Workflow for exporting wmv for digital signage?

I am working with 1080i60 HD footage (HDV preset and sequence settings) in Final Cut Pro 6. I need to export sequences to be displayed on a Windows 7 machine running a digital signage system. The digital signage software prefers .wmv format.
I have purchased Flip4Mac WMV Studio Pro HD so I can export my HD footage and have a .wmv format video of comparable quality to feed through the digital signage software. I am baffled by all the settings and combinations -- CBR versus VBR; one pass versus two pass; various sizes and data rates. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, does it make a difference if I export via Quicktime Conversion, or use Compressor?
Thanks.

Don't think it matters in terms of quality whether you export using quicktime conversion from within fcp or you use compressor, but compressor will allow you to customize and save your settings as a preset and/or a droplet which may make things easier.  Theoretically you will get a more efficient encode using multiple pass variable bit rate encode as the output will be adjusted according to the complexity of the images.  However, theory and practice are 2 different things and the only way to really see what your effect this parameters will have on your output is to do some tests.    More than likely your displays will be progressive, so fooling with deinterlacing either in fcp or in compressor may be a good idea.    Also, bitrate is going to effect how smoothly your wmv's play on the display system.  Be sure and test this on your display system with what ever programs, etc will be running at the same time and hopefully on hardware that will match what will be in position for end use.  You will probably make your clients a little crazy with questions and testing unless of course they've had some unfortunate experiences in the past, in which case they'll be appreciative right from the start.

  • Best practices for exporting for digital signage?

I am exporting video clips to be displayed in a PC-based digital signage system. My video was shot in 1080i60, and I imported and edited the footage using HDV sequence settings. My final export size needs to be 1920 x 1080.
I have tried a couple of export strategies (export using Quicktime conversion) and just haven't been happy with how the video clips look on the PC system -- way too much interlacing. When I realized that the HDV codec is not cross platform, I started taking the additional step of opening and re-saving the .mov file in Quicktime. Now I'm fiddling around with Compressor, just to add more complications. I have tried so many different settings and codecs that I have completely lost my way! Can anyone recommend a workflow for this situation?
I am using FCP6 and Compressor 3 on an iMac OS 10.5.8.
    Thanks for any help.

I still see interlacing on the H.264 export that I don't see when I export the sequence as HDV. Of course, I can't get the HDV export to play on a PC.
I'm trying to read between all of the lines here...I'm going to assume there is a fundamental lack of understanding about what interlacing is and how you're going to remove it. The display either handles interlaced or progressive video files; one or the other. Let's assume it's progressive only. Since you shot interlaced, you must decide how you're going to remove the interlacing; you either throw away one filed or your combine them. If you combine them, you will see combed edges on anything that moves horizontally because every other line of pixels was captured 1/60th of a second later in time. If you throw away one field, you might as well have shot 720.
Where do you want o make this compromise?

  • Keynote for Digital Signage?

Hmm...? I thought that the new Keynote provided some means of pulling in RSS feeds. Was that a dream? Or perhaps wishful thinking with respect to the Web View feature?
Our goal is to use Keynote to provide Digital Signage support for an education technology conference we host at Arizona State University in the Spring (http://mec.asu.edu). We'd like to provide updates and information and such to attendees. Keynote would be nice, and the ability to pull in dynamic RSS info would be fantastic.
Any ideas on how this might be accomplished?
    Thanks.

I have a plasma screen in our school lobby connected to a MacMini. I wanted to use Keynote to display weather station data kiosk style. One of the Keynote slides would include a web view of the weather station webpage (not exactly RSS, but a related problem that has been discussed widely online). Unfortunately, web views do not update once presentation mode is started. Here's the work around:
    1. Use Automator to create an app that (1) stops current presentation & (2) immediately starts it again
    2. Using CronniX, create a crontab entry that launches the App created above at a given interval
    3. Play the presentation, and walk away.
My attempts at scripting a "stop/start" were unstable, but this has been running smoothly in our lobby for a week. The only drawback is the second-long "blip" followed by the show restarting at first slide, but it's a minimal distraction in this particular environment.

What are the license terms for having a flash player with a digital signage screen? Is there a ceratain license for this?

  • FMS & Flash Player for digital signage

    Hello,
Maybe here I will find the answer.
I would like to use FMS3 together with Flash Player for
displaying advertisement content and/or live stream movies
(copyrighted by my company) in company's points of sales. Of course
I need to buy FMS license.
But is such a usage of Flash Player legal? I mean - should I
obtain any license for Flash Player to display some ads in point of
sales on public displays? Or is Flash Player 100% free for
    commercial use?

Thank, I think the same, but what I actually afraid is that
after sucessfull installations I will have to pay a penalty or
something. For codecs license it's ok. Flash Player itself is a
    problem.

  • Mac Mini for Digital Signage?

I need to bring digital text and video on a vertical large plasma or lcd screen at least 42".
It should be text on top video in the bottom.
Is the Mac Mini output compatible with lets say a Sony PFM42X1/S?
Is the DVI output of the Mac Mini compatible with the DVI-D input of the Sony TV? Will the display be very sharp and clear?
I will turn the TV 90 degrees to a horizontal position? Is there a way the Mac Mini can go along with this??
And last not least, what software would be best to display the text and the video images simultanously?
Lots of questions, but I hope somebody of you has already done this and will be able to tell me if it works well or has any problems.

    Hi,
    - I need full screen application. Can I use Strobe in full screen mode (monitor HD 1920-1080) inside a web page.
Also in Portrait and landscape way ?
SVE: OSMF supports fullscreen, since flash supports it. Switching from landscape to portrait was not tested on monitors, but you should be able to control this from the video player, by adding some code.
    - can I overlay text over video (not ads like youtube ads but price o other words over a exact point of the video for the exact duration of 1 video and change text for the following video in playlist ?
SVE : Yes - there are captioning or text layout examples in the osmf code samples
    Playlist
1° playlist video -> 1° overlay text in a exact poit of the video  2° playlist video -> 2° (different from 1° and in different position)  ...
Is this possible and simple ?
    - can I manage playlist in advanced mode  (I'd like to create playlist in dynamic way, with languages like php fetching data from DB)
SVE: Possible, but not very simple. Please look at the Strobe media playback  JS API examples and the playlist feature

  • Share your exporting workflow for HD content

    Dear Members of the Forum,
Could you please give me a piece of advice (or direct me to relevant posts) regarding setting the export video-audio settings in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3? Basically I’m looking for an Adobe Premiere Pro workflow for DV AVI and AVCHD files.
I have HD footage shot in both DV AVI - 30F(Canon HV40) and AVCHD – 30F (Canon HF200) formats. My goal is to export the edited footage with less possible quality loss into a format that could be played on the well known Western Digital HD Media Player: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=735 or burned onto a BD disc.
What I’ve tried so far is to export the dv.avi footage shot with my Canon HV40 utilizing the ‘Movie’ preset in Adobe using both ‘Microsoft DV AVI’ and ‘Uncompressed Microsoft AVI’ settings. In both of the cases the exported file was not recognized by the WD hd media player. I'm not sure if it will be recognized by my BD player if I burn it on a BD disc.
Exporting in MPEG2 format through the ‘Adobe Media Encoder’ machine was successful and playable but naturally suffered from significantly reduced quality of the output compared to the input.
In short, what is the workflow you follow when exporting hd footage and aiming to achieve little quality loss in the output?
    Thank you.

Thank you Ann. I followed your advice but still face some problems. Here is what I did:
    1. Took my original AVCHD footage and converted it in .AVI files using Cineform Prospect HD.
    2. Imported and edited the footage in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3
    3. Exported the edited footage using the 'MPEG-2 Blu Ray' preset in the Adobe Media Encoder
    4. Ended up with two files: the video in .M2V and audio in WAV.
This posed a new dilemma: how do I play these files on my Western Digital HD Media Player?
Should I use another converter to combine the M2V and WAV files into one playable file?
Or, I should use a software to burn those two files onto a DVD and play them on my DVD player?
I want to avoid burning BD discs as I don't have a BD burner at the moment.
In short, please help me understand how to export HDV edited content --> HD files with less possible loss of quality and to be able to
play the exported files either on on a regular DVD or even better to play them from
an external hard drive connected to my Western Digital HD Media Player. Here are the formats that the player supports:
    Video - AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG1/2/4), MPG/MPEG, VOB, MKV (h.264, x.264, AVC, MPEG1/2/4, VC-1), TS/TP/M2T (MPEG1/2/4, AVC, VC-1), MP4/MOV (MPEG4, h.264), M2TS, WMV9
I guess many people faced the same predicament but I cannot find literature on the topic. Please help.
    Thank you!

  • DD 5.1 Surround Workflow to create TS file for Digital Cinema

    I need a little help.
My objective is to create a test file for digital cinema. The client requires at the end a TS DD 5.1 mpeg HD file....
I have tried creating the project in Premiere CS4, which is straight forward. The issue I have is in the export. I have been using the surcode plugin. The first question I have is in the routing of the channels. I can only seem to create a Premiere project with the layout of L,R,Ls,Rs,C,LSE where as the surcode only gives you the layout option of L,R,C,LSE,Ls,Rs, which I believe is the industry standard...so I have no idea if the plugin will read the channel allocation correctly.
However, my bigger issue is that I'm not able to export a TS file from Premiere. There is an option to do so, but when I try that with the surcode plugin, the media encoder just crahses...
I have been able to create a single 5.1 surround mpeg file from Premiere with the surcode plugin, but its of no use to the client..and I can't think of a way that would turn it into a TS file that would keep the 5.1 DD.
I have many questions, and there are many things I don't understand...so if anybody is able help at all that would be wonderful.
    Many thanks

What will be the playback medium of this file? How will you deliver the file? Will the client be playing the file on a computer, or on a Home Theater system? Does the client want, or need, a visual signal, as well, or it just the Audio signal that is important?
The best delivery system that I can think of is to create your material in PrPro in a 5.1 SS Project. Unless the client is looking for just the Audio with no Video, handle the two as separate, in that once your mixing is done, you will Export the Audio as an MPEG file, in the AC3 format, with the DD 5.1 SS encoding from the Minnetonka Audio SurCode DD 5.1 SS plug-in. Export the visual material (Video) as a DV-AVI Type II elemental stream. Go to Encore, and Import the DV-AVI as a Timeline, then the AC3 as an Asset. From the Project Panel, drag the AC3 to the respective Timeline, and author a DVD. You can have menus for navigation, if needed, or just make the single Timeline your First Play, with no Menus. If you want it to Loop, set its End Action back to itself and it'll loop until the user hits Stop. Once the layout is as you wish, you have two choices:
Burn to a DVD disc for delivery, or Burn to Folder. The former will get your 5.1 Audio (and Video) onto a common DVD for play on the computer or in a Home Theater system. The latter will yield the VIDEO_TS folder with the necessary files contained within this folder. The Audio & Video will be in a .VOB format, but will be in MPEG-2 form. Note: this will be a DVD-Video disc, and playable in any DVD player. Whether one hears the Audio in stereo, or in SS, will depend on the capabilities of their playback system. Because it IS a DVD-Video it MUST contain Video. Now, this could be anything you choose, from Titles with instruction, to Black Video (I'd create this for real, rather than rely of purely the systhetic Black Video from Premiere - more on this, if you need it), to abstract patterns of your design, or choosing.
Now, if one needed just the pure MPEG-2 file, outside of the VIDEO-TS structure for playback on a computer only, you could take the .VOB and rename its extension .MPEG, instead of .VOB. Still, the playback channels would be solely dependent on the equipment the file was played on. The software player might figure into this, as well, because it must have the capability to process DD 5.1 SS signals. Check out any software player that your client will be using. If you deliver the DVD-Video disc, mentioned above, a DVD software player will be required. Most computers today come with one, and most of these are DD capable, but again, it depends on the hardware on the computer, and how it's configured, that will determine if one hears the Audio in stereo, or in DD 5.1 SS.
Before I launched off doing anything, other than editing and mixing, I would ask some very specific questions. As Harm points out, there is no TS "file," but a TS "folder." This would be a red flag for me, indicating that the client might be confused, or know just a little and not quite get the full picture. This would dictate to me, that I need to ask some other questions and phrase them in a way that yielded useful info and instructions to me.
1.) Exactly what equipment will you wish to play this material (don't start talking files yet)?
2.) Is this equipment capable of playing Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound?
From the answers to those two questions, you can then start filling in the blanks.
If the client wants something to drop into a DVD player, hooked up to a DD 5.1 SS capable system, then you’re home free. If they want something that will play on a computer, Ask these questions:
1.) What computer software will you use to play this material (still no mention of file)?
2.) Is the computer equipped for DD 5.1 SS decoding and playback?
These answers will direct you even more. If you get proper answers of, say CyberLink PowerDVD of #1 and "yes," for #2, go on to the next set of questions:
1.) Can I deliver this material on a DVD-Video (the format and medium of commercial DVD’s)? Note: this will be a DVD that will play on a computer with proper software, or a Home Theater system, and will contain both Video and Audio. The client can turn the TV, or .computer’s monitor off, if they do not wish to view any Video signal, or you can create Black Video so there is nothing to see. With this delivery format, there has to be a Video stream, but it can be black.
2.) Can I deliver this material on a Data DVD? Point out that a Data DVD will only play on a computer and not on a set-top player through the TV and a Home Theater’s Audio system. Some people do not know the difference, and you cannot trust your client to, unless you specifically ask them.
If the answer to #1 is "no," and the answer to #2 is "yes," go on to the next question:
If I deliver this material to you on a Datat DVD, will an MPEG-2 file with DD 5.1 SS be acceptable? If so, I'd still do the Burn to folder to get the .VOB and rename it to .MPEG. Test this file on your system. A .VOB can contain a lot of things, but yours was created with no Menu or other material, so it should be just the pure .MPEG-2 file. Still, test, before you deliver.
Now, on the off chance that your client needs something like an SACD, or DVD-Audio, you will be shopping for software. Before you do, I’d post to the Adobe Encore forum and ask Neil Wilkes for his suggestions for the creation of DVD-Audio discs. Believe every word he types and follow his recommendations to the letter.
Good luck, and if you need more detail, or other suggestions after you query your client, please ask,
    Hunt
[Edit] I see that you also mention "HD." This will mean either a BD (Blu-ray Disc) for delivery, or a BD folder, Burned to a DVD-Video. If you will have HD Video material, your best going the full BD route. If you only will have Audio, the "HD" will not come into play. What exactly do you mean with the term "HD?" This can make a world of difference.
[Edit 2] Sorry about the formatting in the second paragraph. I cannot seem to get it to display properly, though it looks perfect in the editing screen.

  • PURCHASED iTUNES NOT AUTHORIZED FOR DIGITAL EXPORT

I am trying in vein to burn the songs I have bought in the iTunes store to a CD so I can play them in my car. However they come with a small padlock symbol in the top left corner. If I try to burn them onto a CD, a message comes up saying the song is not authorized for digital export. I have chosen audio CD in iTunes-preferences-advanced-burning, but this has no effect, I have authorized my computer also. Does this mean I have wasted my money buying these tunes and have to sit at my mac to listen to them and nowhere else?? This is making my blood boil!

Dragging it to the desktop is the problem. It sounds like you're not burning the disk from within iTunes. Create a playlist in iTunes and select Burn Playlist to Disc. And make sure the iTunes prefs for Burning are set to Audio CD. I have an iTunes store purchase in my library that is burned to CD and plays in my car. When I just dragged that track to my desktop, I see the little lock you're speaking of. Try burning from iTunes and it should work.

Make sure you have the Burning preferences set to "audio CD".

We are in the process of investigating Active Directory via LDAP.  I have seen documentation for the Video Portal but not much on the Digital Signage. First does anyone have any experience with this and its limitations or gotcha's?
The real question that has been asked of me from our security organization is regarding password change requirements.  That is when the AD User ID password changes, does the DMM for that same User ID password change?  If not is there any way to do this?

You might find helpful information about these topics in the "Configuring Authentication Settings" section of the DMM 5.1 user guide on Cisco.com. Within that larger section, I think you'll find the synchronization references to be of particular interest.
