Working on making a book using lightroom 5

Working on making a book using lightroom 5 and printing with blurb.com.   My question is pertaining to the cover of book.  I have two images full bleed and text on the spine.  I can see that I can add an image to spine also so its not just a plain color.  But does anyone know how to be able to zoom or move image on spine.  I basically want the back or front image to bleed right over spine.  But there is no option I have seen to do this.  Its pretty basic book layout stuff.  Why does it seem that lightroom does not do it.

You cannot put an image on the spine. The spine has a text box only, and you cannot put images into a text box.
The only way to have (part of) an image showing on the spine is when you select the two-page spread for the cover. Then the image extends from left to right and goes over the spine.
For page-layout - and that includes the cover - you have to select one of the templates. There is no template with an image on the spine - except the full bleed.
Apart from that, I think it's wise not to put an image on the spine. The text - that is necessarily small - can be hard to read if it is on top of an image.

If I make a book using iPhoto, what will it cost me to print a book approximately 30 pages long? Working on a wedding guest book. Also, is there any other information that might be helpful in this process? Thanks ahead of time .

  • Aperture 3 making Apple books using Outlook 2011

    Hi all,
I need to make several Apple books using library from aperture 3.  Problem is I cannot use Outlook '11 in mail preferences and still no solution (or I have not found one) that works like Aperture does with Entourage (now that I have removed that!!).  How do I export my apple book to Apple using my .mac account? I cannot believe that Apple have not added Outlook to preferences for mail.  Graduation completed by kids and I need to print books for grandfolks!  HELP PLEASE,  Thanks  Ed

If I understand your question correctly, you don't need Outlook to make a photo book in Aperture. The Aperture screen should have a  "Buy Book" clickable square in the upper right hand corner. Get your book ready and click the square. The book will automatically be sent to Apple for printing. You never need to go into Outlook.

  • I made a Blurb book through Lightroom 5, on another computer, backed it up on an external hard drive and tried to import it into my imac.  I got the picture files, but could not get the book I had worked on.  How do I find my book?

I made a 'Blurb' book using Lightroom on a computer that was not mine.  I backed up the book on an external hard drive and then tried to import the book into my imac.  I wasn't able to retrieve my book.  The photos I used for the book project are there, but the 45 page book I made is not there.
What do I need to do?

You would need to go to the computer containing the book.
Select the saved book in the Collection panel.
Go to Grid View [ G ] and select all the images [Cmd/Ctrl][A]
File>Export as Catalog and store on media you can use to transfer
Bring this catalog onto your computer
File>Import from another catalog and bring the transitory catalog into your master catalog.
It should bring the images, your collections (including your book) and other settings into your own catalog.

  • Unnecessary page limit for Blurb book in Lightroom Book module

I'm posting this per Julieanne Kost's request following an email exchange regarding this topic.  I am in the process of making a photobook using Lightroom and discovered when I reached page 240 that I couldn't add any additional pages, much to my surprise.  I was surprised because I knew from Blurb's website that the limit for standard paper is 440 pages and mistakenly assumed that this limit would also apply within Lightroom.  I did more research online and found many others being surprised by this limitation after spending hours and days on a photo book.  I will likely work around this by exporting from Lightroom to .jpg and uploading to Blurb, but that will take extra time and effort and reduces the appeal of using Lightroom to create a Blurb book.  I had also tried exporting from Lightroom to .pdf only to find that the .pdf format exported by Lightroom is not compatible with the requirements of Blurb.
My recommendation in the short term would be for Adobe to warn Lightroom Book Module users up front that Lightroom's page limits differ from those if going directly through the Blurb website.
My recommendation in the longer term would be for the Adobe engineers to make whatever changes are necessary in the Lightroom code to allow for 440 pages when standard paper is selected (and more specifically to make the page limits match the limits of Blurb's actual books).  If there is any way to impress upon Adobe management the importance of this, I believe it would be greatly appreciated by many Lightroom/Blurb users.

I agree with that (though a 330 page Blurb book would break the bank :-)
I would also like to see the LR book module allow at least all the same Cover Templates as Booksmart does - I feel really constrained with both of them but much more so with LR...At least let us Drop a Full bleed finished cover on to the front and back covers!
Lately, I do all the page making in PS, move to LR to manage the page numbering and then export to jpg and ingest to Blurb to make my books...pretty kludgy, isn't it?

  • Using Lightroom on multiple displays

I today evaluated the benefit of having a seconds display on my machine (WinXP). There's no obvious way in InDesign to display menu and panels on one display and the images on the other.
Well, the applications "integrated" layout is quite different from e.g. Photoshop so it's not that surprising. But I think it would be a great benefit if one could work fullscreen on an image without toggling panels, as simple it might be ever implemented.
    Or am I missing something?

  • When making a book, one of my photos selected appears only on the flap, how can I get it to be in the book also?

    1.  When making a book using Iphoto, one of my photos selected appears only on the back flap, how can I get it to be in the book also? I added an extra page thinking that would help, didn't!
    2.  It says that you can photos anytime, can I add a photo that I did not select originally without starting completely over?
...any suggesstions for both problems would be appreciated. Thanks

you can use a photo many time is the same book - simply drag it from the photo strip to the photo frame you want it in - even though you have used it before you can still use it again
And adding photos is easy - go to the photo (in an album, event or photo view) and drag the photo(s) to the book under keepsakes - it will now be available to use

  • When using Lightroom Book module for Blurb book making, why do I keep getting a low image quality message if it's supposedly accessing my large raw files in my library?

When using Lightroom Book module for Blurb book making, why do I keep getting a low image quality message if it's supposedly accessing my large raw files in my library?

I think I've solved my problem with a Google Search. I came across a free slide show generator
(contributions requested) that shows much higher quality slide shows than either iPhoto or Aperture 3.
You click on a folder of jpegs and it almost immediately generates thumbnails and within a few seconds
I can be viewing a full screen, tack sharp, slideshow of all of the files in the folder. Much sharper than
    I'm used to seeing.
I think I'll keep the Aperture 3 and use if for the purpose it's intended for in the future. I'll also redo the
image preview files to the small size it started with and then I'll copy all of the files I'm interested in from
iPhoto into a separate folder on another disk. I'll use Aperture to catalog and to perform image manipulations
on but I won't try to use it as an iPhoto replacement. I don't think I'll be using iPhoto much as an image
viewer in the future either after I finish moving my favorite pictures to the Phoenix Slides folder.
The name of the free program is Phoenix Slides. It's free to download and try, free to keep (though I
think you'd want to pay the small amount requested) and fast. My pictures have never looked so good
    before.

  • Book Module Lightroom 4 -- can I use a color picker to pick a color from a photo to use as the backg

I am trying to match a background color for a page in a Blurb book using the Lightroom 4 Book Module.  Is there any way I can use the color picker to pick a color from the photo to use as the color for the background and as the type color?  I see the color box for these situations, but the color picker only seems to work with the color array that pops up and doesn't go to the photo.  Any suggestions?  Am I overlooking something very obvious?

    It works for me.
The usual Lightroom way: click the eyedropper onto the color palette first, then hold and drag to your photo to sample color.

  • Using Lightroom as my external editor - worked, now broken

For nearly two years, I used Lightroom as my external editor for iPhoto using the following process:
    1. Select 'Edit in External Editor'
    2. Select Add to Library (not Copy or Move) when the Lightroom import dialogue comes up so that LR is simply pointing to the file my iPhoto library
    3. Make all my edits in Lightroom (my original is left untouched at this point, and LR stores data about how to process the original)
    4. Export the photo from Lightroom into the same folder as the original using the same filename
At this point, I would get a prompt saying:
    "The following files already exist:
    [path/to/file]
Do you wish to overwrite the existing files, skip the existing files, or rename the exported files to avoid collision?"
I could simply choose 'Overwrite' and my file in iPhoto would be updated with the changes from LR.
This worked until right after Christmas. Then, in January, the process mysteriously stopped working for any new photos. Now, if I use the same process, I get the following warning:
"You can not choose to overwrite the existing files since some of them are the source files"
Interestingly enough, I can still go back to any of the pre-January images in my LR library and export them back into iPhoto, overwriting the original. I have not updated Lightroom at all, but I suspect I did download an update to iPhoto. Still, I can't figure out what is materially different, and what I might be able to do to get my old workflow back!
Any ideas? And no, I don't need a lecture about the fact that iPhoto and LR are both image library managers, and that I should just switch to LR or use Aperture. I like the way iPhoto organizes my files (Events, Places, etc) and I only end up needing to edit 20% of the photos in an external editor. LR is definitely the editor I prefer and I'm not crazy about Aperture.
    Thanks dudes!

Larry you fail to mention that using an external editor with iPhoto will not allow you to save your changes back into the iPhoto library.
Unfortunate you simply are ignorant of how iPhoto works - when you use an external editor with iPhoto and save the edited photo it is returned to the iPhoto database and the iPhoto database is updated correctly.
There are many Apple apologists on these forums
No - but since these forums are for iPhoto support the users here are very experienced iPhoto users and do use iPhoto a lot - no apologies - just CORRECT information on how to use iPhoto (and if it will not doe what you want sometimes suggestions on where to go to do what yo want)
and they will either try to convince you that other software is not as good
I certainly have NEVER seen this - every piece of software has good and bad points - and again remember *this is an iPhoto support forum*.
or totally ignore newbie users whom want to know how they can do something in iPhoto when it is not possible due to it's limitations.
Once again this is simply incorrect - unfortunately you have no idea how iPhoto works or how to use it
Rather, in my opinion I prefer to be honest
Honest maybe - but very unknowledgeable
and if another application does a function that iPhoto doesn't then I would personally point that out.
Good plan - the problem is that you simply are ignorant of how iPhoto works and what it can do so con are posting erroneous information making false claims
Your totally incorrect posts are unnecessary and could be confusing to users who want information - as the TOU state please TEST your assumptions before you post them here - totally incorrect posts like yours are not the least bit helpful

  • Blurb Book in Lightroom 5 on my Mac disappeared after 3 days of work. Where can I find a backed up copy via Time Machine or anywhere else?

Blurb Book in Lightroom 5 on my Mac disappeared after 3 days of work. Where can I find a backed up copy via Time Machine or anywhere else?

    Welcome to the WD Community.
    1) I assume I can  just hook the unit up via USB to my Mac and use iPartiion to reformat the drives, assuming each of the 4T drives will be seen by iPartition as a separate drive. That much seems straighforward.
Yes, and in case you ipartition dont see the unit properly, you can use the disk utilities on your Mac and you will be able to reformat the unit to make it compatible with your system.
    2) Is my next step to reinstall the WD software and how do I do that? I've downloaded the Drive Utilities and Securities install apps - I assume I just run these with the drive still connected and that's all I need to do?
    Yes, just run the applications.
    3) What about the firmware update for Mac - when should I run that??
Normally, firmware updates are released to fix any issues that you might encounter on the drive. the latest one was released on 9/24/2014 and it fixed an issue with the drive dropping off of the list after system wakes up from standby mode.
    5) And what about the "My Book Live Duo Setup" app for Mac - is that for a completely different model? What's the difference between "My Book Live Duo" and "My Book Duo"? It's these little things that I find so confusing.
Those are different units. The MBL Duo is a NAS (Network attached system) and the My Book Duo is a DAS (Direct attached system)
    6) Lastly, when I have all the software installed, is that when I follow the procedure described in the Knowledge Base article ID 5724, "How to install a My Book Live or My Book Live Duo on Windows (8, 7, Vista, or XP) or Mac OSX for the first time"? Or is that procedure only for "My Book Live Duo" but not for "My Book Duo"??
That procedure is for the network units, not for your drive.

  • Uploading book to Blurb using Lightroom 5, rendereing is OK but gets stuck at uploading, will not complete.

    Hi
I'm using Lightroom 5 loaded onto a Windows PC, 64 bit. I've cleared up disc space so that is not a problem.
Building the book is OK. But when I select the Send Book to Blurb button, it gets to about 60-70% complete but then stops.
The book is 154 pages and comprises mainly tiff files (originally exported from Nikon NX2), so file size is fairly large.
    What are my options?

I had the same problen with Lightroom 5 - Prepares the files but won't Upload to Blurb. Tried numerours times. It is a Landscape size Book 132 Pages. There is a BUG in Lightroom and here is how I got it to work:
Check each slide and make sure APPLY BACKGROUND GLOBALLY, GRAPHIC or BACKGROUND COLOR and not checked,. If so Uncheck them.
Go to EDIT and SELECT ALL Slides in the Book.
Select Apply Background Globally - turn it off and on several times, then leave it off
Select GRAPHIC - turn it off and then turn it on and off several times
Select BACKGROUND COLOR - turn it on then off then on then off
I ended up with APPLY GLOBALLY unchecked for Every Page.
GRAPHIC was turned on with a Graphic set at 12% Opacity on every Page
Again check each page first for these Checkmarks or just fix exverything with SELECT ALL.
    Background Color was Turned off.
NOW UPLOAD THE BOOK - It took a couple hours but it uploaded without a hitch., I turned off all Firewalls and Plugged directly into the Router. I am using an IMac 27" with 32 GB of memory and this is the only way it would work. The Mac is about 7 days old and Lightroom 5 is also 7 days old. BUGGIEST piece of software I have ever used.
Note - one of the above steps fixes the BUG - I am not sure which one but one will fix your book. It finally uploaded to BLURB today. It took a few hours though.

  • I was using Lightroom v5.6 when a notice came up to update to v5.7.  I did the down load but must have gotten a bad down load because it will not install.   And the old 5.6 on my desktop will not work.   So no 5.6 or 5.7 . any ideas  how to get something

I was using Lightroom v5.6 when a notice came up to update to v5.7. So I did the download but it would not work or install.  And the 5.6 version will not work now either.   So I am screwed - no 5.6 or 5.7 and no access to Adobe Tech.   Any help will be appreciated.

My iPod is a click wheel...I think that's fifth generation?
I've always used my firewire cable to update my iPod. I've tried using USB in the past but for some reason it always says that my iPod has low battery and won't let me update it, so I just use firewire. Can I not use firewire with itunes 7?
I'll try using the USB again. It's laying around here somewhere. Just gotta find it.

  • I am making a book in iPhoto using a double page spread and blank layout. I can't find a way to minimize the picture. it is too big in all the themes. I seems like there must be a way to shrink it not just zoom to make it fit?

Command (right) - click on the photo and select Fit to Frame in the contextual menu:
Not all frames in a theme offer that feature but most do.  The spread layout doesn't.

  • I'm using Lightroom cc, I'm trying to create a develop preset. I'm making changes to one photo that I want to apply to many other photos, one of the changes is to blur the background using the adjustment brush. When I am blurring I am going over the photo

I'm using Lightroom cc, I'm trying to create a develop preset. I'm making changes to one photo that I want to apply to many other photos, one of the changes is to blur the background using the adjustment brush. When I am blurring I am going over the photo several times, when I go to create the preset the adjustment brush is not an option to check. How do I add the adjustment brush to the develop presets. Thanks Ron.

The adjustment brush cannot be added to a develop preset.
If you can replace the adjustment brush with a gradient filter or radial filter, you can add those to a dev preset.
If a gradient filter or radial filter is not an option for you, you can at least create an adjustment preset to remember your brush settings.
