Workflow management: multiple catalogues or one master catalogue?

Hi everyone:
I am new to Lightroom 3.2. I am researching the best way to set up my digital workflow. I have a two-year old Macbook with no firewire (only USB), an external monitor (Cinema Display) and I am thinking of buying two ruggeds or 1 T Seagate external hard drives. I have a few questions about setting up my workflow. I have read differing opinions about whether to have one master catalogue and run that off my external hard drive or create separate catalogues with subfolders for images for different clients and a third option would be to have a master catalogue, a master folder for images, and a series of catalogues that index the master folder of images (if that's possible?). I also want to take into account with whatever approach I use that I only have a USB connection. Some of the files I work with are up to 70 MB and I probably only have 32 G of image files at the present time. I'm sure this will increase with time but I would appreciate any suggestions or best practices that you have found to work in your own workspaces. Thanks so much for your time and counsel!

I think a lot of people would say: ONE CATALOG. It doesn't get any simpler than that. Of course, there are many others who create a catalog for each "job" that they have, so they will have to speak for themselves. I enjoy the simplicity of one catalog, I don't want to have to keep switching catalogs, and by having one catalog, I can search across all my photos (you can't do that with multiple catalogs).
You seem to be implying that there is some relationship between folders and catalogs. Folders do not have to relate to catalogs (although they can if you want them to; but you have a single catalog, its not an issue).
A clarification: your catalog file should go on your fastest disk, usually the internal disk. Your photos can go just about anywhere, including internal, USB or network drives. I'm sure there are many others who have 70MB files on a USB disk (in fact, I do), and I just don't think the speed is an issue in this instance
I strongly recommend you keep your workflow as simple as possible. When the photos come out of the camera, put them in somewhere (a folder name of your choosing), and don't move them again (exception: when you need to move them to another hard disk). It doesn't get any simpler than that. Use Lightroom structures like keywords and metadata to achieve organization; do not use folder structure or file names to achieve organization. Use Lightroom for all your photo management. Use Lightroom for browsing your images. Use Lightroom as much as possible!

  • Managing Multiple iPods on One Computer

Can I manage three iPods on one computer? One is an iPod Mini and two are Fifth Generation 80 GB iPods, so I need to be able to have at least two different music libraries due to memory space. (Three would be preferable.) Does anyone know if this is possible? Thank you!
    Dell Desktop   Windows XP

If you are adding a second or more iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually.
If the iPods belong to different people, there are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and or user account.
    b) Creating multiple user accounts and having separate libraries.
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page:
Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:
    Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out if you need it. You can read about Windows user accounts here:

    Yes.

Create new playlist and put the music you want in it.

Transfer any purchases from the master iPad into iTunes via File>Transfer purchases from the menu at the top of iTunes or right click on the iPad name under the devices heading and select Transfer Purchases. Let the process complete.
Next .... right click on the iPad name on the left side of the iTunes window under the devices heading and select - Backup. Let the backup process computer. Then sync with iTunes  and eject the iPad
Connect the next iPad and right click on the iPad name under the devices heading and select - Restore from backup. Select the backup of the first iPad and let the process complete and then sync with iTunes. Eject the iPad.

  • Best workflow to place multiple projects into one master project?

Since FCP X seems to slow down with longer projects(this needs to be fixed soon) I am creating 4 15 minute projects for my  hour master. Should I copy and paste the shorter projects into the master or export them as self-contained QT files and re-import?
    Best.

Try copying and pasting into a new project first after rebooting and with nothing else running, not even networking.

  • Is it possible to manage multiple investments from one bank in one g/l acct

    HI,
My client has multiple investments in different plans with the same bank.
    eg:
KOTAK LIQUID (INSTITUTIONS) - DAILY DIVIDEND
KOTAK FLOATER LONG TERM - DAILY DIVIDEND
Is it possible to manage both of these in one G/l account.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Sailesh Sinha

    Hi,
Maintaining multiple GL accounts is good way because you would not know clear picture for each type of investments in same bank.
Whenever management is asking for details for different type of investments in same bank, then it will give us trouble. If it is not required you happily use single GL for multple investments.

  • What is the best way to manage multiple devices with one iMac - different users with seperate itunes accounts or one mac user with different itune logons and libraries?

    Hello
I have just purchased an imac which I am very happy with.  In our household we also have two iphones (one mine and one husbands) and one ipod (my sons). We all have individual itunes accounts set up on our previous computer (not a mac). We have sepereate apps and music, although there may be the odd occasion where we would like to share a song (if this is possible) across devices.
I am just wondering the best way to manage these devices using the new imac.  Should I create individual accounts to logon to the imac, then from within these launch our own itunes accounts and sync our devices with these.  Or should I be using one version of itunes, logging on to this with our different itunes usernames and storing things in libraries.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I am presuming that we cannot share downloaded apps and music between accounts because of the copyright issue,
Though I'm no copyright lawyer, as long as it's within a household, you can share content among users. Such sharing is, absent specific language preventing it not present in the iTunes Store terms of use, generally considered to be "personal use". So you can share apps and music amongst your users on your computer and with their devices. You just can't give any of that content to friends or relatives who don't live with you.
What I am not clear on, it making sure that this appears in each itunes account - is it easy to find the file storage folders that match the itunes accounts and what would these be?
The iTunes library and files are by default in a user's Home/Music folder. But you don't have to find the folder; in fact putting a file into the folder yourself won't add the file to iTunes. Just drag the file into the iTunes window. iTunes will copy it to the correct location.
    Regards.

  • Grouping the same Resources Names and summarizing % Allocation from multiple files in one master file

    Hello,
We are reviewing resource % allocation from multiple project files at once in a 'master' project file (via the Insert -> Project function). Each resource has the same name in each of the respective 'sub-files', and so we created a group in the master
    to group by name.
When we apply the group to the resource usage view, the hours summarize correctly for 'Work', but when switching to % allocation to make things easier, the 'Summary' line doesn't sum the individual lines below it:
url: goo.gl/r6daeI (I can't paste a link in this message right now)
Does anyone have a solution for this nesting?
    Thanks!

    VSAT Ryan,
I don't have Project open at the moment but a couple of thoughts come to mind. First of all it sounds like you are creating a dynamic master without a resource pool. In that configuration, your resources will show separately for each subproject. If you instead
create a static master (i.e. uncheck the Link to Project option in the lower right corner of the Insert Project window when you build the master), identical resources in each subproject will automatically be combined into a single resource in the new master.
Then you won't need to use grouping to see the data you want. Another advantage of creating a static master is that it will not be prone to file corruption like a dynamic master. The disadvantage of a static master is that it is a snapshot in time of the subprojects
and there will be no dynamic interaction between the static master and the subproject files. You will need to build a new static master each time you want to update the combined data for all subprojects. This however is a pretty easy process and you can record
a macro while doing it the first time such that it be even easier thereafter.
Another approach is to create a resource pool file. That consolidates all resources into a single resource only file and should also eliminate the need to use grouping to get the data you want. And with a resource pool, you won't necessarily need to create
a master since the pool file will contain the resource data you want. Use of a resource pool is however also a linked structure like a dynamic master and is therefore also prone to file corruption.
    Hope this helps
    John

  • Managing multiple devices on one account

Where can I get info about managing my children's devices under my account?  My daughter has an iPad mini and my son has an iPod.  They are currently sincing together...when my daughter gets a message, it is also going to my son's iPod.  How can I get them to be separate, but managed under my iTunes account?

  • How to manage multiple iPhones on one iPhoto account?

Hi folks. I'm stumped and need some assistance. I have a 2012 MBP and an iPhone 5. I'm running the most current software on both. I typically have no problems with iPhoto. My wife has an iPhone 5, bit no computer. Wanting to save her photos onto my computer, I plugged her phone into my MBP, it opened iPhoto automatically, and I followed the prompts to import the pictures from her phone. After completion, I cannot find her photos anywhere on iphoto or the package contents in finder.
I tried starting the import process over, but when I plugged in her phone a second time, I photo told me that all the pictures from that phone had already been imported. If I tried anyway, it would give me the "duplicate photo already exists. Do you want to import anyway?" Prompt.
I'm frustrated because I have no idea where to even look to find these photos that are supposedly already imported. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If it helps any, I was only running one account (mine) in iPhoto, and any import I do with my own phone still works fine. Thanks in advance for your help

When you get the "Duplicate Photos already imported " alert, then the photos are in your iPhoto Library.
Check, if her iPhone has the date set correctly.  If the dates are correct, sort the events by date from the "View" menu: View > Sort events > By Date > Descending
