is there a way to save the black separation or all of the black type only to a layer of its own. It would need to contain all of the black type and tables etc..? Leaving all of the 4c graphics on the base layer.
This a large document with hundred of pages and only black type changes are needed between the layers for versioning.

If you need the black text to wind up on a separate printing plate from the black in the 4-color images, you will need to create a spot black, and set all your text (and table rules that will change) into that spot black.
I use this method to keep the pricing in my catalog separate, so I can print one version with prices, and one without.

Working with layers from InDesign to Acrobat

Hi, I'm currently creating a fairly large pdf document for a client which has pop-up effect windows in Acrobat. The artwork is created in InDesign and the file is exported as an interactive pdf with layers. In Acrobat I then make these 'pop-ups' visible then invisible when hovered over/moved away from respectively. I was at the finished stage, all interactive elements that couldn't be set in InDesign had been meticulously added in Acrobat. Twice now, however, my client has made a small change to one of the pages that has several of these layer effects on it and each time I replace the page in Acrobat I have to re-do all the interactive parts. My question is: Is there a way you can replace a page in Acrobat and retain the layer interactivity that existed on the original, outgoing page? It seems impossible as whether I delete the page first and insert the new one in its place, or alternatively do a straightforward 'replace', the outgoing page's layers are deleted with the page and the incoming page's layers come in - but with none of the interactivity. I have to set it all up again. Bear in mind these are interactive events that can only be set up in Acrobat, not in InDesign, and I suspect that's where the problem lies. The new completely wipes out the old. Does anyone have any advice on a work-around for this - or should I just go and open the wine early, take a deep breath and re-do all the interactivity for the third time? What is the best way to work on photographs, editing them, and preparing for print if I can't save layers as .jpg or non-layered .tiffs? The photo lab I will be using does not allow layered .tiff. I have seen many videos that show how to let's say enhance eyes using layers, but in this video it says that .jpg cannot be used. I am new to photography and PSE an would like to know if there is an alternative way to edit an image that can be saved as .jpg. Thank you!

If I have a *.indb document created in CS6, populated with InDesign documents from CS6, what to do, if I want to migrate my workflow to the latest version of InDesign CC-2014?
Short answer (avoiding trouble and headaches):
1. Convert all your InDesign documents from CS6 to CC-2014 (*)
2. Use NEW document file names for all your CC-2014 InDesign file types: *indd, *indt, *indl
3. Build your *indb documents for CC-2014 anew.
4. Use NEW document file names for CC-2014 InDesign file type: *indb
But isn't that a tedious task to do?

Is it possible to work with layers (Draw Layer) when you want

Of course you can use layers with tables. Just work in
Standard mode, not
layout mode to do that. And please take the time to learn
about layers

Working with CorelDraw into Indesign

I am trying to work with a manual that i am converting into Indesign. This particular file has 6 pages that have tables or multiple layers, how do I convert this to Indesign? I am at a loss, any help would help. I tried using a pdf but it won't let me either. Thanks!

There is no way to bring a file from CorelDraw into InDesign as an editable entity. Your best bet is probably to either export to .eps and edit in Illustrator (or .ai if your version supports it directly), or to export the individual graphical elements and place those, then rebuild the text in ID.

Can photoshop elements work with layers/on a Mac?

I would like to purchase photoshop elements 11 if the program allows you to work in layers. I use to have photoshop 7 but since I changed my computer to a Mac I need a program that is compatible with the Mac. Is photoshop elements 11 compatible? Photoshop Elements 11 is definitely available for the Mac.
And it definitely has layers.
If you want, you can download the trial which is the complete version but only works for 30 days. You can then judge if you like it and then buy it.

Action recorded using RAW open step will not work with layered PSDs

Hello,
The title says it all.
I have an action for resizing photos (and some other things), that I want to make general enough to work on NEF's, JPG's and PSD's. When I recorded the action I used a NEF file and the action works great also for JPEGs and also PSDs that don't have layers. When running the action on a layered PSD, the step immediately after the "open" step fails, no matter what it is. For example, if it's "hue/saturation", I get the error "hue/saturation not available".
So I was thinking that the image should be first flattened so I added 2 additional steps just after the open: one to add a dummy 0-opacity layer and another step to flatten the image. But no matter what, I keep getting an error at the step after the open: "new adjustment layer not available" or the like.
I'm thinking that the problem is with the open step actually. For some reason, the o CameraRaw open step is unable to produce a suitable image out of a layered PSD.
Is there a workaround for this? Thanks!

However, I am still puzzled as to how the programme can detect lack of time code when the tape was not even rewound or played. I belive the time code is written on the tape.
Anyway, I tried iMovie and found that the programme detects the camera and controls it. However, it does not recognise the downconverted DV signal. When I turned the DV conversion off, the video was detected and imported using MagicMovie in HD. I still have not gone round to burning on a DVD. ( I only read the article mentioned by Sue after having tried the iMovie programme - somehow the link that was so clearly stated in the reply missed my notice earlier on).
I have actually recorded the downconverted DV video on a standalone Phillips DVD recorder but the DVD only plays in that recorder and my Mac DVD Player even tho I have finalised the +R disk. The same problem occurs with a +RW disk.

Help needed working with layers and exporting from acrobat3d

hi, i am repostng this message becaus eihad no success last time, and I am working under a tight deadline for a school project. any help will be tremendously appreciated
I received an Acrobat 3d file with a model that was originally created in CATIA v4 embedded in it.
I need to export the model for use in rhino. Currently the model size is enormous as an IGES that Windows runs out of memory when attempting to open. This is a bit wasteful since I do not need all of the model, I just need a layer of it. I noticed that when exporting to IGES you have the option to export hidden or not, and I have hidden the layers i do not need (via Isolation) and still I get the whole file.
Is there a way I can do this? export the file With the layers under the model tree? or is there a way I can delete a layer? or how can I make the hidden object feature work when Exporting IGES as not to get the things I dont need?
I read that you can open the model in Toolkit to edit it but it wont let me, open it... no "edit 3d in toolkit" option and when i open the pdf in toolkit it says unknown file....
is there a way i can open the embedded model in CATIA again?

Working with images in Indesign

I am a whole month into my first Tech Writing position and I am quickly losing what's left of my hair.
I am working on a document that was put together by my predecessor. It is a simple application note for a new software feature and has multiple images in it. Pretty basic formatting; image below the text refering to it, centered. The images have been placed with a text wrap (jump object). My problem comes when editing or replacing the text above the image. The image will stay in it's orientation to the page while the text continues to move. For example.
The document starts as:

XXXXXXXXXXX
image
I want to change it to:
XXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXX
image
But I am getting:
XXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXX
image
XXXXXXXXXXX
I realize that I may be asking for the impossible, but nothing ever changes when we just accept the status quo.

You can paste the image back into the text as an anchored object. Simple.

Why do lines appear faint when working with layers?

I'm drawing using a Cintiq and using layers. When the image is then flattened, the lines become much blacker. I don't want the line quality to look different when in layers than when flattened. When I work in Sketchbook Pro, it looks exactly the same in layers as when it is flattened or saved as a jpeg, so why does Photoshop behave this way? Is there a way to fix this in Photoshop? I'm hoping so because it's a real deal breaker for using Photoshop to draw.

Perhaps it because Photoshop is not displaying the transparency grid and you perceive your lines darker when displayed on a white background. That is the same thing that happens when you flatten a document. Empty and transparent pixels become 100% opaque because a background layer does not support transparency. If the canvas default color is white. White is added to all pixels till the pixels are 100% opaque. You may perceive the change in contrast as your lines becoming darker.
Here is a screen capture of your example with white remove. One copy with no background the other over a white background.

Canvas blacking out when working with layers or shapes

Whenever I create a shape on my canvas, or I use a shape as a clipping mask, the entire canvas blacks out and I can't see anything until I click off to the side, in the workspace, so none of my layers are selected. This has happened when I have dropped items onto my canvas and am moving them around, as well.
it will flicker back and forth between showing me the actual image and just being black.
I have no idea what is causing this or how to fix it.

Thank you!!! That was the issue. For those looking in the future who need the steps:
In Photoshop,click on Edit>Preference >Performance
On the right side you will see an option of graphics processor settings. Click on advance settings and if the drawing mode is advanced, change it to basic and click Ok.
Then close and re-launch the program.

has anyone seen "the mirrors" trailer? is that possible to reproduce with FCE4? i have a clip that has a similar idea - girl sitting next to the mirror. instead of what the mirror is reflecting, i want to show scenes of her past. how would i do that in fce>>

You'll need to plan and shoot you shots very carefully. But assuming you've already done that and are ready for post:
Place one clip on V1 in the Timeline.
Place the opposing clip on V2.
Apply a garbage matte to the clip on V2 and align the matte's points to show only the image area you want.
Feather the edge of the matte as needed to blend the two images.
