Working with ansi characters

I am a new comer to i18n .
I am using a session bean which returns a string of ansi characters(ýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýý
etc.) to the jsp. The jsp uses charset=iso-8859-1.
When I run this on weblogic 5.1 on Windows , the characters gets displayed correctly
on the browser.
When I run this on weblogic 5.1 on Solaris, The characters does not display at
all. Is it a bug with Weblogic or do I have to use i18n.
Any character that is hard coded on the jsp gets displayed perfectly fine.It is
only with the variables value that gets passed from EJB to JSP that creates a
problem.
Can anybody explain why is it so.

I have had similar problem with character encoding when working on a Solaris
enviroment,
using jdk 1.2 instead of 1.3 has worked for us but it will be good to have a
better
solution and a good explanation of this (to me) unexpected behavior....
Cheers...

Working with Chinese characters: How to paste and modify them as sentences; not as individual images?
From 2004, this is so far the most detailed answer I could find: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Adobe-Illustrator-1027/FONTS-display-problem-Adobe.htm, but is this really still the most up-to date solution?
Is it possible at all to work with Chinese characters, if I don't have the Chinese version of Illustrator? (http://www.proz.com/forum/dtp_desktop_publishing/221125-chinese_in_indesign.html)

Thanks for your reply.
I'm using Version 17.1.0 (64-bit) - basically CS6.
Operating system is Windows 8.1. Installed is the simplied Chinese language package.
I have received the text in a Word document. It contains mixed characters, something like this:
教授资料
学术背景:
博士;曾于波恩大学(Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn)、台湾师范大学、
I have tried to paste it in the two following ways:
1) to create a text box and paste the text. The result is that some of the characters are not showed correctly.
2) Paste it directly without any preparation. This result into a single "image" or group of images. I can cancel modify each character one at a time, or I can dissolve the group, but the result is the same.

• Working with Extended Characters

I have CS3 on XP SP2
In InDesign, both upper and lower case Pi show up amongst the other letters of the Greek Alphabet in fonts with extended character sets (Times or Arial). However, in Illustrator, the lower case pi is missing... it goes straight from omnicron to rho, skipping pi. I searched and finally found pi clustered with a select few "math" Greek symbols like sigma and mu. InDesign has glyph sorting options, but apparently not Illustrator. Is it possible to sort the glyphs by unicode in Illustrator to make it easier to locate certain characters?
Also, the lower case pi I found in Illustrator had no unicode and it is not rendered in many of the fonts that do in fact contain a lower case pi, under Unicode U+03C0.
Another related annoyance is that when I create a line of text (say in Times New Roman), I sometimes like to highlight the text and rapidly step through the fonts with the up and down arrows until I find one I like. This works fine in In-design and will show pink squares wherever a glyph is not supported by a font, but in Illustrator if the selected text contains certain extended characters, when I step to the next font in the list, the results can be unpredictable.

In Illustrator CS3, I found that both Arial and Times New Roman have TWO lowercase pi characters in the glyphs panel. The first one, in the math chars near the top of the glyphs panel, says "No Unicode". The second one is lower down in the glyphs panel, after the Greek, after the Cyrillic, and before the Hebrew. It has the expected Unicode value U+03C0. I'm guessing this second pi with a Unicode value probably works better when changing to other fonts.

When i do a dump(desc) on both columns I get for the reversed question mark on DB A ASCII Code 133, and for DB B I get 191.This has nothing to do with group by, from what you describe.
It seems you have a illegal character and replacement character in the db's.
How did you insert these two characters/rows and please also post actual dump output (including the query, select col, dump(col,1016), ...).
How I can I convert between the different character sets, so that my GROUP BY works as well?Firstly, you need to make sure the database character sets are capable of storing every character from your clients/apps and that you have a properly setup locale on the client side (including matching char set part of NLS_LANG).
E.g. a win-1252 client is not supported by a iso 8859-15 server, at least not if you are using or plan to use 'windows specific' characters (like the ... ellipsis).

• Problems working with Japanese characters found in filenames to determine invalid shortcuts

Hi,
I have written a script that uses test-path to query whether or not *.LNK shortcut files have valid Target Paths to determine whether or not the LNK files should be kept if invalid or contain temporary locations. This works perfectly for most shortcuts with
the exception of those with filenames in Japanese/Chinese/Cyrillic fonts.
The script is made up of the following action:-
gci "$nextdrive\Users\$env:username\AppData\Roaming\microsoft\office\recent" -Filter *.lnk | % { $shell.CreateShortcut( $_.FullName ) } | ? { ( Test-Path ( $_.TargetPath )) -eq $false -or $_.TargetPath -like '*temporary internet files*' -or $_.TargetPath
-like '*temp*'} | % { Remove-item -LiteralPath $_.FullName }
If I run the script when a file name exists in the folder above such as : 1、目录.doc.LNK
the Powershell script from the ISE returns the following error:-
"Cannot bind argument to parameter 'Path' because it is an empty string.
If I rename the .LNK file to something like 12345.doc.LNK, the powershell script successfully removes the file so I know that the issue is certainly related to the actual filename itself. Is there any sort of UTF, CJK or encoding option I need to configure
here for this to work successfully?
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
Andrew

The article Johan linked has some sample code which seems to address your issue (using Shell.Application instead of WScript.Shell). Here's a modification of your code that uses this technique:
$shellApplication = New-Object -ComObject Shell.Application
Get-ChildItem "$nextdrive\Users\$env:username\AppData\Roaming\microsoft\office\recent" -Filter *.lnk |
ForEach-Object {
try
$shortcut = $shellApplication.Namespace(0).ParseName($_.FullName).GetLink
if ((Test-Path -Path $shortcut.Path) -eq $false -or $shortcut.Path -like '*temporary internet files*' -or $shortcut.Path -like '*temp*')
Remove-Item -LiteralPath $_.FullName
catch
Write-Error -ErrorRecord $_
Alternatively, you can use the IShellLink COM class directly. Looks like someone has already written a .NET wrapper for this:

• How substrb works with multibyte characters

suppose X is a 3 byte Korean character.
What is returned by substrb(X,1,1)
I know X in hex is EA B8 B0
But I am getting substrb(X,1,1) = <blank space> ie ASCII 32

I am not sure whether you can see the following character: '기'
I found the following:
select dump('기') from dual => Typ=96 Len=3: 234,184,176
select dump(substrb('기',1,1)) from dual => Typ=1 Len=1: 32

checked v$nls_parameters and found following:
NLS_CHARACTERSET = UTF8
NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS = BYTE
NLS_LANGUAGE = AMERICAN
Let me tell you my original problem. I have a valueset that accepts 30 bytes.
It is always possible that susbstrb( ...,1,30) splits a Korean Char in the midway.
resulting an Invalid character at the end as per UTF8 encoding. As far as I know
the first byte of an UTF8 character indicates how many bytes it has.
If substrb() is returning spaces as I mentioned above then it is safe to use in the valueset. But I am not able to find any such behaviour documented.

Any tips, please?First step: read [this excellent introduction into Unicode|http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html], it will give you the basics you need to solve this problem.
How do you input and output those characters? Simply print them to the console? Or write them to a HTML file (since you mention &<something>; notation)?
"?" is normally the result when you convert a String (which is always in UTF-16 encoding in Java) to an encoding that can't represent your characters (ASCII for example).

• Problems with Chinese characters

I have a client experiencing 3 distinct problems with their Chinese-localized Fm files:
The SimSun TTF font used in the source Fm files is "uninstalling" itself. This requires reinstallation of the font on a regular basis (every few days).
The colons used in index markers in the Fm source files are not being parsed as Level1IX, Level2IX, etc. in the RoboHelp project. Instead, they are recognized as colons. In other words, the first level marker in Rh is XXXXXXXX:XXXXXXX:XXXXXXX. The same is true for the semicolons.
The conversion settings for the Chinese project do not allow for mapping to individual CSS elements and classes. This means that all of the formatting is controlled via the supplemental CSS generated from the FrameMaker formatting. IOW, the formatting all uses the class="FM_ definitions.
Has anyone had success working with Chinese characters in a FrameMaker to RoboHelp workflow (either linking or importing)?
Anyone else seen any of these issues in Chinese or any other fonts?
I'm thinking the first two issues are likely due to the TrueType font used, but can't find an Adobe OTF SimSans font to use as a replacement.
However, the lack of mapping capability in the conversion process is a stumper...perhaps due to the double-byte font itself.
Any thoughts or solutions are greatly appreciated by my client (whose deadline passed yesterday!)
-Matt

I dont think you can print chinese chars at the console on window
to print the character codes to the console use someting like that
char [] chars = request.getParameter("whatever").toCharArray()
for(each chars){
System.out.println((int)chars);
then check if you got the corresponding chinese char

• Tag Query with Special Characters in Tag Name not working

Hello-
We are on SAP xMII 12.0 sp8.6, connecting to Honeywell's PHD. We are doing Tag Queries, and all is working well, except when there are special characters in the Tag Name (+, /, \) We have attempted to do the Encoding of the tag name, such as as is returned from the function xmlencodename and also tried URL Encoding.
Here is our tag which returns nothing.
82TK1INV.OCTANE_R+M/2
We have also tried these encoded versions, still to no avail:
82TK1INV.OCTANE_R%2BM%2F2
82TK1INV.OCTANER_M_2
Any help on how to return the values with special characters in the tag name would be very helpful!
thanks,
Paul Mazeika

To Chianti's question of why can't/shouldn't MII work with those bizarre tag names...
Actually, there are a number of reasons:
1) It's a poor design practice to use characters like that in tag names, regardless of the underlying system. That type of information is best assigned to the tag description, not the tag name. I've even seen idiots put leading spaces on tag names...figure that one out!
2) MII uses XML extensively, and XML's syntax rules dictate what is and is not acceptable for XML element and attribute names, and many of these special characters are not permitted.
3) Usage of characters in tags that also represent mathematical operators greatly complicate the parsing and processing of expressions that involve tag names
In general, it reminds of the story of the guy who walks into the doctor, bangs his fist against a specific spot on his head, and says "Doc, it hurts when I do this", to which the doctor responds, "so don't do that".
So, Don't Do That.

I've worked with data merge before in English and it work perfectly.
Any Ideas? is this a bug? software constrains?

Try this:
Save your file as a UTF-16 BE (Big Endian) file.
Import showing options in ID. I'm on a PC, choose the below regardless.
Should look like this in ID.
Apologies to Farsi-speaking people everywhere. I pulled some text out of a Farsi text file to make up this tab-delimited merge file. I don't speak it, so it is likely servely non-sensical.

• Using SQLDriverConnect with special characters in password fails, same info with ODBC (Oracle instant client) works fine

Hi,
on a windows 2008 machine that has the Oracle instant client 11_1 installed (11.01.00.06) i am calling SQLDriverConnect in the following way:
std::string str = "Driver={Oracle in instantclient11_1};Dbq=//10.10.101.66:1521/orcl;;Uid=myUser;pwd=a;b";
odbcRc = SQLDriverConnect(hdbc, NULL, (SQLTCHAR*)str.c_str(), str.size(), (SQLTCHAR*)szConnStrOut, 1024, &cbConnStrOut, SQL_DRIVER_NOPROMPT)) == SQL_ERROR);
as long as the password contains no special chars (namely semicolon) it works fine. but when I try to use special chars in the password It stops working, with an invalid username/password error.
State: 28000 Native error: 1017 Message: [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
i tried different variations of adding " (\") over the password, over the entire pwd=a;b or braces { but nothing seems to work.
the thing is that using ODBC works! what I did was:
open ODBC, go to System DSN tab, add "Oracle in instantclient11_1", then fill the following information:
Data source name: Anything
TNS Service Name: //10.10.101.66:1521/orcl
User ID: myUser
then i press test connection, enter the password "a;b"
and it works!
I cannot figure out what's my problem.
Thanks,
Roy.

I've created your test table in my Oracle database using this extra character and I'm able to describe it properly.
SQL> desc test;
Name Null? Type
ATTIVITÀ VARCHAR2(40)
My character set being used is:
SQL> select * from v$nls_parameters;
NLS_CHARACTERSET
WE8ISO8859P15
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET
AL16UTF16
NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS
BYTE
So as long as it doesn't work for you in your native Oracle database I don't think it would work with DG4ODBC. So yes, it would be best to log a service request so that the Oracle database support can check out the NLS issue.
Edited by: kgronau on Sep 28, 2011 9:21 AM
To be complete here the describe of the MySQL table native and using DG4ODBC:
mysql> create table TEST (attività Varchar(40));
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
mysql> desc TEST;
---------------------------------------------------+
| Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra |
---------------------------------------------------+
| attività | varchar(40) | YES | | NULL | |
---------------------------------------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.2.0 Production on Wed Sep 28 09:20:17 2011
SQL> desc "gateway"."TEST"@MYSQL_DG4ODBC_EMGTW_1122_DB;
Name Null? Type
attività VARCHAR2(80)
So in general it should work.

• OBPM - Problem exporting to CSV (for use in Excel) with special characters?

Hi All,
I am wondering if anyone has found a good solution to a problem I am experiencing with OBPM's OTB export function.
Our application is required to be bilingual for English and French, however we've noticed that when the user is in French-display-mode, and exports their worklist to CSV, the french characters are garbled when viewed in Excel.
We've tracked the problem down to be that OBPM encodes the CSV file as UTF-8, and Excel default is ANSI. This mismatch causes the garble.
Has anyone out there found a way to set the encoding type, or otherwise overcome this issue? We are using OBPM version 10.3.2
Thanks!
Steps to recreate:
1. Open the OBPM workspace
2. Click "Settings" in the top right corner
3. Select the "Display" tab, and change the language to French, click save.
4. Notice your column names now appear in French. Export your worklist to CSV using the "Output options" icon
5. open the resulting file in Excel, notice that any specail characters (accented e's for example) are not garbled.

Hi Sharma,
We seem to be the only two people on the forum using multiple languages!
I have contacted Oracle support about the issue and am awaiting their reply as we speak.. We have a workaround that we can use, but our users are not fans of it, and would like to see a better solution.
Our workaround is simply to open the CSV file in notepad++ and re-save the file with ANSI encoding.
You mentioned Oracle support had provided you with 3 fixes, were these code-fixes or workarounds? I am wondering if perhaps one of those would work for us..

EDIT:In the glxinfo command its say 'OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc'. Why?
I don't really know it but "Unknown chipset" sounds like the card may be so new that it is not yet supported, even in testing. "softpipe" means that it is using software rendering instead of the actual 3d hardware.
It probably will work with newer git versions from mesa and xf86-video-ati and maybe the radeon branch of the kernel. All is found in the inofficial [radeon] repository:
