Workgroup setting won't stay after system reboot

Even though this issue was reported in 10.7, the issue still remains in 10.8.
Background:
I have a home network consisting of a iMac (2011) and two Windows 7 PCS connected to a Netgear Gigabit switch. I on occasion transfer files to and from my Mac and my Windows PCs.
Pre OSX Lion, This situation worked fine. But since Lion and now Mountain Lion I am no longer able to copy files to my Mac from my Windows Pcs. Copying files from my Mac to my Windows Pcs work fine. In troubleshooting this issue, I found out in the Network system preference option after selecting ethernet and then the advanced button, then clicking on the Wins tab, that the Netbois and Workgroup fields are blank. After providing a Netbois name and the workgroup name the same as the Windows Pcs, then selecting the OK button generally works. Sometimes I have to go in multiple times before it takes the information but once it does everything works as it suppose until I reboot or shutdown and startup. If I do either when I go back into the Network in the System Preferences the fields are blank again.
I've followed some of the suggestions from the other support documents but they did not work for me:
1. Deleting the com.apple.systemperference.plist file and .lockfile
2. Create a duplicate ethernet service add the necessary changes then make that ethernet service the active one after disabling the original one.
None of these worked. I submitted on Apple Feedback this issue when I was still running OSX 10.7.2 but it never was fixed and now Mountain Lion behaves the same way. I will be submitting once again in hopes someone at Apple pays attention.
It seems this issue has to do with the Apple inhouse developed SMB share implementation. When they was using the SAMBA software I had no issues.
I even did a clean install of Mountain Lion to make sure the problem would not be transferred from Lion. Didn't make a difference.
Any help would be appreciated.

That work around is great. A lot easier that typing in the info repeated before it takes just to have to do it again after the next reboot. If anyone has access to the Apple Bug Reporter, please add this bug for all of our sakes.
Two things.
1. After the initial ML install, the word workgroup was in the workgroup field. And that did not disappear after each reboot. Only when changing it to something else is when the problem manifests.
2. I wonder if the Macbook Air and The new Retina Macbook Pro has this same issue being that they too come with SSD styled storage. If anyone have these macs please reply with your findings.

You shouldn't need Command + R since the Option key will present you with the Recovery boot volume. Seems something is amiss there, I'm willing to bet you may have been using a wireless keyboard.

"Use iCloud" setting won't stay on for Pages

I am experiencing the same problem on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4s. I am attempting to utilize Pages with iCloud. iCloud is functioning fine; calendar events are syncing across all events, backups are being made, etc.
However, I can turn "Use iCloud" on within Settings > Pages on BOTH devices. The option stays on, until I open Pages on that device. Then, it automatically reverts to off, whether I create or edit a document within Pages or not. I've tried every combination imaginable of killing both apps, enabling "Use iCloud," restarting device before launching Pages, etc. But the problem persists on both devices. Needless to say, nothing is syncing. I have "Documents & Data" on within iCloud settings.
Has anyone else seen this issue, or can anyone shed some light on it?

MDT 2012 won't login after first reboot - workgroup only

I am setting up an mdt server for a new company that we accquired, right now they are only in a workgroup, with no network connectivity for at least 2 months back to our domain. We are using WIN7 ENT X64SP1. We do this within our own domain logging
in with a local account without problems, but for some reason not working here.

So the question is what do we do with the domain part, we can't specify a pc name as it will change each time

You should be able to leave the domain as is. My guess is that you do not have the local account configured. Configuring a custom logon account is a two step process, the first being to create an account with the password you wish to have, and the second
step being to configure the information above with the custom account you've created. Validate that the account exists under oobeSystem > UserAccounts>LocalAccounts. Hope this helps.

Setting as extended desktop won't take after a reboot

sorry to post in this forum, but i couldn't create a new topic in the bootcamp forum. on to my problem. i use an apple cinema display with my macbook. when i boot to mac os, the cinema display acts as intended, as an extended desktop. however, when i boot to windows, the external monitor is always reset to mirror the monitor on the mac book, even after i set it in the windows control panel to extend. the next time i boot to windows, it has reset agian. it was not always this way, however. there are to things i can think of that may have contributed to this, but i'm only speculating. i recently upgraded to 10.5.7 from 10.5.6. the other thing was that i also update the boot camp software on windows to version 2.1. could either of these be the cause?

MS Office CD won't install after system was restored to factory setting on T430s

I have inserted the Office 2013 CD, clicked that I want it to install the .exe file, and nothing happens after that. I went to my list of programs, clicked on office, and entered the product key, but nothing happens.

I can clarify your error message for you. The Classic environment was essentially an OS9 emulator, in case you had to use an application that hadn't been upgraded for OSX. But the Apple OS no longer provides that support for OS9, so an OS9 app such as this Setup Assistant can't run at all under Leopard. But the Assistant isn't necessary-- it just saves you the trouble of going thru each Office app's Preferences and customizing your settings.
As for your CD problems, it sounds like Microsoft laid some crappy discs on you. Maybe you could exchange them?

Continue impdp after system rebooted

Hi,
i'm trying to import a database on a local system. i need to do it on a normal system because i have no servers available and i only have to do some "tests".
it started the import with this command:
impdp SYSTEM/****** directory=impdp dumpfile=ccrexpdp.dmp logfile=implog.log full=y
Windows was so friendly to do a reboot because of updates. thanks microsoft.
is there a poosibility to continue the import? it is not possible to restart it with the same command :(
i also tried to find something via the search but i wasnt successful.
can you help me?

Itunes won't open after system restore!

Recently I ran into some problems with my computer and did a system restore, ever since I did that itunes would not open and kept saying "itunes has encountered an error, application is shutting down" after I double clicked the icon on my desktop. This was also the case with Windows Media Player and every other application on my PC.
I set my PC away to be re-formatted. It turns out there were 17 viruses on there, it's now working fine except I can't open itunes!!
I've tried uninstalling it and re-installing it. It all goes fine until the very last second of installing when I get the "itunes has encountered an error, application is shutting down" message. The shortcut appears on my desktop though and when I double-click it I get the very same error message!
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I've spent £150 on sorting my computer out and this is the final straw! I'm tearing my hair out!!

iFOUND the Solution!!!
Go to Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel and for every program that is Apple - iTunes - Quicktime related RIGHT click on it and choose "Repair" and repair it. May take some time for each program.
Then, I got an error message saying:
"the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."
Here, from the Start Menu, search "Apple Software Update" and update every program it says needs updating. I recently this week updated Quicktime to its latest version, but did so anyway. So I updated Quicktime and iTunes...restarted computer...and it worked.
That's how you do it. iTunes 10.5 works fine now. Hope it does equally well for you.

Can't start emctl after system reboot

I installed 11g on Redhat E 5 last week. After instellation i use sqlplus and dbcounsole It work fine.

Can you please send us the status of the following commands
ps -efd | grep oracle
emctl status dbconsole
Please note also
Ensure that you start your services in the proper order:
- establish IP address on the active node
- start the TNS listener
- start the database
- start dbconsole
- test functionality
In case of failure…
- Establish IP on failover box
- start TNS listener lsnrctl start
- start the database dbstart
- start dbconsole emctl start dbconsole
- test functionality
If you want to manually stop or shutdown a service:
Stop the application
Stop DB Control emctl stop dbconsole
Stop TNS listener lsnrctl stop
Stop DB dbshut
Stop IP
We have to reconfigure the dbconsole, depending on the results of the commands.
Note: For subsequent database / DBConsole installs requiring different hostnames than the physical hostname, simply set ORACLE_HOSTNAME variable to the new virtual hostname and run emca.
There is no need to re-install the RDBMS server using the new hostname value for DBConsoles running from the same ORACLE_HOME but using different virtual hostnames for different SID values.
If you would like to prevent the dbconsole from listening on all NICs of the cluster member based on the hostname and SID example in this Note, you can add host="lxdb.acme.com" in the web-site tag of http-web-site.xml present in ORACLE_HOME/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole_lxdb.acme.com_DBC/config directory.

MS-SQL Template is getting assigned automatically after System Reboot.

Greetings, We have currently unassigned templates for MS-SQL Servers in Solution Manager Technical Monitoring for all technical systems as we don't want to monitor the DB Alerts. However, What we see is that after every OS reboot or DB Connectivity failure, for few technical systems the MS-SQL template is getting assigned automatically. If not assigned, it will start referring to SAP original template for metrics. I was unable to find any SAP note to fix this issue. Is there anything we could do to stop this? I tested and noticed that the following registry key will be changed when modify paging file size:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
value name:PagingFiles
Please change the paging file size again and check if the key is edited correctly. Reboot and see if the value is changed back to empty.
If issue still exists, please let us know if there is any third party app installed on server such as antivirus program, disk management program etc. I saw similar issues caused by third party application.

Fill setting won't stay set in CS5

When I use either the pencil tool or the brush tool, I cannot get the fill color to stay set. In other words, first I set the line color and then the fill color. Then I select the pencil or the brush tool. As I use the tool, both settings remain as I set them (i.e., the colors I have set), but as soon as the line is complete, the fill reverts to "no fill" (and there is no fill in the drawn image). I have tried doing this a dozen different ways (in the contol panel, in the appearances panel, etc.)....there does not seem to be any way to set the fill color for the line that WILL BE drawn. (I can go back and assign a fill after it has been drawn.) I have even created a "style" which includes a line color and a fill color. I select the style. Then I try to draw with the pencil or brush and when I do so, the style vanishes and I have no fill in my drawing. I have also tried trashing the preferences file. (This is not a problem with the pen tool, nor the rectangle tool etc.) Help!

In the Tool Panel double click on the pencil or brush tool to open the Options window, and select Fill new pencil (or brush) strokes.

Setting won't save after closing firefox

Hi,
When I open Firefox it search my addons for compatibility with the version of my firefox, after then it open up with all my closed tabs and a notification about updating one of my addon.
I tried to change my setting so it won't open all closed tabs when starting but whenever I close firefox it reset my settings and the next time start the same way.
I tried also to reinstall firefox but it did nothing.
How do I fix it?

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry or with the compatibility.ini file.
Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

If you see disabled or not compatible extensions in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left end of the Search bar to check if there is a compatibility update available.
If this hasn't helped then also delete possible addons.json and addons.sqlite files.
You can also check for problems with preferences.
Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

HP pavilion dv7 microphone won't stay muted on reboot

I have a HP Pavilion DV7 P/N-A1L97AV with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I am having a problem with both the integrated microphone array and external microphone not staying muted when I reboot the computer. I can mute system sounds and reboot that is still muted when I reboot, but not the microphones. The only way to keep them muted is to mute all. The reason this is a problem is that when I reboot, if I forgot to turn sound down I get feedback until I can mute the microphone. I have not been able to figure out what has caused this but it is quite annoying, especially since I use the laptop with events for playback. I do use the microphone for recording classes forweb-based classroom for elementary schools so I need it operational.

Have you tried starting it without battery?
Have you reseated memory.
Try removing 1 stick of memory and see if it will start. If no joy,switch the memory sticks and try the other one.

I tunes won't launch after system recovery

I had a recent problem with some hijackware and was forced to do a system restore to get rid of it.
After the system restore, I ran all the XP updates and downloaded itunes 7.3 but it won't launch. I keep getting:
"itunes has encountered a serious error and must shut down. sorry for the inconvenience".
Have tried downloading itunes again. Have tried the repair utility but so far without success.

i have no clue what that is or how to check if i do or dont have it

okay, let's try the following procedure.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:

Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll try to get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

Solaris 11 Express - nsswitch.conf settings lost after system reboot

I have made the follow changes to my /etc/nsswitch.conf file below. everything work good until i reboot the system, i look in the nsswitch.conf file and see that the setting are back to default. What am i doing wrong?
