Working on iWeb on a PC

hi there, this is my first time on this forum.
I want to start putting my website together,
but I want to do it at work, and there are only PCs at work.
I do have a mac account, and access to all of iLife's features,
including iWeb. But I'm not sure if I have to actually be sitting
in front of my mac to create my web.
I can't figure out where I'd go to work on iWeb on my PC.
Is this possible?
thanks in advance

  • Web gallery links no longer work from iWeb

I previously added links directly to my web gallery photo albums as external links in iWeb. This no longer works. For instance, I used to be able to send people to a specific web gallery album by linking to gallery.mac.com/username#xxxxxxx where xxxxxxx is the number of the album. This recently stopped working however. iWeb seems to change the # sign to %252. Anyone know what happened?

    Kurt:
FWIW here is some info I gleamed from various sites on naming sites.
    Renaming a website or webpage
You can rename a site or page at any time by double-clicking its name in the site organizer and typing the new name.
The page name appears at the top of the visitor's browser.
The site name is included in the website's address (URL):
    http://web.mac.com/[YourMemberName]/iWeb/[SiteName]
Renamed pages and sites (as well as the site's URL) change online the next time you publish.
IMPORTANT: If you rename a site, previously created links to your site won't work; be sure to notify your visitors, especially your blog or podcast subscribers.
Browsers convert spaces in site names to "%20." To avoid these symbols, use an underscore, hyphen, or some other character instead of a space. Also avoid non-Roman characters; many get converted to numbers when you publish.
Other characters aren't recommended for use in website names, including: forward and backward slashes (/ \), brackets ([ ]), tilde (~), exclamation point !, question mark (?), "at" sign (@), number sign (#), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), asterisk (*), colon (:), equal sign (=), comma (,), and double quotation marks ("). Using these characters may result in names with strange numbers in them.
    Hope this helps.

  • HTML Snippet was working on iWeb 08 but not now on iWeb 09

Having upgraded to iWeb 09 from iWeb 08, suddenly I am unable to upload slideshows using a third party program called "SlideShowPro for Lightroom" successfully. They embed in iWeb fine but once they export they do not show up online. So, in short the slideshow shows up online but do not show up embedded onto the final iWeb page.
Link to unembedded slideshow (which works fine)...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/lightroom_slideshows/markandemma/loader.swf
Link to website without slideshow showing up...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/markandemma3
Code used to embed slideshow in HTML Snippet inside of iWeb 09 (which previsouly worked in iWeb 08)
    http://www.jonnyback.com/markandemma3code
Finally, here is a screen grab of iWeb09 showing my site and how the slideshow is fine in iWeb but isn't once it is exported...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/downloads/iWeb_Screenshot.jpg
Here is an example of a page which I uploaded from iWeb 08, and it works fine, but only because I exported it to a folder whilst I was still using iWeb 08...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/mattandanna
The Slideshow also shows up here fine...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/markandemma3files/widget0markup.html
And iWeb can not get a native iWeb Photo Gallery loading online in a similar way, it just doesn't show up online either...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/markandemma2iwebphoto
I've tried loading the page on a different server with the same issue, the Slideshow Pro gallery just does not show.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
    Jonny

Thank you Roddy, I have done my homework but it isn't wokring yet.
In the iWeb native Photo Gallery page, I have come up with the scenario again where it works in a subfolder...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/Site/markandemma2iwebphototest.html
But not on the normal website domain...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/markandemma2iwebphototest.html
As a check I did find out that the Slideshow still doesn't work with the subfolder "/Site" scenario...
    http://www.jonnyback.com/Site/markandemma3
    How bizarre!
    Any ideas?

  • Html snippets don't work in iWeb 09.

I've not added an html snippet to my site for a while, but they've worked in the past. Now they look fine when I'm working in iWeb, but when I go to the site after uploading, there's nothing visible. If I select all, I can see the box that should be holding the stuff of the snippet. I've tried reinstalling the preferences file and that didn't do anything.
    Here's one page:
    http://virtualfieldwork.org/ReaLBlog.html
And another (this one you need to scroll down):
    http://virtualfieldwork.org/2011_PD_Application.html
The formatting at the top doesn't match what I did either -- I made a cross through of the May 10 deadline and the updated information in red. So, there's more quirky than the snippets.
I recently upgraded to a brand new MacBook Pro and transfered everything via Firewire from my old MacBook Pro. The same problem was going on on the old computer.
    Thanks,
    Don

The application page (http://virtualfieldwork.org/2011_PD_Application.html) has this:
    <iframe src="https://spreadsheets.google.com/embeddedform?formkey=cjFRUGZ5cFdxLVlLcW1LeXZvOTJ weFE6MA.." width="760" height="4400" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0">Loading...</iframe>
The ReaLBlog page (http://virtualfieldwork.org/ReaLBlog.html) has this:
    <iframe src=http://realearthsystemscience.blogspot.com/
    style="width:1000px; height:1500px;
    border-width:0px;
    border-color:#990033;
    border-style:solid;"
    scrolling="auto" >
    </iframe>
There are also Facebook and Stumble Upon buttons that aren't working/appearing.
After perusing the related posts, I was hoping Old Toad would reply.
    Thanks!

  • Links work in iweb, but do not publish

NOW the "post new topic" shows! Links made in iweb to external webpages work in iweb, but do not work when I publish to my folder or upload them to my server for my website. The links to other pages within iweb & the email links work in my folder & uploaded. I have redone my page & all links several times & it always works in iweb, but then don't work in the folder when I publish or upload. Even links that start with http:// don't work & my setting are correct for it to recognize them. Thanks so much for any help.

I don't understand. When I made the page the first time, I put the pics on it (page is 1270 pixels wide & fits on my 17" monitor & displays fine in iweb & when I go to the website). & then made the text boxes & sized them to fit around the pics & typed the text in. I tried doing the "wrap" in inspector, but the type just went over the pics & didn't wrap around it. I put the links for the ffrco, nuvet, email & menu in separate "insert link" boxes. The other links were from a copy & paste from the Nuvet website. All links worked perfect while in iweb. but only the email & menu links worked when I published to the folder & uploaded them. iweb is way different to use than Pagemill3, which is what I created my original website on 6 1/2 years ago. But my first computer melted down inside & I don't have the program that created it & the new computer won't take the software that worked on OS 8.6, so have to do the whole website now from scratch & having a terrible time. There are other issues, but the links thing is the most frustrating.
When I redid the page again, I copied & pasted the whole page onto a new page that I had sized & added the background to. The links all worked in iweb & when they didn't work when published to the folder or uploaded, I rechecked the web addresses for all the links & even reentered them, though they were the correct links already in there.
When I made my homepage, I made it to fit a 15" monitor, so anybody could see my website without scrolling. A good friend told me I had the last 15" monitor still in use & to make it fit my 17", so I did.
Thanks so much for looking at it. I really appreciate all your help. I have printed the manuel & been reading that & going to the Help section & I just can't figure it out.

  • Links work in iWeb but not on web

I created a site (http://www.busybeetrader.com) in iWeb 1.2.2 and uploaded using Cyberduck FTP software. The links work in iWeb when I un-check the option to make them inactive. Once I upload my site, several of the links don't work. This has occurred multiple times.
I am also having problems with missing links to files. I open iWeb and get an error list of missing links. It includes pictures and PDF documents, mostly under the blog sections (Editorials).
Any help any one can give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you don't try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.

  • Links work in iWeb, but not in browser

Using a blank template. established a photoshop background and placed transparent rectangles over the images and linked the rectangles. In iWeb (1.1.2), they work fine. but they do not work in the browser. I noticed a problem someone had by accidentally creating "floating" boxes. I have reworked all of my links with no luck. Help!!!

    I answered your question yesterday:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10520122&tstart=0
    Nothing has changed.
The footer of the page covers the links.
The links themselves are 0x0 pixels. The shape-images are 1x1 pixels.
Whether or not links work in iWeb is irrelvant. They should work in the browser.
    Check, check, check.

  • How can I zoom while working in iweb?

I am building a website on iweb, but the font is so small, I can't work... can't see. Is there a way I can zoom in and magnify the work area while I'm working in iweb? I have tried going under "windows" and clicking on "zoom", but it does not zoom when I do that.

Marty ~ For portables, see this Apple doc:
Apple Portables — How to use trackpad screen zooming
    There's also this Apple doc:
Making it easier to see what’s on the screen
And to increase the size of the text content within your iWeb pages, this is from iWeb's Help viewer:
You can make text bigger or smaller. Text size is measured in “points” (abbreviated in iWeb as “pt”).
Here are ways to change text size:
    • Select the text, click Fonts in the toolbar, and then select a size.
    • To change text size in one-point increments, choose Format > Font > Bigger, or Format > Font > Smaller.

  • Web site providers that work w/ iWeb

Hey, does anybody know what are some good domain providers that work with iWeb, and are somewhat good with them? I don't want to use a .mac right now, and i'm looking into web hosting companies, and im not familiar w/ html. Thats why i want to use iWeb.
    Thanks in advance

    Regarding WordPress:
From your iWeb site you could link to your WordPress blog having a Mac-like "iTheme"...
    http://www.ndesign-studio.com/resources/wp-themes/itheme/
...At that page, click on the "WordPress Demo" link where you can re-order the sidebar on the right via drag & drop. Also click the sidebar's green button to collapse, then click the orange button to expand back. Looks cool, all free and without coding!
Plus there's a beta version of that same WordPress theme which includes a Mac-like menu "Dock"...
    http://www.ndesign-studio.com/blog/updates/itheme-and-css-dock-menu/
...Again, at that page, click on the "WordPress Demo" link, scroll down to the bottom of the page and mouse-over the Dock icons -- they will magnify like your Mac Dock and clicking will take you to the particular page of your WordPress blog.
And just to confirm the domain-name capability of WordPress, here's one:
    http://notesfromspain.com/
...and here's the typical WordPress URL:
    http://ahotmess.wordpress.com/
    Regarding hosting:
If you want to host your iWeb site and WordPress blog on a Mac-friendly host, here are some...
This one says: "You can publish your website files using the Finder without having to buy an FTP program. We also fully support websites built with the new Apple iWeb application.":

  • What are the web host options that will work with iWeb?

What are the web host options that will work with iWeb?

Most website hosting services will work with iWeb created sites so long as you choose a Linux account.
If you are new to FTP, you should choose a host who has good 24/7 tech support in your language of choice.
A couple of examples are shown here...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Website-Hosting.html
The first one allows a trial period and a 30 day money back deal. The second has a free version which you can subsequently upgrade to a paid one with more facilities once you are satisfied with its performance. This means you don't have to commit or pay until you are satisfied and have learned the techniques.
iWeb gives you two options for publishing via FTP...

  • Free (ad free too) hosting service that works with iWeb?

Is there a free (and ad free, no pop ups banners or anything to make my site look ugly) hosting service that works with iWeb via FTP?

Actually, now that Gmail offers IMAP service that's basically the answer to my prayers. Also, if you don't know about it already Google's Apps offers you the option of having email with your own domain hosted by Google. It's like Gmail but with any domain you want. Pretty awesome. I bought a domain for my whole family to use. Email is free, only thing that costs is the annual domain registration/renewal.

  • SWF/Flash hyperlink not working in iweb

    Hi guys,
Really really stuck with this one...
I have a flash file of which i have placed wihin my iweb site (the flash file shows and operates perfectly)
However - the SWF's hyperlink will not work within iweb.
The flash file itself is fine and the nyperlink within it works perfectly when opened within a browser.
Here is the code below - if anybody has any help I would be so grateful.
    <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000" id="obj1" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/ flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" border="0" width="800" height="600"><param name="movie" value="http://droprecords.net/drop_records/drop_circle_1_CS5_network.swf"><param name="quality" value="High"><embed src="http://droprecords.net/drop_records/drop_circle_1_CS5_network.swf" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" name="obj1" width="400" height="200"></object>

I've tried about 5 different codes now and although they all show the flash button - none of them allow the hyperlink within it to work properly.
    So frustrating.
    The closest one was this one;
    <iframe src="http://droprecords.net/drop_records/drop_circle_1_CS5_network.swf" allowtransparency="true"  width="400px" height="200px" frameborder="0" </iframe>
But that opens up the link insiade a small iframe window instead of the full external window.

  • Form Mail widget not working in iWeb 09

The FormMail widget that was working in iWeb 08 is no longer working in iWeb 09. Any ideas on what is wrong?
    Thanks,
    roxpat

I got your message, but my email server won't let me reply to your address. Don't know why.
Anyway, I'm not sure what you mean you copied and pasted the code into a new page. Did you copy some code into a new document and name it with a .pl extension?
The formmail script that I've been using for years and is widely available from many sites is named "nms formmail" and it is a PERL script. The file's name ends with a .pl extension. You have to customize it for your uses, as far as the email referrer's and the email addresses you want the form on your site to be able to send to.
After you customize the formmail.pl script, you ftp it into the cgi-bin directory that is provided by your site hosting company, on their server. You can't do this with iWeb. You have to make sure the permissions on the cgi-bin folder and file are set to 755 (you can do this by getting info in CyberDuck.
Now you build the form in some program (I use Dreamweaver), but look around and there are other programs that can do this. After the form is set up properly, to post to the perl script, with the proper hidden fields that control the recipient number, the required fields, field order, etc, you copy and paste the code for the form into an HTML widget that's been placed on your Contact page in iWeb and upload the changed page.
When all of these conditions are met, perfectly, you can have a form on a page that can accept user input, and that gets emailed to an address you choose, without having any email addresses on a page for the spambots to find.
Now, there are other ways to do this, but when you mentioned formmail I assumed you were using either the original FormMail.pl file from "Matt's Scripts" or the newer more secure version named "NMS FormMail".
If that's not the case, then maybe you can provide a link to this "FormMail" site that you went to so that we can determine what you are using and trying to do.
Sorry for the confusion, but there are so many ways to configure these sites that I can't take anything for granted. Based on the graphic of your "Site" folder layout, you don't appear to be using iWeb's built-in ftp so you may need to make some changes, like duplicating the cgi-bin directory from the online site, putting your perl script into it, then upload your site in such a way that you don't change the directory structure for the online site.
