Working directly from time capsule

Does any one have any experience working on files located on a Time Capsule through the ethernet connection? Especially with video software.
We are adding a second work station to our small video company. A simple and cheap way for two people to have access to the same file to work on is to locate the file on a Time Capsule and have each computer connect to it via the ethernet connections. Projects don't need to be edited simultaneously, just person A edits the file, saves, then person B can work on the file and save.
I have edited on external drives with FW 800 before, but never with ethernet. Just wondering if there is likely to be any problems with this set up?

You do not need a router. But if you don't use a router how are you getting internet connection??
How did you expect to connect to the TC?
If you are using a system where internet is via wireless and you want to connect the two computers for high speed by ethernet that is fine.
The difference not having a router makes is you must set IP address yourself on both computers.. you must fix everything so the network between the two computers doesn't mess with the internet connection.
I would still buy and use a switch.. you can get a 5 port gigabit switch for $30-40.. the reason it is worth it is handling connection is generally done better by a switch.. but you can directly connect two computer using gigabit with a straight ethernet cable. Remember to set ip in a different range to that used by your router..
So with direct connection by cable or via a switch.. this is the setup.
Lets say you have a router that is set to 10.0.1.1 ie apple type.
Then set ethernet port to 192.168.1.10 on one computer and 192.168.1.11 on the other computer.
If the main router was actually 192.168.1.x then use 10.0.0.x on the computers.
Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
Do not set a gateway (router in applespeak) or DNS..
The two computers can then find each other without the computer getting messed up with wrong gateways.
BTW if you simply plug the two computers together they may actually create a self discovery network using 169.254.x.x but that can be sloppy and slow the computers boot and connection, as everytime it starts it has to go through the discovery process.. it is much better to use a fixed IP which you control.

If you want to move your itunes library to the TC we recommend you don't.. the TC is designed as a backup target for Time Machine.. it might appear vaguely like a NAS but it has zero ability to backup files.. and fails with surprising frequency. and is slow.. and what happens when you corrupt your itunes library.
If you just want to put individual files and play from there.. well neither is it a media player. Basically TC fails at anything and everything except being a TM backup target.

No, iTunes play a key role in syncing/streaming data.
AppleTv probably does not know the location of media files, only the media type and metadata, so when selected for streaming it asks iTunes to stream the file.
I agree it would be nice to have a standalone server but they'd have to make it cost effective for anyone to buy one rather than a small computer which might be more flexible if prices were equivalent.
The NAS products out there which puport to have in-built iTunes servers are ok for sharing with iTunes on the network, but are not fully AppleTV compatible due to the need to set iTunes up with a numerical code to work with AppleTV.

im pretty new with apple...i used android before but im thinking about a change....
i want to stream music and movies/photos from a time capsule to tv and an av receiver via an ipad air.
is that possible? do i need a special app?
if so, how do i connect the apple tv to tv and av receiver?

You are better asking this is the ATV section..
The TC is useless.. it is a dumb storage of files.. no media servers whatsoever.
Nor can you use itunes libraries. You must have itunes running for the ATV to stream content.
You will need therefore to have files in some format that the ipad can read and use airplay to the ATV.

It is impossible to know without info on the actual av receiver capability.. but modern hdmi switching is built into the AV receiver.. you should not need another switch and you should be able to handle both sound and video over hdmi.. but if not that is simple to fix with optical.

Notice in all this setup.. the TC is completely lacking.. it has no role in this. Anything you do without iTunes you do on your own as far as Apple is concerned.. and to play iTunes you need a computer running.. sorry but that is the result of copyright protection.
If you do not want to use itunes.. then buy a simple media player.. eg WD Live TV.. it can play content directly from Time Capsule.. because the WD is a proper player.

You can move your iTunes library.. Apple have explicit instructions to do it. If the library is moved to the TC and accessed over wireless, the efficiency of the whole system will drop dramatically..
A file you download goes.. Modem---TC--Laptop--Back to TC--Store on disk. Double looping the wireless slows it dramatically..
As far as using TC for your iTunes.. you CAN.. but SHOULD YOU?

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
Major issues.
1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.

Restore from Time Capsule after Hard Drive Crash

The HD on my iMac crashed Christmas Day. I have been running backups on Time Machine to a Time Capsule since I purchased the iMac (and also backing up a MacBook Air), but never had any occasion to see if it worked.
I yesterday got the computer back with a new HD installed. When I tried to do the restore from Time Capsule from the Setup Assistant which ran on start up, I could not get past the initial screen. It kept hanging up on "Opening Time Capsule," and then on one occasion it found only the MacBook Air back up volume.
After some research here, I tried running the utility after booting from my Snow Leopard disk. This time, it immediately found the backups from both computers, but hung up on opening the iMac backup.
After more research, I ran the disk utility and repaired the HD on the iMac. It finally worked -- I woke up to a "Restore Complete" message (it started around 10:00 pm last night). The iMac started up without a hitch to the way it looked Christmas morning. The only problem I have noticed is that my most recent events in iPhoto are empty. The thumbnails are there, but no pictures. I tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager, but no luck. Any ideas?
The other thing I noticed is that I had to reauthorize the computer for my iTunes purchases. Will Apple fix that so it doesn't chew up my last remaining authorization?

How long would it take you to download a 1 gig file from the internet wired into your modem? About 10-20 min? And that is taking into account that the info is being uploaded hardwire. Now imagine that same file over wireless in your home being upload by the Airport card in your computer. People over look upload speed when considering these things. The wireless upload speed of your Airport card is what is limiting this. Just a limitation of the technology, not a fault of Apple just stating the numbers here.

Unable to delete files from Time Capsule disk

A while back I copied my user folder from my iMac on to my Time Capsule disk, which is mounted as a drive on my iMac's desktop. I now want to delete that copy. After some struggling with locked files I have managed to get it so that all I have left is a small hierarchy of folders containing no files. When I try to delete any of these folders, though, I get the error message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." Info says that I have read & write privileges to every folder in the hierachy.
Can anyone suggest a way that I can get rid of these few remaining folders? They are really bugging me!

Ok, after talking with someone at Apple, I was reminded of a simple Unix Command to do the job, even on Time Capsule. Here's what worked for me:
Time Capsule is connected to my Mac, via an Ethernet cable-- I don't know if this matters or not, maybe it will work over the wireless connection too, let me know!
You'll need to pull up Terminal in Applications > Utilities. It's a dangerous tool that Unix and Linux people use with skill all the time, but you have to be careful, cause it will cause permanent changes-- that is what I want here, of course. Just be extremely careful, ok? You have been warned.
type "cd /Volumes"
press Return
Now you're in the "Volumes" folder
type "ls" (as in the letter L)
press Return
You should see your Time Capsule folder (whatever you named it)-- type "cd " and that particular name
Navigate till you can type "ls" and you can see the folder you are trying to delete.
Then, the command that worked for me is this:
(Please double check that "myFolderToDelete" is indeed the one that you want to delete!)
sudo rm -rfd myFolderIWantToDelete
After a few seconds for the hard drive in the time capsule to spin up, it worked! Yea!
In fact, to be safe, if I were you, I would even go into Finder first and try to rename that folder, call it "myFolderToDelete" !!!
Why didn't I try this before? I've used Terminal, I should have thought of it before! bad nerd!
But the important thing is, problem solved .
A few things to note is that I was trying to delete a folder full of "Locked" files. If I wanted to delete several locked files that are not currently in a folder, I could make a new folder, and drag those files into it... now you have a folder you can delete. Just rename it "toBeDeleted" or something like that.
Finally, note that I am not currently using Time Machine (the automated backup program) with this Time Capsule, so I don't know if it will delete the Time Machine backup -- haven't tried that yet.

Recovering data from Time Capsule after conversion from Snow Leopard to Lion

Had a problem with my iMac, which was running Snow Leopard O/S. Data was backed up on Time Capsule using Time Machine, although recent back-ups had failed (but earlier back-ups had been OK). Apple support determined that I needed to re-install the O/S and they walked me through it. After blowing away all data (believing that once O/S reinstalled, could recover from Time Capsule), the reinstall failed. Took to Apple store, where they installed Lion at my request. Then tried to recover from Time Capsule, but couldn't do so. Sparse file doesn't work (it shows 10GB, which is wrong as it had several hundred GB's before due to lots of photos). Apple Support couldn't solve issue, believes it was corrupted with the last backup. Ultimately recommended that I have professional data recovery service recover data from the iMac hard-drive (as opposed to Time Capsule). Spoke to recovery service recommended by Apple, and it is very expensive (also, given the O/S reinstall, anything they recover will have new file names and no directory structure). They also said getting data off the Time Capsule is even more difficult and expensive to recover. I'm not a happy camper.
I would welcome any thoughts on what to do. FWIW, I live in South Florida and there appear to be lots of data recovery companies locally, but Apple support had said that they have only a few authorized vendors that can do it without voiding warranty, so I'm reluctant to even call them. Your backups may be corrupted.
Try to repair them, via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Mount the sparse bundle by opening the TC in the Finder and double-clicking on the sparse bundle. Drag the sparse bundle into Disk Utility's sidebar, and do a +*Repair Disk*+ (not permissions) on it. If it finds errors it can't fix, run it again (and again), until it either fixes them all, or can't fix any more.

You are going to get nowhere quick with the 6.1 utility in Mountain Lion if this is the only OS you have available.
Look up how to install 5.6 utility under ML. At least then you can see printers. That is assuming you are trying to use USB.
Has this worked ever on Mountain Lion? Did you download the drivers for that printer for ML?
Plug it into a computer directly.. does it work? If it doesn't work locally it sure will not work via the network.

How do i recover files from time capsule

A couple of days ago my macbook pro (mid 2009, 2.53 GHz intel core 2 duo running Mountain Lion) started getting slow almost to a crawl, and the hdd name was changed automatically from Macintosh HD to a really long and weird name, something like ////////kjiosdjfk43///////////////////////////////, the name of a folder that I had on the desktop was also changed to a weird name like that. I changed the name back to Macintosh HD and after that it would take forever to boot and then wouldnt boot at all. I tried to reinstall OSX from the osx utilites menu after pressing command + R while booting but after downloading the file it would get stuck at " about 0 seconds remaining" i tried to format the drive but it still wouldnt install OSX. I bought a new HDD and installed everything from scratch, Leopard, Snow Leopard and finally Mountain Lion. Since the original HDD name was changed i suspected a virus, I haven't used time machine since installing Mountain Lion, I need to know how to check if it was a virus or just the HDD failing. Right now I'm running a scan on the time capsule disk with avast free for mac ( is Avast any good on Mac's?). It's my understanding that my time capsule disk assumes its connected to a new mac, I would like to transfer all my files (music, movies, but most importantly the photos i had on iPhoto) instead of doing a full restore from time capsule (I'd like to do this because i had a lot of applications I no longer use and the mac was getting slow from a while back), if I decide to do this, how do i do it, and, after copying the files do i need to erase the time capsule disk and set it up as a new one for the "new" mac or can I save the old backups and start backing up new ones from this point on ( I'd like to do this in case i forget to transfer any files I still have them on time capsule)

Time Machine will delete its hourly backups when it is running low on space. The daily Backups remains.
Then it will delete the daily backups when it is running low on space. The weekly backups remains.
Then it will delete the weekly backups when it is running low on space. The monthly backups remain.
Then it will delete the odlest backups when it is running low on space.
But because of the convoluted way its internal pointer system works, it will never delete the only backup copy of a current file -- there will still be a copy on the Backup as long as there is still an original file in place on your drive.
So I think your assertion that it deletes your stuff without asking you is an exaggeration. It is not nearly so dire as you are saying.

Data transfer from Time Capsule to new Mac

I have a MBP which up until 7 days ago had Mountain Lion on it. The week before that, i had major abdominal surgery and when i was in the hospital, i accidentally knocked a bottle of water over and it fried my MBP. I would not turn on after that.
I took the MBP to the Apple Store for it to be repaired, at a cost of about $800. Meanwhile, i bought a new MBP. Both computers are the same with 2.5Ghz intel processor Core i5. As far as i know, the only difference is that the newer one has a 500GB HD and the older one has a 1 TB HD, and the older one ran Mountain Lion while the new one came with Mavericks.
I had the older computer backed up on a Time Capsule. When i got the newer one, i turned it on and went through the set up process. When asked at the beginning if i wanted to transfer stuff over from another computer or drive, i said 'ask me later' or something like that. I have never used Migration Assistant before and did not understand it well enough to use it.
I transferred the backed up data on Time Capsule to the new computer wirelessly. It worked fine. When i got done,
the hard drive looked like the old one, same set, same files on the desk top, dock arranged the same way, same Safari bookmarks, and also, the same third party
programs and data, with one exception, but for the most part it was the same.
Since i set up the new computer, it has been having regular back ups onto Time Capsule.
Now, i have the older computer back, repaired. The older computer no longer has Mountain Lion. It has Mavericks OS 10.8.5. The newer computer has OS 10.9.3.
I want to do the same thing i did a week ago in order to transfer the data to the older now repaired computer, but i can't remember what i did, i'd never transferred data from Time Capsule before. I have not been in the best shape mentally, having been cut open with a 10 inch incision and pain pills.
All i know is that whatever i did, it was very easy, i believe i used Time Machine to do it, and it transferred my third party programs with their data. It did NOT involve using Migration Assistant.
I don't plan on using the newer computer. i plan to go back to using the older one which has the larger hard drive.
Both computers have the same user account names and login info. I just want to replace what is currently on the older freshly repaired MBP with what is on the Time Capsule.
I am not sure if my question is very clear but i'm wondering if anyone can tell me how i can transfer the data from my Time Capsule to my older now repaired MBP without using Migration Assistant (which i think would not transfer my 3rd party stuff). i just want to do what i did a week ago but can't remember what i did. I think i used Time Machine, i connected the computer and Time Capsule (or they were already connected wirelessly).
I did NOT choose Enter Time Machine. I think i went in to Time Machine Preferences and clicked on 'Select Disk.' I think i selected a disk that has the name of my Airport connection and has the word Data on it. Does that sound possible?
Does anyone know what i'm talking about from experience or other knowledge? because i'm inexperienced with this process and am not very clear about what happened, but i know it didn't involve Migration Assistant and it didn't involve Time Machine > Enter Time Machine, because i have never seen those before today.
Whatever i did, it was so easy, just click on the disk i wanted to transfer data from and click some button that meant "ok" or "connect" or "transfer." And then, just wait, and after some time, my computer was set up reflecting the back up from Time Capsule, including third party stuff.

btw, in Time Machine now, under Select Disk > Back up disks, there are two boxes. The first box says Backup Disks, and in that box is the name of my Airport connection, i.e. the Time Capsule i guess, and on the icon, it says Data. In the second box, it says Available Disks, and in that box, it has an icon of a disk with the name of my Airport or Time Capsule and it has an icon of a Wifi symbol which has the name, Other Time Capsule. Apparently that is an option to set up another Time Capsule not listed. I wonder if i chose one of those icons and clicked "Use Disk", would that data be transferred to my now repaired computer?

(Sorry, after i posted this, i discovered it posted it in the wrong product forum, i guess when i typed in what i was interested in, it just took me to the Snow Leopard forum. i don't see a way to delete my post. Maybe the answer will be the same?)

The very best way to do this is with ethernet to the existing router. Put the TC in bridge mode manually.
Then plug it in to existing router.. we recommend LAN router to WAN on the TC but even that is not 100% necessary.
If you want to link by wireless, to a non-apple router that is bad.. recommend strongly against it. Join a wireless network is super slow.
If you have a desktop Mac you can plug it directly into the Mac by ethernet.
But we need to know how the Mac is connected to internet.

If you end up relying on an old TC. And any of the models from Gen1-3.. and increasingly Gen4 have all reached EOL.. they can die suddenly and either take your files with them or be hard to recover. Also a TC is slow cf a USB external drive even, which is more reliable. Considering a 2TB is <$100 I would be careful using an old TC simply because you got it free.

Restore from Time Capsule problem

I had to restore my system from my Time Capsule but it is not working.
Help needed.
Macbook Pro 15/2.2GHz/2x1G/160GB/SD/MDM
Installed OS X 10.6.7 update 5/7/11 but after that many apps started to crash on launch.
Attempoed restore from Time Capsule using a Time Machine backup from prior to the update so as to rollback the OS to 10.6.6.
The restore failed (screen never got beyond the Apple Screen and the spinning gear aftewr waiting six hours).
So I wiped the harddrive with a high degree of security and then repeated the restore with an even older version of 10.6.6 but the screen still hangs at the Apple screen with the spinning gear.
I will leave it to run over night to see what happens, but I suspect it will still be this way in the morning.
What do I do next?
The drive was checked out as OK by Disk Utility First Aid. Is there another utility I should use to check the laptop HD?

You can erase & install the system again, and when finished migrate your data within the setup assistant from the backup volume. With this method the system files are installed fresh from disc and not transferred from the backup.

Sorry for the long story - but I have tried to provide as much detail as possible as to what is going on...
Sadly Lion has been a royal pain in the perverbial for me. It is slow (on a Macbook pro that is still within its warranty period so I don't believe that Hardware can be blamed - especially with upgraded ram and a 7200rpm drive) I recently got so frustrated with its clunkyness that I tried reinstalling on a new HDD and booting off that. Showed improvement (clean install vs upgraded and less apps etc slowing down the OS - however it is nowhere near what Snow Leopard was). But while I was at it I did something stupid. In hindsight very stupid - but balls to Apple for putting me in this situation and balls to Apple for letting me do it with no warning about the consequences...
I connected my old HDD via firewire and tried to access my files that are on it - I couldn't initially as my newly installed user did not have permission. Easy - Add the new user to permissions for folder concerned - apply to enclosed - done - Achieved what I wanted. Files accessed - test complete - sadly I will have to reinstall a clean lion and transfer my files over (restore from time capsule).
Two Major problems have surfaced. The first is directly related to the topic, the second I might try to repost in an appropriate section...
1) What I didn't think about is as soon as I modified the permissions Time Capsule treats all the files in that folder as being modified. So it has backed up an entire new version of every file in that folder - a few hundred GB. That has chomped out 10-20% of my Time Capsule. I have no need for these backups and want to delete - say - every back up made since last Sunday when I committed the dirty deed. Seems minor - but this is a major compromise to my current arrangement.
2) I have MAJOR permissions issues now. Firstly my Aperture library (which was in the folder with added user in the permissions) is fried. Can't be repaired/rebuild or anything. Lion wont do anything so useful as to tell me why - just get the colourwheel of death and the aperture library NEVER opens. Balls to Apple for allowing this to happen so easily. Second I tried to restore the entire pictures folder from Time Machine. It tells me I don't have permission??? WHAT. Double Balls. These are my freakin files - created by this user on this MBP on this install of Lion. I can't see how adding a user can suddenly prevent a long standing user from accessing their files from within their account. By the way the new install on the new HDD is no longer in play - all I am trying to do is continue to use my MBP the way I was before I did the test install.
My long running affinity for Mac is rapidly waning - I have wasted countless hours trying to regain access to ALL of my pictures - 14 years worth. 1000's of images. I cannot access them on my MBP, Can't restore them from Time Machine. This is the worst computing experience of my life.
I have tried booting from recovery, repairing permissions etc etc etc. Nothing mainstream solves this.
Does anyone have some wisdom to address my conundrum - I am seriously desperate here... I have genuinely decided that I will not waste the upcoming long weekend ******* around with this - I would rather forget my 14 years of stored memories and just get on with life... If unsolved by this Friday I will sell my Macbook Pro and iPad and initiate my own version of the post PC world - no computer at all - currently it is doing nothing but wasting my time.

Yup, if you changed the permissions on everything in your home folder, that will change them all back, so they'll all be backed-up again.
That will leave me with about 1.2TB of a 2TB TC used up with backups (currently should be about 500GB) - my plan was to have about 1.5TB of my TC available to use for files in the medium term until the need for more backup space pushed me to invest in another drive. TC's are just too expensive to waste like this.
Mixing backups and other data on the TC's internal HD will, eventually, cause conflicts. But see #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for some possible workarounds.
If I do a complete restore from TM (entire account)
You can't do that. You can't restore an entire home folder via the "Star Wars" display, because the home folder and default sub-folders (Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, etc.,) are protected. You'd have to restore the contents of the sub-folders, a rather tedious process.
You can do a "full system restore" (OSX, apps, all user accounts & home folders), via a different procedure (Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14).

Anything you restore via the "Star Wars" display is considered as changed, so will be backed-up.
A full system restore (usually) results in only an incremental backup, but TM does a "deep scan" to compare everything on your system to the backups, to see what's different. That will find that everything in your home folder has changed, so back it all up anyway.
If yes I will likely put all my historical backups onto a cheap 500GB drive and put it in a drawer and start new backups on TC
Good plan. You probably know you can always view and restore from those, via the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per #17 in the FAQ.
After you do that, in theory, you could run the user home folder permissions reset, delete all the backups made after the original permissions change, then force a "deep scan" so the only differences found would be files that really are new or changed; but that's tedious, error-prone, and "iffy."
Are backups via TC inherently substantially slower than say to firewire drive?
Oh, yes, absolutely. Here's a very rough comparison of full backup speeds (see #29 in the FAQ for details):

I am running my TC through gigabit ethernet as wifi (despite having an ethernet extended AEP in my office) is too slow. I simply cannot get over the serious loss of performance since Lion and more recently the introduction of a TC. It is dire!
Some folks report WIFI backups slower under Lion vs. Snow Leopard, some think it's faster, others (including me) don't see much difference.
However, it really shouldn't make a whole lot of difference for normal incremental backups, as they should be relatively small and quick in most cases, and shouldn't have much impact on performance. You might want to check the sizes of your backups -- if they seem too large considering what you've changed, see #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. If the sizes are reasonable, but the backups are still slow, or other performance seems to suffer, see #D2 there.
Are these your only backups? If so, consider keeping "secondary" backups, to avoid having "all eggs in one basket." See #27 in the FAQ for some suggestions.

Transferring music and videos from Time Capsule to ATV??

Can you transfer content from the Time Capsule to the ATV directly? I have many songs and tv shows that I have saved on my Time Capsule so as to not take up space on my Macbook Pro. It seems like a pain to have to bring that content onto my laptop then to the apple TV, then to conserve space, take back off of the laptop. Isn't there a way just to transfer from Time Capsule directly to ATV?

No, there isn't.
However! In Itunes, click on itunes on your menu bar, then prefs. Go to advanced and untick 'copy files to itunes music folder'
You'll then be able to add whatever you want to itunes, and thus, your appleTV without any content residing on your macbook pro
