Workflow for using photos in FCP?

I'm editing a sequence with 1920X1080 video (pro res) and a lot of photos. As you can see from my specs, I have plenty of RAM. However, a few minutes into my sequence I'm getting a "preparing video for display" message (I am monitoring on my desktop, not externally) every time I move anything. Is there anyway to stop this from happening? Do i have to do something to prepare the images for FCP? I am using JPEGS and the frame size is 5184X3456. Thanks for the help.

The biggest dimension size FCP can handle is 4K. Your photos are 5K. Size your photos to match the video. If you are zooming in on your photos then make them a little bigger than 1920X1080.
Also, make sure your photos are RBG not CMYK.

  • Workflow for jpeg's to FCP

I am working in Photo Shop Elements 6 and FCS 3.  I have jpeg picture files (2048 x 1536) that I need to convert for use in a DVD project being authored in Final Cut Pro 7.  The FCP timeline sequence is 720 x480 DV/DVC-Pro -NT.  What is the workflow for preparing stills for use in Final Cut DVD?
    Thanks for the help

Change the image size in Image settings and create batch action to do same steps  in all images.

  • Workflow for building Photo book Page in Photoshop & Lightroom

I am working on publishing a Photo Book using MyPublisher and will be laying out each page in Photoshop rather than using their templates.
I need advice on the best workflow for accomplishing this task--here are some details:
    1. Images are Imported to Lightroom, are Flagged, and adjusted with Develop settings (Cropping, Basic Panel, Paintbrush etc.)
    2. I do add some capture sharepening to the image in Lightroom (not much).
    3. Use the EDIT IN Photoshop CS6 with 1 or more images from Lightroom as SMART OBJECTS.
    4. In Photoshop, I am changing the Image Size (sometimes upsizing for full page spreads) and resolution (everything goes to 300 DPI).
    5. Doing more intense Creative Sharpening for each image.
    6. I am using a variety of custom actions to layout pages with 1, 2, or 3 images plus text. I create a new document that is sized for the entire page (11.08 x 14.08 @ 300dpi for Deluxe Hardcover). I fill the background page with a custom pattern simulating textured paper and then layout the images for either a Left or Right Hand page.
    7. Saving page as a Photoshop File and re-importing into Lightroom
    8. Publishing the Photoshop Files as JPEGS with Medium Sharpening for Glossy Paper
    9. Importing the JPEG of the Page into My Publisher as a single image the sive of the entire page.

I often use Photoshop to set photos in iPhoto books. I am not sure how Apple does the trimming of its books, but I have had no problems with edge trimming of pages whose photographs to go to the edge. There is no white to be seen. I haven't closely compared the original 11" x 8.5" photo with the one in the book, but generally the results look right.
In terms of working out the gutter for two page spreads for a 11" x 8.5" book size. I measured an existing book and found the physical page width to be 11" exactly. I measured the gutter to be 0.25". So that means using Photoshop to create the image size of 10.75" x 8.5". It seems to work okay.
Just interested if you have set a gutter, and if so, to what specification?

  • Workflow for moving photos/videos from iPhoto to LR

What is the workflow for making this move?

You can't run an iPhoto Library from a NAS. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
You can't convert a Managed Library to a Referenced Library (see below for definitions of managed and referenced) with iPhoto - and you probably shouldn't anyway, especially when the masters are on one volume and the library on another. See
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
    for more on why.
With Aperture, you can easily have the Masters on one volume and the Library on another, and you can convert the Library from Managed to Referenced easily.
However, if you di any editing your planned set up will not work. Both iPhoto and Aperture will never edit your original file. All processing in these apps is virtual. So, if you fix red-eye for instance, the image in iPhoto/Aperture will have the red-eye fixed. But the image on the NAS will be your original file, with the red-eye. So any device that accesses the images directly from the NAS will have he original image, not the processed one.
    Is that what you want?
    Regards
    TD
    Definitions:
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Workflow for using Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite

I am considering purchasing Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite as I have noticed some unsatisfactory results in Compressor, even though I am generally impressed with Compressor and happy with the program and the options it gives, especially with exporting movie files for the web.
Right Now, if I want to export my timeline to MPEG2, I either export directly to Compressor, or I will export to a Quicktime movie file, not self-contained, and then import that into compressor. The latter of the two is certainly a faster method but I have noticed quite a few mixed opinions on these forums as to whether you lose quality or not with that method because video is being "recompressed"
Can anyone tell me the workflow when using Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite? Will there be an option in FCP to export directly to Sorenson Squeeze as you do with Compressor, or will I have to export a Quicktime reference file and then import that into Squeeze? I noticed a few posts on this forum suggesting that you have to export a self-contained quicktime file for Sorenson Squeeze. How can that be good, as you would definitely be compressing the image more than once?
Also, maybe this is a quesion for the DVDSP forum, but I was wondering what codec is used by DVDSP for encoding the menus. Does it use Compressor in the background? or something else? And if I am using Sorenson Squeeze, will DVDSP use Sorenson for encoding the menus, or will there even be an option to tell DVDSP to use Sorenson for encoding the menus?
thanks for any input advice anyone can offer.

thanks for that info. that is really good to know.
the only thing is the box that says recompress all frames is shaded unless I check the box that says make movie self-contained. so, does that mean anything? does that mean that it will only recompress frams if you make the movie self-contained? and will never recompress if you just export a reference file?
    thanks.

  • Workflow for GoPro photo timelapse in Final Cut Pro?

Shot a timelapse using photographs and the self timer with the GoPro HD.  But am having troubles with the proper sizing for final cut pro.
I used Quicktime 7 to make all the images into a .mov.  But when I bring that file into final cut, it's nowhere close to as sharp as it should be.  The photos come out of the GoPro at 2592 × 1944 @ 72dpi.   When I kick it out in Quicktime 7 it comes out as, 1224 × 917.  Then when I bring it into a 1280 × 720 timeline, it looks like junk.
Any suggestions on the proper workflow and settings to do this the best possible way?

    Hi,
Personally I do stills time-lapse conversions in motion.
Set up a project same as your sequence (1280x720 in your case)
Import the stills as an image sequence, resize (and do moves if you wish) on the oversized image sequence.
Then export it as a QuickTime movie in the same codec as your fcp sequence.
    Works a treat for me.
    Cheers

  • Best workflow for using iMovie as a long term home video storage

I want to store all my home videos in iMovie since it's organizes them well and integrates with Front Row and iLife.
As we know iMovie converts videos to AIC codec when importing which makes them insanely large. AIC is quick and good for editing but it makes no sense to store videos like that.
On the other hand H.264 codec is good for storing and playing videos. iMovie can work with H.264 .mov but it makes editing just a little slower.
    I suggest the following workflow:
    - Import videos from a camcorder.
    - Edit imported videos - remove junk, trim, etc.
    - Make iMovie project to produce nice movie for family (if needed).
    - Batch convert imported videos to H.264.
This will make iMovie library up to 80% smaller in size. And videos will still be available for playing and editing in iLife.
Can you suggest a better workflow?

    {quote:title=AppleMan1958 wrote:}I would not convert them to h.264, because if you re-use, you will have a generational data loss as your reconvert to AIC.{quote}
Are you sure I will have to reconvert to AIC? I tried putting H.264 encoded clips into events and iMovie seems to deal with them the same way. Just editing (selecting, scrubbing) is a little slower.
How do you suggest storing home footage?

Ah, never mind. I just remembered that Apple now has a good set of basic tutorials to get up and running with all the FCS appz.

  • Workflow for using proxies and AVCHD

I'm working on a 6 camera mulitcam project of a theatrical performance and I'm using Premiere CC.  The footage is all spanned AVCHD from Canon Vixia's.  My machine is pretty good but no way is it going to play 6 streams of AVCHD at once (I've done 4 and that was pushing it!).
I've done a little searching on the forum and found this post:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4877276#4877276
    In particular, Fuzzy says:
    The workaround is the following:
    - create a folder for your proxies next to the folder containing original footages and name it e.g. AVCHD.Proxies;
    - transcode your MTS files into MPEG2 ones with the same file names and MTS file extention (or run Batch Rename in Bridge after transcoding with MPG file extention);
    - close your PrPro project, created out of original MTS files;
    - temporarily rename AVCHD folder containing original MTS files to e.g. AVCHD.Sources and AVCHD.Proxies to AVCHD;
    - open up PrPro project and enjoy: all your original AVCHD files are now linked to MPEG2 proxies.
When you're done, reverse rename folders.
This idea appeals to me but I've got a question.  My files are all spanned AVCHD.  It seems, in his example, that each .mts has a corresponding mpeg2.  With my spanned clips, how will Premiere know how to put them together properly?  I don't really mind if there is a one frame drop between the mpeg2 clips but will this majorly screw things up when I swap the proxy footage out?
Is there a better way to do things now, one year on?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hmmmm... still having problems.
I got back to work this morning (having spent most of the weekend and yesterday raking leaves) to find that all of the mts have successfully been transcoded into mpg clips.  I added a new STREAM folder, moved the clips and changed the file extension to .mts.  So far so good.
I decided not to stitch the spanned mts clips first because I'm on a Mac and I haven't found a good (free) stitcher.  I have a nice Windows one that I like but i didn't have the time to move the clips to a Windows machine, stitch them and then move them back again.  This may still need to be done because I'm faced with a new problem.
When I go into Premiere and try to import the mpg clips (now hiding under the .mts extension) I get the error "The file has an unsupported compression type".  This happens if I use the regular import OR the Media Browser.
Any ideas?  I compressed these in AME using the default "Match Source - Medium Bitrate".  I used the H.264 format, not the MPEG2 format thinking that Macs like H.264 but I wonder if this is the problem
Thanks for everything, by the way.  You've been more than helpful

  • What is the workflow for using a Shure X2U USB preamp to record voiceovers in PP CS6.02 for Mac

Although I have managed to get the Shure X2U working with PP CS6.02, the trial and error method of selecting correct Audio Hardware and Audio Output Mapping is very haphazard and causes PP to crash almost every time. "Premiere Pro 6.0" appears in the Audio MIDI Setup program and I have the following selected:
    Built In Microphone    2 In
    Built In Input               2 In
    Built In Output            2 Out
Shure Digital              2 In        Drift ticked
Is there a method of being able to take audio level using the program meters before actual recording begins, or do I have to alter levels on the fly whilst recording the beginning voiceover to obtain the correct level?
    Using Intel i7 Macbook Pro

I haven't ever used Premiere to record VO's. However to address your volume question I have always adjusted volume after the recording is over with. I use windows and in windows I have always just used windows built in volume controls for line in. I usually try to record everything as loud as possible without having a bunch of background noise. Then in post I simply set the levels where I want them for whatever my edit purposes are at the time. I'm fairly sure that Mac's probably have some sort of line in volume control as well although you might need to look it up.

  • What is the workflow for creating templates in full FrameMaker and pushing them to XML Author?

    Hi All,
I'm working for a large organization (3000+) that is subdivided into 60+ business units.  I'm trying to figure out the workflow for using full FrameMaker to create a template that I can provide my business units to fill in via XML Author, send back to me, and then I can publish into a number of products using the Tech. Comm. Suite.  I am somewhat new to XML so I am not sure how to get my structure and format to translate.
Can anybody clarify what the general workflow would be for this process?  All I have been able to find is the flowchart showing full FM to XML to XML Author and back to full FM.  From my test driving of the Tech Comm Suite though it has not appeared that easy.
    ---Corey---

    Hi Corey...
Here's a rough outline of what is needed.
    1) First, you'll need to define the data model that your documents are using. This could be some existing model like DITA or a new custom model. Depending on the complexity of your document's needs, this may drive that decision.
    2) Once you've got a model, you'll need to create a structure application (in full FM). This structure application defines the model and appearance of documents. This will provide the fundamental structure of the "template" as well as placeholder text for the elements where you want people to provide information.
    3) Then you have to install the structure application on each of the XML Author installations. This involves copying the structure application definitions file (structapps.fm) onto the client systems as well as the structure application files (into the proper location as indicated in the structure application definition). The structure application definition may reference these files at a network location, which might simplify the deployment, but would require that each person is connected to that network in order to create the files (pros/cons with this approach).
Once that's set up, your XML Author users should (in theory) be able to create a new document using the new structure application, then send you the resulting files. Lots of hand waving here .. but that's the general idea.

  • Problem using "Photo to Movie" and "Toast 8 Titanium" for dvd slideshow

I used photo to movie to compile a 20 minute collection of photos for a relative's funeral. All the files were still photos (no video) but I added 4 songs (that I had in iTunes).
When I go to "create movie", I normally select NTSC for toast, but when I do so toast gives me an error saying "filename.dv is an unsupported format and cannot be imported".
I just went throw this process a day ago for a wedding slideshow (using same computer and workflow) and it worked fine!!! What could be causing this?
I have downloaded all the latest updates of both toast and photo to movie.

I finally figured out (after 8 hrs of troubleshooting) that there was one photo in there it didnt like. When I finally found the photo (by process of elimination) and replaced it, everything worked fine. Just wish the error messaging would be more specific to help me locate the problem!
