Workflow HELP : switching footage from PC to Mac

Hi,
I'm trying to switch my footage from a PC to a Mac to have my colorist do color grading.
The problem:
His Mac has only 1 HD slot left Internal and his logic board has a HD size limitaton which is inferior to my footage space (500-750 GB unsure which) I'm unsure about using EXT HD with firewire to work at color grading with AE.
Will my colorist be able to to work on firewire EXT HDs? (they will be HTF formatted.)
I working with CFHD avi so is 16 MB/sec and it's VRB which I'm unsure from how much to how much; streams are supposed to have an impact on this as well (but I'm unsure what is defines exactly).
Thank you.
Can anyone give me guidance, I'm quite lost with this and IT people all seems to give me different answers.

>they will be HTF formatted.
Windows does not read Mac-formatted (you surely meant HSF+) discs and vice versa. Not natively, that is. You will need MacDrive or a similar commercial product to do so. However, you are combining several critical things here:
a) Firewire drives often require special drivers on Windows
b) Most PCs only have FW 400 plugs (if at all)
c) Formatting the drive on Mac may make it impossible to even mount it automatically on PC
There's a lot of points where it can go wrong, so my advise is to stay away from even trying (unless you can borrow/ rent an external RAID to experiment). Instead, look into getting a NAS drive with 2 Ethernet ports, then use it as a "storage server". plugging in network cables is certainly easier than going through all the trouble with your other setup.

I appreciate the advice, but I've discovered that my OS has to be updated first (was 10.6.8) and am in the process of upgrading to Yosemite. Then I will try to login to Creative Cloud on the Mac and from there navigate as you describe. I hope to report this worked!

  • HELP!  Transition from PC to MAC for iTunes/iPod

Okay, so I'm thinking about making the switch from PC to MAC. I understand how to move my music files from one machine to another, but need more specific information on moving my full library (i.e. already attached artwork, and playlists to be more specific). I've got 36,000 songs in my library, with many playlists (too many to re-create from scratch) and artwork that was manually attached for several of the files (over the past couple of years). I don't want to lose any of this. Also, will I need to reformat my iPod (and the 5 other ones in the house), in order to do regular syncs going forward. Appreciate the help anyone can give here.

I forgot, if you want to keep all your playlists, leave the itunes folder on your external drive, or copy to your mac, then redirect itunes to your new folder.

  • Itunes + Switching Library from PC to MAC

I've been reading the FAQ's on iTunes, and I've notived it only has guides that shows how to transfer your music from PC to another PC or Mac to Another Mac.
I'm buying a MacBook Pro this week, and I want to keep all my music, is this going to be possible? If so, can anyone point out a guide in which I can do this?
    Thanks,

    Select: For Windows Switchers
Select: Transferring Files from Windows to Mac
Select: More about transferring files from Windows to Mac
Select: Transferring your Music from a Windows computer
Do the stuff they say to do.
If you have music from the iTMS on your PC be sure to deauthorize the PC (from within iTunes Windows) before you try to play that music on the new Mac. It will save you grief later.
    On Windows:
    Pathname:
    My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    Find the files:
    iTunes library.xml
    iTunes 4 music library.itl
Be sure a copy of both is in your iTunes folder you transfer, or just copy them to the Mac if you've already copied the music over.
    On the Mac, go to:
    iTunes: File: Import
... and browse to the file you copied from Windows:
    iTunes Music Library.xml
If the extension is different (ie .txt; sometimes it changes when transferring across platforms) just edit it to .xml before you try importing.
The .xml file should import fine; it's the same format and is named exactly the same way on both platforms (don't ask me why I have two different names in my example above; I found conflicting information; but it doesn't really matter. Use whatever you find there as is). That's where you library data (playlists, ratings, etc) resides."
    Hope that helps.

  • Switching subscription from Windows to Mac

I have a CC subscription and would like to switch it from my Windows computer to my Mac.  I made a few searches but I'm having a brain-fart on good search terms and haven't found what I'm looking for.
Is there a step-by-step for making this switch?  Or could someone point me in the right direction?
Your time is most appreciated - and observed in good thoughts.
    All the very best!

There is no need to switch.  You are allowed to have the software installed and working on two machines, and since it is CC it means you can have mixed systems, meaning one installation could be Windows and one could be Mac.  So you only need to be concerned with installing on the Mac.  If you want to you can sign out of the Windows installation, but it is not required.

  • Workflow for 4k footage from Canon C500/AJA Ki Pro Quad

Can FCP 7 import 4k footage from the AJA Ki Pro Quad?
What we're doing is shooting simultaneously on 1080 and 4k, and keeping the best stuff on 4k and dumping the rest. We will continue to edit in 1080 and just keep a library of 4k for now with the hope that in the future a new version of Final Cut comes out so we can leapfrog X. (We shoot mostly wildlife so shelf life is important for our stock.) So while I don't expect to process or even edit the 4k material in FCP7, can it at least do a file transfer or is there a better way to do this?
    Thank you.

You may want to take a look at Adobe Premiere Pro, which gives you 4K support in a familiar, FCP-7 like editing paradigm.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adobe-at-ibc-2013/adobe-premiere-pro-cc-ultra-hd4kray- support/
Premiere Pro has added the functionality of being able to change Sequence Settings (frame size, frame rate and codec, etc.) at any time - allowing you to edit in Pro Res, then switch the same sequence to your acquisition source material.

  • Switching over from pc to mac and need help!

Ok so I plan on getting the new imac they are revealing today, but I'm not completely sure how to transfer all my music over from the pc and how the iPhone will sync as I've heard that the mac didn't recognize the iPhone after it had already been synced with a pc. I was just going to buy an external hd for the music and other things, but I really don't want to spend $100 plus for something that is only for transfer and some backup. I was considering burning cd's as well as I only have about a 250 song library and many blank cd's. Which choice or other option would be best? As for the not recognizing problem, is there something I have to do to like "format" it for mac and a feature I need to set up on the mac? Any help is appreciated.

    taymon21,
The iPhone will show up on both a Windows-based PC and a Mac without needing to be reformated. From the File Menu in iTunes you can choose to sync your purchased music back to the computer.
In addition the Apple Retail Stores offer a service to move your files over.
You can burn approximately 150-200 songs per CD as a Data CD in iTunes, and import from there if you would like. You can set the CD Burning preference in iTunes in Windows by going to the Edit Menu, Preferences, Advanced Tab, then the burning section. Choose the option for "Data CD"
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Switching itunes from PC to Mac, need a little help

Whats the best way to move my library in itunes without using an external hard drive (other then the ipod) anyone know how to do this with the ethernet cable?

If you are able to network the machines and use file sharing, technically you should be able to move the iTunes Music folder from one machine to the other

  • Workflow Question - Recently moved from PC to Mac

So, let me say that I'm a die hard Windows user -- in fact, in my "day job" I own a software development company and we're a "Microsoft shop". But, my side business is Photography and I'm making the switch to the Mac & Aperture. So, what I'm hoping to get from this post is a "yes, you can do that" or a "no, you can't do that" with Aperture. I'm happy to figure out how -- I just need someone to tell me if it's possible.
Here's my current workflow (coming from the PC - which required several applications to accomplish these steps):
    1) Import images and rename "IMG_1234.CR2" to "1234.CR2" -- essentially dropping the "IMG_" from the name. Is this possible w/ Aperture?
    2) Do all of the processing on the images (No questions here yet -- got that pretty well figured out in Aperture).
    3) Create a black & white version of each image. Currently doing this by making a duplicate version in Aperture. But, I would like it to be named "1234-BW.CR2" rather than just have "version 2" tacked on the end. Is this possible in Aperture?
    4) "Develop" the pics into jpg's. Again, the final image names should be "1234.jpg" and "1234-BW.jpg" respectively. Again, the question has to do with renaming the original & duplicate version of the image.
    5) Choose all of the color versions of the photos and then selectively pick some of the b/w versions and export them to a "Web" size along w/ Thumbnail versions that will be posted on my web site. (Again, this should be easy if I can name things like I want them to be named in question 3 & 4.)
So, right now I'm the biggest thing that I'm having a problem with in naming the images -- how flexible is Aperture with this? I've tried to customize the naming but can't see to figure out how to simply remove the "IMG_" when importing and then how to tack on "-BW" when creating a duplicate version.
So far I really like Aperture -- it will ultimately save me from having to use 5 different applications on the PC and thus greatly improve the efficiency of my workflow. There are some things I've noticed that would be nice -- for example, on the PC I used a program called Bibble Pro to "develop" my Canon RAW files. Bibble is a little smoother (read faster) when making some adjustments. For example, when I'm in full screen mode and adjust the exposure, contrast or sharpening Aperture is not as smooth and "real-time" as Bibble. (And, the Mac I have is the top of the line iMac made today w/ 2GB of RAM. So, I would assume that processor speed is not an issue.)
Anyway, if you have any insight into this post please let me know. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide... If you want to see my web site to understand what I'm doing the URL is http://www.level3photography.com/proofs.aspx
    Thanks again!

Many folks from other disciplines think that applications should, well, just run on any computer. Not so with graphics apps. Photoshop, for instance, slows if not provided a second physical hard drive for scratch disk; Aperture craves GPU hardware; both gobble RAM; etc. Existing PSCS2 Photoshop performance improves up to 8 GB RAM, and we have not yet empirically determined the max amount of RAM Aperture will benefit from but it certainly is more than 2 GB.
iMacs are consumer machines, not pro graphics boxes, even though many folks successfully use them as such. And, "top of the line iMac made today" would include not the 7300 GT graphics but the 7600 GT graphics card and 3 GB of RAM rather than 2 GB.
All that said, your iMac should run Aperture well if you keep the box well maintained. Just don't be surprised if you do see some hardware imposed limitations.

  • Switching iTunes from PC to Mac

I copied my iTunes Library.itl file to my Mac's iTunes folder and deleted the other files in that were in that folder. I had been saving all my songs and movies to an external hard drive, so I just unplugged my external drive from the PC and plugged it into the Mac. (Since then, the Mac can read the hard drive, but if I try to move my external drive back to the PC, the PC can't find it. But that's another story.) At first nothing happened when I turned on iTunes. None of my old playlists popped out. I kept trying though by signing into iTunes and connecting (but not syncing) my iPhone. Then this window started popping up saying "The iTunes Library locked, on a locked disk or you do not have written permission for this file." I tried playing with it again by copying the .itl file on a disk from my old PC and replacing the file I had copied into the iTunes folder on the Mac, but the window keeps popping up. The only way I can start iTunes is by deleting that file. Please help. All I want to do is transfer my old songs, movies, and playlists to my iMac.

    Hi BMcCrae,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
If all of your devices were tied to the same Apple ID account before switching from the PC to the iMac, you do not need to create a new iTunes Store account.
The articles below will explain how to sign out of the iTunes Store account and sign in with the Apple ID you've been using.

  • Workflow help needed, transitioning from iPhoto/iPhoto Library Manager

HI all, I am using latest Aperture, iPhoto, and 10.6.3 on lan connected macs and need some help setting up a workflow/libraries that represent some sanity amid the tens of thousands of photos that I have. Before getting Aperture3, i was using iPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager to work between an imac and an mbp; i would create a temp library to travel with on the mbp and then when I returned to the office I would merge the updated temp lib with the master lib housed on a huge external drive hanging off the imac. Using iPhoto Library Manager this is a lot of work and very slow indeed.
So with my new install of Aperture3, I am sure there is a better way, I just have not found a coherent tut that explains what I should be doing under these circumstances. I see that I can import iPhoto libraries, and that I can also use referenced files to get things into Aperture no matter where they are, or I can ??? Really confused on all the options.
Ideally, I think what we all want is a cloud like repository for all photos where users could check in and check out photos and have all the metadata preserved, but I guess they also want ice water down under, and haven't gotten that yet either.
Short of the above fairytale, what can I do? I do expect to have another mbp in the field soon, so that will be two machines/users that will need to pull things out of a master repository and check back in updated files as well as add new files to the collective.
    Thoughts? Thx.

    1) Import my one massive iPhoto Library into Aperture 3 - but do I use referenced or embedded options? Is there any advantage to leaving everything in iPhoto and just referencing from Aperture? Or do I get everything into Aperture and then just blow away iPhoto?
I see no reason to leave the files in iPhoto. If you agree you can do one of two things: either move them elsewhere and reference them or manage them in Aperture. Many folks recommend referencing them, but it's a choice only you can make.
I see no reason to continue with iPhoto.
    2) In Aperture, I can export a set of projects from the main repository into a "traveling library", say when I take the MBP out on assignment,
Correct: File -> Export Project as New Library
and then when I return, I just import that library back and the updates I made on the road will get integrated with the whole again? If so, that's worth the price of admission!
    Correct.

  • Need help importing footage from Handycam

    Hi everyone,
I just finished recording about 20 hours of footage on my new Sony Handycam HDR-SR11. I didn't record in HD, just the regular mode, which I believe is saved in a .mpg format? I'd like to import my footage into Final Cut Express to start editing. I'm running FCE4 on Mac OS X 10.4.11. When I first tried importing I chose the option "Log and Capture" but it didn't work. I took the suggestion of another user to download the free application MPeg Streamclip to save the footage in another format that FCE recognizes.
    A couple questions:
    1) What format should I save/convert my footage as to get the highest quality once it is imported into FCE?
    2) Is there a better way of getting my footage into FCE than this?
I'm quite new to editing on a mac (editing in general actually) so any suggestions or tips are greatly appreciated.

i'm also running fce 4.0, and there isn't a log and capture command. there is a log and transfer command, however, which won't work (which you already figured out). what works for me is to make sure my camcorder is plugged into my hard drive, my drive is connected to the computer and your scratch disc is correctly set. then, from the file menu, choose "capture". a window pops up with color bars. you then press play on your camcorder and immediately press the "now" button, which is located on the bottom right of the window (in between the "clip" and "project" buttons). this should work. good luck!

You do not move it, you install it like you did on the pc.  Install the Cloud manager application, sign in, install the applications.  You can retain the pc installation as a backup if you wish, or you can disable it by signing out.

I just got my iPhone. Haven't activated it yet, b/c I also ordered a Macbook Pro. Should I wait until the Macbook comes to activate my iPhone? Or can I just activate it using my PC, and then switch it over to the Macbook? I know that you cant do that with an iPod unless you wipe it completely.
I ordered Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac, so I think with a cable I'll be able to load all my iTunes onto my new Mac from my current PC. Will Parallels be able to do anything regarding iPhone migration (contacts, etc.)?
