Workflow Keeps Putting My Desktop In Trash

I've created a workflow that:
1. Gets a specified folder on USB stick, moves to trash.
2. Gets a specified folder on Macintosh HD, moves to trash.
3. Gets a specified folder on Macintosh HD, copies to USB stick.
4. Ejects USB stick.
There is no command in my workflow that says "move Desktop to trash"! I'm baffled. Not to mention freaked out about my Desktop disappearing.
The only thing I can think of is that in Step 2, the folder on the Macintosh HD might already have been deleted. As such, there would be nothing for Automator to delete. But I just assumed Automator would pass over an instruction it couldn't perform, not replace it with something seriously wacked like moving my entire Desktop to the trash.
Any insights would be appreciated!

Good sleuthing! I wouldn't have thought of that, but in retrospect it makes sense. The way the Finder plug-in works, it will attempt to pass file and folder information to the workflow. If your first action can accept that information as input, it will process it! This is from Automator Help:
Saving a workflow as a plug-in
Mac OS X and certain applications allow you to add Automator workflows as plug-ins. When a workflow is saved as a plug-in and installed, it can be run by the system or application. For example, in the Finder a workflow can be run whenever a file is added to a folder by saving it as a folder action plug-in, or a workflow can be run using iCal alarms by saving it as an iCal Alarm plug-in.
Here are some of the standard types of plug-ins:
Finder plug-in
These workflows run when chosen from the Finder's contextual menu. Any items selected in the Finder will be passed as input to the first action of the workflow.
Folder Action plug-in
These workflows appear as one of the contextual menu options for a folder. Folder actions can launch the workflow whenever the folder is modified.
iCal Alarm plug-in
These workflows become alarms in the iCal application and can be scheduled to run at a specific date and time.
Image Capture
These workflows become automatic tasks that can be performed on image files immediately after they are downloaded from a digital camera by the Image Capture application. They can be selected from the Automated Tasks pop-up in the Import dialog.
Print Workflow plug-in
These workflows perform actions on files that have been saved as PDFs. They can be chosen from the PDF pop-up in the Print dialog. The file is first saved as a PDF formatted file, then the path to the PDF is passed to the first action of the workflow.
Script menu plug-in
Script menu plug-ins are placed in the Script menu.

  • I can't put anything on the trash it keeps saying that it has to be deleted

I was wondering if there is a way of fixing this problem I have with not being a able to put anything on the trash, it keeps me from being able to delete an application that has to go to the trash can before being deleted and I can't delete songs from itunes unless I go to the folder itself where all the songs are and delete them immediately as it doesn't let me put then on the trash

Sounds like a permissions issue. Open Disk Utility and repair permissions on your HD.

  • Help, I accidentally put a desktop icon the trash (my photo booth!). I don't  know how to undo it!

Help me. I accidentally created a desktop icon from Iphoto and when I wanted to get it off the desktop, I put it in the trash. Now, it appears that my entire photo collection is in the trash bin and I don't want it to be there! How do I tell it to take it back out of the trash bin???

Please explain in more detail, how you created, made or moved that "icon" to your desktop...?
If you not sure, open the trash, control click on the "icon" in the trash, select Get Info and report back.
If it looks like this > with nothing after it, then you need to drag it out of the trash and put it back into your user Pictures Folder.
If it is a copy or alies and you can currently open iPhoto and see all your photos, then there should not be any problem just emptying the trash and making it go away.

  • How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put things in the Trash? Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash.

How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put items in the Trash?  Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash. I have a MacBook OS X 10.5.8

The reason why some of the files are blocking the trash from emptying is because of specific ".app" files from third party companies like Adobe products. Not the user files or the various help documents but instead the actual mother program. Here's how to fix this problem:
    1) remove from the trash all the actual software programs like Photoshop, InDesign, DreamWeaver and so on and put them on the desktop.
    2) Command "I" (info) and when the dialog box opens go to the "Name & Extension" text box and remove the ".app" from the software name. Example: Photoshop.app change to Photoshop.
    3) the program icon will change to a "folder icon".
    4) put the folder icon back into the trash and you should be able to now empty the trash.
If you continue to get the error code 8003 it's because you may still have one or more software programs in the trash that needs to go through this process. Remember - it's not the user files or help documents or supporting files that is causing this but instead the "actual product programs".

  • Desktop in Trash... HELP!

My desktop icon has wound up in the Trash somehow and I am not able to remove it. If I try to open up anything that is sitting on my desktop, a dialogue box pops up asking me to drag it out of the Trash. I've created a folder entitled Desktop and have saved it in my home, but it's really becoming a nuisance. Eventually, I'll need to empty out my Trash and I'm afraid of what will happen to my desktop when I do. Also, when I download a file, it no longer saves it on the actual desktop, but in the abovementioned Desktop folder.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to put the desktop icon back in its proper place?
    Thx!

Welcome to Discussions - first, posting in CAPS is like SHOUTING, please don't.
Second, what are you trying to take out of the trash? If it's your desktop, just restart your computer and it will reappear. If something else is in the trash, click on the trash icon and select "open" then drag whatever is in there that you want onto the desktop.

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me how to send a mail in workflow keeping 1 receiver in CC and the other in TO.
I need to send a mail to an employee keeping his/her manager in CC through workflow.
    Regards,
    Lavanya

    Hi Lavanya,
I dont think its possible using Send mail step type.
But it can be done by using the FM SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1. Just create a method and Call this FM accordingly.
    Thanks,

  • Keep losing my desktop picture on macbook

I have my macbook pro linked to a samsung syncmaster SA550. i keep losing my desktop picture, when i leave the machine and return it from sleep mode, I am left with a grey screen, sometimes with no icons?

Probably the desktop picture is no longer on the macbook but on the syncmaster. Make sure that the desktop picture (itself, and not an alias) is on your macbook (e.g. the pictures folder) and set it again in the SystemPreferences/Desktop settings.

  • Can't move files, folders on desktop to trash

Since updating to 10.4.4, unable to move temporary files or folders from the desktop to trash. Dialog box appears with "finder requires that you type your password". Enter password and progress bar claims "operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient priveleges for some of the items".
I am logged in as administrator and have repaired permissions.

Click on the desktop so that nothing on the desktop is selected, and then choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info window, locate the Locked checkbox and clear it; if this box is grayed out, change the owner to yourself under Ownership & Permissions, and then clear the box. If it still doesn't work, verify that none of the items you are trying to throw away are locked.

  • How can I put files into the trash without login every time?

Every time I want to put items in the trash, after dragging things to the basket, I have to sign in.  Why? Can I set the defaul to allow me to do so without login?

The procedure below will reset the permissions of a user's home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later, including 10.8 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used under OS X versions older than 10.7.4.
Back up all data before you begin.
    Step 1
Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.
    Step 2
Press the following key combinations, in the order given:
    Command-3
    Shift-command-H
Command-I (the letter "I" as in "Info.")
The Info window of your home folder will open.
    Step 3
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Step 4
In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.
    Step 5
By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.
    Step 6
If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups other than "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.
    Step 7
Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window.

  • Is there a way I can create a folder for storage and put on desktop?

Is there a way I can create a folder for storage and put on desktop?

What you can do is move them into a sub folder where they are all grouped into one icon. Gets them off your screen, sort of.

  • What is "database.sqlite3"? It's keeping me from deleting my trash.

What is "database.sqlite3"? It's keeping me from empting my trash can.

    Hello:
I have no clue how you got that on your computer - it is not installed by OS X.
    http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/sqlite3
In any event, try emptying the trash while holding the option key down.
I use a little utility called "Cocktail" for really tough trash problems (be careful if you use Cocktail, it has very powerful capabilities).
