Working with Canon 5D standard definition video

I'm facing an odd situation.
Just started editing a documentary shot with a Canon 5D camera. The picture looks great. The only thing is, the cameraman decided that this is a video and he didn't need to shoot HD! I don't know why he thought that, since the main reason people use the Canon 5D is to get a full HD frame. Anyhow, I've been presented now with hours of brilliant interviews that can't be redone, all with a frame size of 640x480 running at 25 frames per second. I need to figure out how to edit these and create a broadcast master at the end. 25fps is not the issue, it's the frame size and video compression that I need to deal with.
The Canon 5D generates Quicktime files with an H.264/Mpeg4 compression. I need to convert these files to a format better suited to editing and mastering for broadcast. An HD master is, of course, impossible, but 640x480 is even smaller than the standard 720x576 frame size that one gets on regular standard definition PAL video.
I found a transcoding plugin for the Canon 5D, but it only works with files shot in the HD format, which get converted to Apple ProRes in the FCP's 'log and transfer' window. I've been unable to find any instructions on how to work with standard definition files.
I imported the native H.264 files into the FCP, and found, of course, that I can play the video quite smoothly as it is. There's even a timeline setting that allows me to edit without rendering. But I'm afraid that if I work with the native files, I won't be able to master them to tape at the end.
Any pointers on how best to go about this would be most useful!

Try using Compressor to convert to the standard PAL frame size using DV50. Good luck and whip the cameraperson.

  • Using 4:2:2 Uncompressed standard definition video with FCE 4.0

    Hi all,
I'm preparing to get some old Super 8 Film converted to Digital Video. I'm looking at a transfer that ends up as 4:2:2 Uncompressed standard definition video on a USB Hard Drive. Has anyone had any experience with this format using FCE 4.0.1?
    I'm running a MAcBook Pro, OS 10.6.2, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 4GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Cheers,
    Doug

    Not with FCExpress.
You didn't say what format/codec you plan on using, but FCE works with DV-NTSC and Apple Intermediate Codec, both of which are 4:1:1. And both are compressed. (FCE also works with DV-PAL which is 4:2:0 but Belize is not a PAL country.)
You could do 4:2:2 in Apple ProRes, but you will need FCPro to work with that.
If you are using FCExpress, then I'd suggest having your supplier provide you with QuickTime files using Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • How to get Camera RAW / Photoshop CS5 to work with Canon 100D?

How to get Camera RAW / Photoshop CS5 to work with Canon 100D? I don't want to by this product again and again...

In what way is ACR not working in Bridge?  Is there no right-click Open in Camera Raw available from Bridge, or there is, but the ACR version is less than ACR 6.7.1 or what exactly is the issue?
Also, if you open Photoshop and do Help / About Plug-ins / Camera Raw, is ACR missing from the list, or if not, what version does it say is installed?
You might also want to describe what methods you have tried to correct the issue, since saying you've tried what you've seen posted and they didn't work, isn't really much to go on.

Hi, I am working with CS6 Design Standard for Mac, I bought from Adobe a DVD with the Software. I installed it already on my mac book. Soon I wanna buy a second computer for my work. When I bought the software I was told that it is possible to install the software on a second computer. But I also read lately that I will only be allowed to work with one computer. I want to work on both of my computers without de/installing and de/activating the software every time. Is this possible? Thank you!!

You should be able to install the products on two computers as long as they are not running at same. Also the platform should be MAC.

  • What version of Elements will work with Canon Print Studio Pro

What version of Elements will work with Canon Print Studio Pro?

I tried this step but it did not work. I have a Mac YosemiteOS 10.10.1. I copied to plug in files from Canon Print Studio Pro. Open canon utilities, open print studio pro, open CS4 folder and copied files CNPSPP101.plugin and CNPSPP102.plugin (not there is also a folder called CS5 but it has the fame plugin files)
I copy these files and then go to Photoshop Elements 13 and paste these files in Support File folder in Plug - ins and also did in folder Optional Plug-ins.
I then open Photoshop Elements 13 and hit Automation tools but Canon Pro Studio option is not there.
Can you provide more details on where I might be going wrong.
I put in a trial version of Elements 12 and have no problem. I just can't find where to purchase Elements 12 so I do not lose it in 30 days. Know where I can  purchase?

  • Standard definition - videos

I would like to know if standard definition is 720p or lower.  I just download an free movie from itunes using the digital copy code and would like to know SD if it is 720p.
    I know HD is 720p or 1080p.
    Thanks

When "Prefer Standard-definition Videos" is enabled, correct it only copies SD videos. However you don't need this enabled if you have purchased all SD videos from iTunes or recorded DVR to Mac/PC and used a convertor to transfer to iPhone.
Apple sells HD videos in a separate category for those not wanting to purchase 3GB HD movies or 1.5GB HDTV shows (variance in time length).

  • Working with Still Images in a Video

Let's say I'd like to use a RAW still Image from my 40D Canon, which is 3888 x 2592, a 3:2 aspect ratio. I'm inserting it into a HD video, 720p, at a 16:9 ratio (1.0). I'd like to keep it large initially so I can pan or zoom in or out as desired. What's my workflow?: If I "Scale to Frame" it fits top to bottom but not laterally. If I show it in the monitor at 100%, it's much too large (but good for panning etc). How do you folks handle this, to work with the Ken Burns effects, keeping the frame aspect ratio correct, and keeping image quality good?
    kdoc

That helps to a great extent: thanks Bill and everyone. A few thoughts and questions in follow up. I don't see under preferences anything about Scale to Frame Size (where is it in PrP/CS5?), but it does seem to come in by default not scaled. By right clicking the clip on the timeline on a PC I get the option to check or uncheck that possibility.
I also don't see Effects/Motion/Scale: where is that?
If I want to show my entire photo, as I originally worked it in Photoshop, I guess I need to then check Scale to Frame Size. And of course it doesn't fill the 16:9 aspect ratio laterally, even in landscape orientation, certainly not in portrait orientation. Do you leave it as is, with black margins, and/or do you crop to 16:9 in Photoshop before bringing it in the PrP to eliminate the black margins? (Bill has addressed this in his previous  post). I'm gathering that if you don't want any black to show, a 3:2 DSLR Image within on a High Def (say 1280x720) video requires cropping. Do you folks crop in PS when resizing--you can't batch that. I see that Bill sometimes puts a new background behind, to eliminate the black margins.
Where in PS do you set pixel aspect ratio: I can't find it, though I only looked in PSx64, and not in PS x32? Actually I don't think one needs to answer this in PrP CS5: the image seems to come into PrP with the correct aspect ratio--for my Canon 40D RAW images it comes in at 3888x2592 (1.0) if I'm editing for a 1280x720 HD DSLR. I can convert my image to a PSD file in PS as Bill suggests (TIFF will work too).
I'm thinking that the new CS5 with Mercury Playback and 64 bits may handle these larger RAW images fine--but time will tell.
I don't quite get what Scale to Frame Size does (it seems to keep the height at full frame, and the frame aspect ratio constrained). or (in the dropdown) Fit vs. 50% or 100% does? Is it changing the actual image dimensions or just those which show up on screen? For example, I made an image in PS exactly 1280 x720 and brought it into a PrP video project which was also 1280x720, but the image overlapped at 100%. It fit the frame perfectly at "Fit" (from the dropdown).???
Remember that in PS, you can handle both portrait and landscape images for resizing with File--Automate--Fit Image. Just use the largest of the two pixel dimensions for both height and width. Or use Image Processor.
    Thanks all

  • Working with Canon XF files. Do they work nativley with PP6 or PPCC at all?

I want to start using PP6 - PPCC for all of my work going forward. I mostly with canon XF files on a mac book pro. Having done a number of tests it seems PP just doesn't work with them at all Ive tried importing via prelude, directly and  via Canon XF utility. I have tried this in a number of configurations.
It  doesn't allow you to view more then 30 seconds of footage in the browser. So whats the problem,  a bug? Is there a fix?
Is it worth changing over ? withthe hassel of transcodes its so much less attractive.
    Any advice welcome.
    Many thanks.

Many people are working heavily with the MXF out of Canon rigs and doing fine. Some are having issues. A few seem to be dead in the water with that codec/wrapper. So I'd guess it's a combination of hardware & software configurations & interactions that Adobe hasn't completely nailed down. So ... you might want to snoop around here, though do remember, the ones who post most often and most ... decidedly ... will be those with problems, and those who are just working away ... don't post a lot.
Still, the more of you with those cams & footage posting here, the more they'll learn about the issues there and the better they'll be able to get this handled.
I'd recommend posting your entire hardware/software/processing info here ...
-OS/CPU/RAM/GPU/vRAM specific to the dot and with video driver listed also.
-Disc layout of programs, cache, projects, & footage ... and connections with any externals.
-ALL programs & plugins within those programs that touch the files, any effects. (Yea, I realize when you can't go more than 30 seconds "effects" are pretty nil ... )
    -Camera/s used & original codecs/wrappers, frame rates & size.
All this can be of use to puzzling out what's going on. For some, just moving forward OR backwards in video driver has fixed it. For others something else has worked. And a certain number are simply ... frustrated.

  • Working with Canon 5D MarkII H.264 Footage in Final Cut Studio - 5, Not 6

I'm new to this whole posting thing, but I'm hoping I can get some help. I'm just now starting to try to edit video footage from my Canon 5D Mark II in Final Cut, but I do not have FCP6, I have FCP5. I'm starting to realize this may be a problem, as it does not seem to have any sort of 1080 30p setting for video.
So...what I've done so far is to down convert to 720 p30 (I guess) using MPEG Streamclip, and then work with it that way. But I'm losing a lot of nice information, right? (Wrong?)
Obviously, I'm very new to the whole HD thing, so please go easy on me. I'm just hoping that there is some way that I can edit the lovely 1080 30p footage in Final Cut Studio Version 5, and then output a looped 10 minute video via DVD Studio Pro.
    Anyone??
    I appreciate any guidance.
    - dawn

Strangely, that is just not one of the options that shows up for me - I get the huge list, but no 1080p 30. In fact, no 30p anywhere to be found except for the 720 p30.
I wonder if there is something I can download?
I keep running into posts telling me I have to have version 6 - there MUST be something I can do in 5!! I hope, I hope...

  • Please recommend a tapeless camcorder to use with Apple iMovie5, standard definition 4:3.

I'm still using Apple iMovie5 and a Power PC to make standard definition 4:3
aspect ratio DVD's for industrial training purposes. Historically, I've used
miniDV camcorders to aquire the raw content. I want to go tapeless, but still keep
everything else the same. Any specific suggestions for camcorders that aquire in
SD 4:3 with files compatible with iMovie5 (like .mov files)?? In other words, I
need to replace the miniDV capture process and go with something that easily
imports into iMovie 5, std def, with 4:3.  Help please!!!
Thanks! Also, I do not need a real high end camera.  Something under $600 preferable.

  • Working with Canon 7D

Does video from the 5D or 7D work nicely with FCP 6? Are there any issues with working with it? Anyone have any opinions on the video the camera produces in general?
    thanks.

I do, but what I think is good other people don't. I loved the grainy look of THE HURT LOCKER, and hated the crystal clarity of AVATAR (well, I hated AVATAR on every level). But a lot of people want crystal clarity and no grain. I don't care if there's grain...I want STORY.
The Canon DSLRs shoot cool looking video because they have lenses that give you great depth of field. But it is a GOP format with limited color space, and not the best to color correct. But it is full raster 1920x1080 vs DVCPRO HDs 1280x1080. But I could give a rats patootie about FULL HD full raster. Anamorphic looks fine, I don't miss those scan lines. I like the color space of DVCPRO HD, even though it is 8-bit. Yes, it is softer than the Canon 5D, and even the XDCAM cameras. But I DESPISE ultra sharp HD. TOO good. I like soft...film is soft. Crystal clear HD brings out all the blemishes.
But, I people ridicule me for liking the softness of DVCPRO HD over the sharp, full raster of XDCAM or DSLR. Whatever. I mainly care about story. Without story, beautiful sharp video is completely uninteresting.

  • Sudden problem getting CD-LabelPrint to work with Canon ip5200R

The last time I successfully printed a disc label on my Canon ip5200R was in November last year - until then, I'd had no problems printing from a couple of different iMacs & my MacBook Air. I have recently tried to print a new label, but am receiving the message: "The Paper Settings are not correct. Please check the paper size, magnification ratio, and the paper orientation. To set the paper settings, please click on "Settings". To cancel printing, please click "Cancel"." All of my settings are correct! I used to get a message that advised me to check the "Quality & Media" settings, where I could make further adjustments (eg, tick "greyscale printing"), but I can no longer access this option.
A Google search revealed that others have had similar problems - solutions suggested included updating the software. I was using CD LabelPrint v.1.3. I have installed v.1.7, but the problem persists. (When I installed v.1.8, the message indicated that there was no printer installed that would work with the program!) (I uninstalled the previous versions correctly by deleting the folder from Applications as well as from Preferences in the Library.) I have attempted to print from 4 different Macs - three of them are running Mac OS 10.5.8 and one is running 10.4.11- no luck with any of them! The only change that is consistent between them since November last year is that they have all received software updates for their operating systems. I am wondering whether something in these updates is now interfering with CD LabelPrint?
I am frustrated with the amount of time this has taken so far, and so am hoping that someone will please be able to help me rectify the problem.
    - Merrilly

    Hi there,
I have v1.60 of CD LabelPrint on my 10.5.8 VM and it is working fine. It also has all the Apple updates installed so I don't think this would be the cause.
I also have v1.80 on 10.6 and it is working fine as well.
The version 1.60 on 10.5.8 generates a pop-up as soon as the Print icon is pressed. This takes you to the Page Setup menu for CD LabelPrint to ensure you have the 'Format for' set to the iP5200R and the 'Paper Size' set to 'CD Tray C'. With these selected and the OK button pressed, the next warning window appears regarding the Quality & Media settings.
If you manually open Page Setup in your CD LabelPrint, does it have the iP5200R set as the printer and the CD Tray C set for the paper size?
Regarding the v1.8 and the error, this version was released to add support for Snow Leopard. Since you have to use the CUPS v10.26 driver on Snow Leopard (the v4.8.3 driver for Leopard cannot be used on SL) then maybe the same driver would have to be installed on Leopard in order for CD LabelPrint to function?
