Workgroup manager without OSX server

A little trick picked up at an IT conference....
Im using Workgroup manager on client machine to get a high level of control on local user accounts.
Does anyone know of a way the get WGM control of AD authenicated users on the same local machine?

Hi
If I understand your post correctly then yes - up to a point. Installing Server Admin tools (WGM and SA) on a client is a good way of defining MCX for users and groups that exist on the AD. Bind the client to the AD using the Active Directory plug-in in Directory Utility (/Applications/Utilities), join client to an OD Master (if you are also looking for this functionality) using the LDAPv3 plugin using the same application and you should now see all users and groups as they exist on the AD. Select the Preferences option in the Workgroup Manager menu and enable the 'Show all tabs and inspector' option. You should now see a new icon appear by the side of the computer lists icon - looks like a bullseye. Select this, select users from the pop up menu and you can now inspect all the schema attributes and values for users and groups that exist on the AD.
You can create a group in the OD node and drag users and/or groups that exist in the AD node into that group, define managed preferences from there. On the client side you join the AD first and the OD second and make sure they are in that order in the Authentication and Contacts tabs. De-select the authentication option in the LDAPv3 plugin. Now clients will authenticate using their AD credentials, pick up their home folders as defined on the AD and have OD managed preferences be applied to them. All the principals in this environment participate in SSO.
You can - if you wish - edit some of the unassigned attributes with values of your own to give you extra functionality. Its not a good idea to edit existing attributes and values. Besides I don't think the AD will allow it, you'll get a dsnoderroplugin error message. If you want to edit AD attributes and values you'll have to do it on the AD itself using the relevant schema modification tool.

  • Does workgroup manager and OSX have problems?

I am a classroom teacher using Adobe CS2 on 24 IMac G5's and 3 IMac G5's with the intel processor. I have had problems with Photoshop and Illustrator saving empty files and files disappearing. So my Tech people want to redo the server.
They tell me that I can have only one group of users, because more groups causes many problems. At the present time I have four groups set up according to the different classes I teach. The groups are Desktop Publishing, Digital Photography, IWP Students and Night school. Each group has different programs and template files that they need for assignments.
I have been told this using of two or more groups is what's causing saving problems with Adobe CS2 programs.
They want to make one group for all students and I don't see why if workgroup manager sets preferences for each group (about 75 students in each group) that 2 or 4 groups is all that many. Right now each student is assigned to a group and only sees programs or files that are used in that group.
If this new an improved setup is done then all students see everything and have access to all programs for all classes instead of just the group assigned to the class they are in.
Am I missing something or isn't the server and workgroup manager supposed to be able to set up different groups so you can limit access.
I want to limit access but the tech people want something easy and less limited. Are they right that the saving problems of Adobe CS2 programs is due to too many groups(4 total) with different preferences? Does Workgroup manager have problems with this type of setup? Are the Tech people just taking the easy way out to save on the new setup? Is my theory of limiting access wrong?
I am from the days of At Ease with panels. I never had problems no file sharing no extra files or programs to use.
Any opinions on the server setup with Workgroup Manager?

Sorry I placed this in the wrong OS area and I don't know how to move it to the correct OS area. Can anyone help with that?

  • Portable Home Directory WITH a Windows Server/AD and WITHOUT OSX Server/OD

    Hi All,
I'm pushing the envelope here a bit, but here's the situation:
    - Windows 2003 AD Servers
    - Windows 2003 Home Directory File Server
    - MacOS X 10.5.2 client (on an Intel iMac)
Everything works fine (once you add the AD server's IP/domain name into /etc/hosts and remove the dashes from the name of the client you're trying to join anyway). I can login, logout, run all the Apps I need. Get fine throughput from the server.
The problem comes when I try to turn on Portable Home Directories (Mobile Accounts) for users of the client. I believe the client is trying to use "Server Side File Tracking for Mobile Home Sync", and so is trying to SSH into the Windows machine. This, perhaps unsurprisingly, is not working.
Is there any way to turn this off without using Open Directory (even there it seems to be part of Server Admin General Prefs and not Managed Preferences)?

Portable Homes work just fine with non-Apple servers. It just that you will not get the performance improvements of 10.5 server's "Server Side File Tracking for Mobile Home Sync".
If Portable Homes are not working for you file a bug with Apple.

  • Question re: "Homepage:" field on the Info tab of Workgroup Manager

I have about 200 users on an Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.6. I have written a php script that queries the ldap server to display an addressbook page of sorts on our internal intranet. I noticed that there was a "Homepage:" field available on the Info tab in Workgroup Manager when entering user information and since I was not using that field I decided to use it for the webcal location of my user's calendars so I could add that link to my addressbook page. I did not realize that as I was pasting the links in the Workgroup Manager decided to add a "/user_name" to the end each of them breaking my links.
I'm curious what the "Homepage:" ldap entry is used for and why the link I paste in there gets changed?
Also, if I select the text in that field and delete it after clicking Save the /user_name entry comes back (without the rest of the URL I had pasted there). The only way I have found to remove the entry completely is to click on the Inspector tab and remove the "URL" attribute. Am I likely to mess anything up now by removing that URL attribute or am I better off just leaving it there (so far I have tested with one user and everything seems ok so perhaps there is nothing to worry about here).
    Thanks in advance.

When I was attended a seminar at Macworld '07, the gentlemen demonstrating the various server tools used Workgroup Manager without a server, and made a point of telling us we could use it without a server. However, they neglected to mention if there was a way to duplicate the settings to other machines without them accessing OS X Server. I suppose I will have to do this manually at each machine, but at least I can still do it!

  • I'm currently having issues with workgroup  manager on 10.6 OS X Server

Some of the preferences managed on the server are not getting pushed out to client machines. When dock settings are set and managed as always, only some are being pushed through to 10.6.8 and some 10.7 clients. I have checked the version of workgroup manager on both server and client to make sure that they are the same. Is there a way that workgroup manager can be reinstalled on the server?. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I enabled all users in my AD "Domain Users" group access to "Profile Manager". I had also initially enabled "Profile Manager" access for a few individual users. Those users did not loss the device assignments. I'm not absolutely sure why/if allowing access for a group is causing this issue. Enabling access for each person would be very time consuming.... Maybe adding access to the individual users is importing that user into OD?

  • Can not locate Workgroup Manager; possibly not installed?

    Here's the story:
I'm trying to get my new camera software installed and one of the steps is to launch Image capture.
Image capture gives me an error saying: "No Image Capture Device connected."
Apple says to fix this I need to open Workgroup Manager (in /Applications/Server/) and change some preferences.
But, I can not find Workgroup Manager for the life of me. I used spotlight with no luck. I also don't have a folder in Applications titled Server. This worries me and makes me wonder if the program could have been deleted or not installed at all?
Any suggestions on how to find WgM would be welcome.

Whoa... somebody got confused someplace... I wouldn't guess you are running OSX Server on a MacBook, but the oSX CXlient instead, so no idea how Apple came up wih that solution.
You likely should not have a Server folder there, nor the APP they speak of.
What kind of Camera exactly, and how does it connect?

  • Workgroup Manager Quits!

When I open workgroup manager and open my local account info, and click on the "New User" button. Or, If I click on a already made user, and click on the "Home" tab, workgroup manager quits without any message (when having the server give back the 'unexpectedly quits' message it says thread 0 crashed) Everything works fine with the open directory accounts. Yes, I have tried reinstalling the admin tools. Any ideas??

Your posts didn't indicate whether you were running Workgroup Manager from the server or from a workstation (or both). I would be curious if it quits out in the same way when run on more than one machine. If so, this would indicate a problem on the server side, and not with the management application.
If it's on the server side, I would experiment with whether the problem occurred only with NetInfo (you mentioned you had problems there), or if you also saw similar issues when making changes to your LDAP entries, if you're using Open Directory.

  • Unable to authenticate with diradmin in Workgroup Manager

This has happened before, and I have no idea how it got fixed - too many independent variables...
Anyway, I cannot authenticate the OD with diradmin even while using Workgroup Manager directly on the server.
    The setup:
    SLS 10.6.8
    Split-brained DNS
Both public and private FQDNs are the same (myserver.mydomain.com). External DNS maps machine record to my static public IP address. Using an AirPort Extreme router, port fowarding services that I want open to the server. The router provides DHCP via NAT to the local network, with a fixed private IP assigned to the server. The server is running DNS with the same zones, machine records, services and aliases that the public IP DNS has, except mapped to the fixed private IP. DNS checks out with changeip, etc.
The server is an OD master. Yesterday I exported it, demoted it, and restored it. All services (mail, web, etc.) seem to work fine (although I admit to not using Kerberos on AFP due to another issue).
I have a wildcard certificate that is generated by GoDaddy (*.<mydomain>.com) which seems to work fine with the hosted websites.
This is what the password service error log says when I try to log in with diradmin in Workgroup Manager:
    Jan 10 2012 14:01:32    AUTH2: {0x4bbe71ca6b8b45670000000200000002, diradmin} DHX authentication succeeded.
    Jan 10 2012 14:01:32    KERBEROS-LOGIN-CHECK: user {0x4bbe71ca6b8b45670000000200000002, diradmin} is in good standing.
    Jan 10 2012 14:01:32    KERBEROS-LOGIN-CHECK: user {0x4bbe71ca6b8b45670000000200000002, diradmin} authentication succeeded.
Looks good to me. But I still get the "Information Not Valid for This Server" followed by stuff about invalid login ID or password.
I did notice in the LDAP log:
Jan 10 14:13:12 <myserver> slapd[52283]: SASL [conn=18] Failure: GSSAPI Error: Unspecified GSS failure.  Minor code may provide more information (Key table entry not found)
And at the last bootup in the directory service error log:
    2012-01-10 08:52:03 EST - T[0x00007FFF7027ACC0] - DNSServiceProcessResult returned -65563
The other thing I notice when I log into the library in Workgroup Manager FROM THE SERVER, even if I use the FQDN <myserver>.<mydomain>.com that Workgroup Manager says (in the title bar of the window) <myserver>.local.
I have googled the various errors and messages, and I get folks with all sorts of variations ("change the binding options", etc.) none of which either applied or worked.
    Help?

Continuing on my quest... I found this Technical note from Apple about re-kerberizing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3655
Interestingly, in step 3 where it says to remove realm information from kdc.conf, there wasn't any of my realm information. Argh!
So I completed all of the steps and executed the slapconfig command. This resulted in:
    bash-3.2# slapconfig -kerberize -f --allow_local_realm diradmin <MYREALM>
    diradmin's Password:
    Could not resolve hostname <MYDOMAIN>
    Skipping Kerberos configuration
Sounds like a dreaded DNS problem. It had been working correctly, but changeip -checkhostname confirmed a problem. Turns out that there were EXTERNAL DNS servers in the Network preferences in System Preferences as well as on the router. With my Split-brained DNS this caused problems (thank you again MrHoffman). So I changed them both to my DNS server INTERNAL IP address and added the external ones to the Forwarder IP Address in DNS. Now checkhostname -changeip returns a favorable result.
So after rebooting ran the slapconfig command again and got the same result. Argh. Cleared DNS caches. Still nothing.
    So I tried nslookup.
    nslookup <mydomain>
    Server:                    10.0.8.2
    Address:          10.0.8.2#53
    ** server can't find <mydomain>: SERVFAIL
Where 10.0.8.2 is the fixed INTERNAL IP address.
However, nslookup on using the fixed IP address yields:
    bash-3.2# nslookup 10.0.8.2
    Server:                    10.0.8.2
    Address:          10.0.8.2#53
    2.8.0.10.in-addr.arpa          name = <mydomain>.
Scratching head here... changeip -checkhostname works, nslookup on the IP address works, but nslookup on the host name fails.

  • Nested AD User Groups in Workgroup Manager not working in Mavericks

The setup is the traditional Golden Triangle, so Active Directory for users and groups, Open Directory for Managed Preferences. Both Apple clients and server are running 10.9.0
While I can successfully manage the Mac's via OD computer groups, the OD user groups with nested AD groups no longer appear to work. If I nest an AD user it works fine, but not the AD users group.
This is a new AD and new OD, no migrations. This is a setup I've done countless times over the years, but since Mavericks has been introduced, I can no longer make this work.
Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
    Thanks,
    Alex Price

    Hello
I have been having the same problem, when adding an AD Group to an OD group the users in the AD group are not managed, but if i add the user to the OD group it works fine, (with about 5000 active users this is not an option) this has been a problem with 10.9 and has not been fixed with 10.9.1, i assume we need a update to Workgroup manager?
Maverick server is useless at the moment, cant upgrade the clients to Maverick if i cant manage them, are Apple just tring to make my job more difficult than it needs to be, i was happy that they provided Workgroup Manager for Mavericks because Profile Manager is simple not an option, but it would be good if it worked properly, its not a small problem so you would think apple would make it a priority.

  • Workgroup manager crashes

    Grretings,
Out of the blue, our workgroup manager stays open for only a minute or so. This can be shortened by clicking on a user name then selecting the "home" tab or better yet, selecting the "new" button.
This occurs even when accessing the server via a remote instance of the workgroup manager.
Any insight or guidance to resolving this would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Antonio,
ServerAdmin proggie works fine. I have attempted to use the loopback address when accessing WorkgroupManager. Now I can average 30-60 seconds of navigation in the utility before it closes out. However, I am unable to modify any user settings during this brief time.
I will attempt removing the .plist file and rebooting after hours and report back the results.
I've included the output of the last attempt from the crash reporter:

  • 10.6.8 Server - workgroup manager not authenticated

I have 10.6.8 Server that has suddenly stopped accepting the dradmin password when using Workgroup Manager.  Workgroup Manager connects, but in not authenticated mode.  When I click the lock icon and am prompted for the ID & Password it is rejected.  I know with 100% certainty I am using the correct administrator ID and password.  I am running Workgroup Manager directly on the server computer.  I'm able to log on to the computer as the local administrator. Server Admin works fine with no authentication issues.
I have not applied the 10.6.8 Supplemental update, but wonder if that might be helpful.
It is very concerning to be locked out of my own server. Any suggestions why this is happening and how to reslove it?
    Thank you,
    -Joe

The logs revealed that dradmin was actually authenticating successfully, but for some reason Workgroup Manager was still in unauthenticated mode.  I installed 10.6.8 Supplemental update and found no improvement.
All users have portable home directories and everything with Open Directory was functioning properly.  DNS and Kerberos were confirmed to be working properly.  Several restarts and shutdown/startups were performed and I never was able to get Workgroup Manager to authenticate.  So after a few hours troubleshooting last weekend I decided to restore the server to a disk image that was created 20 days earlier.  I elected to do this this because I needed to get it resolved on the weekend to minimize the chance of downtime during business hours.  The only thing on the boot drive is the server OS an everything else is stored on an external RAID so it was fairly simple for me to restore then get everything current again.
I kept an image of the server with the problem so I can restore it to a standby server to experiment with any possible fixes that I may come across in the future.  As of now I don't know why it happened nor how to fix it without restoring.

  • Server Admin and Workgroup Manager is sloooow

When running Server Admin or Workgroup Manager directly from my client macbook, connected to one of our leopard servers, it is painfully slow. I mean painfully.
It takes a minute to connect while I stare at this spinning wheel, some actions never stop spinning the wheel. Sometimes it just stops and everything is working great.
If I run the admin tools locally, connected through remote desktop its working much better, but can still be quite slow when connecting sometimes.
    Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with a new xserve, setup with the factory pre-install leopard 10.5.2 it defaults to the server FQDN (myservername.com) for server admin with no DNS setup it takes ages to finaly get SA to open because it can't resolve itself.
deleting server.myservername.com once SA fianaly responds it reverts to server.local and responds
once DNS is configured correctly, no more issues.
this particular server went on to develope regular OD crashes and AFP problems with OD crashing and when users logged in/out nd AFP having to be restarted when OD crashed and I decided to rebuild it.
the DVD was 10.5.1, on bootup it was far worse than the factory pre-install when opening SA
I upgraded to 10.5.2 combo before turning on any services , even when I got DNS working it was slow to respond nothing like as bad as without DNS but still slow. DNS checked out fine. The only way I could get it to respond normally was to add the domain name to Search domains in network preferences.
something I did notice with the DVD install in server setup the local address defaulted to .private SA expects .local and the server name wasn't automatically filled out when I entered the server FQDN. the factory pre-install automaticly filled out the server name and used .local
there is an edit button near the server name once you click on that it changes the name from .private to .local
I didn't notice the .private the 1st time around and with the .private things where far worse. SA wouldn't respond at all even with 127.0.0.1

  • How do I install Mavericks without invoking the OSX Server Plugin?

How do I perfrom a clean install of Mavericks from the Recovery Partition without it automatically installing, and then invoking or executing the OSX Server Plugin that ultimately results in rendering open directory operable as well as the server.  I have ignored this continously, but the other day I went into the terminal and typed ARP -s that lists the shortname for the host of my MacBook Pro and it gave a totally different name than what I had given it in the wi-fi network interface under the WINS tab. More importantly, I do not want to install open directory nor the osx server plugin as it opens up more complexity than I want to deal with.  Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.  BTW, below are the steps I performed for installing Mavericks.
    1. Powered on the MacBook Pro and then hit the Option key.
    2. This took me into the Recovery Partition, whereby I went into the Disk Util and erased or formatted the hard-drive.
    3. I then clicked out of the Disk Utility and went into the Recovery Mode by clicking on reinstall the current OS.
    4. I went through all the prompts and the system downloaded a current version of Mavericks.
    5. After completion, I turned on my Macbook Pro and went through the prompts to install Mavericks.
    6. This is all I did, and I didn't download the OSX plugin nor invoke it in the new version of the Operating System.
I just assumed that it was a standalone version until I found the server for osx running with open directory invoked, the server invoked, along
with other components relative to a new standalone version.
Again, my question is simple: How can I reinstall Mavericks without it downloading and automatically
iinvoking the components as described above?

Hi. Because both Mavericks and Windows 8 are still new, they may not be free of error. Apple needs more time to perform more tests to ensure that these two different OS's will work properly without getting in conflicts. If it's posdible, I highly recommand you to downgrade back to Lion or Mountain Lion and install Windows 7 (if you have a copy of it). In my experience, all advises from Genius Bar members and computer articles confirm that  Windows 7 will work on Macs with Lion OS. It should also work on Mountain Lion. Besides Boot Camp, you could try to virtualize Windows OS and its applications by using VirtualBox, CrossOver and other VMs. I already have an Oracle VirtualBox but I would like to try Boot Camp since it allows me to enjoy almost all Windows features that may be limited in VMs.

  • Managing a remote unix box with OSX server apps...

Aside from running an OSX server, I am in charge of maintaining an external, SUN unix server from my Mac, and I hate using line commands, esp. with how jaded I've become using the nice tools for managing the Mac server. For now I use terminal in order to change passwords, set permissions and so on as the sudo user on the unix box, and use rbrowser to edit cron jobs.
So, my question is, is there a way to get the OSX server admin tool to think the unix box is an OSX server? And if not, is there a graphical interface to maintain the server (it's running Apache too)? Rbrowser is cool and all, but doesn't let me use sudo for making chnages.
    Thanks for any help.
    Greg

Bummer about not having the Mac feel on SUN. Life can't always be perfect.
As far as the Webmin, no, haven't heard of it, but it sounds cool. The trick would be getting a huge client like SD County to let us buy it, then go through all the hoops and red tape to get it installed. Most likely their answer would be "Well, what have you been using this whole time and why isn't that good enough now all of a sudden?".
So for the time being, I'l have to be happy using RBrowser for file transfers between the test and production servers (beats the pants off of typing scp -p -i over and over again) and editing cron scripts. Too bad it doesn't provide sudo for changing passwords, groups, and so forth.
I'm this close to having the perfect work environment (the office I work in was all Windows with Dell laptops...until now).
