Working in Chinese in InDesign

I am formatting a 300+ page publication in Chinese using InDesign and world tools. I have it set to Japanese paragraph format. My problem is that in many cases a comma, period or bracket will get moved to the next line and not stay with the previous character. How do I get the punctuation to stay with the previous character.  I started putting in no break from the character setting but there is just too many to do this every time. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
karen

I believe I have solved the problem as I needed to set the kinoku and mojikumi to simplified Chinese this seems to be working okay now.

  • Crashing, no 'UNDO' when working with Chinese Text

    We have a number of users working in InDesign CS4 6.0.3 on Windows XP SP3. When they enter Chinese text into text boxes, frequently their UNDO command is no longer available. This basically renders files unusable. In addition to this, the application will frequently crash when working with Chinese text. The only workarounds that have sometimes worked include:
    1.       Switching keyboard mapping or just selecting English to see if it affects the Undo function.
    2.       Reset the preferences for InDesign.
    3.       UNDO problem occurred when jumping between web browser and InDesign. Workaround was to select a menu item from within InDesign - any menu item, it didn't matter - and the key command began working again.
    Has anybody else run into these problems?

    Peter, have you had any problems accessing the web pages for the Release Notes? After finally digging under about 3 layers of redundant links (annoying in and of itself), the final links to Release Notes for InDesign patches 6.0.4, 6.0.5, and 6.0.6 brought me to the following:
    InDesign 6.0.4 took me to InCopy 6.0.5
    InDesign 6.0.5 took me to InCopy 6.0.6
    InDesign 6.0.6 took me to InDesign Server CS5
    I got approval to install all patches on a person's computer, but now I can't even read the warnings before doing so!

  • Can I typeset Chinese in InDesign CC? The text goes from top to bottom and right to left.

    Hi!
    Can I typeset Chinese in InDesign CC? I have downloaded the Chinese version of InDesign CC, but couldn't get the text to go from top to bottom and right to left. Do I need to download some sort of plug-in for this type of work?
    Thanks!

    There's little to nothing Adobe Reader can do about this.
    The free Adobe Reader cannot create PDF, cannot export PDF page content and cannot manipulate PDF page content.
    What is "on" a PDF reflects what was "printed" to PDF from back in the authoring file.
    It is within the authoring file where you must make adjustments.
    A related "source" issue is what label stock is specifically supported by the authoring application.
    While all vendors claim their stuff is alway the same as your stuff that is often not the case.
    A 1/64 th of an inch or less difference will put a wooden shoe in the works.

  • Can anyone that works wirth xml in InDesign help me

    I am trying to create a schema to get an Excel workbook into xml so I can take that information and make a member list in inDesign CS6 so I don't have to type it by hand. This is the schema:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <schema xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
    <element name="memberList">
        <member>
            <lastname>LastName</lastname>
            <firstname>FirstName</firstname>
            <phone>555-555-5555</phone>
            <streetaddress>streetaddress</streetaddress>
            <city>City</city>
            <state>State</state>
            <zipcode>Zip code</zipcode>
            <email>email</email>
        </member>
    </element>
    </schema>
    When I bring the schema into Excel, everything seems to be fine except that the top of the tree is wrong in excel. memberList is nott at the top ot the tree. When I pull it over to populate the cells I get no names but when i click on the cell it highlights the proper name in the tree.

    Can anyone that works wirth xml in inDesign help me

    I typically get XML from a database, or an Excel sheet without the troublesome XML mapping. Once I simply received an Access database. Access spits out XML in a mostly usable state.
    I use an XML editor that converts the Excel sheet to XML, do any needed transformations, search and replaces, etc in the editor, then save it as an XML I use in ID. The editor is XML Blueprint. I often do other manipulations using UltraEdit as I have long used it for programming and am comfortable with it.
    I did a test in Excel's requisite mapping and found it so cumbersome I didn't successfully get it to export in the 20 minutes it took me to try it. I suspect I could do it with more head scratching but I don't have much hair left.
    But I'll give it another try later today or tonight and see if I can help in the way you want to go about it.
    Take care, Mike

  • Working with Chinese characters: How to paste and modify them as sentences; not as individual images?

    Working with Chinese characters: How to paste and modify them as sentences; not as individual images?
    From 2004, this is so far the most detailed answer I could find: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Adobe-Illustrator-1027/FONTS-display-problem-Adobe.htm, but is this really still the most up-to date solution?
    Is it possible at all to work with Chinese characters, if I don't have the Chinese version of Illustrator? (http://www.proz.com/forum/dtp_desktop_publishing/221125-chinese_in_indesign.html)

    Thanks for your reply.
    I'm using Version 17.1.0 (64-bit) - basically CS6.
    Operating system is Windows 8.1. Installed is the simplied Chinese language package.
    I have received the text in a Word document. It contains mixed characters, something like this:
    教授资料
    学术背景:
      博士;曾于波恩大学(Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn)、台湾师范大学、
    I have tried to paste it in the two following ways:
    1) to create a text box and paste the text. The result is that some of the characters are not showed correctly.
    2) Paste it directly without any preparation. This result into a single "image" or group of images. I can cancel modify each character one at a time, or I can dissolve the group, but the result is the same.

    When Firefox is open the zoom function (option/command/space bar) does not work in Adobe programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). This happens only when Firefox is open and when I close it the zoom functions work fine again without having to restart the applications.
    This is intermittent but happens quite frequently each day if Firefox is active.

    MDN doesn't mention -chrome being used for ordinary web pages: https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options#Chrome
    When I use

    How about using an intermediate page and window.open() for the target page? You can (mostly) restrict the chrome of windows opened that way, but it will leave behind the intermediate window...

  • Will Adobe indesign cs6 books work with the adobe indesign creative cloud version?

    Will Adobe indesign cs6 books work with the adobe indesign creative cloud version?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I think, this question is a very good one.
    If I have a *.indb document created in CS6, populated with InDesign documents from CS6, what to do, if I want to migrate my workflow to the latest version of InDesign CC-2014?
    Short answer (avoiding trouble and headaches):
    1. Convert all your InDesign documents from CS6 to CC-2014 (*)
    2. Use NEW document file names for all your CC-2014 InDesign file types: *indd, *indt, *indl
    3. Build your *indb documents for CC-2014 anew.
    4. Use NEW document file names for CC-2014 InDesign file type: *indb
    But isn't that a tedious task to do?
    Yes. But fortunately there are some scripts around helping you with the conversion process.
    See Peter Kahrel's website. Especially:
    Free script Batch convert/export InDesign documents | Peter Kahrel
    There are others as well…

    *Before migration of the workflow batch export all InDesign CS6 documents to IDML and PDF.

  • What is the best way to work on the same InDesign file in different locations?

    I'm the creative director for an in-house creative department. We produce 37 catalogs and a multitude of print and electronic advertising each year, plus a variety of other items. Our problem is that we have two locations. In the current set-up, if I want someone at one location to work on a project but the files are at the other location, I have someone at the one location package all the materials involved with that project and either upload them to DropBox or copy them to an external drive and ship it. Not very efficient.
    We have servers at both locations but there are different files at each location. I'm able to remote from my computer into a computer at the other location, but if everyone were to do that we would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers, and it would bog down the internet connection that the entire company uses. I'm also connected to the server at the other location (again, over the internet) and have opened InDesign files that reside on the server there and tried to work on them here (over the internet) but that is much slower than remoting in.
    The only way I can think of to alleviate this problem is to run duplicate servers at each location, but this would be an update and back-up nightmare (unless I'm missing something). Is anyone operating this same way and, if so, how are you dealing with it?
    We can't be the only company that works like this. Maybe I'm just missing something.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

    One tiny thing bothers me about your setup. And you said it above, you would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers. Are you using two people to access under the same CC subscription. Even if they are working in two different time zones, it is technically violating the rules and spirit of the rules of being able to install on two machines at the same time.
    You're allowed to install for two machines for one person working at the office and then at home. One person wouldn't be in two different locations at the same time.
    Meanwhile, regards your problem, I remember reading about a system many years ago that was pretty simple. It was based on an old newspaper/magaizine system of "who has the folder." (Created before computers) In the old days, if someone was working on a file, they left a folder with their name in its place.
    In the computer age, one person, working on a file, would move it to their desktop. Then, they would leave an empty folder with that document's name where it had been as well as their initials. So if I took "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015.indd" out, I would leave a folder named "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015_smsc" in its place.
    And if it was necessary for me to have the images, I would make a copy of them onto my machine so I wouldn't tax the network. Then when I was finished, I would copy the file back to the server. The links should show up. If not, we could relink later.
    With the empty folder on the server, anyone could tell who is working on a project. So if they were late getting it back, you could email them.
    It relies on the people being disciplined enough to make the folders, move the docs, etc. But since you've ruled out all the systems for companies with dumb employees, you're going to have to make them follow the rules.

  • Action Automation Tool(AAT) plugins do not work in Release version InDesign CC 2014.2

    Hi,
    I was glad to notice that there is a black-box testing tool mentioned in the InDesign CC SDK. But i tried many times in my environment, the plugins cannot be loaded successfully.
    I followed the steps in the documentation from SDK, copied shared libraries, plugins and qa folder to required locations. But when i launch release version of InDesign CC, it pops up messages as following for some plugins.
    I tried on Win32 version, Win64 version and Mac version. The InDesign CC version is 2014.2, and i also tried the 10.0 SDK and 10.2 SDK. The message is the same.
    Did i miss anything to make it work?
    Thanks.

    I found that on Windows, the (XXX Resources)/XXX/ are all empty, on Mac, XXX.InDesignPlugin/Resources and XXX.InDesignPlugin/Versions are empty too.
    I'm not sure either the AAT plugins are not supported anymore in InDesign CC 2014 or they are supported but not included correctly in SDK.
    So bad. BTW, i found there are many typo and format issues in the sdk documentation of InDesign CC2014. It looks like not professional enough. On Windows, the search function in html format documentation is not as good as before in CS6 with chm.

  • Working with layers from InDesign to Acrobat

    Hi, I'm currently creating a fairly large pdf document for a client which has pop-up effect windows in Acrobat. The artwork is created in InDesign and the file is exported as an interactive pdf with layers. In Acrobat I then make these 'pop-ups' visible then invisible when hovered over/moved away from respectively.  I was at the finished stage, all interactive elements that couldn't be set in InDesign had been meticulously added in Acrobat. Twice now, however, my client has made a small change to one of the pages that has several of these layer effects on it and each time I replace the page in Acrobat I have to re-do all the interactive parts. My question is: Is there a way you can replace a page in Acrobat and retain the layer interactivity that existed on the original, outgoing page? It seems impossible as whether I delete the page first and insert the new one in its place, or alternatively do a straightforward 'replace', the outgoing page's layers are deleted with the page and the incoming page's layers come in - but with none of the interactivity. I have to set it all up again. Bear in mind these are interactive events that can only be set up in Acrobat, not in InDesign, and I suspect that's where the problem lies. The new completely wipes out the old.  Does anyone have any advice on a work-around for this - or should I just go and open the wine early, take a deep breath and re-do all the interactivity for the third time?  Many thanks for your time, whether the news is good or bad

    If you need the black text to wind up on a separate printing plate from the black in the 4-color images, you will need to create a spot black, and set all your text (and table rules that will change) into that spot black.
    I use this method to keep the pricing in my catalog separate, so I can print one version with prices, and one without.

  • Struts - Internationlization - working with chinese language

    Hi,
    I am trying to display chinese content thru my jsp but it is not working as expected.
    When i view the runtime source (view source) of my jsp it is showing correctly:
    <td nowrap class="INPUT_DATA">
                    &#26126;&#34425;&#23526;&#26989;&#26377;&#38480;&#20844;&#21496;
    </td>But in the actual view (the end result page on browser) it is coming something like this
    &#1109;&#1096;&#1046;L&#1034;&#1040;&#1034;&#1094;&#1035;i I tried by changing my browser language setting to zh-cn, zh-tw and also by using the following statements in my jsp:
    <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8"%>
    But neither of this are giving the end result as expected.
    Can someone else tell me as what should I do so that I can view the chinese content as given/expected.
    Thanks n Advance

    You might want to ask on the Chinese Mac list.  Make sure you say exactly which of the many Apple Chinese input methods you are using and how you have set the preferences for it.

  • Working with images in Indesign

    I am a whole month into my first Tech Writing position and I am quickly losing what's left of my hair.
    I am working on a document that was put together by my predecessor. It is a simple application note for a new software feature and has multiple images in it. Pretty basic formatting; image below the text refering to it, centered. The images have been placed with a text wrap (jump object). My problem comes when editing or replacing the text above the image. The image will stay in it's orientation to the page while the text continues to move. For example.
    The document starts as:
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    image
    I want to change it to:
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    image
    But I am getting:
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    image
    XXXXXXXXXXX
    I realize that I may be asking for the impossible, but nothing ever changes when we just accept the status quo.
    Thanks in advance for any help.

    You can paste the image back into the text as an anchored object. Simple.

  • Working with CorelDraw into Indesign

    I am trying to work with a manual that i am converting into Indesign. This particular file has 6 pages that have tables or multiple layers, how do I convert this to Indesign? I am at a loss, any help would help. I tried using a pdf but it won't let me either. Thanks!
    Stephanie

    There is no way to bring a file from CorelDraw into InDesign as an editable entity. Your best bet is probably to either export to .eps and edit in Illustrator (or .ai if your version supports it directly), or to export the individual graphical elements and place those, then rebuild the text in ID.

  • Will the A1549 iPhone 6 (unlocked, purchased in Canada) work on Chinese carriers?

    Hi all,
    I recently purchased two iPhone 6 A1549 unlocked model from the Guildford Mall Apple Store in Surrey, BC, Canada. I've kept one for myself, currently using it with no problems on WIND Mobile, but I plan on sending one back to my grandma who lives in mainland China, where the new iPhone hasn't been released yet. Does anyone know if this specific model will work on most Chinese carriers? Has anyone had any experience with using the unlocked iPhone 6 in China? I know that unlocked means it can be used all around the world, but I've heard rumours off various sites that the unlocked iPhones purchased in Canada and US cannot be used?
    I hope someone can help me with this problem so I can either send it to my grandma for her 90th birthday or return it to the store. Thank you!
