Working with family DVD in iMovie

Hi all,
I need to import and old family DVD into iMovie and then do some edits and then create a video to save and later stream on apple tv and iPad.
BTW: now I am on imovie 11 and ML 10.8.5 - BUT I also have access to mavericks and new iMovie if that is better - please let me know.
Q: What is the best way to import/convert the dvd into a format that iMovie can easily import (without importing/and converting it a second time)
Also, what is the best format to save as a video file for howing on apple tv and also ipad?

Q: What is the best way to import/convert the dvd into a format that iMovie can easily import (without importing/and converting it a second time)
A:To import/convert dvd to iMovie, you can refer to the tutorial below: http://www.iorgsoft.com/DVD-Ripper/import-dvd-to-imovie.html.
Q: what is the best format to save as a video file for howing on apple tv and also ipad?
A:

    Insert DVD
    Open Disk Utility
Select disck and "New Image" and saved to desktop
    Opened iMovie

Here is a way to do it that should work for you.

  • Working with iPhoto pix in iMovie '11

Two questions on working with iPhoto pictures in iMovie '11:
Is there a way to control the sort order of pictures in an iPhoto event in iMovie '11? Or, looking at it from a different perspective, how does iMovie '11 sort photos when I'm browsing an iPhoto event? iMovie has the photos in a different order than iMovie and I can't figure out how it's determinig sort order. I'd like the photos in iMovie to use the same sort order that iPhoto uses. The next best option would be to have iMovie sort by photo name. Just as background, the sort order I set in iPhoto is "By Title." Before import into iPhoto, I changed the titles of some photos that I know will not be used in iMovie so that they sort to the end of an event.
How do I navigate from one iPhoto event to another? I must be missing something basic...when I need to move from one event to another, I have to select another iPhoto choice (such as "Photos" or "Last Import") and then select "Events" again.
    Thanks.

For Question #1, an album definitely helped. In iPhoto, I highlighted all 19 events in this particular library, selected File>New Album, and set the sort order by title. Back in iMovie, the list of photos was sorted the same.
Regarding Question #2, I figured out why iMovie was acting the way it was. I had increased the height of the photo viewer/browser pane so that the source list collapsed to a single drop-down. So the source list that normally looks like this:
    ...became this:
I don't think iMovie is set to allow you to go back to the list of all events without selecting some other item in the drop-down first. When the viewer pane is lowered so that the source list looks like the first screen above, you can click on Events and have it return to the list of all events.
    Thanks for your help.

  • My DVD player does not work with some DVDs

My DVD does not work with certain DVDs.  Do I need to get it replaced or is there some other problem.

Could it be that they're out-of-region DVDs? Which model MBP do you have (15" late 2011, for example) and which version of OS X are you running?

  • Loading family DVD into iMovie

Ok, I know this has probably been answered 1,000 times here, but I can't quite find what I need.
I am a HS football coach and do the video editing for the team. One of the parents just handed me several DVD's of his video recordings. Is it possible to get the clips/contents of the DVD into iMovie so I can include them in my game cutups? I have never worked with these and have tried to avoid them just for this reason.
When I open the disk icon I see a single folder VIDEO_TS, and several folders within that one.
    What do I do?

Well, maybe not that many but enough to make it easy to find what you need.
As long as the material is not copy protected, you can open and convert the TS files with a free application called MPEGSTREAMCLIP. You can find it online. The application comes with a guide that explains how to use it.
Keep in mind that the files on the DVDs are highly compressed. To bring them into iMovie, they will be converted by MPEGSTREAMCLIP, but there will be some loss in quality.
iMovie uses its own .dv format and can handle Quicktime, both of which are available options within MPEGSTREAMCLIP.

  • Working with MOD files in iMovie 08

Hello. I have a jvc everio camcorder. I started trying to import my footage with iMovie 08, but as it reads all the cam videos, it is too slow and crashes are common. I decided to copy all my MOD files to hard drive and select only the desired clips, but now, it seems I can't import directly the MOD files.
Should I change the file extension or convert the clips to work with iMovie? With iMovie 06 I must convert clips to DV, what is slow and takes a lot of time and space.
How do people with hard disk camcorders work with iMovie 08?

    Hi,
The portal component runs at the Server side - the server can't access directly to End-User files.
but you can use the FileUploader control to load the file change it at the server and post it back with the response.

  • How do I burn a slide show to a DVD which will work with my DVD player?

I've been able to create a slide show of photos with selected i-Tunes music.  I can create a file and burn it to a blank DVD R, but both a regular and Blu-Ray DVD players say the disk is incompatible.
Also, is there supposed to be a file under Events where you can keep other slide shows?

You need a video DVD authoring application like iDVD. Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
NOTE: there are other video DVD authoring apps available thru the App Store.  However, they do not have the themes and professional appearance that iDVD provides.

  • IPhoto imported photos from DVD only work with the DVD in the drive.

I have several photo DVD's created on PC, jpeg format. I inserted the DVD, dragged the photos into events, they seemed to copy into iPhoto, I created albums. All seemed fine, but when I eject the DVD, my Mac can no longer find the file and I get a message that says "the volume for .......cannot be found, please insert the desk and wait for it to appear on the desktop. How do I actually copy the photos onto my computer?

Are you running a Managed Library or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.
The message you getting sounds like you're running a REFERENCED library.

  • How does eject work with 2 DVd drives fitted?

I have a Mirror Door Powermac G4 and want to run two DVD drives. What worries me is how I'll eject them since I use the eject keyboard button. When I press eject will both drives eject simultaneously?
Anyone got experience of running two optical drives at once in a Powermac?

On some Macs, you can press Option-Eject to open or close the tray of an optional second optical drive.

  • IDVD nor iMovie Is Working with ArcSoft Showtime Software

I used ArcSoft's Showtime to burn dvds from my vhs tapes. The copies are in .vob file format and neither iMac program will work with these movie discs which I can play in my home dvd. What must I do to have iMac software work with my dvds in .vob? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Bill

Btw .... if you have the finished DVD (assuming it is not copy protected) and it also has a video_ts foder then you might be able to use an app like:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.products.htm
in order to convert the files to a format (QT) that i-apps can read (you may see some loss in quality as a result).

  • Working with an original DVD

I'm working with a DVD in order to familiarize myself with FCE because I don't have any raw fotage or even a digital camcorder. Just an old Hi8. So, I'm working with a manufactured DVD to practice using fce. and in the end y end result onto a burned DVD has poor quality. The focus seems to go in and out as if someone originally was trying to keep focus.
    1. Firstly, it is a full screen dvd format. 640x480.
    2. I use a decoder to create .vob files from it.
    3. I then use MPEG Sreamclip to convert it to a .mov file.
    4. I theen import it to fce for editing.
    5. I then export my sequence.
    6. I then import it into IDVD.
    7. I then author a dvd
    8. And then I save to disc as an image. for preiviewing
    9. And then I view it with software that allows me to play .img files for converstion to .vob files to play in my movie server.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? And maybe why my results have poor quality? Could be too much importing and exporting of the media, in which creating degradation?

6 pin to 4 pin cable. And I think thats what I need
    Yes you do.
It's also called iLink or IEEE1394.
These things are readily available from computer or electronic stores.
I see them in Woolworths when I'm with my wife grocery shopping.

  • ISight will no longer work with IMovie

I am having trouble getting ISight to be recognized by IMovie. This is a recent occurance possibly related the the use of an external camera for a period of time. Now I cannot get IMovie to see the ISight internal camera. The Mac is a G4 with os 10.4.9. IMovie is rev 5.0.2
    Any ideas?
    Karen Bemis
    MAC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Zack please help!
If you do not get what you need from Karen, here are the solutions that help most G5 iMac users who encounter iSight problems. None are complicated, but the only way to find which one will work for you is to continue down the list until you find the one that fixes your Mac.
    (1) Try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240
Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
If your iSight works with all applications except iMovie, stop now and post back the details of your testing in a new topic. Your problem is different from Karen's, and yours deserves the attention it will get in your own individual topic. Include the names of which apps work with iSight and confirm that the problem was EXACTLY the same when you logged in with other user accounts.
If you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting, see this Help article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?
    path=Mac/10.4/en/mh168.html
    (2) If resetting or the other suggestions above do correct your iSight problem with any application, you can try the following:
    - Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    - Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help)
    - Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC):
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
    macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10410updateppc.html
    - Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (3) If none of these suggestions help, I suggest that you take your iMac to your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check.

  • Camcorder that works with Imovie HD & 09?

My old jvc mini dv camcorder just died and I need a new video camera right away.
I use Imove HD 95% of the time because I haven't had an opportunity to sit down and learn Imovie 09.
Here is what I'm looking for:
    1. A camera that I could use with Imovie HD as well as one that would work with 09 once I get it figured out.
    2. Is a HD camcorder an option if I would like to use Imove HD or can HD video only be used with imovie )(?
    3. Price must be relatively inexpensive. With a newborn at home, money is very tight, but don't want to miss those special moment so I need something.
    4. I would love to be able to use a tapeless camera, but then I am forced to use 09, right?
Maybe I should just take the plunge and learn Imovie 09. Is it radically different than HD and if so, is it still as easy to use and figure out as HD?
Thanks for your help! I never thought purchasing a new video camera would be so difficult.

    1. You would need an HD camera that records to "tape" to work with the older version of iMovie. It must also have a Firewire connection to the computer. It would also work with later versions of iMovie (7 and 8).
    3. You decide after you've done your homework.
    4. Not supported by imovie version 6, or earlier.

  • Apple tv not working with panosonic TH-50PX75U old.

Apple tv not working with a 3-4 year old Panasonic TH50PX75U tv, works fine on all other tv's in the house. HDMI cables seem to be fine they work with the DVD and DVR. Ratio is set to auto, apple logo on screen when booting up then Goes away. Seen twice for a split, nano second the apple tv menu on screen. Then in upper left corner of tv a grey box appears with HDMI 2 appears. any help would be great... Thanks in advance, Tom

I had a similar issue, without the actual error message. If you can't get it running at all, you will be forced to do what I, and many others have done over the past 24 hours. You can restore your Apple TV to factory settings (you will then have to enter your ID, passwords, etc., to connect everything again--sigh--) by obtianing a Micro-USB cable (found one today at Best Buy for 5 bucks, available other places that sell electronics, etc.) disconnect your Apple TV, and connect it via the micro usb cable (which attaches in the back of the ATV) to your computer, plug the ATV power cord into the wall and open iTUnes. You can click the Apple TV on the left side of iTunes and click restore--it will not take too long on a decent internet connection, and it will automatically install the software update (you have no choice on this, BTW, you can't go back to the previous software, as Apple only supplies the new software online (sadly).  Your ATV 3 should work and you can put it back to your TV and re-enter all your info and enjoy the new features. But if you are like me, you won't enjoy AirPlay, something seems to be wrong with that if you use an iPhone or iPad and have updated to IOS7--not sure which is the problem, or both, but be prepared for a little more frustration, but at least your ATV 3 will "work" mostly as it did before.
I hope this helps, it is frustrating, but it is resolveable with a little bit of time--not that I'm happy about it, either.

  • Does the DCR-SR62 30GB Sony Handycam work with Final Cut Express hd 3.5?

    Hi,
I am a new mac user and I want to get a good camera that will work with Final Cut Express hd, I am currently looking at the DCR-SR62 30GB and the HDR-UX1 dvd both by sony and I would like to know if these to cameras or one of them will work with Final Cut Express Hd. Thanks.

Niether one of these cams are the best choice for FCE. FC can not directly work with either DVD or HD (as in Hard drive) camcorders. You will have to convert and/or rip the output of either camera, giving you an extra work step and perhaps diminishing the quality of your footage
FCE is designed to work with DV/HDV material ... from a tape, throught a Firewire connection
There is software like MPEG Streamclip which will allow you to convert those cam's output to work with FC but if you haven't bought them yet, I would hold off and look at a good quality tape based cam
