Working with a 3rd party router

I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 and wish to use it rather than the gateway (3801HGV) that was provided. I realize that At&t doesn't support 3rd party routers, so I thought I'd ask here.The current setup is: Gateway>Netgear>devices. The netgear is connected as a DMZ port on the gateway. They also have separate subnets. Gateway is 192.168.1.x and netgear is 192.168.2.x. The Netgear has the ports open for Xbox Live. I have 3 devices on the network that don't seem to be working correctly. Two of those devices are TV receivers (wireless and wired) and the other is an Xbox One. The wired receiver and Xbox are connected to a Gigabit switch over by the TV. The TVs freeze and say they lose connection even though they show 10-30 seconds of the channel chosen.The Xbox is having issues keeping connected to party chat. Games and other apps work properly. To work on some troubleshooting, I connected the cables that go to the TVs to the gateway and the TVs are working properly, but I would like everything to be run through the netgear. I'm not the one who plays Xbox, so I am not yet able to test. Is there anything I can do to configure the Netgear or the gateway to allow all devices to be routed through the Netgear? Any help is appreciated.

As my thoughts has said, AT&T doesn't support sending IPTV traffic through a third party router. If you have a third party router that properly implements IGMPv3, then you may be able to do so, but understand that AT&T doesn't support it. I do not believe your router falls into this category anyway, so it's a moot point.
The symptoms of running your IPTV traffic through a router that doesn't support it is exactly what you've experienced, you get picture for 10-20 seconds after a channel change, then it's lost. I'm guessing that your issue is that you have only one Cat5e cable run between where the RG and router are and where a TV Receiver and the Xbox are and you need to run traffic for both over that same wire. Options are (a) get a Wireless Receiver, (b) use two VLAN with tagging capable gigabit switches to send the tagged traffic over the single cable, then separate it out at the remote switch.

First check your Firewall is not blocking SSL port 443.
This thread contains most of the information you may need to change you PC MTU value, I don't think the Homehub MTU value can be easily changed?

Use express as a wifi extension wirelessly with 3rd party router

Hello,
I've just purchased an Airport Express. I want to use it to extend the wifi range to upstairs of my Virgin Media Superhub (downstairs).
I have read that you need to connect the two together with an ethernet cable if using a 3rd party router (not Airport Extreme or Time Capsule). I have connected the AE it to my macbook pro via airport utility wirelessly (without an ethernet cable) and the light is green and the signal seems to have slightly extended. So it seems to have worked for my MBP.
The problem is when I use it with my iPhone 5, despite showing up on the airport utility app, when I go close to the Airport express (upstairs) it doesn't improve the wifi signal at all and sometinmes lose signal completely. The airplay also works with my MBP but cuts out with the iPhone.
Is it possible to connect it wirelessly like I have done or have I just been tricked into thinking the signal has improved?
I'm currently running OS 10.8.5 on MBP and iOS 7 on the iphone 5.
I've tried to articulate this easily and I'm sure someone has already asked this but any help would be appreciated.

The trick would be to locate the Express where you need more wireless signal coverage and connect it back to the SuperHub using an Ethernet cable.
You can run an Ethernet cable up to 330 feet or 100 meters with no signal loss.
If you cannot run an Ethernet cable, you might want to take a look at a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the Ethernet signal over the AC powerlines in your home. The theory here is that you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters.
Any computer/electronics superstore will have a selection of powerline devices on hand from which to choose.
I doubt that you would notice any improvement at all if you located the Expess close the SuperHub, and it might actually interfere with the signal from the SuperHub, so that location would not be recommended.

3rd Party Router and an iMac with Airport card

Could someone assist me in setting up an older flat panel iMac 800Mhz with a airport card to a 3rd party router (Speedport W 500V). It was really easy to set up the DSL etc when connecting to an Airport Extreme base station, however I have upgraded and trying to get conencted at my parents place, which have DSL but with the Speedport W 500V modem/wireless combo - any assistance to get the two connected would be appreciated.

There may be (probably Windows only) or you need to use a web based configurator. It will depend on what the manufacturer of your router provides.
The manual which came with the router (it may be in electronic form) should provide guidance on how to configure the router via a browser.

iMovie 6 works just fine, even in 10.8. The plug-ins may not work in 10.7 and 10.8 as most use PPC code.

Buffalo WHR-600D & Youview+ 3rd Party Router

If you're looking for help testing the Disk Doctor diagnostic tool, then you'll need to work with those folks and with the particular details of the SMART data being returned from the disk you're working with; the former and contents of the SMART data can vary by vendor.
But given you're using a disk diagnostic and posting here, I'll assume that you're having I/O problems, and the "fix" is to replace the drive.
If you're working with a dual-disk Mac Mini Server with software RAID enabled, the data can be recovered from the mirror.
If you don't have a current backup and don't have mirroring enabled and need some data off the disk that's reporting SMART errors, then you may end up working with a disk data recovery package, or a data recovery firm. (I wouldn't spend much time attempting this, too, as performing disk verifications and related activities on a questionable or failing disk can reduce the chances of recovering the remaining disk data.)

Can I set "open with" for files - associate file types with a 3rd party app

I have PDF file attachments inside my OmniFocus application. When I double-tap them, they get opened in the standard Apple PDF viewer. But I have a better 3rd-party app which opens PDFs and allows me to edit them (mark them up) - I'd like the attachments to open in this app instead of the normal PDF viewer. I don't want to have to switch to the 3rd party app to open it - it's important to me that I can place comments on many, many PDFs inside of OmniFocus. So:
1) is it possible to ask the iPad to have all PDFs to open in this 3rd party app?
2) if not, is it possible to name the attachments some other extension (e.g., .xyz) and tell it to open all .xyz files with the 3rd-party PDF viewer?

When You view the features of the app in the app store, there are pictures of some of the different screens under the main description of the app. I swiped through the pictures and the fourth photo shows a screen - An image in the black box pointing to the image name - roots.jpg. I assume that arrow must have some functionality somewhere in the app. Not sure why it is greyed out. But I stress, I know nothing about the features of the app or what it is designed to do.

Trying to get a 3rd Party Router working with BT I...

Hi,
I'm trying to move away from the HHub5 on our FTTC BT Infinity connection (40Mb/s). Eventually I settled on a TP-Link WDR 3600 N600 - the flavour which is happy to talk to cable modems and take an OpenWRT install.
So far I've hooked up a BT OpenReach "white box" modem using the HHub's RJ11 lead, going from the DSL filter into the OpenReach modem's DSL socket. The modem's DSL LED lights up solid green - which I presume is good? The TP-Link router is up & running fine with OpenWRT installed, I can connect to it over WiFi and I've hooked up its WAN connection to the OpenReach modem's LAN1 socket (LAN2 is blanked out).
But whatever I put in the router's PPPoE settings I just can't get an internet connection to come up. So far I've used '[email protected] (as it's set on the HHub) and a few other suggestions from the forums including 'anything you like' @btinternet.com and @btbroadband.com - nothing seems to get the connection going.
Is there something I've missed or can anyone suggest a solution?

Sorry to answer my own question, but in case it helps anyone in the future:
I had to put my username in the username AND password fields - same details in both. I've not seen this written anywhere online, everyone says to leave the password field blank as it's unused.
So to recap - this is what got my TP-LINK WDR3600 (OpenWRT based) router working with Infinity: stick [email protected] in the PPPoE usernamd AND password fields.

AX as remote WDS with 3rd party Router

Hi
I have a third party modem/router of which I would like to expand the wireless network with a new Airport Express
The router uses 802.11g so my understanding is that the only way to extend the network is using WDS
On the router I can enable WDS and scan for available access points. The Airport only shows up if previouslòy configured to create a wireless network, but not if is joined to the router current network, I believe this is expected behaviour but not sure.
If I enable WDS and add the Airport from the router config menu the Airport continues to distribute its own IP addresses (10.1...) while the router addresses are (192.168...) and no Internet available
I am sure I am missing some configuration on the Airport side regarding enabling as a remote WDS base station, I believe I can change the AX IP addresses to match those of the router(192.168...), also I have vague memories of needed NAT config as well... Doeas anyone have instructions on what needs to be configured on the Airport?

WDS was never adopted as an official industry standard, so manufacturers were left to their own as far as the implementation of WDS.
The chances that an AirPort Express would be able to connect to a third party router using WDS settings are extremely small. Even if it might work, you will likely not be able to use any type of wireless security on the network.
Look over Apple's WDS instructions for connecting two Apple devices together to see if there might be a clue in there somewhere that you have overlooked.
Unfortunately, you may not even be able to "see" the WDS settings in AirPort Utility, since the instructions state than 802.11n devices like the new AirPort Express should not be used with WDS. Good luck!

Netgear R6300, but with the Home Hub 3.0 and 500Mbit Powerline adapters in the picture.
Modem -> HH3 -> R6300 -> Powerline -> 2 x Youview Boxes on other Powerlines.
To do this, configure the Home Hub 3.0 as 192.168.1.1, then disable its wireless and DHCP. Make sure that NAT and UPNP were enabled, and then set it to use the address 192.168.1.254 as a DMZ server.
Then configure the R6300 as the address 192.168.0.1, using the WAN IP address of 192.168.1.254, with 192.168.1.1 as the gateway and DNS server. The R6300 is then connected via WAN port to the HH3 Gigabit port.
In the R6300 settings switch on IGMP.
The above settings allow both YouView boxes to use on demand content and different streaming channels simultaneously, as well as giving the full features of the R6300 such as AC1750 wireless, network printing, and DLNA

IGMP should v3 and will be in range from 225.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255

Changing router to 3rd party router

I've been thinking about upgrading my router to a 3rd party AC wireless router so I can use more of my bandwith on my laptop and other wireless gadgets. My question is can I change it and keep all my tv services. I was told I have to use verizon's as a bridge. If I can how would I go about doing it.

Check your new router's manual for how to put it into Access Point Mode. (most new AC routers just require changing a setting, some/ those without an explicit setting will require you turn off DCHP and make sure it is plugged in via one of its LAN ports ).* All your services will remain because your Actiontec will essentially be doing all the heavy lifting. You can even leave the WiFi on the old router on but I would recommend spacing out the channels to prevent interference. (also it is not very neighbor friendly if you live in an apartment)
Bridging the Actiontec is only needed if:
You have a pretty old one and want to do a lot of torrenting/ gaming (the older ones have small NAT tables ... I think any of the ones over 100,00 should be fine for most)
You want to use some specialized features besides WiFi on your new router (its firewall, advanced management of the usb port, ect.... Access Point mode disables some of these features)
You have time to waste
You have so much heavy traffic/ devices on your router that the cpu/ ram of your new router will make a difference (unlikely)
Anyway, if you do bridge (and it is a fun little project if you have the time), you can create a double bridge which shouldn't be much harder to fix the On Demand problem**. It is option 5 of this guide: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077
*Just plugging the router in normally without putting it in Access Point Mode means all your WiFi internet traffic has to go through two routers to reach the internet. It will likely work most of the time, but it may cause unnecessary problems with devices on your network communicating to each other and also port forwarding which is important to a lot of applications.
**Only On Demand and DVR will go away with a regular bridge... Not your entire TV service. (possibly the tv guide/ on screen caller ID but I've heard from multiple people that is not the case)
