Working in H264 OK or bad idea?

can H264 be a good codec to work in, or is it best for distribution when all your work is done?
I'm awfully tempted by the small file sizes, and apparently the quality is pretty good...

iWork apps no longer sync with iCloud. I am on iOS 5.1,1, and this problem is several days old, before it was working fine. Anyone has an idea?

Sadly this is not a new problem and I would not expect a forthcoming solution.  I bought an iPad 3G and the iWork suite at the end of August and iCloud syncing worked fine.  About the time Apple rolled out iOS 6 the syncing stopped working for me (without me upgrading or changing anything).  It has never really worked since.   Run iOS 5.1.1 on both the iPhone 4 and iPad 3G.  The "geniuses" claim that Apples iOS 5 requirement is not correct and that I MUST upgrade both to ios 6 (although I know for fact that lots of folks STILL have the iCloud probs even with its 6.  The last genius basically shrugged and non-verbally acknowledged the iCloud/iWork failing and suggested "just use Dropbox.". So why the **** did we pay for iWork!?!?!
Basically the  iwork/iCloud Connnection is broken and I have yet to get a viable solution to repair the issue.  Sorry for the bad news.  For reference I have uninstalled/installed each iteration of iWork upgrades on each device without success.  I have reset all settings multiple times, turned iCloud off/on repeatedly etc etc without success.  I even wiped the iPad and restored from iCloud w/o intention (another Apple IPad "glitch" when I tried the "reset all settings" and the iPad decided to "erase all" instead.  The genius said "it happens.")
Oddly, the Pages app is the only one that has marginally worked at times since the first probs.  However it is basically broken and non-functioning.  Certainly DO NOT trust vital documents to iCloud/iWork.  I lost a number of work critical docs in this whole annoying, messy process of trying to get what Apple promised as easy....

Briansyddal - you might be able to manage your phone without a PC, but many of us can't, especially those of us with large iTunes libraries.  How do you propose I manage my 250GB of music using only a phone?  Maybe I could go out and buy 10 iPhones and spread my library out among them!
Catz537 - I have the same problem as you and I've spent hours on the web trying to find a solution to it.  It was a problem with iOS 7 and  8.1.1 doesn't fix it.  The the only advice from Apple is completely useless because it requires you, effectively, to delete and recreate your iTunes library and lose all your metadata, album art, notes etc and there's also no guarantee it will work.   I wish I could be more help (even more - I wish Apple could be more help) - I updated to 8.1.1 at 1400 today.  At 2200 I'm still "waiting for changes to be applied" for a measly 16GB of music transfer.

  • Distributed encoding of referenced movies --bad idea?

Distributed encoding of referenced movies (using Compressor) --is this a bad idea? If you do this routinely and it works for you, please let me know.
    Thanks,

    Nebraska,
Thanks for your reply. I am trying a home network to see if I can cut down my encoding time and increase my capacity on existing equipment. What I have is outlined in "other details" below. Because of the limitations, I am putting highest priority on trying to find out what has been causing problems with my real time mp2 transcoder nor recoginizing some Quicktime files and consider the Qmaster distributed processing for batch processing files for web streaming. For now, thtis will have to do.
I see the sense of having a dedicated server for the source footage. But I need to do things peer to peer. I use to oversee a WinNT server years back. Its been awhile. Do you would log into each of your G5 quads as the same domain user (or Mac OSX server equivalent)? Is one of your G4's (not the server) the controller? Is the same machine both controller and client?
For the referenced movie I tried, it took many many hours --at least several times longer than if I did the job on a single machine. However, that was when I only had a cluster of two. I might try again with three.

  • MBPR w/Hard Case = Good or Bad Idea?

I am the happy owner of a new MBPr 15" and like many other owners am keen on protecting my investment. The first thing that came to mind was to outfit it with a hard case and being a detail guy I researched the topic online. Turns out many are saying that a hard case is NOT a good idea for the following two good reasons:
extra weight on the screen wears down the hinges which can lead to a very expensive screen replacement.
overheating/heating issues even with hard cases that have cutouts for vents that can cause permanent damaged to the battery and internal components.
Apple sells the hard cases in their stores and it seems that they are divided on the answer with some "Genius" bar employees saying hard cases are not good and others suggesting them to protect your MacBook Pro. Hard case companies are of course saying that their products are safe to use (the contrary would seriously jeopardize the sale of their product). I have asked Apple and leading case/accessory maker Moshi to comment on this issue and will post their replies in this thread.
My goal is to pool the statements, experiences and opinions on the subject to make it definitely clear once and for all if hard cases are indeed a bad idea to protect your Retina MacBook Pro. Do you have anything to say or share?

The general rule of thumb is that sample-instrument samples should be stored on a separate drive. This is particularly crucial if you're streaming samples from disk (EXS with "virtual memory" on, or DFD (direct from disk) as found in other sample-based plugs).
And you'll want to record audio on a separate drive as well, never on your system drive (except in a pinch) if you can help it.
For a laptop, the ideal system would be to have separate external drives for audio recording and samples. If you're working on a tower/desktop model, these additional drives can be exclusively external drives or a combination of internal and external drives.
    My system:
    • Lacie 250G (video playback) FW400
    • Glyph 250G (sample storage #1) FW400
    • OWC 350G (sample storage #2) eSATA (via eSATA PCI-e card)
    • Maxtor 500G drive (audio recording/project drive) -- internal
    Works very nicely!

  • Sharing /boot. Good or Bad idea?

    Hi all,
If I want to install 2 distributions on one drive, I know I can share the swap partition. What about the /boot partition? My personal view so far, is that sharing a /boot partition is a bad idea, as overwritting can occur.
Any ideas/solutions on this? I understand that the bootloader must be installed only once (duh!) and that it should be configured to contain the 2 entries. My main concern is just how safe sharing /boot is?
    Thanks

cool, I think that's what I'm gonna do on this system. I know how to make the entries in grub, that's not a problem. But obviously on bootup I can only have 1 bootable partition, so do I have to copy just the relevant kernel images from all distros to Arch's /boot for them to work, or do I also need to copy their coresponding System.map's?
    Thanks for the info guys
1 bootable partition, old old old wives tale nowadays.
Your system boots, brings up the MBR, from that you could pass onto a bootloader on any partition or boot linux with a root fs on any partition.
you could have a bootloader on your mbr that passes onto another bootloader on hda1, which passes onto another grub/lilo on hda5 which passes to another one on hda6, etc etc. and any of them can boot a linux with a root partition on any partition.
    iphitus
so iphitus, why do we have to make the partition where /boot is on "Active" during installation? Is this just to temporarily be able to read the kernel-image? I'm confused on this still...

  • Bad Idea: Making default behavior of "built in mouse wheel support" set to on key focus

This is just a little rant....
I love new features in Labview, but setting them to be on automatically when they can generate unexpect behaviour is really a bad idea. We recently moved from 2012 to 2013. Suddenly, I have users saying "values are changing and I don't know why". Turns out they were changing a value in a numeric, then attempting to scroll away. Why on earth would NI make this the default behavior??? Luckly for us the value change wasn't too bad but I could think of a few places that a sudden, unplanned change in a numeric could have ruined an experiment.
Off to do alot of work to undo this....

    RTSLVU wrote:
I have noticed this too, but I swear long before 2013.
You should not have to scroll around a user interface to begin with.
If you can not fit a user interface on one screen of the target machine it's time to rethink your interface.
I suggest dividing things up by task and using a tab control.
and this is why I now hate posting in this forum.....
People just love to tell you how you should be doing something, and not focusing on the topic of the thread. If everyone is going to get stuck on the "UI's should not have scroll bars" soap box, see the attached screen shot. This problem arose from a settings pop-up dialog. I could have used tabs, but in this case it makes more sense for the users to move top to bottom in a linear fashion through the process they are setting up.
My point in all this is why would NI make this the default behavior? I like the feature, but it should have been something that a designer has to actively turn on.

  • Is it a bad idea to use Task.Delay() in a polling function?

Is the following a bad idea considering the expense of Task.Delay()?
    async void WatchDog()
    while(!bDisposed)
    //check some things
    await Task.Delay(100);
    Hong

I've not used the DispatcherTimer, so I can't say anything from experience about how efficient it is or not. The few times I needed this sort of functionality in the few WPF apps I've done, I've used Task.Delay() ... I agree that it is certainly
a handy option. Most of my polling-type of work has been in non-UI situations (Windows Services), creating my own threading (and using Thread.Sleep()).
Ah, WinRT ... didn't know that was the platform you're writing for.
I've got no experience with WinRT. I don't know if there's a separate MSDN forum for that, the only thing I could find was a forum for Surface (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=surfaceappdevelopment),
but I don't know if posting questions there would help you or not. Probably the WPF forum would work just as well (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=wpf).

  • Transfer Hard Drive from 20" iMac to 27" iMac - Good or bad idea?

I've just bought my wife a new 27" iMac to replace her 20" iMac. To keep things simple I'd rather just take out the drive in the 20 and put it in the 27. Anyone try this and is there any reason why it wouldn't work since the OS is "universal" for these recent machines?
The reason I don't want to just run with a fresh install (which is what I would prefer to do) is that it's my wifes computer and then she'd have to start new with all her settings etc. While I think the migration asst is a great feature, i've also had other issues doing that that leaves a bit of a mess behind it and some permissions got screwy once.
I may just give it a go and see if it works right away. I'd prefer not to spend lots of time "transferring" files, data, prefs between the old/new machines and just get up and running quickly since her 20" OS install is working great.
    Thoughts?

    LawrenceT,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
*Very bad idea if you intend to use the OS that is on the 20" machine in the 27" machine for a number of reasons*. First you will void your 27" machines warranty and if the 20" has any left it's gone too. Next is you will run into problems with the 27" because the 20's OS is set up for that machine which has totally different specifications. What is wiser is to use Migration Assistant and simply move everything over, this is done when you intially turn on the new machine it will prompt you. If you have already set up the 27" then you can still run Migration Assistant. Just open the application and it will walk you through the process. If you have trouble finding MA simply open Spotlight (upper right corner icon that looks like a spyglass) and type in Migration Assistant.

  • Bad idea checking rendered status in HtmlBasicRenderer.getChildren()

com.sun.faces.renderkit.html_basic.HtmlBasicRenderer.getChildren() looks at all its children and only returns those that have their rendered attribute set to true. This is a bad idea, because the rendered property of a child may be a value binding that depends on the actual encoding of a sibling component that comes before it.
A case in point is an assignment component, such as I describe in http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=563036 . This component sets a value binding variable when it is rendered. If a subsequent component references this value binding in its rendered property, then the value will not have been properly set when com.sun.faces.renderkit.html_basic.HtmlBasicRenderer.getChildren() attempts to collect children.
One workaround is wildly inefficient: have UIAssignment perform the assignment in its own isRendered() method. (This also assumes that getChildren() will call each isRendered() in the correct order.)
A better workaround would be to create a custom renderer for UIData that is more forgiving to value-binding rendered properties.
Would it hurt for the JSF specification to simply state that whether a component is rendered may not be conclusively determined until after all preceding components have been rendered? This would allow my UIAssignment to work, and would moreover allow any UIComponent.rendered to feel safe that any value binding it depends on will have been called if it was to be set in a preceding component's encoding routines.
    Garret

I've created a nice workaround that adds a benefit. UIAssignment now allows children and has scope semantics---all components relying on the assignment should be children of the UIAssignment.
To pull this off, UIAssignment returns true for getRendersChildren(). Now, HtmlBasicRenderer or any other code should allow UIAssignment to determine for itself whether its children should be encoded. This way UIAssignment can make sure the assignment has been performed before checking each child's rendered status.
An added benefit of this change is that UIAssignment can have true scope semantics, setting the value before encoding/decoding, and restoring the value to its previous state afterwards.
This won't help other components that rely on activity in previous sibling encodings for determining rendered status, though. But I've fixed my UIAssignment problem.

  • RGB workflow - really a bad idea?

    Hi
Having a "discussion" with my printer - I got back an offset job that was magenta shifted - especially in the cyan of a sky in a photo.  My current workflow is to place everything as RGB, and then to convert to CMY on out to PDF.  For this job I used the ISO coated 300% ECI profile for the conversion, and embedded the profile.  I preflighted the PDF and all was fine, did an inhouse proof  from the PDF (mine on the left).  In house proofed on epson4000
with RGB ink ( in know it wont be colour accurate - but its usually pretty close this is probably a little cyan shifted). My Printer is telling me that the colour shift in the mountains is down to using an RGB workflow.  I dont understand why there would be any difference between
    >converting to CMYK profile on export and
    >converting to CMYK profile in photoshop, then placing into indesign.
If this workflow is a bad idea can anyone point me to a good resource - I've been looking for a robust workflow that will work for most printers for a while now.
    thanks!

Thisis not a technical reply, but may be helpful none the less...
RGB workflow is not necessarily a bad idea, but depending on your printer, not necessarily a good one either. Every printer is different, but with gang run printers - they're not usuaslly bred to be concerned with your color.
Communication is key and the only really bad idea is avoiding or overlooking a complete job dialog with your commercial printer. Not that either is intentional. I would say that no matter what, you should always get a contract proof, but since this is a gang run printer... Try, and good luck.
This is a pretty touchy subject because it is not always just technical. Even the finest of printers are not usually happy color conversionists. What do printers do? Printers print. And they print CMYK. Printers will nearly always take the responsibility for color issues when you supply them with CMYK files.
100% of offset commercial printers (50 surveyed) said they "prefer CMYK files with no color profiles" in a confidential corporate survey. The point of contact in these surveys were prepress. (Now I can get technical with the profiles and excurves, but there will be more of that coming your way than you would care to know at this point, I am sure).
I would suggest learning to communicate well with my printer - going as far as becoming a self appointed inhouse designer. Make them comfortable with you, get comfortable with them, learning an RGB to CMYK workflow either eventually making my own conversions, working your files so all they need to do is run an excurve on their rip or educating them to a level of empowerment so they will want to take the full responsibility of converting for you. Either way, you have nothing to lose by learning CMYK - It just give you more leverage and color control.

  • Is it a bad idea to use NVIDIA's "reference driver"?

Boot Camp set up my iMac with NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M graphics card with driver version 332.28.  NVIDIA has a "reference version" of 334.89.  Since the 640M is of course a mobile chipset they do not provide drivers for it (I never understood why this was) but rely on the manufacturer however they now apparently put out these "reference drivers".  Do you think this is worth a shot?  Has anyone tried them?

No, it's not a bad idea.
I heard that in the past years Apple locked the driver from easy updating, but now you can just update as with every other PC.
For exampe, with Apple stock driver (as of early 2013, I have the GT650M) Battlefield says that I could have problem.
I always updated and everything worked fine (even if I had a lot of problem with Boot Camp and Windows).
The update mantains the overclock of the card (as some cards are overclocked by Apple).
    Sorry for my english.

This old account info keeps coming back on my iPod and messing up access to my apple account and now the icloud. last time a system restore needed to be done to fix it....

It won't give me the option to sign out of the old account, it's that light grey color that you can't click on. And since it has the old email address that it's telling me to go into to verify the account, I can't actually change it... I'm stuck

This is not a feature of iPhone, iPad or iOS.
Bluetooth is supported for stereo headsets/speakers, handsfree telephone
devices/headsets, some keyboards, some peer-to-peer apps from the
app store and internet tethering where provided by the carrier.
Other than this it will not connect to a phone/computer/device.  (thanks to ckuan for the wording)
