Working with InDesign

Hello my name is Erma. I have to create 3 posters in InDesign, but I forgot hot to put in the type. Every time I click on type and start typing nothing happens. I know that there is more to it, but I forgot what to do first. Could someone please help me?

Hi, Erma.
Click the Type tool icon and then drag the mouse across the document to create a textbox. Then type inside the textbox.

What Mac operating systems work with Indesign CS3?

What Mac operating system will work with Indesign CS3? I have 10.5.8 and need to upgrade to 10.7 so that my new laser printer will work with my Mac.
If one buys a new Mac 10.8 or 10.9 will ID CS3 work?

Maybe…maybe not. It certainly won’t be supported and under no circumstance should you use migration assistant to move it to a new machine. With that I can almost assure you it won’t work.

Files and font sync turn off working with InDesign..

Files and font sync turns off when I work with InDesign directly on the CC disctop files folder. It use to be ok to work directly in sync mode, but apparently not any more. I guess the problem is the backup file that InDesign creates, that consist of signs behaps not allowed (?). It use to work for me, but not any more..?
Do anyone els have the same problem?

Thanks for your reply. In the Creative Cloud Help page I get, it says: "Save and close the file when you're done editing it and the error goes away.", but I actually have to reconnect. The bad thing about this is that it turns off the font sync as well when I was working.
I have temporarely solved the problem, simply be changing the name of the file I'm working on. I have tryed to reproduce it with a different name - all with leagal signs according to the page mensioned above - with no success (which is positive). Then I tryed to move the file to a new folder within the folder I was working on, and then it worked without problem. Strange.
I guess, if I run in to the same problem again, I will just try to change the name.

Mouse Selectively Working with InDesign 5.5

After weeks of working with InDesign 5.5 with no problems, I am now having problems accessing toolbar options with my mouse. It will let me select some items, but not all, and while I can select drop down menues - drop arrows, highlighting font sizes, spacing changes and so on cannot be. Mouse works fine with other programs including Photoshop. Any ideas why and how to restore accessibility?

Windows 7? Large fonts?
Either set them back to 100% or turn off Aero.

We are about to install windows8 on all computers in the office, but I am worried if it will work with InDesign CS6.

We have no problems here: InDesign CC and InCopy CS6: works fine, assignments, packages all is exhancing perefctly. The same for InCopy CC and InDesign CS6. The assigments are still .icma. Have no use for QR-codes however so no idea if this will cause problems but I can not see why it would..

Linotype Decoration Pi Font will not work with InDesign CS6. If I buy a new version from the Sdobr store, will it work?

Has the font ever worked in CS6? If not, did it work in a previous version? Did it ever work in any version of ID using your current OS version? I ask the last question because I helped someone on another forum today that had a font that did not survive migration on their Mac. In their case, the font was selectable but the application would crash exporting to PDF or printing.
I'm using a PC. It works here.
It is listed along with the fonts that start with D here.

This will work for online storage.
The preview you will see on the website but will be what you see on your desktop if the the folder was missing. If you want someone else to be able to see a preview online to give comment feedback you could export out a PDF file of the work-in-progress and upload it.
If you just want to work on the project at different locations it might be easier to zip up everything into a single file and upload it. Then download it onto the computer where you want to work and unzip it.

Help,My vc2003 can not work with indesign debug version

Hello everyone, I am a new developer of Indesign plugin, recently I got the problem as follows:
I use vc2003 to open the SDK provided project, and click F5, then selected the Indesign as the programm to load this plug-in. However Indesign did not load the plugin and further more, non of the break-points I setted in the programm worked. It was very strange!

I had solved the problem.
If you just put the plugin in the app's plugin folder, the VC2003 would be unable to work with your indesign.
In order to debug my plugin with VC2003 and indesign, I edit the file in %Documents and Settings%\%user%\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 4.0 which named PlugInConfig, copy the PlugInConfig.out and renamed it as PlugInConfig.txt and Dlelte the content then add the following lines:
=Path
"your custome plugin folder".
Problem solved!:)

Need an inexpensive computer for work with indesign n micro office... suggestions?

I am currently using my personal computer for work. It is a mac with indesign CS5. I use microsoft office on it. My boss agreed to buy me something to keep at work. I only have a budget of $1,000 to $1,500. I'm wondering if I need a apple or if I can get something similiar on a PC. I need to get Indesign on it, and I'm not possitive if I can get indesign for a PC. Someone suggested a Mac Mini, but then I would have to get the screen, key board and mouse. Any moe suggestions??

Thank you Rysz, but (if you scroll up & read my original post you will discover) I don't own my new MacBook Pro...yet! I'm just researching ahead of time to help me make the decision. The customized MBP I have saved in my cart is over $3000 (incl the 3-yr support plan). So it's going to take me a little bit of research before I decide or before I can really justify the purchase.
I just wanted to be prepared for all the inevitable technical / learning-curve headaches that I will experience IF I take the plunge. And as everyone has experienced, when you're new to and making your first purchase of a different technology, and you don't know what to expect about a purchase, you ultimately get it home, set it up and find it didn't come with all the necessary interface devices, converters or cables, etc. And of course the online purchase procedure wizard doesn't tell you or ask you what else you will need if you want to perform a specific task.
But I'm sure (if) once I do make the purchase, I will definitely be back here to pick everyone's brains! These communities are fantastic. Thanks again!

Rotate for Ipad in viewer doesn´t work with Indesign CC

I created a dual-orientation folio (An entire set horizontal and another vertical) with INdesign CC.
When uploading to Folio producer, the version for preview will not rotate.
Before buying Indesign CS6, I would like to confirm that feature will be enabled... On the other hand, is there any way to test that funcionality before acquiring the license? Is this restriction in CC made by design, or am I doing something wrong?

There are no restrictions on dual orientation folio creation in Creative Cloud. It's probably that your folio wasn't explicitly created as dual-orientation to start with, or your device is orientation locked.

Will InCopy CS6 work with InDesign CS5.5?

Hi folks - I need to use InDesign CS5.5 due to a customer's requirement. I need to use InCopy to delegate copy editing. Looks like the lowest version of InCopy I can get is InCopy CS6. Will InCopy CS6 play nice with InDesign CS5.5?

How can I get the keyboard program InKey to work with InDesign?

I use InKey to type special characters, particularly underlined vowels, for another language. This has worked fine in Microsoft Word with most Unicode fonts. However in InDesign, the underlines do not line up under the letter; or, more commonly, they just display as a pink space or box after the letter. Simply using the Underline format on these letters is not sufficient to be able to check their spelling.

Oh, cool! I never handle any Mayan stuff in my job, but many of my academic cohort have done so. Mostly Tzotzil.
Anyhow: your sample font was Times New Roman. If you can't see the combining glyphs, then you're using an out-of-date version of the font, or something else is wrong. . Did you maybe start your work on a contemporary version of Word in WIndows, and now you've shifted to using a Mac with an older version of Office? THere are plenty of nulls in TNR (which are usually codepoints not in Unicode, usually a sign of some kind of hacky workaround on the part ofthe font designer). There should be a real combining macron below right about here, in between the crazy upper Latin and the Greek caps :
So I'd want to know: what font are you using for this? If not TNR, then I'd suggest Gentium. I might even suggest dropping TNR for Gentium. Judging by your screen name, you may well already be aware of SIL. If not - oh hey, they make fonts for people who are in your shoes! Go check 'em out. The fonts are free, and pretty reliable. And Gentium may already have a precomposed with-line-below glyph for your typesetting needs.
The Kerning dropdown lets you adjust the spacing between letters in a letter-by-letter way. Selecting all of your text and picking "Metrics" is the way to go here - unless you are a designer who thinks that the capital D is way too far away from the lowercase i, and want to tweak the kerning manually. "Optical" is for large font sizes where body-text-style kerning is too spacious. Avoid using it at small font sizes.

Working with InDesign CS3 and CS4

I'm a graphic design student and recently bought InDesign CS4 for my home computer, but all the media labs on campus only have CS3. Is there a way I can constantly work on one file, switching from one version to the other? I heard there's a way to save CS4 as a CS3 file, but will a CS3 file open in CS4?

CS4 will open a CS3 file. To go the other way, export from CS4 to INX.
CS3 (if fully patched) will open INX from CS4. Don't use CS4-only
features, and expect to run into some problems with text wrap changing.
