Workflow Question w.r.t. one large WMV file....

Hi.. (noob question)
I have a 1 hour WMV file that needs to be edited. I successfully import the video using the flip4mac qt plugin.
What is the work flow best practice for editing a file like this?
My first thought was to drag the complete file into the timeline and start chopping it up because I can take advantage of the graphical timeline (video and audio) and make my edits. But it comes in un-rendered.
My next thought is to render the whole thing but that will take time.
I am now thinking that I can bring it into the viewer window and then make multiple IN/OUT points and then bring them into the canvas/timeline, but again, they are un-rendered.
Also, It would be good to be able to graphically see the viewer video/audio timeline like I do the canvas... how do I do that?
Can you point me to the proper place in the doc or within this forum or just your own experience?
TIA
-Steven

Well I was just adding onto Jim's response...
But if we take it back to the beginning - you'll likely need to transcode your original WMV to something that is more "FCP friendly". Something like DV, DVCPRO50, ProRes, whatever is best for your needs. You'll need to make that decision.
To get there: you could open the original WMV in QT, or Compressor and transcode it. Be sure to change the audio to 48K. Drop this newly created movie into FCP and edit away. Then when you're done, if you need to create another WMV, I'd spit out a self-contained QT movie with the same settings as your sequence. Then drop this final output back into Compressor to make the deliverable WMV.
My original point was simply that the "full" version of flip4mac makes the WMV export settings available inside Compressor.

  • Trying to split one large audio file into tracks

    Hi;
Awhile ago I mistakenly imported a CD into iTunes, as one large audio file, containing all 10 tracks. Now I'd like to know how to split this file back into it's separate tracks, and re-import into iTunes.
    Any thoughts?
    TIA.

MP3 editor is a lossless editor for MP3 files.
-> Fission, will do lossles editing of AIFF, WAV, MP3, AAc and Apple Lossless.
You can do it yourself but the songs will be re-encoded (not lossless) but may not be a big deal.
On the song, right click - get info. Click the Options tab and set the Start-Stop times for the first song.
Then select the song, menu Advanced - Create AAC version {or whatever is selected in iTunes prefs -General - Importing}.
This will create a new copy of the song between the time markers. Select the new song, righ click - get info and update the song title.
Then on the original song, set Start-Stop times for the second song and menu Advanced - Create AAC version the for the 2nd song.
Do this for all the songs in the original file.

  • Importing a large wmv file.

I am trying to import a large wmv file (1hr 6min) into premiere pro cs6 so that I can blur some faces, it is a traffic stop, but the file will not import.  I have done this before several times but the largest file was 16 min.  Is this file too big to import?  Because of legal reasons it cannot be edited in any way except to blur the faces.  I was going to divide it into smaller files to import but was told it had to be intact.

The duration should not make any difference.
What is the error message you get or what happens when to try and import it?
Have you tried another wmv file as a test?

  • Help - large WMV files into FCE4

I'm a relative newbie to FCE and have just used it to work with short videos from my AVCHD camcorder.
Recently, I sent a bunch of Hi-8 video tapes to an online conversion service, and they were returned to me as a series of 3GB (2 hour) WMV files. What format do I need to convert these into to be able to edit everything down to a single DVD's worth?
I thought using Prism to convert the WMV to MOV would work, but when I try to import (or drop) a MOV file (also 3GB) into FCE, I get a very long spinning beach ball. Should I have used another format or codec?
Or, should I work with smaller files? Is there any easy way to split up the MOV or WMV files into smaller chunks?
I was hoping to finish this project by Christmas, but I can't even get to a decent starting point!
    Thanks for any guidance.
    John S

    Thanks!
It's the first time I've used a conversion service, so I didn't even think to try to specify the output format.
That may be the best approach; otherwise I'll go with the QT DV suggestion. The quality is pretty poor to begin with, since these are from a 1990-era camcorder.
    Thanks again!

  • Which method to use to separate out invoices from one large xml file

I will generate one massive invoice file , say , containgoin aout 200 invoices.
However, I would like them to be produced as separate .pdf files instead of a singular pdf
Th eintention is to take each pdf and email it out to customers.
    Is there another approach?

    Thank you Dominic,
I found the chapter on bursting in another User Guide .
But since I have not worked with java ( classes), I am not sure where to place the separate code units.
From user guide I understand that the following need to be done:-
    1. Write up a control file
    2. Write up another little class , which will use DocumenTProcessor class and registerListener method.
    example
    public BurstingTest()
    try
    DocumentProcessor dp = new DocumentProcessor
    ("\burst\burstCtrl.xml", "\\burst\\empData.xml","\\burst");
    dp.registerListener(this);
    dp.process();
    catch (Exception e)
    { System.out.println(e);
Where should this new code be placed on the server ? Will it be JAVA_TOP ?
Will the bursting be a stand-alone process , called from the server ? And how to call it ?

  • Trying to Batch-Export Several .dv clips from one large .dv file

I'm having trouble cutting up and exporting discrete clips from larger .dv files; either it doesn't cut in the right place (weird parts of the file get glommed together), loses its audio, compresses and loses information, etc.
I'd really like to be able to cut up each file into specific clips and export them all at once (the files are roughly 13GB each), but so far everything I've tried has led to disaster, and all of the exported files are converted to .mov

    S00thsayer,
The bottom line here is that if your .dv files are in FCP they are no longer . dv files.
I know that may sound heretical so some, but stay with me for a second.
Final cut will simply not edit .dv in its native state any more than it will AVCHD. What happens instead is that FCP IGNORES the audio portion of the DV stream and rewrites its own audio (32 bit float mind you, which is not the most efficient use of disc space)
Now you have a DV NTSC sequence but as far as FCP is concerned that means a .MOV shell containing video + audio. THAT is now the native state. The video has not been re-compressed yet but is still no longer experiencing life as a .dv file.
That's the first reality that you need to accept.
Next, if you do decide to export from FCP to the .dv codec I'm pretty certain that at THAT point you'll be re-compressing your video footage. So, Ironically, in an attempt to avoid generational loss by insisting that the new clips be ".dv" you actually could be making things worse.
The ONLY application in the universe that I'm aware of that will do what you're trying to do is iMovieHD 06. That application had destructive style file functionality that let you trash media that had been trimmed while still maintaining the original file directory.
Personally, I think it's incumbent upon you to inform "your boss" that his abstract idea about maintaining this media within FCP as .dv is simply fantasy.
Or continue to tell the emperor that his new clothes are beautiful !
    good luck,

  • HDV just one large mpeg file after capture?

    Hi,
i have captured one hour HD Video from a HDV tape into PE8. But then the cature is done it gets only one laaaaarge file.
Why doens't the scene dectection works? I have tried to do Auto analyze afterwords but it doesn't work either.
One more question. I have a small Canon Ixus 100 IS that recrods in .mov format. How do i import .mov into PE8?
I must install Quicktime? But if i don't want to?

    Hi,
i am using P8E to make the capture and i use the predefined HDV settnings in PE8 (1080i 25 frames /sec).
The camera is a Sony HDR HC3 (HDV cam).
Then i do the capture it results in a large single MPEG-file (the format PE8 use), So i guess the fileformat is correct.
My question was why the scene detection doesn't work? =)

  • One large photo file?

I think I read this somewhere that iphoto8 now puts all the photos into one file rather than into finder folders. Is this correct? as it makes backup a bear. I hope not.

FYI: LaCie's free backup application, SilverKeeper, also sees the iPhoto library as a folder and can do incremental backups.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I would like to make one event file and add several realted event files in this one event file without putting all photos together.  Can this be done?

Files and events ahve nothing to do with each other
If you are looking for "sub-events" that is not a feature of iPhoto
you can use albums and folders - albums hold photos and folders hold albums or other folders
If thsi does not answer your queation please ask it again - it is not clear

  • How would you do this?  CD tracks from one large audio file

I just recorded in a live concert into Soundtrack Pro. The file was recorded at 16bit & 44.1KHz. I want to make a CD of this without any gaps. I am curious how to put in markers/CD tracks so that I can jump to each song.
Anyone know of a way to do this without breaking all the audio up into individual files?
    Thanks!
    Gary

Afaik, there's no way to do it in STP without doing independent audio files for each track. In theory, you could create an audio file for each track, don't have any space between each track and burn your CD DAO (Disk-At-Once) and everything should be fine. However, I'd rather have one long file and just put markers where you want the track indexes. If you have Waveburner, you can do this with it. If you don't, Peak can do this as well but my new favorite software for that job is Wave Editor:

    At 79$, it's a no-brainer deal!

  • Multiple property files, or one large one

I am just starting internationalization on a Java application, and am externalizing my Strings into property files. My question is: what is better, to store all the Strings in one large property file (making it easier to edit, and reduce duplicates) or to have a property file for each GUI Widow/Dialog etc. My concern with one large file is that there may be a performance hit?

The java internalization tutorial tells you some of the advantages of using several resource bundles instead of one:

  • How to split large video files into multiple individual clips by date

Hello. I'm looking for a freeware/shareware program (if one exists, or willing to pay for one if it does this well) that will:
    1) Analyze a large AVI file identifying the start/start points of each segment of video and the dates the video segments were shot.
    2) Then allow me to organize (for example, join 2 or more segments together if it's a video with a lot of start/stop points during the same shot) the segments identified in step 1 into logical clips that could be split apart from the 1 large AVI file.
    3) Lastly, it would split my one large AVI file into the multiple clips or files that I identified in step 2.
A piece of software called FootTrack does a great job analyzing AVI files as I describe in steps 1 & 2, but it doesn't allow you to split or export the one avi file into multiple avi files.
I really don't want to have to do this one clip at a time, I've got to believe there's a program out there that will automate this process for me.
    Thanks

I don't know of a way to automate it. I just did about 15 years worth. It wasn't too hard. I use an application called mpegstreamclip. Its very easy and free to download either from the apple site or direct from its site.

Bascically you set the in and out points with the i and o keys and export.

  • Can't Import large .avi file from digital camera into iPhoto 08

I have a digital camera with a 4GB SD card. I was shooting video and have several small .avi files on the card and one large .avi file (2.67 GB) on the same card. I did not have a problem importing the small files. iPhoto hung while trying to import the large file. I read in this forum that I should use Image Capture, which I tried. When I used Image Capture on the smaller files (just to see how it worked), my camera would flash while it was transferring. When I tried Image Capture on the large file, the camera did not flash and after about 20 minutes, there didn't seem to be anything going on with the transfer. I also tried an old card reader through Image Capture, and that didn't work either. Should Image Capture be able to handle this size file? Do you know of any way to break up the large file into smaller files on the SD card? What am I missing? Thanks!

Canon's cameras do not mount on the Desktop. It's a 'feature' of the brand.
There are several possibilities for Image Capture - including minor directory damage on the card etc. The only solution is get the card to mount, and that means a recent Card Reader.

  • Making Windows Media Player my default player for WMV files

I installed Flip4Mac and set it as my default player for WMV files. Now when I open large WMV files, I have to wait 10-20 seconds for them to load. I want to go back to Windows Media Player as the default player for all my WMV files - how do I do that? Thanks in advance!

Single click on a .wmv file and open the Get Info window.
Change the "Open with:" app and then click the "Change All..." button.

  • Why won't a VERY LARGE QUICKTIME file play on my powerbook?

i have a large .mov file on disk (in the vicinity of 3 GB) that appears to be non-functional.
after inserting the data dvd into my computer, my powerbook will recognize the file as a quicktime file but it won't play.
    this is what happens:
    (1) it is not able to calculate its size
    (2) when i double-click the file, QUICKTIME PRO opens but the following error message appears: "the movie could not be opened. the file is not a movie file."
i ran the disk over to a friend's macbook pro, and experienced the same problems, so i'm thinking that it's not my powerbook, but i have a hard time accepting that the problem is with the disk since it was generated by a professional service who created three data disks for me in all, of which one of them works (it's a disk where all of the .mov files are under 1.6 gb) while the other two disks (each of which contain files that are larger than 1.6 gb) do not work.
does anyone know what could be causing this problem? any ideas of how i can resolve this?
is it possible that powerbooks and macbook pros are not powerful enough to handle this kind of file?
any help would be greatly appreciated. btw, i'm using the most recent version of QUICKTIME PRO and i've recently updated my codec library, so i should have that covered (plus, none of the error messages mention anything about missing codecs).
    thanks again.

thanks for responding. that's good to know that a 3+ GB file works on your machine, but this particular problem is not yet solved.
we can now say that it may not be the file size.
when i open the disk on a macbook pro and let it sit there for 25 minutes or so, the computer is still not able to estimate the file size but it does recognize the file as a QuickTime file.
when i attempt to drag the file onto the desktop, the following COPY error message comes up: "SORRY, THE OPERATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED BECAUSE AN UNEXPECTED ERROR OCCURED (CODE -50)."
as i mentioned earlier, the other disk that was generated during this session works fine (however, that particular disk contained several smaller QuickTime files while the problem disc contains only ONE LARGE QuickTime file).
thanks very much to anyone who can provide me with some help.
