Working with H.264

I am looking at a new HD Sony camera.  The specification states that the file format is HD: MPEG4 AVC/H.264; SD: MPEG2.
I have just upgraded from Premiere 6.5 and I know from experience that compressed file formats are not tolerated well.  I have research the question of whether CS4 will work well witht his HD format and have not found a conclusive YES or NO answer.  One source I found states that CS4 will work fine in everything from capture to edit to export, while another says it will not work.
Can anyone please confirm for me whether the HD format for this camera will work with CS4??
Thanks,
Jim

I've been reading comments about editing AVCHD and although it may be compatible with CS4 there is some strong opinion about not doing it.  That leads me to a general question about format conversion.
I've been using AVS Video Converter to get files that will import and edit properly in Premiere.  One of the output file type choices is Uncompressed Original; PCM audio which make an AVI file that will work in Premier just fine.
If a converter is used on an AVCHD file to produce a more editable file then is there anything lost in the translation along the way?  Presuming all the project settings are for high def with the proper aspect ratio, ect. then can one expect the final output video to look as good as the original AVCHD files?
This isn't a question about the AVS converter so much as the general concept of conversion.  After all, the whole idea of shooting in high def is to end up with a high def video with all the quality advantages over standard DV.
Any thoughts?

  • Best way to work with H.264 video

    Hello!
I'm working with 1080p 29.97 (H.264 encoded) video and I want to bring it into FCP (off a SDHC card) edit it and export it out. I would like to do everything always keeping the highest possible quality. What is a good workflow for this?
Right now I'm using the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) compression. When I bring my video into a sequence it says (in Sequence Settings) that the aspect ratio is HDTV 1080i (16:9). Should I change it so it isn't interlaced because it really is progressive video and that is the way I would like it?
    Thanks!

    First you say...
    I'm working with 1080p 29.97
    Then you say...
Should I change it so it isn't interlaced because it really is progressive video and that is the way I would like it?
It isn't interlaced. Just because the sequence settings are, doesn't mean that your footage is. Interlaced means two fields...and if your footage was truely interlaced, both fields would be different. But with Progressive footage, both fields are the same. SO nothing has changed.
You are doing things right. OH, but ProRes HQ is overkill. The only thing you gain are files that are 50% larger than regular ProRes. HQ is designed for working with 10-bit codecs, H.264 is an 8-bit codec.

  • PRE9 "Stopped Working" with H.264 clips

I recently purchased PRE9 and installed it on my daughter's new laptop: HP dmt4 with Intel i-5 Dual Core, 4GB RAM, Win 7 64bit, and ATI Radeon 5450 GPU (I disabled the switchable graphics).
She gets her clips from a Sony Webbie HD which encodes AVC/H.264 MP4.
With a simple project of 5 different clips and a few transitions, PRE9 constantly crashes intermittently (and sometimes predictably) when playing the timeline as well as during rendering of the timeline. The project uses the AVCHD LITE 720p30 preset (I'm a little suspect of this choice).
Upon crashing, we get the "PRE9 Stopped Working" windows OS generated dialog and then Windows acts all mighty and suggests it is looking for a solution - which it fails to accomplish.
I ensured that I have installed the lastest QuickTime and Radeon video driver, but I have had no success in solving this problem.
Any ideas on what I should look for to ascertain enough information to lead me in the right direction?
Am I correct that it is using the codec from QT for this type of video file?
Would converting the MP4 file to some other format for use in editing help?
Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

I appreciate all the suggestions, but I am still having no success.
PRE9 gave me error messages when I tried to load the clips into a project with Full AVCHD, so I actually changed to Flip Mino HD and Ultra HD 29.97. No problems bringing in the clips, but still having the same crash issues I had when using the AVCHD Lite.
I even went back and imported the clips straight from the camera using PRE9 instead of moving them over manually.
It now consistently crashes when just editing titles.
I noticed in the EventViewer that all crashes logged an error like the following:
Faulting application name: Adobe Premiere Elements.exe, version: 9.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4c86effb
Faulting module name: xerces-c_3_0.dll, version: 3.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4936a5bb

    Report Id: d4c4453a-d8c7-11df-a842-70f39597bc7c
The xerces-c_3.0.dll module seems to somehow be central to every crash.
    Any additional ideas?
    Thanks for the help!

  • H.264 not working with QT

H.264 streaming does not work with QuickTime instead a green screen pops up. I can watch the camera (Axis P1343 network cam) using Motion JPEG stream profile but not H.264. The camera LiveView is set up to use QT but QT does not respond. I know this issue has been discussed before and a lot of literature exists on this subject on line. Has a solution been found? My computer is a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the quick response, I checked with our Admin guys
    and it indeed 3.0.0.
    So I will update immediately.
Is there a big advantage to using H.264 over VP6 for live
    streaming?
I have another forum question that went unanswered relating
to this issue asking, what are the required recommended settings
for both FMS 3 and FME 2.5 to reduce any lagging in video on a 1gb
LAN which should not have any?
    cheers again

  • Working with 720p h.264 files

Is my Mac supposed to be able to work directly with 720p h.264 files? Macbook Pro 2,33 Ghz with 2 gig RAM...
From my limited testing, I have seen extremely slow scrubbing with the previously mentioned files.
I was thinking of buying a Elgato turbo.264 HD for importing video from my Canon HF11... but I don't think its worth it, if working with the video is so slow...
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

h.264 is primarily a playback format. It is designed to be highly compressed, yet give high quality pictures. It is similar to AVCHD in this regard. AVCHD uses h.264 internally.
The way h.264 compression works is the [Group of Pictures compression technique|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupofpictures], where for every full frame, there are, say, 24 frames of highly compressed information. For example, imagine a video of an eagle flying. You get one full frame of the eagle flying. The next 24 frames say, "background is the same, but shifted over to the left, eagle's wings are moving up and down, etc."
When you import AVCHD, iMovie converts all these partial frames to full frames in the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can do the same thing for h.264 by using a free tool like MPEG Streamclip. You can drag your h.264 file into streamclip and export as AIC full frames.
This makes it much easier to edit.

  • Can anyone confirm if Elgato Turbo.264 HD works with iMovie '11?

I've been reading a couple of accounts of people who seem to be using Turbo.264 HD (hardware) to accelerate iMovie '11 encoding.
Yet on the Elgato site there is an (admittedly old) support article that says it is only compatible with iMovie '09. Other reviews around the 'Net say the same, and have not been updated with info about iMovie '11.
So can anyone confirm that they have a working setup with iMovie '11 and Elgato Turbo.264 HD (hardware version)? I'd like to make sure before I plunk down the money.
P.S. I know it doesn't seem to work with Final Cut Pro X, I'm focusing on iMovie for now.

    confirmed
does an excellent job with my set-up (MacMIni, C2D, 2.26GHz) ...
in FCPX it's a 2step process: export timeline, drag resulting .mov into Turbo.app ...

  • H.264 decoding cannot work with latest version FP

I report a bug of latest version of Adobe Flash Player ActiveX plugin(10.1.102.64).
After upgrading onto version 10.1.102.64, the H.264 stream decoding of 1080p/720p behaves discontinuously, so we have to uninstall it and find version 10.0.45.2 installed and the decoding goes back to work.
The H.264 stream is incapsulated by RTMP packet and streamed from FMS 3.5 server.
We think this bug will influence many applications and services over internet, please fix it ASAP in next version of Adobe Flash Player ActiveX plugin.
Nothing related to H/W acceleration, I checked it.

    According to this http://forums.ni.com/t5/FieldPoint-Family/FP-1601-with-LabVIEW-7-1-upconvert-to-2012/td-p/2218918
LabVIEW 2011 is the last version that includes support for the FP-1601.

  • Working with Canon 5D MarkII H.264 Footage in Final Cut Studio - 5, Not 6

I'm new to this whole posting thing, but I'm hoping I can get some help. I'm just now starting to try to edit video footage from my Canon 5D Mark II in Final Cut, but I do not have FCP6, I have FCP5. I'm starting to realize this may be a problem, as it does not seem to have any sort of 1080 30p setting for video.
So...what I've done so far is to down convert to 720 p30 (I guess) using MPEG Streamclip, and then work with it that way. But I'm losing a lot of nice information, right? (Wrong?)
Obviously, I'm very new to the whole HD thing, so please go easy on me. I'm just hoping that there is some way that I can edit the lovely 1080 30p footage in Final Cut Studio Version 5, and then output a looped 10 minute video via DVD Studio Pro.
    Anyone??
    I appreciate any guidance.

Strangely, that is just not one of the options that shows up for me - I get the huge list, but no 1080p 30. In fact, no 30p anywhere to be found except for the 720 p30.
I wonder if there is something I can download?
I keep running into posts telling me I have to have version 6 - there MUST be something I can do in 5!! I hope, I hope...

  • Encore CS5 constantly locks up/freezes working with large H.264 file

This is driving me mad, I'm trying to author my first Blu Ray with this program, a single layer output with H.264/AVC video. I've encoded the video elsewhere and I have a 21GB .264 file. It's a BR legal file but as soon as I import it into Encore CS5 the fun and games begin. Firstly it takes a good five minutes to import and Encore appears to have crashed. Finally though it does import and looking at 'Blu Ray transcode' it says 'Don't transcode', so it's a legal file. However if I then try to do anything with the file in Encore, like add it to a timeline the whole program locks up again. 10 minutes later it's added as a timeline but trying to navigate that timeline to add chapters is impossible, the program locks up (Not responding) if I try and move the slider or pretty much do anything. It means making a BR with this file is pretty much impossible.
My PC spec is as follows:
    Core i5 2500k 3.3Ghz
    8GB DDR3 1600mhz RAM
120GB Crucial SSD boot drive with Encore installed on
    500GB Hard Disk & 2TB Hard Disk
    Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium
Is there anything I can do to actually make Encore usable with this large file and finally finish authoring a disc? I've tried loading the file from all three drives and it's the same. The media cache is currently on my 2TB drive because I want to save space on my SSD and minimize writes to it.

Taking 5 minutes to import is normal.  Encore has to index the entire file so it knows where the keyframes are.  Don't try to do anything while that's happening.
Once in, however, Encore should respond normally.  At this point, I'm drawing a blank as to why it isn't.

Working with AVCHD: Log and Transfer FAQs
Log and Transfer was introduced to the product chain in Final Cut Express 4, and is the program's process for ingesting files in the AVCHD format utilizing MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video coding and either Dolby AC-3 or uncompressed linear PCM audio coding. The most frequently observed problems relating to the Log and Transfer process are generally quite easily addressed.
What should I know before attempting to ingest my footage?
The following facts regarding the Log and Transfer process were adapted from the [Apple Knowledge Base article|http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24840?viewlocale=en_US] on transferring AVCHD in Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 but still hold true for the current version of FCE:
AVCHD support is available only on Intel-based Macintosh computers.
AVCHD camcorders typically connect to computers via USB 2.0, not FireWire.
DVD-based AVCHD camcorders are not supported in Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier.
Standard definition video recorded with AVCHD camcorders cannot be accessed in the Log and Transfer window. SD and HD clips should not be mixed on the same HDD.
Preview of AVCHD video in the Log and Transfer window is limited to 1x forward playback. Scrubbing the playhead does not update the video in the Preview area until you stop scrubbing.
When you choose to transfer AVCHD audio in the Logging area, audio is automatically mixed down to stereo.
AVCHD footage is not ingested natively but is transcoded to the Apple Intermediate Codec.
Apple Intermediate Codec files are significantly larger than the original AVCHD files. FCE does not estimate the size of a transcoded AVCHD file before ingesting, so it is possible to exceed the available space on your capture disk during transfer. Before ingesting, keep in mind that the disk space required is about ten times greater than the size of the native AVCHD file.
Which specific formats can be ingested by Log and Transfer?
Only AVCHD footage can be ingested through the Log and Transfer process. Other formats and variants such as AVCHD Lite are not supported. All video should be recorded in a frame size of either 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 and a frame rate of 25 or 29.97 frames per second. Audio recorded on AVCHD camcorders is generally at a rate of 48kHz. If your camera shoots in a format that does not comply with one of these setups then it is most likely not supported by the application and is not guaranteed to work correctly.
Which Easy Setup preset should I select before ingesting my footage?
It is extremely important to select the preset that matches your media before you attempt to ingest via Log and Transfer. There is only one Easy Setup preset that matches the frame size and rate of your footage. If you intend to ingest AVCHD clips through Log and Transfer you will first need to select one of the following presets:
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i50
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60
If these four options do not appear under your Easy Setup list then you probably need to run Software Update and update to FCE 4.0.1. DO NOT cycle through the available presets until you find one that works - there is only one preset that matches your media and it should be evident which one to choose by the way it is named. Select the AVCHD preset that mentions your frame size and frame rate (i50 presets support both 50i and 25p frame rates; similarly, i60 presets support both 60i and 29.97p frame rates). If you do cycle through many options in the hope of selecting the correct one through guess-and-check you will probably have corrupted your preference file and need to [trash your preferences|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2611] before continuing.
Why don't my clips appear when I open the Log and Transfer window?
Make sure your camcorder records AVCHD in a format supported by FCE4. It should be connected to one of your computer's USB ports (never connect it to an external hard drive or other external device such as your keyboard or a USB hub), powered on, and set to video playback mode.
If the camcorder +does not+ mount on your Desktop your USB port or cable may be malfunctioning. Try plugging it in to another port or using a different USB cable to see if it makes a difference.
If the camcorder does mount on your Desktop but the clips do not appear in the Log and Transfer window you will need to point the program to the directory that contains your media.
First, click the Add Folder button in the upper left of the Log and Transfer window. The button looks like this:
Then, you will need to navigate to the root directory in which your media is stored. Most camcorders call this folder "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD" and it should be located at the very top level of the camcorder when mounted. If your camcorder records to a valid AVCHD directory structure then your clips should load after the Add Folder process is completed.
I would like to keep a working backup of my original clips so that I can delete them off the camcorder's internal memory. How should I do this?
There are two main ways to keep a backup of your clips. The first is to ingest every clip on your camcorder through the Log and Transfer process, and store the Apple Intermediate Codec files the application creates in an easily accessible place such as an external FireWire drive. The advantage of this method is that you have the ability to open back up old editing projects, reconnect the media as necessary, and keep going as if you'd never left. However, due to the large amount of space AIC takes up (usually somewhere in the vicinity of 41-50GB an hour when transcoded from AVCHD), this is not always feasible.
Another often preferable approach is to copy over the root directory in which your clips are stored (usually named "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD") from the camcorder to your computer or an external drive. As long as you maintain the original file structure, you will be able to ingest your clips again at a later date using the "Add Folder" process detailed above to navigate to their new location.
My clips appear, but when I attempt to ingest a red exclamation point appears and the window displays the message "Error: No Data"
This is one of the most common problems that users experience when trying to ingest their media through the Log and Transfer process. Luckily, it also has one of the easiest solutions.
In the Log and Transfer window, click on the gear icon in the top right and select "Preferences" in the contextual menu that appears.
Make sure the video is set to transcode to the Apple Intermediate Codec and the audio is set to Plain Stereo.
After doing so, hit OK and try to ingest again.

  • What is the best way to work with avi-files?

    Hallo all,
I'm new to this forum so before asking my question I'd like to say some words about myself:
I'm not a native english speaker, so please excuse language mistakes I'll possibly make and feel free to ask if I'll write something which you don't understand due to this fact.
Half year ago I bought a HD Cam from Canon (Legria HF 200) which - in my opinion - has a good quality (good enough for my hobby films), and realized that cutting HD films on Windows would require a lot of expensive high end hardware. So I bought a MacBook and Final Cut Express - a decision I'm very happy with.
After the first disastrous tries to make a small clip I bought Tom Wolsky's "Editorial Workshop for FCE" and now I'm more happy than I was before (because I've seen that you're posting here: thanks for the great book!)
    But now to my question:
I have 9 old PAL DV tapes (containing family clips which I'd like to cut now) recorded with my old JVC, which has a FireWire port only. Unfortunately my MacBook doesn't have such, so I have to capture to DV avi using a PC with Pinnacle Studio.
1.) The avi files are very large (between 13 - 18 GB). Because I'm not able to recapture due to the missing FireWire port I'd like to archive the material on an HDD. How should I convert the AVI to make it smaller without a great loss of quality but keeping the ability to use it in FCE (especially when reconnecting after creating the subclips from the original)
2.) I'd like to keep the whole captured tape content as master clip and work with subclips from it. Yesterday I converted such an AVI to Film using QuickTime (the size didn't change noticable) and used the DV-Start/Stop detection. Unfortunately that didn't work correctly - some of the markers have been set in the middle of the shots instead as expected exactly between them. Should I do this on the original AVI file to make it work? And if, is it possible to reconnect the subclips created this way to a MOV created from the original AVI?
3.) On the PC I get an xml file containing the correct position data of the subclips (as timecode, if I remember correctly). Is it possibly, to use this data in FCE to mark subclips? Maybe by putting it manually into an xml project file or something similar?
4.) Or is there any other way to solve my problem?
Sorry for the big post and thanks in advance,
    André

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

  • Final Cut Pro 7.03 crashes, impossible to work with the system

    Hi,
I have a mac pro with the following configuration:
*2,4 Ghz westmere octa (mac pro 5,1)
    *24Gb Ram in 6x4gb FCM 1066MHz modules
*DeckLink HD Extreme 3D video card
    *ATI Radeo HD 5770
    *NVIDEO Quattro 4000
    *Tempo Sata e2p esata controller
I work a lot in final cut pro, but it crashes like every 5 minutes or even faster, sometimes i runs for 10 minutes without a crash. That is terrible and that 10k workstation is not usable...
I already formatted the harddisk, re set up osx and fcs, installed every update for every part of my workstation but cannot fix it.
Especially viewing clips as thumbnail galleries (video previews) and working with timelines where you have those little video thumbnails on every cut in the beginning of the clip and scrubbing around there leads to crashes.
I mostly work on xdcam422 material at 220mbit and 280mbit recorded with the nanoflash, but also in prores422hq.
Anyone an idea on how to fix this?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
    Here the Maintainance Pack Log:
This crash log suggests that Final Cut Pro was overloaded at the time of the crash. This can occur if your project is overly complex, has multiple Motion project layers or is using MPEG-based media (HDV, H.264, MPEG-2, XDCAM, AVCHD), particularly if you are using filters with such media. Note that overloading is more likely to be the cause of the crash than the reason below.
    Corrupt / Unsupported Media
This crash was caused by corrupt media or media that is unsupported by Final Cut Pro. A common cause of this crash is using media on your timeline that is unsuitable for editing such as AVI, WMV or MPEG-derived codecs (XDCAM, HDV, MPEG-2, H.264).
    Suggested Actions
Use Corrupt Clip Finder to locate the problematic clip and then recapture or attempt to repair it.
If your sequence codec is set to an MPEG-based codec such as MPEG-2, HDV, XDCAM or H.264, change it to ProRes.
Alternatively, and for best results, convert any MPEG-based media to ProRes.
If the issue is related to a codec, upgrade the codec if an upgrade is available or consider transcoding your footage to an editing-friendly codec such as ProRes.
If you are using CMYK images, convert them to RGB.
    More Information
To improve the stability of your system, create a less complex "lite" version of your project, export embedded Motion projects as QuickTime movies and if you are using MPEG-based media such as H.264, HDV and XDCAM, set your sequence codec to ProRes or convert the media to the ProRes codec.

  • Premiere Pro CC CUDA rendering working with avi output only

    Hello All,
on my system Premiere Pro CC is only using GPU rendering with AVI output formats.
All other formats like MPEG2, Quicktime, H.264 are unfortunatly fully CPU rendered (=slow).
I just upgraded from trial to payed mode and when Premiere started the CUDA was already enabled (might have activated it during trial already).
But anyway I checked if my card was in the support txt file and also used the cuda.zip auto tool to make sure I had no typo.I did this for Premiere Pro CC and also copied the list into the Adobe Media Encoder directory.
No matter what I did - no hardware rendering.
So I started playing with input and output formats.
It turned out that CUDA is currently only working with AVI output. I installed GPU-Z to check my GPU usage vs CPU usage in the task manager.
As soon as I pick any other output format than AVI - CPU usage during rendering is up to 80-90 and GPU at 0%.
With AVI output GPU ist around 30 and CPU in the 40ties or less as it should be.
    What is going wrong here?
One of my old applications Cyberlink Power Produces 11 is doing the h264 rendering in half the time.
    Any suggestions?
    My System is running on:
Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe with 16GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti (with current Driver - 332.21 )
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit (with Media Center) and latest updates
Current entry in CUDA*.txt file (as printed by Adobe GPUSniffer):
    GeForce GTX 660 Ti
    And already tried:
    GeForce GTX 660Ti
    GeForce GTX 660
    Best regards
    Moongate
P.S. I already followed the instructions on this page http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm

I now understand that Premiere Pro CC is only using my GPU for accelerating complex effects during editing giving me the possibility of a live preview during editing?
From the editing in other apps I know that the final rendering can also eat up much time which is why they try to accelerate it via GPU rendering. I see that Premiere is "outsourcing" this task to the Adobe Media Encoder (AME) so that you can continue working during rendering.
But I believe what tricked me into asking this question is that in the AME there is also the option to choose between software and GPU assisted Mercury Engine. So there must be a purpose for it and it sounds resonable that it is for GPU assited rendering.
So when the encoder is not using the GPU to speed up completion of rendering - what is he doing with that option?
Would it not be clever to cut rendering drastically using the GPU - its hard to believe that Adobe is only using it for previews?

  • Best way to work with interlaced and progressive clips in the same timeline

I´m shooting with Sony MC-50E camera in 1920x1080, 50i. When importing with Log & Transfer I can work with ProRes 422 files in interlaced mode. I have to mix the footage with video screencapture which is progressive (ProRes 422). The final videos are for web only so it should end up as progressive H264 videos. I´m getting good result if exporting to H264, 1024x576 with deinterlacing enabled, but exporting to full HD gives typical interlaced lines in the picture. How can I avoid this and what is the best solution for working with both interlaced and progressive clips?

Deinterlace in Compressor using Frame Controls, Best settings. You can reconnect the deinterlaced files to your project, if you've already edited, but you may need to copy and paste the clips in your sequence to a new 25p timeline, then Remove Attributes, Basic Motion.
When you're ready to export your sequence, use Quicktime Movie, Current Settings, Self-contained. Take that file to Compressor to transcode back to h.264.
The Apple T.V. preset is very good.
