Workflow problems: Import selection, 9 keywords in list?, Exporting image attributes...

I have a few problems incorporating Lightroom into my work flow.
Is there a way to:
Select recursive directories when importing photos from disk without
a copy. Currently, I can only choose files directory(folder) by
directory.
Get more than 9 keywords in a shortcut list.
Add photos from a previously accessed CF card to a catalog in a short
time.
Currently it takes about the same time as loading a card from scratch.
Export image attributes to text file
(filename followed by keywords, rating...)
Basic principles of my work flow:
1. Flash card is used until contents roughly matches the archive media
size.
This means a 1GB card fills to 700MB after deleting rejects, and
a 4GB card will easily fit on a DVD.
2. Photos on card are categorized and rated/rejected/deleted one or more
more times while the card is being filled. This results in:
-Copies of retained images to the categorized directory structure on the
computer.
-Rejects deleted from card, and not appearing on the computer
-Category, and rating information for each image in an easily parsed
list.
3. Post processing is done and printing is done on highest rated images
in each category.
For example:
Day 1: start with a blank 4GB CF card, and shoot 1.5GB for customers A and
B.
Customer A has 8 subjects a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h; Customer B has 12
subjects
a,g,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r. Note that some names for customers A and B
are the same. That night, I delete rejects off the card down to
800MB,
and copy the saved images to the directory structure corresponding
to each customer on the computer. Then a list is printed out to show
an image+rating list for each subject. Notes are made for each
"weak"
subject, so I know who to focus on in the next day of shooting.
Note I may have needed to do some minor post processing to determine
rejects and rating.
Day 2: I shoot 9 subjects for customer A: a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,s, and 12
subjects for customer C: j,m,q,t,u,v,w,x,y,z,aa,bb. Similar culling,
sorting, and copying is done to Day 1.
Day N: CF card is full, so contents is written to a DVD, then card is
erased.
Day M: Sufficient counts of good images are obtained for Customer A, so
Final post processing is done, and prints are made.
My initial experimenting with Lightroom shows it has potential to streamline
the above work flow, but a few key hurdles have kept me from implementing
it. I have made some assumptions about the tool in the following description,
so the best help for me would first to point out what assumptions are incorrect
It looks like "import from device..." only allows a copy from the CF card.
A copy would mean once images were rejected in the catalog, it would be
out of sync. with the CF card. So "import photos from disk..." looks
to be the only way to accomplish principle 1 above. *[minor problem a]* I saw
no way to import the information from the CF cart recursively in this
mode. I had to choose the files in groups one directory (folder) at
a time. When I imported from device, I could grab the whole CF card,
even though it did a copy. Note another reason I can't copy the CF card
to the catalog is that the reject/delete operation would not free-up any
CF card space for the next shoot.
Rejecting, rating, and categorizing (with keywords) worked easily with
Lightroom, but *[minor problem b]* it appears the keyword shortcut list is
limited to 9 entries. Given customers can have more than 9 subjects,
it would be useful if this could be expanded, even if I implement some sort
of keyword hierarchy. I suspect the camera will complain about a bad file
format if I change any of the files on the CF card, but it looks like
the sidecar files on the computer disk allows me to "modify" images so
I can get a correct rating without actu

  • LR5 Import dialog does not list any images

    Lightroom 5 is not seeing that a folder of images I'm trying to import has any images in it. The folder is question has well over 5,000 jpegs (it's my iPhone image depository). While I was able to import images from this folder with no problem in LR4, LR5 is telling me that there are no images in the folder. I've double checked that all my import settings are normal and the same as LR4 and it doens't matter. No matter what I do, I cannot get LR5 to see that there are any images in this folder to import.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

    "If the folder already exists in the Folder panel, select it and Choose Library > Synchronize Folder."
    It doesn't exist in the Folder panel. It never has. It would mess up my workflow to have it as such. I only import from this folder.
    Try (via finder) moving a few of the images in the folder to another folder that has been cataloged. Then synchronize that folder to see if the images show.
    I did this and the images showed up fine, so there is nothing wrong with the image files.
    Instead of invoking the Import Dialog first, drag an image from th Camera Roll folder onto the Library module or the Lr icon. That will bring up the import dialog. see if you get the same results.
    Did this and it did not work.
    Why this is strange is that I have no problem importing from the same folder in Lightroom 4. Something has changed here in LR5.

  • I want to remove volumes from 'Import' - 'Select a source' list

    Hi all,
    First, I'm using the new Lightroom v4.1 on a Windows 7 x64 system.
    As the title to my question suggests, I'm trying (without success) to remove volumes from the list that's shown when a user clicks on the 'Import' button (lower left of screen) and 'Select a source' which, naturally, shows all the drives in my system.
    There are five volumes; four internal and one external.
    There are only two drives which contain photos that I'm interestered in importing/editing.
    The other drives contain files that I have no interest in editing or organizing.
    For example, several hundred (scanned and collected) very old family photos that I wish to keep pristine, with no editing of any kind. As for placing them in collections,  I already have them in dated, carefully named folders.
    So, as this is a shared computer, I want to remove the volumes (drives) so that the aforementioned photos can't be inadvertantly imported.
    Can someone please point me in the right direction how to do this?
    Thank you.
    Yours,
    Hugh

    There is nothing within Lightroom that will cause it to ignore a specific drive permanently. You'd have to go above Lightroom to the system level to prevent Lightroom from seeing the drive. Not sure how to do that, but it's probably possible.

  • Shared Services 11.1.1.3 - Problem importing Bus Rules from LCM Exports

    Hi,
    We have some Bus Rules in Calc Mgr that are named the same as the corresponding webform. For instance, a bus rule may be named '2.1.4 - Budget Load'. When we export all bus rules and then try and import them in to target (can be same server), they say they were successful, however none show up in Calc Mgr. After exhaustive testing, we took out the period (.) in the name and made it '2_1_4 - Budget Load' and it worked fine and migrates ok. My question is if anyone knows if this is a know issue bug or are periods not allowed like parens in Bus Rules names? It's weird as I swear this was working on a earlier version of Shared Services. We are upgraded to the latest patch on Shared Services too.
    Anyone have an older version of 11.1.1.3 Shared Services that they can test this on for me? Thinking Oracle may not have regression tested :)

    Straight from Oracle Support.... What a joke their regression testing is.....
    Thank you for your updates.
    I found the following Bug for 11.1.1.3. It is as follows :
    "Bug 8489999 - Filenames without ext, with artifact ids containing "." are not migrated. "
    According to the Development Team, it is validated with Drop 5 build 17.
    When discussing this issue with the Development Team earlier today, they wanted to check if this behaviour is noticed even when using 'admin' and Application Owner Account.

  • Problem importing .PSD to Fireworks and Exporting to .HTM with CSS

    Hi!
    Ok, I've watched 3 differerent adobe tutorial videos about opening a .PSD file in Fireworks and ultimately exporting from Fireworks to an HTML file with CSS for use in Dreamweaver.  It seems so easy.  I have a very simple PSD.  Basically a solid color header with two images on it plus some text which will eventually be a nav menu.  Then I have about 500 px of blank space underneath where I will eventually place a flash SWF.  Finally, I have a text footer made up of 6 individual text boxes that will also serve as nav links.
    When I export, the top portion looks fine, however my text boxes at the bottom end up all over the place and one even loses the "style" formatting.
    What am I doing wrong?  In the videos, it appears text simply stays text during the export and stays where it was on the page.  I don't know why mine is going everywhere.
    Any ideas would be so much appriciated...thx!!!

    I prefer to work in Photoshop.  I never use Fireworks.  But I know many people who prefer Fireworks.  So pick your favorite graphics editor and stick with it. PSD is not a Fireworks file type thus some things may get lost in translation particularly if they reside in layers on a CMYK project file.  Graphics for the web need to be saved as RGB.
    More importantly, graphics editors shouldn't be used to generate quality code.  Use your graphics editor to make your design comp, slice and optimize images (File > save for web).  Use DW to build your HTML & CSS code.   DW will do many things for you, but for best results you'll need a working knowledge of HTML and CSS otherwise you'll become very frustrated.

  • Problems exporting images from iPhoto

    Hi all,
    I have iphoto (ver. 6.0.6) on a MacBook running OSX 10.4.11. I have a WD external hard drive connected to an airport base station and due to a lack of space on my MacBook HDD, recently moved my iphoto library to the external hard drive. Since then I've had a few problems with the database becoming corrupted (probably my fault) and have rebuilt it a few times now. I've read a few posts explaining that image files should only be edited in iphoto and so I'm sticking to that now.
    The new problem that I have is in exporting images to a folder, say on the desktop for example. I want to upload some images to a website to have them printed off. Previously, when my photos were on my MacBook HDD, I created a folder on the desktop, highlighted the images I wanted and dragged them to the folder, then uploaded them to the website from the desktop folder- job done. Now, however, when I try to either drag them to the destop folder or export them, some of the files are 'converted' to Unix Executable files while the others are in their original jpeg format. I've tried exporting them and selecting the jpeg option instead of the original default option but no luck. Can anyone suggest where the problem might lie or what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Two problems with your set up.
    1. You getting a corrupted Library because iPhoto does not sit well with a wireless connection to the Library. If iPhoto is interrupted while writing to the database, then it becomes corrupted. Dropouts are a fact of life in Wireless networking. As long as you have this wireless connection you will have a significant risk of a damaged Library file.
    2. My guess is that the External Disk is formatted for Windows (a FAT format). This exe issue arises when jpegs are stored on a FAT formatted disk. You need to reformat the disk for Mac OS X Extended.

  • Workflow problem - keeping keywords while importing into Lightroom

    I am working tethered to a laptop, and need to put in keywords for each product I shoot. I do this in LIghtroom, and drag those images to an external drive. Then, I take the hard drive to my office desktop Powermac, and import these into my LIghtroom database on that computer. When I do so, I check "none" for metadata information to apply, and when my images import, the keywords are gone. What am I doing wrong? I spent hours entering all that data.
    Many thanks for any help or better workflow in general.
    Lynne

    The keywords are stores in the catalog, not in the picture - specially not in the raw file. LR never touches the raw files which is one of the main concepts of LR. Everything you do is stored in the catalog and/or in a sidecar xmp file, depending on your settings.
    Obviously, if you simply copy/move the raw files non of all your settings and keywords is coming along. You could copy/move the raw file and the xmp sidecar file - that will carry your settings. If you export, you export a picture with all your changes made to the picture and with keyword in the metadata. However, you can not export in any raw file format. If you need raw on the other machine you can as well look into dng: converting to dng upon import and exporting to dng. The dng file does not use an xmp sidecar file, it has all the metadata stored in itself.

  • Bug with Lightroom 4? - Big problem in the keyword list!!

    Hello guys,
    I am Rafael Rojas, a nature and landscape photographer. This is my first post, trigered by a quite bothering problem I am having with my LR...So hello everybody!
    I upgraded to LR 4 a week ago. Today I realized many of the keywords I have installed in Lightroom do not appear on the keyword list (basically all keywords after the letter S). Moreover, half of the keywords which appear on the list are not editable: that is, I cannot assign them to the selected image (by clicking on the left box), or I cannot double click them or right click them to get the Edit panel. All the rest of keywords (those which appear on the list on top), can be edited and there is no problem.
    When I export the keywords as a .txt file (in metadata, export keywords) I can see that all the keywords are there. When I try to write some of them on the box LR recognize them and adds them automatically. However, I just cannot see them on my keyword list or just cannot edit them.
    The reason I want to edit the keywords is because many of them got desactivated while upgrading (something more people have reported). Right now, I cannot send my images to my stock galleries, since many of my important keywords are not active, and I just cannot edit them...
    Can you help me please?
    thanks so much!!
    rafael

    Well, 64 bits.
    And yes, it seems when I erase one keyword, the list "shows" one more below...so it seems the problem is related to a certain limit in number.
    That would be still a problem I could live with, the big problem tough is that many of the keywords got "deactivated" alone by Lightroom (see problem here described http://www.backyardsilver.com/2012/02/strange-behavior-with-capitalized-keywords/) and that means I NEED to edit some keywords which are really important and which are not active. Otherwise, when I export the images those keywords are not embedded...
    Any thoughts?

  • Import selected business area from an exported EUL file

    Hi,
    Iam using Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.1) , Is there a way to import selected business Area from an Exported EUL file into the Discoverer.
    Thanks,
    Krishna

    Hi Krishna,
    We cannot import a specific business area from the exported file as the file is combo of all BA's in .eex format.
    Instead before exporting process,i.e when going through the export wizard you can select specific business area required and then import it.Hope this helps you.

  • Problem Importing Keywords with jpg photos into Library

    I am a new and enthusiastic LR user working to migrate from iMatch, where I have kept my ~80,000 photos organized for the last several years. However, my last roadblock to being able to do that is the import of keyword information (or as iMatch calls them, Categories). Obviously it's critical that these transfer across seemlessly as they represent untold number of hours in sorting and managing the database.
    The situation: Via an iMatch script I can successfully write the associated categories, including hierarchy, into an IPTC field of my choosing that is then included with the jpg file itself. I have done this into the "Keywords" field, with various combinations of special characters and/or spaces to denote hierarchy relationships or separate keywords.
    Upon LR import: LR recognizes the presence of the keywords and pulls them into the metadata, but refuses to see them as anything except part of one continuous hierarchy.
    Example: A picture in iMatch has two Categories associated with it, both of which are organized under a parent-->child hierarchy:
    Trips --> Switzerland2006 and Special --> Family --> Daughter
    When written via script into the IPTC Keyword field of the jpg file, it looks like this: Trips.Switzerland2006; Special.Family.Daughter
    (note -- I can make the semicolon separating the keywords anything, such as a comma, space, etc. I have tried all.)
    When imported into LR, it ends up looking like this under the left panel Keyword Tags area: Trips --> Switzerland2006; Special --> Family --> Daughter
    In the righthand panel under "Keyword Tags", I only see "Daughter" as this is at the bottom of the single stack hierarchy that was interpreted.
    In other words: I have found no possible way for LR to recognize that there is in fact MORE THAN ONE keyword coming in, rather than always a single hierarchy stack or very long words with spaces, semicolons, whatever included in between.
    I have tried every setting under Preferences-->File Handling, but those only give me options about when to tell LR to recognize a hierarchy step, not about what character to see as a separation between keywords themselves.
    Final note: If I first open one of my picture files in Adobe Bridge and look at the IPTC field Keyword there, it looks perfect. And if I go into that field and mess around a bit -- add a space, take away a space -- with in the end no change, then resave the file, THEN bring into LR, it works fine! I believe what is happening in this case is that Bridge is correctly interpreting the Keyword data from the file, but then is writing it into an XMP area that I can't see. LR must then read the XMP area in preference over the IPTC are upon import.... But -- if Bridge can read the original IPTC line correctly, why not Lightroom?!
    Bottom line question: What format or special character or special trick must be used for multiple keywords in the IPTC Keyword field so that Lightroom will correctly recognize the multiple keywords upon import?
    Thank you!
    JMC

    Do those keyword hierarchies show up properly in Vista Photo Gallery? I have the LR Edit/Preferences/File Handling configured to treat "/" (which is what Vista Photo Gallery uses) as a keyword separator and LR recognizes the hierarchical keywords.
    As I understand it, Vista reads both XMP and IIM/IPTC Headers, but will write only to XMP. I forced Photo Gallery to convert my keywords to XMP by adding a global keyword and then deleting it later. Then I used drag and drop to recreate the hierarchies. It works for me.

  • Problem deleting multiple keywords in lightroom 5

    I am importing about 20,000 pictures from Flickr. they are all creative commons, and the end result will be the use of approximately 4000 of these in an online sign language dictionary.
    I use Bulkr to import them and this process imports the tags as well as other information such as the photographers name and url.  Many of these photos arrive with hundreds of tags, so that the total number of tags might be 20000 or more.  I need to assign my own tags and delete all the tags that the photo arrived with.  I use the lightroom batch delete to do this (the little minus sign at the top of the keyword list).  i select a keyword, hold down the shift key and scroll down.  the problem is that i cannot just scroll down to the bottom of the list.  There appear to be unpredictable keywords that cause the shift-select process not to work.  if i scroll back up and then carefully scroll part of the way back down, then there will be a point at which shift-select stops working and above that it works.
    The end result of this is that it takes numerous shift-select-scroll down-select to delete everything so that what should take maybe 2 minutes takes 20 minutes or more.
    The problem may be related to foreign language keywords especially chinese characters, but even what looks like a perfectly ordinary keyword can stop it.  Two recent examples: travellers cheque  and Київ. In all cases, the words can be deleted when i click directly on them.  you just cant shift-select THROUGH them.
    A separate annoyance that i will just grumble about is that i was forced to put these pictures in a separate catalog because there is always the risk that i could manage to delete my own keywords while batch-deleting everyone elses, and there is no simple way that i know of to undo this. with the separate catalog at least i wont delete all the keywords for my own pictures.

    With respect to problems deleting multiple keywords: On Windows, since at least version 3, LR has had basic bugs when you have more than about 1600 keywords showing.  (Hard to believe it isn't fixed by now.)   A simple workaround for you situation is to filter the keywords one letter at a time and then select the subset of keywords that are showing -- e.g. filter all keywords with the letter "t", then all keywords with the letter "b", etc.
    With respect to not getting the keywords into your catalog in the first place: You can define a Metadata Preset that will clear the keywords on import:

  • Keyword Tags list Incomplete

    I've finally got round to importing my old scans into Lightroom. They all have comprehensive keywording. I don't use LR's hierarchical system, so all of my keywords are at the top level of the Keyword Tags list.
    But when I scroll through the list in the Keyword Tags pane on the LHS, it is truncated, only displaying the list as far as "Cesar". When I export the keywords as a .txt file, they're all there.
    Also, if I add new keywords by writing them in the Keyword Tags box on the RHS, it can take several minutes (yes, I do mean minutes, not seconds) of waiting before LR completes the action. I've tried Optimising the catalog, but it doesn't seem to make any difference, and 'backup' doesn't find any corruption in the catalog.
    Any Ideas? Or do I have to reorganise my keywords into a hierarchical structure?
    Patrick Cunningham

    Possman, Yes, I fully understand what you mean. I think if I were you I would want the same.
    In a hierarchical system as you have it is much easier to handle and remember)  a large number of keywords as many of them are implied ones (NH, NH7, NH76 eg). In a truly flat system (one without any structure at all) 10000 must be a nightmare.
    There are millions and millions of people taking pictures and there may be as much systems for keywording; everyone invents his or her own system. May be my background (ICT) forced me to think in a very structured and organized way. May be that's why I choose a hierarchical list from the beginning. I feel my keyword approach helped me in keeping the effort of tagging everything in LR  as small as possible. Although, let's be honest, on the road to success I have said some things I won't repeat here....
    I wonder if importing an existing tagging system would make one happy. It sounds attractive but a conversion/migration is sometimes even worse than starting from scratch: garbage in, garbage out. My brother in law tried to convert his system from old to new; it was a disaster. I took so much time that starting from scratch would have been wiser (and better for his marriage :-)).
    But I agree with you that LR should at least have an option to import what one has, no matter the number of keywords. From a commercial point of view that would be a very sound approach as well. Let the customer choose!
    However I still do not think one could demand from Adobe that LR should  be so open and so flexible that no matter which system will be imported  it will fit into LR without any problem. That is simply not possible I  am afraid. So there will always be disappointed users.
    But as Adobe is advertising LR as a DAM system their keywording solution should be more mature than it is right now.

    So the problem is?
    All you need to do is to create the JTable first of all (which you haven't done). Secondly, you create a TableModel for it so can manage its data effectively.
    Thirdly, you replace the code in your actionPerformed method to add a new row containing the data you received from the list and combo box.
    Now is that so hard? Okay, here is some code
    DefaultTableModel model = new DefaultTableModel(0,3);
    JTable table = new JTable(model);
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
        Object[] value = ingredient.getSelectedValues();
        if(e.getSource() instanceof JComboBox){
            for(int i=0;i < value.length;i++){
                String word = (String)value;
    Vector<Object> data = new Vector<Object>();
    data.addElement( box.getSelectedItem() );
    data.addElement( "of" + " " + word );
    data.addElement( box1.getSelectedItem());
    model.addRow( data );
