Working on external monitor, dragging files glitches main monitor

After installing 10.10 on my MBP 17" 2009 most things work all right. I have an 23" Apple HD attached. Every time I drag a file in finder the laptop screen glitches completely. It gets all garbled up. Also the menubar. Doesn't show on screenshot.

Howdy Paul Kana,
It sounds like your display is exhibiting some unexpected behaviour after updating to Mac OS X 10.10. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help resolve the issue:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,
Sterling

  • Why do CS4 always open files on main monitor ???

    in the older versions, photoshop opens all the files on the monitor on which the last time pictures were closed. in cs4 this does not work, alwasy opens the pics on the main monitor. so i have to drag every picture from the main to my "picture calibrated" second monitor.
    can i fix this problem anyhow???

    If you typed in standard English (" I didn't want to know ), it might be easier to understand you.
    I made a suggestion which might work to solve your problem with your monitors but if you are to idle to even try it, you will have to solve this for yourself.

  • How can I save Illustrator CC files onto my external hard drive - Free Agent Go Flex Drive? Nothing works, can't even drag files over. Is the drive not compatible?

    Nothing seems to work, not even dragging files over. Is the drive not compatible? Am working on a new Mac Book, its not a problem on my older IMAC?

    There are two scenarios in which GoFlex drives are supported for use with a Mac. When you connect a GoFlex drive to a Mac, you will be presented with a utility to configure the drive for use. First, if you want to use your GoFlex drive solely with a Mac, the utility will reformat the drive into the HFS+ format, which allows you to use the drive with Time Machine or the included Memeo Premium backup software for Mac. If you would like to be able to "shuttle" data back and forth between a Mac and a PC, a special driver needs to be installed onto the Mac that allows it to access a Windows-formatted drive (i.e. NTFS). Time Machine will not work in this case, nor will Memeo Premium software for Mac. However, if you want your GoFlex solution to also work with TimeMachine, the drive will need to be reformatted to HFS+ journaled.

  • CS5; Image always opens on last monitor used instead of main monitor

    This problem is back. In CS4, when you opened an image it would always open on your main monitor regardless of which monitor you closed your last image. I have three monitors running and this is really annoying. CS4 was the only version I know of that didn't do this. I wish CS5 didn't do this. Dare I wish they would return to way it works in CS4?

    Opening a new document on the last used monitor is as designed. When the behavior changed to always use the main monitor in CS4, we got a number of requests to return to the old behavior.
    If you have a document open on your main monitor and your secondary monitor and then close the document on the secondary monitor, then a new document will open on the main monitor, so a possible (although not great) work around for you is to have a small "dummy" document open on the main monitor.

  • PS docked to additional monitor not opening in main monitor

    Do so hope someone can help.
    I'm running CS5 on an ASUS laptop with Win7 (my desktop system had a motherboard failure) that is docked to a 23" monitor. For some reason, Illustrator and other parts of CS5 Design Standard seem to open just fine on the designated "main screen" but Photoshop does not. It may be that I had not actually *used* those other parts of CS5 on my laptop. Could PS have some some "I'm going to do it this way because I've always done it this way" setting that it won't let go of? I can't just drag it to my main screen (I can but it's uuuugly which defeats the purpose of using the giant monitor).
    Thanks for any help you can offer.
    KC

    I did try that but since this aspect of working in PS is new to me it's possible I did it incorrectly. Had a similar "glitch" today when I decided to alter my preferences to fit my previous settings on the old system. I thought my system was hung up when instead it was just a matter of the preferences dialog box hanging out on the laptop monitor. After realizing what was up, I changed the setting I wanted and closed the dialog box. Next time I opened it, it opened on the main screen. Go figure.
    Well, one easy fix that is fine with me - I just set everything to run on the 23" monitor only rather than having both in use. I don't really need (that I know of) to be able to extend the monitors. I was trying to and thinking it might come in handy. Down the line I may find that it does but right now I'll stick with what works best for my way of working and limited neurotransmitter. In addition, by limiting my work area to the one monitor, my tablet area is used for the entire screen area of the larger monitor. Much easier for me keep track of the cursor.
    Heck gettin' old.
    Thanks much.

  • Xrandr, dual monitor, openbox - setting the main monitor?

    Hello fellow archers,
    got some kind of nasty problem here:
    I got a notebook (on the right side) and a old monitor (on the left side).
    By using the handy xrandr tool I can set up dual monitors (almost) fine:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1400x1050 --left-of LVDS
    That should do the trick, but unfortunatle conky and gmrun than appear on the left-monitor. But I would like to have my notebook screen as the main-screen.
    So basically I would like to have what I get with
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1400x1050 --right-of LVDS
    just with the minor difference that I can swap screens when I move my mouse over the left-notebook-edge / right-monitor-edge instead of the other way round.
    Hope you get what I mean and maybe someone even knows a solution.

    err. there has to be a more elegant solution! openbox has excellent support for dualheading now.
    the xrandr thingie togehter with kde works like this afaicr:
    xrandr --output 1 --right-of 2
    leads to :
    [ screen 2 ] [screen 1 (main)]
    maybe this works with openbox just as well
    cheers Barde

  • Opening files in 2 monitor setup- CS4

    I have searched the discussion db and cannot find an answer. If this has already been answered, please accept my apologies and direct me to the solution.
    I am using a 2 monitor set-up, 1) main monitor or startup - menu bar, folders and tools for open applications. 2) calibrated for working on files, nice, clean, no clutter. The problem is that when I open a file in CS4 11.0.2 the file opens on the "main" monitor and I have to drag it over to my work monitor. Not a deal breaker but a constant nuisance. I won't even get into the Color issues which have been discussed here with seemingly no solution. The kicker is that Bridge opens in the work monitor. So, I select a raw file to open, Bridge opens on my work monitor, I make adjustments and select open, the image(s) now open on the main monitor and I have to fish it out and drag it over to the work space. Any thoughts/solutions would be greatly appreciated. Note: this did not occur in CS3 only when I upgraded to CS4.
    Thanks
    David

    It was a big annoyance to me too.  I never sorted the problem out, and was surprised when it showed up fixed again in CS5.  Unfortunately, I think you are out of luck with CS4.

  • Drag & Drop Functionality Doesn't Work in External SWF?

    Hi all,
    I'm currently a TA for a Flash course at my school.  We're using AS 2.0 and working with external SWFs.
    I think this might be pretty simple to remedy.  Well, at least I'm hoping!
    A student is having trouble with drag & drop functionality when it  is used in an external SWF.  Basically, in our drag & drop section,  we have a sheet of paper ("paper" MC) and an object we drag into it  ("object" MC).  When the object is released in the paper area, we go to  frame 2 of "paper" MC, which consequently has an animation.
    This works fine and dandy in said drag & drop section, but once the  drag & drop section is loaded into our main SWF via a MC  placeholder, the drag & drop functionality stops working.
    Here is the URL to the drag & drop section by itself:
    http://www.phayzed.com/flashkit/drag_for_animation.swf
    and here is the URL to the main swf, which loads the drag & drop SWF into a movieclip and causes it to work incorrectly:
    http://www.phayzed.com/flashkit/main.swf
    Now here is the code on the draggable object ("object" MC):
    on (press) {
            startDrag (this, true);
    on (release) {
            stopDrag ();
            if (this._droptarget == "/paper") {
                    _parent.paper.gotoAndStop(2);
                    _parent.object._visible=false;
    If any more info is needed, I'm willing to upload both FLA files.   Although, something tells me that this is a simple issue to resolve.
    Thanks a lot for any help!!!
    Cheers
    T

    with as2 you must convert that antiquated as1 code:
    on (press) {
            startDrag (this, true);
    on (release) {
            stopDrag ();
            if (eval(this._droptarget) == _parent.paper) {
                    _parent.paper.gotoAndStop(2);
                    _parent.object._visible=false;

  • Unable to set external display as primary/main monitor on Macbook Boot Camp

    I have an LG Flatron W1942TQ monitor hooked up to my Macbook right now. I am able to extend the desktop to this monitor and use it dual display style, but the Start menu remains on the Macbook display.
    I want the monitor to be the primary monitor. So I go to check off "Set as Primary Monitor" in the control panel, but when I do that it suddenly reverts back to having the Macbook monitor as the only display, shutting off the LG Flatron.
    Just wondering if there is a driver issue or something I am overlooking as to how to have my external display as the main monitor.

    I think that works for Mac OS but in Boot Camp Windows XP OS does not have that option. I did try to drag the XP system bar at the bottom onto my external display but no luck. I am having the same issue as Jack Ryan and Philtones. I am a mild timpered guy and love my MBP but this agrivation just about has me ready to throw it.
    I hooked it up at a LAN party & the display wouldn't come on at first. It finally just started working & I played several games in mirror mode. Then, I decided to correct the resolution and couldn't get mirroring back on no matter what I tryed. I also can't switch primary monitor.
    Please, someone, has anyone found the solution?
    Windows is a very bad 7-letter word.

  • I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  I had just finalized a project, went to work on another one and files couldn't be found, were not deleted how do I find them?

    I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  The other day I had just finalized a project and went to work on another one and when I opened the project I could see what should have been there, but scrolling over the entire clip I would only see black and that the file was missing.  I did not drag anything on the hard drive to the trash or move anything.  How can I get those files?  These are videos of my kids and I am devastated and willing to try anything!

    Control click does not work - no option to find files.  I have no idea what to do.  When I look at the usage of the external drive the space is being used, but I cannot find the files.  I am going to try MacKeeper's Undelete and see if I can make any progress with it.

  • Can an external monitor be the main monitor?

    Is there a way to make my external monitor the main monitor, i.e. the one with the menu bar at the top, without just "mirroring" the display?

    Yes. With the external monitor connected (and mirroring off), in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab, where you see the icons of the two displays, drag the menu bar from the current location to the other display. That will move the menu bar and dock to the external display.

  • Macbook Air hangs when connected to an external main monitor

    I have a Macbook Air the I connect to an external monitor as a main monitor using an HDMI to DVI cable. The configuration is equivalent to the LED display from Apple. The system works correctly while I am using it, but when it gets sleep, the system is unable recognize the external mouse/keyboard, and it hangs. I have disconnected the external monitor, disconnected and reconnected the USB and nothing works. The only way to recover the computer is to halt it using the power button and power it on another time.
    I have also put the computer to not sleep if it is connected to mains. It still sleeps.
    Does any one know how to solve this problem?

    I do not know.
    What I know is that if I suspend the machine, it recovers correctly, but if it suspends itself, it is not able to return to normal activity. It seems like it is unable to remember that it has to use the external monitor and peripherals in the second case.

  • My Time Capsule will not work through Time Machine but need to back up because my hard drive is corrupt. I hard-wired it to my MacBook Pro and have been dragging files to capsule in finder window. Will I have problems since it's flashing yellow constantly

    My Time Capsule is constantly flashing yellow and it will not preform periodic back-ups. When I tell it to from the icon on the top task bar, it freezes MacBook...every time. I am now dragging files from internal HD to TC found in Finder after hardwiring it to laptop treating it as an external HD.  Can in trust it to store files and photos as my MacBook is telling me to back-up because my internal HD is corrupt and may need replacing?
    Thanks in advance.

    A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
    But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
    If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
    Important thing is to get access to the TC.
    The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.
