Working on the same Excel10 file from 2 networked PCs Win7 & Win 8.1 - Syncing / Saving problems

I want to be able to make changes to an Excel 10 file that resides in a laptop (Win7 OS) in a folder shared with a desktop (Win 8.1 OS). If the file is open in the laptop and I am trying to open to work on it from the desktop I get the message that the file
is locked since it is in use by another user and if I want to open as a local "read only" file. This means that any changes to it will not be reflected to the "mother" file residing in the laptop.
I can close the file (close Excel 10) in the laptop then I can access and change the file in the desktop  but when it comes to saving it, I get the message that "the file may have been changed by another user and can only be saved as a copy file
or overwrite the original". Clearly neither of these 2 choices is acceptable since saving as a copy file results in a file that does not incorporate the changes done in the laptop (mother file), if a overwrite then all the changes done in the laptop are
lost!
Is there a way out of this? In Win XP there were the "briefcase" folders to do this but these are not available in Win 7 or 8.
I can see a "shared folder synchronisation" but I am not sure exactly what this does and whether it will do what I want.
I do NOT want to use "sky drives" because of security issues. I could consider using the Sharepoint Workspace, assuming that it uses heave encryption techniques.
Can anyone help?
SpaceBaz

Hi,
Briefcase still exists in Windows 7 system. Please see link below
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/sync-using-briefcase#1TC=windows-7
Regarding to the error message "the file may have been changed by another user and can only be saved as a copy file or overwrite the original". Either save a copy or overwrite changes, you can see description in the link below
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/324491/
For “if a overwrite then all the changes done in the laptop are lost!”, for example, the first person has made changes to the excel on the shared folder, then he close the file, and then the second person made changes on the same excel in another
computer, the two changes should all be done to the files, but if the two persons made a same change to the excel, then absolutely, second one will overwrite the first one.
Regards.

    Hi Tracie,
    I upgraded to Maverick OS X 10.9.5, numbers spreadsheet is saved. Upon re-opening, it appears to be frozen, a warning "file is invalid as index.xml file is missing". I checked, and the file is not "locked". This appears to occur only with using the new numbers app. When I open previous spreadsheets from old iWorks, no such problem occurs.
    How did you resolve your problem?
    Would appreciate any help here.

  • How can we enable multiple people to work on the same Xcelsius file

    I want to enable multiple people work on the same file as I am working on. How Can I achieve this task?

    Hi Jain,
    I dont think there is a logic behind your requirement.  If multiple persons are allowed to work on one file, then whose modification has to get saved as a final copy.  Even in MS office documents also, you will be notified/prompted if you are opening at the same time some one else is already working on the same.  Please clarify your requirement more.
    If i presume that if you are talking about the Xcelsius output file such as word, pdf, etc.,. then it is clear that all can open the same file in read only mode except the one who is opening the same First.  Anyhow they cannot modify the SWF contents.  Only header or footer can be inserted.
    Hope this is clear.  Please revert on your exact requirement.
    With best wishes

  • What is the best way to work on the same InDesign file in different locations?

    I'm the creative director for an in-house creative department. We produce 37 catalogs and a multitude of print and electronic advertising each year, plus a variety of other items. Our problem is that we have two locations. In the current set-up, if I want someone at one location to work on a project but the files are at the other location, I have someone at the one location package all the materials involved with that project and either upload them to DropBox or copy them to an external drive and ship it. Not very efficient.
    We have servers at both locations but there are different files at each location. I'm able to remote from my computer into a computer at the other location, but if everyone were to do that we would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers, and it would bog down the internet connection that the entire company uses. I'm also connected to the server at the other location (again, over the internet) and have opened InDesign files that reside on the server there and tried to work on them here (over the internet) but that is much slower than remoting in.
    The only way I can think of to alleviate this problem is to run duplicate servers at each location, but this would be an update and back-up nightmare (unless I'm missing something). Is anyone operating this same way and, if so, how are you dealing with it?
    We can't be the only company that works like this. Maybe I'm just missing something.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

    One tiny thing bothers me about your setup. And you said it above, you would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers. Are you using two people to access under the same CC subscription. Even if they are working in two different time zones, it is technically violating the rules and spirit of the rules of being able to install on two machines at the same time.
    You're allowed to install for two machines for one person working at the office and then at home. One person wouldn't be in two different locations at the same time.
    Meanwhile, regards your problem, I remember reading about a system many years ago that was pretty simple. It was based on an old newspaper/magaizine system of "who has the folder." (Created before computers) In the old days, if someone was working on a file, they left a folder with their name in its place.
    In the computer age, one person, working on a file, would move it to their desktop. Then, they would leave an empty folder with that document's name where it had been as well as their initials. So if I took "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015.indd" out, I would leave a folder named "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015_smsc" in its place.
    And if it was necessary for me to have the images, I would make a copy of them onto my machine so I wouldn't tax the network. Then when I was finished, I would copy the file back to the server. The links should show up. If not, we could relink later.
    With the empty folder on the server, anyone could tell who is working on a project. So if they were late getting it back, you could email them.
    It relies on the people being disciplined enough to make the folders, move the docs, etc. But since you've ruled out all the systems for companies with dumb employees, you're going to have to make them follow the rules.

  • Can I use the same tpz file from PI 7.0 to PI 7.1 ?

    I have configured JDBC sender (Oracle 10.2) to ABAP proxy receiver scenario using PI 7.0
    The customer now wants to install PI 7.1 and they want this to be a fresh installation, not an upgrade.
    If I export my configurations to the tpz, can I import the same in PI 7.1 as it is?
    Also, please let me know is there are any other risks that I should consider.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Prasad

    I was able to get some helpful answers in this thread
    PI 7.0  & PI 7.1
    What I understand is that it is mostly prossible but minor adjustments may be required. I guess I will understand the intricacies when it is actually done.
    Thanks all for your replies. I have awarded points for the helpful answers.

  • Can keyboardEvent and mouseEvent work in the same .swf file?

    I'm nowhere near an expert on Flash or action script, so this is probably a simple thing to solve. But so far I haven't figured it out.
    I put together a rather simple interactive .swf file using graphical "buttons" to navigate through different screens. Afterwards, I was told to add in two keyboard events as well: one to navigate to the next screen and one to restart the .swf file.
    Using the keyboard to navigate the way I explained above works fine--that is, until I use the mouse to click on a button. Once I do that, the keyboard events no longer work. For example, if I start off the .swf file by pressing the Space bar on the keyboard to navigate to another page, it works fine. If I then press the "R" key on the keyboard to restart the .swf file, that works fine as well.
    However, the first time I click on one of the buttons on the stage to navigate to another screen, the keyboard events no longer work. I can press the Space bar, and nothing. I can press the "R" key to restart the .swf file, and nothing. It's as if using a mouse event disabled the keyboard events or made the .swf file stop "listening" for keyboard events. The only way I can get the keyboard events to work again is by clicking somewhere on the stage and THEN pressing the appropriate keyboard key. I'm guessing that's because I put the focus back on the stage, maybe?? (again, not an expert here)
    My code is ridiculously simple, and it's on the first frame:
    stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, onKey);
    function onKey(event:KeyboardEvent):void
        if (event.keyCode == Keyboard.SPACE)
            gotoAndPlay(currentFrame + 1);
         if (event.keyCode == 82)
            gotoAndPlay(1);
    Is there anything I need to do to this to make sure the .swf file is always "listening" and registering the keyboard events?
    Thanks..

    use:
    trace("defined");
    stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, onKey);
    function onKey(event:KeyboardEvent):void
    trace(event);
        if (event.keyCode == Keyboard.SPACE)
            gotoAndPlay(currentFrame + 1);
         if (event.keyCode == 82)
            gotoAndPlay(1);
    test by clicking one of your buttons and watching the output panel for "defined".  if you don't see that, you're not defining a keyboard listener when that button is clicked.  if you do see it, then click a keyboard key.  (if you're testing in the flash test environment make sure you disable keyboard shortcuts.)   if you fail to see the keyboardevent trace, you're removing or disabling your listener after it's defined.

  • Is there a way for me to have two Macs work with the same iTunes library?

    Hey all,
    I am replacing a G5 tower I have with a MacBook and I am of course going down in HD size. This means I will be using an external HD connected to a AirportExtreme BaseStation so all of my Macs can utilize it.
    I plan on putting my iTunes library on this external drive (roughly 90GB in size), and I would like to be able to rate/edit music from either of my two laptops; is this possible?
    If so, how would I go about doing that? And what, if anything, should I be mindful of? I don't want to lose my ratings or other info.
    Thanks in advance.

    Sure. Hold down the Option key when you open iTunes, and iTunes will allow you to select the iTunes Library file of your choice. So, you can select the same library file from both computers. The iTunes Library file can be on either computer or on the ext HD, next to your music folder.
    An iTunes Library file can only be accessed by one user at a time. That's the only limitation, though it may not be relevant to your intended use.

    Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
    Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?

  • 2 computers at home working with the same files i keep on an external hard drive to free up space the internal drives. I have an airport extreme time capsule to back up both computers. how can i get it to back up the hard drive plugged into time capsual?

    I want to run both my macbook pro and imac from a single external hard drive.
    i bought a time capsual and set it us as my network and plugged my external hard drive into it. so now both my computers can access it and work on the same image and film files. the time capsual does a lovely job of backing up both my computers and my wifes. but i cant get it to back up the external hard drive that is conected to it. ive looked on the forum and it seems to me that its not possible, which seems odd to me that mac would enable you to plug a hard drive into the time capsual but not let you back it up, what is the point in that!?
    so my question is can i back up the external hard drive with time machine, and if not how do i set up my home network so that all my computers can access the same files and time machine will back everything up?
    I did the upgrade to maverics on my imac which has caused me a major headache as now all my apature albums have been updated to 3.5.1 but my macbook pro can no longer open them because im unable to upgade it to maverics, but thats another story.
    If anyone can help me with my time machine issue i would be very greatful.
    many thanks

    The TC for whatever it is promoted as,, is still a simple hard disk in a router. It was designed for laptops to use as a backup. A desktop can use a USB drive, faster cheaper and more reliable than a network drive but the laptops need a network wireless storage. Hence the TC. It is NOT nor was it ever designed to do the job you are trying to use it for.. it is not a NAS.. it has no internal backup.
    What is more Time Machine has no ability to backup network drives no matter what their format.
    So the solution is to either use a real backup software.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner which can do far more than TM can or ever will. It is around $40 so hardly expensive. But since the TC was never designed for it, this will be slow.. and the next question is where are you going to back to. Using the TC as backup location for your files is less than great. Primarily because all your files are still on the same device albeit on different disk. It is also because mixing data and TM backups is not so great. The TC cannot be partitioned although you can alleviate some of the issues..
    See this info.
    Q3 here http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
    Let me go back to the question.
    so my question is can i back up the external hard drive with time machine, and if not how do i set up my home network so that all my computers can access the same files and time machine will back everything up?
    Fundamentally the TC is the wrong place to do this.
    The right place is to plug the USB drive into the iMac.. since it is a desktop machine and you are probably not lugging it around. Simply share the USB drive to the network.
    The MBP can then access the USB drive, and it will be around twice the speed of networking to the same drive on the TC. TM on the iMac can then also backup the USB drive to the TC as part of the normal TM backups.
    The only thing is the iMac needs to be turned on to allow MBP access.

  • Hi all, i can't sync over wifi between my iPhone 4 and Windows 7 64 bit, wifi sync works with the same phone and my Windows 8 machine, tried solutions from other threads with no luck, just thought i'd see if anyone else had any ideas, thanks.

    Hi all, i can't sync over wifi between my iPhone 4 and Windows 7 64 bit, wifi sync works with the same phone and my Windows 8 machine so the problem seems confined to Windows 7. I've tried solutions from other threads -
    Making sure everything is allowed through firewall
    Rebooting phone/laptop/router
    Disabling ipv6
    Disabling all networks except the one curently on
    Re-installing iTunes
    Restoring iPhone
    No luck with any of those unfortunately so i just thought i'd see if anyone else is still without wifi sync after trying those as well and if you ever found a fix, thanks.

    I just wanted to leave a note that it's working now. I'm not sure if it was the latest iTunes update that got it working or that i decided to start a new library instead of using the one i had backed up on Windows 8 (it didn't occur to me to check using the old library when i re-installed iTunes). But if anyone is having this problem, it might be worth trying again with a new installation of iTunes to see if the latest update works for you, and if not, try using a fresh library instead of a backup (by fresh library i mean discard your old library completely and start a new library, not just restore as new iPhone, a whole new library).

  • Working on the same document over network

    Hi Folks,
    sometimes we have some persons they want to work on the same document (word document) over the network (file sharing), how can i solve it so that the server (os x 10.6.4) able to let the persons to work parallel on the same document and nothing in the document will be lost
    best regards
    Halooos

    You need an application that supports multiple accesses. Few do.
    Most applications will lock the file so that other systems on the network can't open it.
    Some will also detect if the file gets changed behind its back (e.g. some other machine on the network updates the file while it's open).
    Few support multiple concurrent edits - it's too easy for multiple users to change the same part and then you have issues over who has priority. The app has to specifically support this so that each running app knows who's doing what, and even then there are usually restricted file formats (can you imagine several users editing the same image in PhotoShop, for example?)

    Have the project, events and media on one drive which is common to both macs.
    You can download FCP X to both macs using the same Apple ID that it was purchased with.

    Thanks b noir,
    I tried this solution without success. After FixIt ran and didn't find a problem, either in looking for issues with "software upgrade" or "iTunes" it kindly offered to help me uninstall iTunes. I had thought of this as a possibilty but it seems to me that if you do that you lose a lot of "non-native-to-Apple" information you might have entered. I did this once and recovery was painfull. Is there a way to uninstall iTunes without losing all of that sort of thing? Any help would be appreciated.
