Working solution for Ideapad S205 + Ubuntu

If someone wnats to install Ubuntu on Ideapad s205 here is an easy solution for newbies that do not require to downgrade Grub.
(Ubuntu was installed as the primary system without option for dual boot !)
The only thing you should do is not use predefined partition and instead manually select your own partitions:
1st partition - Efi (50mb)
2nd partition - ext4 for the '/' (rest of hard drive memory)
3rd partition - swap (4-5gb)
Tested this solution yesterday and it works 100 %. However the only problem is the WIFI which still does not work but probably there is a way for this too.

You can re-enable your Wifi by going into the BIOS boot order menu and making sure your HDD is set to #1 and the mysterious "ubuntu" entry is #2.

Full, easy guide above. Because it took me forever to figure out how to make it work. (Guide is for ubuntu version 12.10 64-bit). Only 64 bit will work with UEFI, 32 bit will not. So if your installation is getting screwy, that might be why.

Someone have a working solution for external flvs?

I've been going around in circles for a week on this one.... trying several different methods, all of which have issues.
All I want is this....
I have an HTML page that has movs or flvs embedded which don't load until you click on play... and when you do, it does a Fast Start type of thing, where it starts playing once it has enough of a head start....
I've tried seemingly everything...
-Mov files exported from AfterEffects (as Fast Start), embedded in the HTML.... Doesn't Fast Load for some unknown reason.
-Using prettyPhoto (Lightbox-like app) with Fast Start mov's ... Doesn't Fast Start.
-Using prettyPhoto (Lightbox-like app) with flv's ... Doesn't appear to do .flv's.... Only .swf's.
-Using a variety of codes found online for embedded mov's.... Still doeesn't Fast Start.
-Using a variety of codes found online for embedded flv's... Either flat out doesn't work... has errors... or requires 'free' flv players that are not free if you use them commercially (as I would be).
Lastly, I tried 'playing back external flv files dynamically' (from the Adobe Flash CS3 manual.... which I ended up getting to work (and although I can't tell if it's Fast Starting, it certainly loads and plays fast enough, and probably is.... You just don't see the load bar, so it's not entirely obvious if it is).
That's all good... but the sample code from the manual has some issues... Namely, no controls. So, I put in a 'Play' button on frame one, and have it jump to the video object (frame 3) when you click the button. That's fine.... but the problem now is that there is no way to restart the video once it's played (or pause it while it's playing, restart half way through, etc). I can't just put in a 'Play Again' button at the end, since the FLV is loading externally, so I don't have an actual timeline for the movie clip to put any code on, to happen at the end of the video.
Does anyone have ANY EASY, WORKING solution to give me a thumbnail gallery of videos which you can click on and view, where the clips do NOT load until you click play, and when they load, they play as soon as they have enough of a head start? It can be .mov or .flv....

For those following along, I found that Adobe Flash CS3's FLV Player component works well, and is FAR less complicated than all the other solutions I found. I'm still working on getting it to behave exactly as intended, but it's definitely the easiest and most successful solution so far.
At this point, I have the embedded clips that display right away (despite not being fully loaded)... so you don't have blank spots, like non-progressive clips would do while they are loading. They also allow you to hit play even while they are still loading. So, all that is very good... The only issue now is the clips download regardless of whether you hit play or not... so all clips on the page will be downloading when you enter the page (causing a possible bottleneck, plus downloading all that data, regardless of whether it's needed or not).

Fn key solutions for Ideapad 415e

I just bought an Ideapad 415 and am really liking it thus far. I use the F keys (especially F2, F4, and F12) a lot, so I've already gone to the BIOS to disable the "hotkeys" so now when I press F2 I can directly edit file names and cell entries in spreadsheets.
A problem that I am now encountering is that having done this, my "Home" key is now "Pause" unless I hold the Fn key. I use both the F keys and the Home / End / PgUp / PgDn keys a lot and am hoping to be able to use all of these keys without holding the Fn button. Is there a way t accomplish this and get "the best of both worlds," so to speak?
Any advice would be super appreciated. I understand that I can download third-party software to remap my keyboard but I am hoping not to resort to that unless it's known that that is not doable.

I also changed the BIOS settings to disable the hotkeys. In order to get the Home and End keys to work properly after the BIOS change, hit the Home key plus the Ctrl key at the same time. Using the Crtl key with the End key accomplishes proper navigation also. I've tested it on web pages and Office applications, i.e. Excel and Word. Much easier than hitting the Fn key each time to use the function keys as they were originally intended to be used.
I couldn't figure out how to get PgUp and PgDn keys (upper righthand corner of keyboard) on my s510p laptop to work as they should. Instead, I'll turn the Num Lock off and use the PgUp and PgDn keys on the numeric keyboard. Can also do the same for the Home and End keys.

You appear to have two issues: 1) a hard drive that is not working properly and 2) files you wish to recover.
Re 1) you need to answer Kappy's questions.
Re 2) does the drive load and can you see your photo files? If so can you copy them to another drive?
Do you not have a backup of the photo files?

There are numerous reports of this issue happening on iPhones. It may be a glitch that will need a new update. Some find that a full shut-down and restart fixes that problem, but not always.

iPhones purchased in the US are NOT guaranteed to work with 4G bands outside of North America.
For what crazy reason did you purchase an iPhone in the US if you live in Greece? If your phone needs servicing, it will have to be brought back to the US. You cannot get that phone serviced in Greece.

If you have a screen protector on the iPad's screen, try removing it. If you don't or that doesn't help, and restoring the iPad to factory settings has not corrected the problem, then the iPad probably has a hardware problem and will need to be taken or sent to Apple for replacement.

Optical audio out not working (incl the solution for me)

new 2011 Mac Mini, 2.5G
connecting to
a) TV via HDMI
b) to a D/A converter and amplifier for a bit better music output
This worked perfectly for my previous MiniMac that I replace due to my need for speed.
Now, I could see some red light at the end of the optical cable, but the D/A box did not recognize a signal?
Furthermore, the Sound switch in Settings would only make the TV play.
solution:
after a lot of troubleshooting at the Genius Bar in Beijing (big thanks for that ... the shop is terribly crowded and they never manage to keep the appointments), we found the optical cable to be faulty .... it was apparently bent too much and still had some throughput but not enough to make the receiver read it.

ONLY the carrier it is locked to can authorize unlocking it. Most have restrictions in that you must be a current customer and have maintained service for a minimum period of time. Do yourself a favor, sell it and purchase a phone in India instead.

Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

You can do both, whatever is more convenient to you. As long as VZW gets its hands on the old device you will be good to go. Replacements under the warranrty require the user to turn in the old device to VZW. If your old device is not returned then you will be charged a fee for an entirely new device. Purchasing a tracking number for a shipment of this kind would be a good idea if you choose to send it in. Otherwise dropping it off at a store is the safest route you can take.
I would suggest contacting VZW phone support on this one and running through your options. The VZW phone rep can coordinate a delivery to your local VZW store if they do not already have one in stock. You can also turn in the old device in person to rule out any non-returned device fees.

I always have to restart my iPhone to have it work.
