Working with Cannon 5D Footage. Compress or Raw?

Just started working with both Cannon 5D Mark III and editing in Premiere. I know with FCP it was best to compress to Apple ProRes to work with files (even though they doubled in size). Any compression setting suggestions for working with 5D footage without a loss of quality and/or stuttering play back in Premiere?

You can work with the 5D footage natively in Premiere, if your hardware can keep up with the big demand on the CPU.  I am on a MacPro 8 Core system, and I have no trouble playing back the H.264 from the 5D in full resolution on CS6.  When I worked in CS5.5, I did have to transcode to ProRes first, since CS5.5 on the Mac did not play H.264 very well. Create a matched sequence by dropping a 5D clip on the "New Sequence" icon.
If you are on a slower machine, try reducing the playback resolution to get real-time playback, although that doesn't always work well with the high CPU intense material such as H.264.  If all else fails, go back to your original workflow and transcode to ProRes and you will have no problem.
Good luck.

HELP PLEASE!  I am working with GH4 4k footage in adobe preimere and the computer keeps freezing... any ideas?

Thanks for your response.  I'm sorry for the lack of details, but posting a question on this forum is completly new to me, so I guess I am learning how it works.
I have to be honest, I am a novice to video editing, but I am here to learn so I will provide all the info I know and please let me know if it is enough...
I filmed my first feature film on a Panasonic GH4. We filmed in 4k (compressed files).  I am about 900 GB of total files for all the footage.  I am currently editing on a 17' Toshiba Satellite i7 with 750 GB of space and I believe 8 gb of ram.  All of the footage for the film is not on the computer, but stored on a 1 TB external hardrive (Rugged Lacie is the name of the hard drive).  I am using a usb 3.0 from the hard drive to the computer.
I actually was able to get through about 17 mins of edits for the film before I started to experiencing the computer completely freezing up on me.  I tried using a different hard drive, and same issue.  A friend mentioned it might just be the computer is not powerful enough to edit all the footage, but he wasn't for sure considering the computer is less than a year old and is on the higher end for a toshiba.
I am requesting advice on how to continue editing the film without the computer crashing if that is even possible with using the same computer.  If not what would be my options?
    Thank you!

  • I'm working with MXF XAVCi footage shot in S-Log on a Sony FS7

I'm working with MXF XAVCi footage shot in S-Log on a Sony FS7 - Can anyone tell what the optimum sequence settings are for premiere pro CC. I'm editing then doing a round trip into DaVinci. Currently settings are AVC - Intra 100 1080p.
    Many thanks

Frankly, your best bet would probably be to recapture from the source into FCP. Alternatively you could export the files from the Avid directly as Quicktime Movie files instead of taking the raw MXF's.
Options for working directly with the MXF's include:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/MXFImportQ_OSX.html ( USD 60 )
    http://mxf4mac.com/products/mfx4qt/#mxf4qt_import ( EURO 399 )
    http://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac/index.htm ( USD 195 )
but I have no info as to whether these would enable you to work directly with an AVID MXF

  • Hi. Quick question I am working with Panasonic GH3 footage and it is playing back in slow motion?

Hi. Quick question I am working with Panasonic GH3 footage shot using .MOV wrapper with their IPB 50mbps and All-Intra 72MBPS codecs and they are playing back in slow motion in Sg CC. The footage works fine in PP CC and I have no clue on how to fix it. Is this a bug or do I a have a setting wrong some place?

Yes it turns red this is silly PP and AE have no problem with playback for these codecs. So it is indeed Sg not handling the codec correctly and not my system?
What if I transcoded it to something else other than the previous what would you reccommend?
I was going to transcode to ProRes but 5DtoRGB does not work on Windows with GH3 codecs.
What is the correct time warp seting under clip properties? I screwed with it and forgot the default setting.
Is there a way to reset Sg back to defaults settings globaly. I tried to many settings trying to fix the playback and may have left something in the wrong state.
    Thanks...

  • Working with 4K Red-Footage

    Hey together,
maybe it is an easy thing, but I don't get it...
I am working with 4K Red Footage into a HD-Sequence.
Is it possible to automatically resize the clips to see them full frame?
Otherwise I have to manually resize every clip in my sequence to 50%.
    Thanks!

Select clips in the timeline, right-click and choose 'Scale to Frame Size'.
WARNING: This option entails some consequences in Dynamic Link scenario, not crucial though. You just need to be aware of. In particular, when you replace a clip with a dynamically linked AE composition, and the 'Scale to Frame Size' option had been enabled, After Effects creates a nested precomp out of that clip instead of just a layer, and the Collapse Transformation switch becomes enabled for that precomp in a master comp. If you understand, what all the above is about, take a note. If not, safely ignore until you're facing some issues (e.g. After Effects warning pops up on an attempt to apply the Warp Stabilizer effect etc.)

  • Working with 720p HD footage

    Hello,
I have a Panasonic HVX200 and shoot quite a bit of footage in the 720pn format (30p). The footage cuts beautifully in FCP in a 720 timeline also works well in DV format (once you resize and render.)
I recently was trying to create a DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4 and ran into issues with the 720p format. I tried a number of export formats from FCP and then compressed in BitVice. The only one I could get to work with any success was the DV – NTSC 3:2 format (anamorphic). When I tried to put the HD footage into a 4x3 timeline, DVD studio pro did not like that.
The 3:2 workaround seemed to work, but there must be an easier way to do this.
    Any suggestions.
    Thanks..

Instead of using Apple's QuickTime Player, I would suggest looking into another player, such as VLC Player, or MediaPlayer Classic HC, both of which are free, and both of which have a very full set of CODEC's included in them.
For the best possible Audio, it would be best to choose PCM/WAV as the Audio CODEC. This is almost totally universal, and unlike all MPEG Audio (including AC3), is uncompressed. The file will be a bit larger (Audio does not take up as much space, as does the Video), but should give better quality, and not require additional CODEC's for users to play the file w/ Audio. This might not be an option in all possible Export/Share schemes.
For either PCM/WAV, or AC3 Audio, this will be set from the Audio Tab in the Export/Share settings. Remember setting the Encoding for the Audio might not be available in all formats, so just check that Audio Tab in the settings dialog screen (usually under Advanced).
As for DD Audio, you can set the Audio Encoding to AC3, wich is Dolby Digital, but that option might not be available with all possible Export/Share formats, so it gets down to an "it depends." This will be stereo (2-channel) Audio.
PrE cannot Encode to DD 5.1 SS (6-channel), as it lacks that Encoder. Even PrPro needs the Minnetonka Audio SurCode Encoder plug-in (US$300 option) to do DD 5.1 SS Export.
    Good luck,

  • Working with 1440 x1080 footage?

I'm going to be working with some footage shot at 1440 x1080 (interlaced I believe) with an AVCHD camera. I will have other footage shot at 1920 x 1080 that needs to be edited with it.
    1. Anyone know why a camera would be designed to shoot footage at 1440 x 1080 instead of 1920 x 1080?
    2. Is it better quality wise to let the footage scale up to 1920 x 1080 or should it just be downconverted to work in a 1280 x 720 sequence?
    Thanks.

    1. Cost of the sensors.
    2. Keep it 1920 x1080.
1440 x 1080 is typical of HDV, 1920 x 1080 is typical for AVCHD. They are actually the same resolution , only the PAR, picel aspect ratio differs.
    1440 x 1080 with a PAR of 1.333 is the same as 1920 x 1080 with a PAR of 1.0.
Google is your friend if you want to know more about PAR.

  • CS4 working with cannon raw (.CR2) extremely slow

      Hello,
I am hopeing there is some one that can help me or point me in the right direction. I am useing Photoshop cs4 extended on a windows xp home edition. When I use CS4 to open a raw file from a canon 50D CS4 slows to a crawl, and by crawl I mean it freezes when I try to shift the photo in any direction. It stays frozen for as long as 30 to 45 seconds, then will adjust the photo. If I aply a corection such as brightness useing the adjustment brush. it can take 30 or more seconds before cs4 is ready to do anything. I noticed that it will max out my processor ( pentium 4 3.01 Ghz with hyperthreading  ) for the 30 plus seconds it takes to get ready to do anything. I understand that my system is not the best, but I feel it should not be haveing the major problems that it does. I will include some more info to try and help any one that wishes to help. system: windows xp home with all the latest updates. Intel motherboard with intel 3.01 processor with hyperthreading. 2 gigs of PC 2700 ram. windows swap file and CS4 scratch file (cache) are on a second hard drive. 1st hard drive contains aplication files and most of the photos. both hard drives are defragmented on a weekly basis. I keep my system running with just the basic files for the operating system, and when online I only have a firewall running on top of the browser. I have upgraded cs4 with the latest updates. As I mentioned, I know my system is not state of the art, but feel it should do a lot better then it is. CS4 does pretty good when opening large .PSD files and does well with most actions etc.  Thanks in advance for any help that is offered : )

  • Working with Slow motion (240fps) Sony F55 Raw mxf files

I'm working on a project that uses both 25p files and 240fps slow motion files from a Sony F55.
The problem is that when I add the slow motion files to my file list everything gets media pending, even the normal 25p files. If I delete the the slow motion files from the list the normal 25p gets back to normal behaviour, withous Media Pending.
It seems that Premiere Pro cannot work very good with Sony RAW 240fps files. Is that I known bug? Is there a way to fix it?

  • Using avi files with DVpal. Working with screen grab footage.

    Hi.
I am currently editing some short little promo's that mix DVpal footage with .avi footage. The .avi footage are screen grabs of someone navigating a website, and are designed as cutaways to illustrate a ptc.
However when they are rendered out on the timeline, the text from the website that is in the screen grab video becomes too distorted/(rasterized i think), essentially unreadable. I was planning on some degradation, but didn't realize it would destroy the image so much.
I have tried exporting/converting the .avi files to certain .mov formats but all with essentially the same problem.
Does anybody know a work around solution to help solve this problem. Or is the best way to redo the screen grabs as .movs with the relevant settings, and can anyone recommend some software for this job.

I think the problem is more based in the fact that you're working in DV. Can you work in a higher quality format?

  • Working with Screen Capture Footage in FCP

I purchased Snapz Pro X to record screen capture footage for a project I am doing. After recording the .mov files I imported them into FCP and edited together a sequence along with music and titling. Unfortunately in the output video the footage looks compressed and fuzzy. I have the project resolution set to an HD setting, but I'm still getting a fuzzy looking screen shot.
What is the proper way to import screen captures into FCP and how do I export them without loosing resolution.
Thank you ahead of time to everyone who has any input?

    Hi -
When you saved your SnapZ Pro X movies, a window comes up allowing you to choose the video codec to use when saving the file. What settings did you use?
Also, have you rendered the timeline?
    Thanks

  • Working with Red camera footage

I brought a frame from some Red footage into Photoshop CS6, and I used the Spot Healing Brush to paint out something.  I added something else back to that frame, now need to bring that footage into After Effects CS6.  When I bring in the resulting PSD into AE, the color is completely wrong.  There is no option to Export or Save as REDCODE RAW, so...... ?

I would check on the Red forum for color settings for your workflow.
The other option would be to transcode the footage to something other than RedCode RAW and go from there with a different color space.

  • Working with Field Based Footage in Color

    Hi,
I have a film shot on mini DV that is interlaced, when I send it to color to grade then back to FCP is seems to have lost a field.
In the end I will master it as progressive, but Id rather merge fields than loose one all together.
waht is the best workflow in this situation?
    cheers
    Alex

Before you bring the material into FCP (let alone color) convert it to ProResLT progressive. Use Frame Controls deinterlace set to better.
You now have 10 bit 4:2:2 progressive files
    Do your edit in FCP.
Send the resulting files to Color

  • FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?

    What is a raw file?
A raw file is the unprocessed light data that was captured by your camera sensor. The only settings on your camera that apply to this file are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This means that any settings you may have applied to the file, such as white balance, or black and white effects, have no effect. Because this sensor data is raw, it must be processed or baked into an actual image file, that's where the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in comes in.
    What is Adobe Camera Raw?
ACR interprets the raw data and makes image information out of it. But every camera has a unique sensor and thus has a unique form of raw file. Even though camera manufactures may use the same file extension each time (e.g. Nikon raw files are always .NEF), each camera model has a different way of storing information. Because of this, we must continually update ACR for new cameras. As we add new cameras to the list (over 300 now) we update our published list of supported cameras. Additionally, with the changes to ACR, newer releases will not always be compatible with older versions of Photoshop Elements.
So, will the my raw files work with Photoshop Elements?
So if you are wondering if your camera is supported by ACR or will work in Photoshop Elements, first check this list:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Once you know whether your camera is supported by ACR and by which version, check this list to see whether your version of Photoshop Elements supports that version of ACR or later:
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
If your version of Photoshop Elements should open raw files from your camera, make sure you have the latest version of ACR installed. Go to Help > Updates to install the latest ACR release.
You can also manually download and install ACR updates:
    Macintosh
    Windows
What if my camera is not compatible with my version of Photoshop Elements?
Supposing you have a camera that came out after the release of a newer version of Photoshop Elements, so that your version of Elements is no longer recieving updates, you have two basic options:
Purchase the latest version of Photoshop Elements that supports your camera.
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Camera Raw plug-in). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.
Where are all of the tools and options that I've seen available in tutorial books and videos?
Photoshop Elements has fewer tools and options than it's parent Photoshop. These differences are documented here:
Adobe Camera Raw differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

  • Working with Corrupted Footage

    Hi there,
I am trying to work with RED/R3D footage that appears to have been corrupted during transfer (apparently this may be a problem with USB3).
In the affected footage artifacts appear on the screen for a frame at a time (please find screencap attached). When trying to export this footage, some of it exports successfully but on some of it I receive the message “error compiling movie: unknown error”.
Since most of the footage will be very difficult to re-shoot I was hoping that it would be possible to cut out the corrupted frames, frame by frame, (I have tried this on some scenes and it appears to be virtually unnoticeable but perhaps this will cause problems down the line?). However since Premiere will not allow me to export some sections of affected footage I am concerned that some of it just cannot be exported (or perhaps would require different software to do so).
If anyone can please clarify for me how to solve/get around this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Thanks very much for the tip.
If anyone has any ideas about the “error compiling movie: unknown error” problem I would be very appreciative to hear. Thanks!
