Working with iphoto AND Photoshop Elements

Hi,
I currently use iPhoto 5 and want to begin using Photoshop Elements. I am wondering if someone could share their ideas on how to go about using both programs. Here is my objective. I think that I can get more out of my photographs but moving up to Photoshop Elements. I think that perhaps this program can make better black & white photos as well as color (has more adjustments that are capable of specific controls).
That said, once I have finished with a photo, should I then import it into iPhoto?
What type of work flow routines do others use when they have both of these programs?
Thanks for any ideas!

If I may take the opportunity to expound on this thread to incorporate my own question...
I too wish to edit in Elements and retain iPhoto as an organization tool, but have read that saving to jpg is not the best idea. After editing and/or flattening tiff is the better option, no? Anyway, the default directory in Elements in the save as dialog I believe is to the same roll the original came from, but often after an edited jpg is saved into tiff iPhoto doesn't see it. Stoplight tells me it is there, but there is apparently something about the process that iPhoto doesn't like.
Lori, can you be kind enough to expound on this?
Thanks.
ps: Tatty - I took a Elements class at a local high school and learned bunches. Alternatively www.totaltraining.com has a nice DVD available too

Yes you can. In iPhoto create a Album with the photos you want in it. You can drag them from your Events folder. In iTunes with your iPad connected go to Photos by cliking on your iPad. You can then select the album or events you want.

    What exactly means "refuses"?
This is the message which comes up if I try to update (from the Help menu) or re-install my licenced copies of CS6 or Photoshop Elements 9.
    “We've encountered the following issues
Installer failed to initialize. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem”
    Get Adobe Support Advisor”
    OR
on trying to open PhotoshopCS6 I get this message:-
“Adobe Application Manager required to start your trial, is missing or damaged.
Please download a new copy of Adobe Application Manager from http://www.adobe.com/go/applicationmanager_uk”
When I follow these instructions and try and start up/install or update Photoshop CS6 I get the same messages all over again. This has been going on since Tuesday afternoon and I am anxiuous to resolve the problem. For several years now all this has worked perfectly through your website and I cannot understand what has changed.  Once I cancel these messages the products themselves seem to function OK. When I attempt to use Adobe Update Manager I get the same messages as above. You will see that my products are properly licensed and up to date. Have you any solution?

Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are considered the best quality, but there may be other reasons why this happens, such as a fault with the superdrive.

  • IPhoto and Photoshop Elements 4.0

Did a quick browse and didn't find my answer... I just purchased the PS Elements 4, and am starting to play around with it. I've noticed that when i edit a photo imported from iPhoto, i can't import it back to the iPhoto library. Now, i've been using the Bridge App to do this... is this causing the problem? Or is this simply something that can't be done. You can import out to edit, but you can't import back to iPhoto? Am i missing something?
    Thks!
    Brige

Assuming you've set Photoshop Elements 4 as your external editor for iPhoto you simply save your edited photos in PSE 4 without changing their names or locations so they're saved back into the iPhoto library.
If you've set things up properly you can choose to use iPhoto for editing some photos and those that require more work can be done with your external editor of choice and the edited versions can all saved back into the library.
The information is available in iPhoto Help and online such as here:

I just realised that this thread is under iPhoto 5 not 7 so if that's really what you're using then maybe the situation is different. I can't remember.

  • Help integrating iPhoto and Photoshop Elements 4

I bought Photoshop Elements 4 and would like to use it to edit my photos from iPhoto then take them back into iPhoto. Smtr said that's what he/she does. Could someone help me set up iPhoto to do that. I am not using Adobe Bridge thanks for the info.
Wow, PE 4 sure is powerful. Now I have a lot to do. Thanks for all the help.

    RL:
After setting iPhoto's preferences as Terence described be sure to set PSE4's color management to the following thru the Edit->Color Settings menu option:
If you want to be able to use both iPhoto's editor and PSE's then see the following:
Using 2 Image Editors in iPhoto
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and a 3rd party editor without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected the 3rd party editor as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". Then when you Control-click on an image, you can select "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu to edit in your selected editor.
And lastly, if you do any edit with PSE that causes PSE to want to change the extension to .psd, i.e. created a layered file or some of the more advanced edits, you MUST either flatten the image and force a save as a jpg file OR do a Save As to the desktop and then import the new .psd file. If you don't iPhoto will not know you did an edit and will still uses the original file.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problem with iPhoto and Photoshop CS3

iPhoto is starting to get on my nerves. I just spent the better part of a day figuring out a scanner interface issue--now something weird is going on with CS3.
Today, when I uploaded images from my iPhone to my laptop and tried to edit them in CS3 using the cropping tool, the image size went from like 10 inches to 1 pixel. If I go into image size and try to restore the size, the image comes up blank.
I ended up having to crop the image in iPhoto and complete the editing in Photoshop. Apparently cropping is the only Photoshop tool that's affected. What's going on? This is taking me twice as long as it should.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The following may be of interest:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto and Photoshop Elements 3

I upgraded to iLife 06, but having issues with Photoshop Elements 3...Prior to to upgrade, all my photos remained in chronological order. For example, all my '06 photos showed as 06, the 01 for the month, and then broken down by days. Now none of that information is showing up, and the only way I can find the photos is by going back and looking at the filmstrips. Do I need to re-install PE 3 or what? This is driving me CRAZY.
Thanks to anyone who can help,

    Hi jenn5829,
First take a look at the screenshot so you can understand how the organization is done in the Finder with iPhoto 6.
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.
Next, you can set up PS Elements as the external editor so you don't have to search for photos in the Finder, but edit right within iPhoto.
    From the iPhoto Help menu:
Choosing what happens when you click the Edit button
When you want to edit a photo, you can have the photo open in iPhoto's edit view, in a separate window, in full-screen view, or in another application.
    To choose a preference:
    Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
Click General at the top of the Preferences window.
Under Edit Photo, select one of the following options:
"In main window" opens the photo in the main viewing area.
"In separate window" opens the photo in a separate window.
"Using full screen" opens the photo in full-screen view.
"In application" opens the photo in another application you choose.
To open a photo in its own window when "Main window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
To open a photo in edit view when "Separate window" is selected, press the Option key when double-clicking the photo.
Note: Any video clip you imported into iPhoto will always open in QuickTime Player when you double-click it.
Once you set up the external editor, you can control click on an image and edit it with any of the options.
An important thing to remember is you must "save" the image with the same name, file type and flattened. when you hit "save", the edits will be reflected within iPhoto.
If you want to save the photo in another format, layered, etc. use "save as" and save it to the desktop. You can then import that image into iPhoto.

  • Using iPhoto and PhotoShop Elements together

    Hi all,
I purchased my lovely little MacBook Pro a week ago and the onyl problem I have had so far is dealing with iPhoto.
I love using iPhoto to upload and browse my photos, however I prefer editing them in Photoshop Elements.
I have found I have the following problems:
    - Cannot open a photo from within Photoshop Elements
I have got around this my right-clicking the iPhoto Library folder within Pictures, selecting the Open Selected Items (or something like that), then when I have found the photo, again right-clicking and saying Open with PhotoShop Elements.
Is there an easier way to do this?
    - Once I have edited my photo in Photoshop Elements, I can't view the edited photo in iPhoto.
    Any ideas?
    - In iPhoto, I like to create an Album of photos I would like to edit or upload to my online development company, but iPhoto doesn't seem to save albums in any searchable fashion, so I have to manually move each one into a folder on my desktop. This creates 2 copies of the same photo, which will eventually use a lot of hard disk space.
Is there an easier way to do this?
    Many thanks,

    Sascha
As Larry points out, you need to set PSE as an external editor.
The Right Click Hack is unsuported, and more importantly, is precisely why you can't see the changes in iPhoto.
You can set Photoshop as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
Albums are virtual entities - there is no corresponding folder of images. So, create the album, do your edits as described above, then to upload, if you're development doesn't have an iPhoto export plug in, select the Pics and go File -> Export and export them to a folder on the desktop. iPhoto will create a copy of the pics incorporating your changes. Upload from there - and after your upload is finished, trash the copies on the desktop - your pics are safe in iPhoto.
    Regards
    TD

What is the best way to work on photographs, editing them, and preparing for print if I can't save layers as .jpg or non-layered .tiffs? The photo lab I will be using does not allow layered .tiff. I have seen many videos that show how to let's say enhance eyes using layers, but in this video it says that .jpg cannot be used. I am new to photography and PSE an would like to know if there is an alternative way to edit an image that can be saved as .jpg. Thank you!

  • IPhoto and Photoshop Elements

I have been sent a small (144kb) black and white photo which has obviously been seriously manipulated in Adobe CS. My normal editing process is to use PE4.0.1 but I store photos in iPhoto. In this instance - and without using PE - I am noticing that the contrast of the photo in iPhoto (6.0.6) looks ok at smaller image sizes but increasing the size slider at bottom right results in a photo which is completed washed out. Not only that, but changing the iPhoto background shade in Preferences also affects the contrast of the photo - but only when displayed at the largest size. Anything other than the very largest is not affected. Any thoughts on this?
Separately, in PE I am now getting a message that "the Adobe Updater could not be started" and to reinstall the application. Does this mean PE or the Updater? The Updater is on my hard-drive but only seems to be working for Reader and I can't change its preferences. This is new and has happened on both machines. Do I worry?
    Thanks,
    Geoff.

The issue does appear to be related to the size of the photo. I now have an 8.3 MG jpeg and the difference is that on iPhoto "proper sized" photos fill the screen at maximum size. My 144 kB didn't do that with the result that it was influenced by the background window grey level. However, I still don't see why modifying this should modify the contrast of the photo.
Apart from that, any views on the PE4 Adobe Updater warning?
    Geoff.

  • Raw files - iPhoto and Photoshop Elements

I am shooting raw files on a Canon 400D. They upload into iPhoto 6.0.6 ok but I can't open them in PE4.0.1 for editing. I can drag the .CR2 file onto the desktop but PE doesn't recognise it. Am I missing something or am I going about this the wrong way? So far as I can see, iPhoto and PE should both recognise .CR2 files.
    Thank you for any help,
    Geoff.

Also, you will need a more up to date version of ACR than the one that shipped with PE 4. Go to adobe's site and download the next-to-latest version of ACR (some problems with ACR 4.4 so I'd hold off on that and get 4.3.1):

  • Iphoto and photoshop elements users question

I elements installed so that it launches through iphoto when i have to edit a picture. I am familiar with elements from my prior windows machine (god forbid). Anyway, why does elements only show the frame on the mac? meaing the background is clear. I can see iphoto or the desktop or any other applications that is behind elements? Is there a preference i have not set?

What you are describing is just the way programs are
supposed to look on a mac. You can see your desktop
because you're supposed to be able to see your
desktop (except in the Elements quick fix window). If
you're a switcher this is disconcerting at first, but
you'll learn to like the way you can quickly access
documents in any program. For instance, it's a snap
to sample the color from a graphic on the web in
Safari with PE for mac. In windows you can do it, but
it takes a heap of window juggling to get there.
