Working in Photoshop Gray to Indesign to PDF help..

Hi,
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME save out a PDF in the final tagged color space:  Gray Dot Gain 20%
I am saving my Photoshop .tif files with embedded profile: Gray Dot Gain 20%
My InDesign Working CMYK is: US Web Coated SWOP v2
I place my .tif files in InDesign.
What is confusing me is InDesign's no Gray settings.
My first Question is TARGETING my PDF to the desired print space:  Gray Dot Gain 20% — THERE IS NO GRAY CONVERSION OPTION!
As my InDesign book is in Working CMYK, and my placed .tif files are in Gray Dot Gain 20% — I have determined I will need to Convert to my print profile in Acrobat — but what would be the best Adobe PDF Preset setting to get my tagged CMYK and tagged Gray into a PDF so I can Convert Colors to Dot Gain 20% in Acrobat?
No Gray support in In Design has be baffled — I am thinking I should avoid Gray all together and just feed InDesign RGB to be sure InDesign passes through my .tiff profile to Acrobat...

Thanks, I read Petteri's and Peter's replies very carefully.
InDesign treats grayscale images as being on the K plate of the CMYK
working space.
That is enlightening, yet I do not understand what it means (K v. Dot Gain 20%) — I simply want a PDF properly Converted and tagged with the "Gray Dot Gain 20%" ICC profile.
Apparently InDesign CS4 cannot pass through Gray Dot Gain 20% properly tagged as such?
And I will need to follow through Converting to my target print space inside Acrobat.
I say this because, in my InDesign Export PDF process, I choose to do No Color Conversions, Embed and Preserve Profiles — then I use Acrobat Output Preview> Object Inspector to verify the profiles.
My first tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% image reads "DeviceCMYK" in Object Inspector.
The remaining 50 or so tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% images read "DeviceGray".
This inconsistancy is really weird because my images are all the same tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% going into InDesign.
All my text in my 100-page book reads as "DeviceCMYK" in Object Inspector.
I cannot follow that logic (what happened to my profiles and why is my top image now reading as untagged CMYK?).
If I then use Acrobat Convert Colors "Convert to Profile> Dot Gain 20%> Embed profile — then Acrobat's Object Inspector reads all my images and text as "ICCBasedGray Dot Gain 20%" as desired.
with greyscale images, I create them in photoshop and embedd grey
icc-profile into them while saving. Then I place them to Indesign and
when I export PDF, I choose a CMYK profile
A PDF Conversion would always need to be based on a Source Profile(s) — the mystery is — if InDesign's Export PDF process is not tagging my images properly, then HOW can it make a proper follow-up Conversion to my print space?
The only hope I have of making sense of this is if I can follow the color management chain and end up in the desired tagged print space.
+++++++
In my four previous books, I've Placed my tagged Gray Dot Gain 20% images in InDesign, Exported to PDF to No Color Conversions, Embed and Preserve Profiles, and handed off CMYK PDFs (apparently based on my Working CMYK profile).
Those printed beautifully, but I am trying to learn and it makes sense I could Convert my PDF to the 100% print space.
+++++++
It is possible to convert your CMYK PDF to Dot Gain 20% in Acrobat, but I
was not happy with the appearance on screen the last time I tried it ( I
think I lost my 100% K levels)
That sounds like Acrobat was basing the Conversion on a wrong Source Profile (which is my concern for not being able to verify the profiles it is spitting out in my PDF tests).
It seems if I Converted my InDesign book to sRGB, and Converted all my Gray images to sRGB — that InDesign could Export a tagged sRGB PDF that Acrobat could Convert to Gray Dot Gain 20% (and I could follow the chain).
Then again, I wish I knew what I was doing here...

  • Transferred CS4 to new MacBook Pro, now some fonts will not work when PDFing documents from InDesign CS4. Help!

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro. I transferred my CS4 from my older MacBook Pro to my new computer, and although it seemed to be working fine now some fonts will not work when PDFing documents from InDesign CS4. These fonts are installed on my new computer, can be found in InDesign CS4, and work fine within the program but will not appear in PDFs. The letters turn into rectangles. Does anyone know why, and how to fix that?
Help/input would be much appreciated. Thank you!
    Kristen.

you should properly install adobe products, not move, migrate or otherwise transfer them.

  • How does one convert a photoshop file into inDesign and maintain edibility??

I have an entire print file done by another person in Photoshop but would like to convert it into inDesign for fluidity. 1st of all, is that the best scenario? 2nd, is that a possibility? I've begun working with the files in inDesign by creating Photoshop PDF files for it to be linked to; however, that keeps all of the editing within Photoshop. And I would like to have the entire document in inDesign only. This is my dilemma, can anyone offer advice?
    Thank you!
    K.D.

You can't convert Photoshop to editiable InDesign (though there is a plugin from RecoSoft that claims to make editable ID files from PDF: http://www.recosoft.com/products/pdf2id/).
About the best you can hope for is to leave pixel information in the Photoshop file (where it really belongs) and place that into an ID document, then set any type in ID.

  • Will Dell Venue 8 Pro work with photoshop?

I was think about buy Dell Venue 8 Pro, but I want to use photoshop CC as sketchbook on my new-to-be portable tablet. I want use it on the go and in bed...
I don't plan to use tablet as final look.
    Will it work?
If you have used it.. How was it platform?
Because I already own firepro desktop that work very well with photoshop CC with too many layer.. ( and zbrush - up to 16 million polygon per sub-tool hee hee)
So I can finish off the job on desktop after tablet.

For those that find this post...yes, Photoshop CC does work extremely well on Dell Venue Pro 8. The only compromise is screen real estate--but aside from a few panel tweaks--everything is fine and surprisingly useable. We ran Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 on a DVP8 and compared it with a Mac Book Pro 2013--the DVP8 (32gig Version) was more responsive and extremely fast (though rendering required by After Effects not recommended DVP8). Make sure to get a Sandisk 64 MicroSDXC (http://amzn.to/1wtydtu)--and the tablet rocks. The programs I use frequently on Dell Venue 8 Pro are: Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, Indesign, Muse, Lightroom, Story, Audition and Media Encoder. While we have tried Premiere (projects and media on a USB 3.0 connected external)--some rendering processes were compromised--but not uneusable.

  • Script that worked in CS does not work in CS4 - multiple open page, print , pdf export and close

I had a script that worked great for me in Indesign CS. But now does not work in CS4. Anyone knows what needs to be done to make it work again ?
When I drop folder with indesign files on top of this script:
    1. opens first page
    2. turns specific layer on
    3. prints using preset
    4. exports using preset
    5. close without saving
    6. next page
Anyone who can give me solution or idea how this should work is greatly appreciated.
    on open sourceFolders
    repeat with sourceFolder in sourceFolders
    tell application "Finder"
    try
-- If you would like to include subfolders, you say - every file of entire contents of folder…
set idFiles to (every file of folder sourceFolder whose file type is "IDd5") as alias list
on error -- work around bug if there is only one file
set idFiles to (every file of folder sourceFolder whose file type is "IDd5") as alias as list
    end try
    end tell
if idFiles is not {} then
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4"
set user interaction level to never interact
repeat with i from 1 to count of idFiles
    open item i of idFiles
    tell document 1
    try
set visible of layer "ImagesTag_Layer" to true
    end try
set myPreset to "letter size" -- name of print style to use
    with timeout of 700 seconds
print using myPreset without print dialog
    end timeout
set myPreset1 to "pdf preset name" -- name of pdf export style to use
set myName to the name -- name includes .indd should remove at some point
    with timeout of 700 seconds
export format PDF type to "users:temp:Desktop:pdf:" & myName & ".pdf" using myPreset1 without showing options -- set path here format ComputerName:Folder1:Folder2:......:FileName.pdf
    end timeout
    close without saving
    end tell
    end repeat
set user interaction level to interact with all
    end tell
    end if
return 10 -- try again in 10 seconds
    end repeat
    end open

(Disclaimer: me not an AS guy!)
First thing I noticed is the interaction level is set off. If you comment out this line
set user interaction level to never interact
you might be able to pinpoint the exact error -- ID will display a standard "failed" dialog, hopefully showing the line that it fails on.
A quick question: the script assumes two presets in your InDesign: one for print ("letter size") and one for PDFs ("pdf preset name"):
set myPreset to "letter size" -- name of print style to use
set myPreset1 to "pdf preset name" -- name of pdf export style to use
Do these actually exist in your CS4, with the same (non)capitalization and spaces?

  • Format changing when exporting from InDesign to PDF

I am using Acrobat 8 version 8.1.2, and InDesign version 5.0.2.
I am noticing a very specific problem when exporting some files to PDF from InDesign.
We often have a format where we have a numbered list of right-aligned number, followed by some text, a leader line, and then another number at the end of the line. This is set up with a left indent and a first line left indent (rather than using the numbered list options), and then the necessary tabs later in the lines.
I am finding since we switched to IDCS3, that when I export to PDF, lines containing this format change in the PDF. The text that appears after the number in the front of the line is pushed over on top of the leader line, leaving a huge white space. On rarer occasions, it will move things in lines that have no indents, but contain tabs that aren't being used.
I have been able to get the files to export correctly by removing the left indent and first-line left indent and using tabs instead (or by removing unused tabs). But we have hundreds of files set up in this manner so going in and changing how they are all set up is problematic to say the least.
Is this a known issue? Does anyone know why this might happen and how I can prevent it?

I haven't tried printing to PDF. I will try that and see what happens. Unfortunetly, where I work we are required to export to PDF rather than print to PDF, so if it works it will only be a clue for me rather than a solution.
Thanks for the reply. I'll try a cross post to the InDesign forms.

  • Fonts jagged in InDesign and PDF export

I've been troubleshooting this issue for days, with no success. I'm using IDCS6 on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, and it probably happens with all fonts, but I've noticed it specifically with "Din mittelschrift" at a large pt. size and 100% magnification. It wouldn't be a terrible thing, since it's not noticeable in most of the document, but I'm trying to create a catalog of sorts (as a series of 2-page spreads) and the brand's name on the cover has the most obnoxiously rough edges - I can't send the PDF off to anyone in this condition.
I'm an experienced computer user but an InDesign novice, so I've been trying various things I've found online that successfully solved others' problems, without having a very clear idea of what many things in ID do. Reading a few Adobe tutorials didn't enable me to fix things, either.
I've seen others post that jagged-looking fonts can clear up when exported to a PDF, but that didn't work. When I export to a PDF, interactive or not, it appears jagged at 100% - though strangely enough, at 300% it looks fine.
I checked my ID display settings. It's jagged even at High Quality - and display settings in InDesign wouldn't affect the PDF, anyway.
I made sure the font was installed in the proper place (Library/Fonts), cleared my font cache, and restarted the computer.
I tried converting the text to outlines in InDesign.
I tried setting the opacity to 99.9%.
I changed the color of the text to a grey (240/240/240) to reduce the contrast in case that was an issue.
The rest of the document appears fine in InDesign and as a PDF. No extreme jagged edges or low-quality appearance.
Right now the document is intended to only be viewed on a screen, but since I'm unsure if I'll ever be asked to prepare it for printing I created it using ID's print layout. I've been avoiding converting it to a web layout because that would mean hours of reformatting, and I figure that fonts should render with smooth edges no matter what the layout is set as.
I think I've done more than what's listed above, but forgotten the specifics.
I'll try anything short of destroying the catalog and starting over.
    Thank you!

Can you take a screenshot of what this looks like and post it?
Also, I've noticed that sometimes weird crap will show up when you view something in Acrobat. Like you can see a line between the font and the stroke, but when you zoom way in, it looks fine. It will print fine as well. Just a display issue. Can you print it? When you print it does it look like crap?

  • [EB3]Events not working in Photoshop

    Hi All,
    Except the "applicationActivate", other events-
    - documentAfterActivate
    - documentAfterDeactivate
    - documentAfterSave
are not working in Photoshop; strange thing is that they are working in InDesign.
The code I'm using(working in case of InDesign)-
    var csInterface = new CSInterface();
    csInterface.addEventListener("documentAfterActivate", myEventHandler);
    function myEventHandler(){
alert(event.type); // not alerted in case of photoshop
Are these events not implemented in Photoshop? I also want these events with Illustrator (not tested yet)
Any help will be highly appreciated

    Hi Shadowfax,
Thank you for reporting this. The mechanism of CSInterface Events needs Products like PS or
ID to send out the event like “applicationActivate” at the right time. However,
not all Products send out all events now; attachment events.png is a table that
listed current situation. Our team is actively pushing this issue forward and has asked Products team to
    send out necessary events.

  • Keyboard shortcuts not working in Photoshop CC

I have photoshop CC through Creatuve cloud.  My keyboard shortcuts stop working, then photoshop really slows down, then crashes.  I've been through Adobe support five times now, and it works for about 1/2 hour, then acts up again.  Any suggestions/reciommendations?  Thanks - Wendy Caro

I am also having this problen since the update to Photoshop CC 14.2. The 14.2.1 update did not fix this and the problem was not there before 14.2.
My problem is when a file is first opened, the key short cuts do not work. You need to physically click on the selection tool before any of the key shortcuts work. After clicking on the sleection tool I can then use all the key shortcuts as normal. This behaviour is repeated every time a new file is opened. Photoshop does not crash.
    I am on a Mac, OSX 10.8.5
I am also using a Wacom Intuos 5 with the latest driver 6.3.7-3.
FYI, I have seen significant slow down across the Adobe CC apps since a big Creative Cloud update a few weeks ago that introduced Photoshop CC 14.2 and InDesign 9.2 (which continues to be MUCH slower than CS6).
The problems and slow down are NOT repeated on other identical Macs in our studio that do not have Wacom tablets. I believe the finger can be squarely pointed  at the Adobe/Wacom interface and both sides need to take a good look at their inter-workings.

  • InDesign CS5 PDF - Failure to Export Vector Elements

Recently, we have had two separate incidents where the creation of an InDesign CS5 PDF failed to export certain vector art elements. The elements are not shared between jobs and the files were physically created in different locations (entirely different servers) within our organization. The elements are pdf and eps and appropriately linked. On the PDF, we're not even getting a low-res version of the artwork. When looking at the PDF in NEO, the containing box of the graphic is not present. One the most frustrating aspects of this is we haven't been able to repeat error in order to fix the error. The next time (or 50 times) the document is exported, the vector art is fine.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?

    @rickphot
I've had this same problem just today. I have a 64 page INDD that when exported to PDF (print) from CS5 (with no elements on my page set to "non printing elements"), only some of my vector shapes get exported. They are all merely 0.25pt Black Lines used to direct a reader from a comment to a matching illustration, and some pages exported them just fine, and some other pages will not work. I've tried moving them to a new layer, cutting and pasting in place, copying and pasting in place, changing the transparency modes, etc...nothing works...EXCEPT to just redraw the lines.
    @Bob Levine
Do you work for Adobe? Can you offer any advice to this problem yet?
Thanks all. Glad I'm not the ONLY one going crazy with a bizzare problem like this one.

  • Printing issues from InDesign CS4 pdf file

    Good morning,
Could you help explain and possibly resolve an issue I'm having with an InDesign CS4 pdf file where the text and image drop shadows (40%) are printing as solid black blocked shapes from a large format printer. The file encompasses 1 overall image, 1 image with drop shadow, 3 text frames with drop shadow effect applied to the text and 1 group set of simple rectangular and ellipse objects with a glow.
My colleagues in graduate school experienced the same with their files and the output bureau's rasterized the pdf file in Photoshop where it printed out with good resolution. Shouldn't this be resolved first in InDesign rather than rasterizing the file?
I appreciate any help and insight you could offer myself and my colleagues.
    Thank you, Kathryn

The printing service uses Acrobat 8 Pro and HP large format printer. My InDesign CS4 document is in the color mode of RGB and color type as Process. I saved it as a pdf file using the standard settings as follows: Preset: High Quality Print, Standard: None and Compatibility: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3). Are there options I should be paying more attention to when creating the PDF file? Also, I was reading up on Peter Spier's response links.
This brings me to the next question...I'm creating a photo book for grad school with approximately 40 pages of images (RGB, 300dpi) with feathered drop shadows. What would be the best settings to use when exporting as a pdf file for printing services?
    Thank you for your help.

  • InDesign to PDF Background Layer Image Resizes

In exporting a file from InDesign to PDF for Illustrator, my main background image comes up small and in the upper-left side of the PDF, normally it fills the page when viewed in InDesign. I am using ID v5. I have run into this before, and the problem resolved itself, it is doing it again. I have to get documents to a printer that are for Illustrator. I have tried embedding the image to no avail, removed the tagged option, tried a variety of methods to no avail. Help!

Illustrator is NOT a general purpose PDF editor and exporting to PDF and opening in Illustrator comes with no guarantees.
Best advice I can give you is to either create the art work in Illustrator to begin with or find another printer.
