execution only when all real original commands of your workflow have passed. else not.     You want continuous job executions irrespective of the workflow command failures: Put it in the beginning. It will trigger the schedule for next execution before any of the actual command begin executing.     You want an approval before the next execution job is scheduled: Add an approval point before the comamnd.           So it’s all left to you.      Can an operator decide the execution schedule? Yes, but which workflows will be available to him/her for this recurring execution will have to be decided by the designer. This is a good thing to have as it serves for access control in a way. The Architect/Admin can now restrict which workflow can be put for recurring executions. Operators can’t execute just any workflow available to him for automatic recurring execution. And the workflow designer can also choose which scheduling parameter is to be made a variable for the operator. For example the designer want the operator to schedule a given workflow only for weeks Interval and not months or days i.e. he/she can only chose to schedule for weekly, biweekly etc. executions and  nothing else. For this the designer can define a User-Input variable only for weeksInterval parameter. It’s Done. You want workflow execution to be scheduled either for daily or once in 2 days but not any other. You can restrict this. Or he/she wants to give full freedom to the operator make his/her own decision about scheduling, he defined user-input variable for all scheduling parameters. The workflow designer wants weekly schedule but the day should not be a weekday: You can even do this. Is this flexible enough for my requirements? I’ve attached the very command code. You can modify the command as per your requirements. Suppose you want daily execution of a certain workflow at 10:00 PM but skip a day of execution if the day is a Monday. Modify the code check for the day and add another day if it’s a Monday. Its posh code and highly readable. So you can see how this can be used in a  variety of ways. This is the beauty of a programmatic solution. Its highly flexible, it allows users to design solution based on their requirements. Flexibility is the heart & soul of WFA. Thats why I like it. I have a workflow but I don't want to modify it by adding a new command in it. Can I still use this solution? Yes but with WFA 3.0 on wards. WFA3.0 allows to create modular workflows. Create a parent workflow with you actual workflow as a child workflow in it. Add our “workflow scheduler” command too. So now you don't need to touch your existing workflow. I've attached a workflow example here.   Have fun!! sinhaa

Providing a new version 1.1.0 of the command "WFA Schedular" Changes made: Added conditional String Representation based on the Scheduling parameter provided. Provided check for the right number of parameters passed into the command.Added a new parameter "Expiry Date" to automatically stop the recurring execution upon expiry.Check for Posh3.0 version in code.Have Fun!! sinhaa Below example for:Schedule a workflow for recurring execution every alternate day i.e. once in 2 days at 10:30 PM starting 06-Jul-2015 (Today's date is 02-Jul-2015) . The recurring workflow execution  should expire on 31-Dec-2015 and stop.

    Thx!

    Hi,
Why do you want to trigger a wflow and what do you want to do with this trigger. Can you give more details of your exact requirements.
But, if you are looking for how to trigger, you can write a small ABAP pgm and schedule it as a job every night. THis job basically reads the table P1000-ENDDA for expiry date and if it reached today, then you can either trigger the wflow with SAP_WAPI_START_WORKFLOW or use SAP_WAPI_CREATE_EVENT to raise your custom event(for Business Obj. BUS7018, i think this is your BO and there are no std events right now, so you will ahve to add your custom event by extending BUS7018 to ZBUS7018).
Hope I am clear and this helps and if you need more details, reply.
