Working with libraries/catalogs in Photoshop Lightroom

So, you have a question or two or three about Lightroom Libraries/Catalogs. Not to worry, Adobe have provided a  TechNote , which is aimed at addressing questions such as:
Note: with the introduction of Lightroom version 1.1 Adobe have replaced the term "Library" with "Catalog"
1. How many files can I have in my library?
2. What is the largest photo size I can import into Photoshop Lightroom?
3. Can I have more than one library?
4. Can I store my library on a network drive?
5. How can I use my library on multiple computers, such as a laptop and a desktop?
6. How do I move photos from one library to another library?
7. How can I back up my library?
8. How can I transfer images from my hard disk to an external hard disk or to a CD/DVD when I run out of space? What happens to my library if I do this?

If you want to work on the frames of a movie in Photoshop, you have a few options. One is to render and export a composition from After Effects as an image sequence, and work on the frames as individual images in Photoshop. Another approach is tor ender and export the composition as a QuickTime movie and then import tha into Photoshop; this requires Photoshop Extended.
These options are covered in a bit more detail in "Working with After Effects and Photoshop".

Yes - they will work together.
However, the Camera Raw versions will not match - meaning you may have to render your file into a tiff to bake-in your LR Settings before passing the file to PS CS5,

  • MMXcore essentials does not work with this version of photoshop

I am using photoshop essentials 12.
It was working fine and all of a sudden I got an error
Saying MMxcore essentials doesn't work with this
version of Photoshop? I have job to finish and can't get into
photoshop. Can anyone help me fix this remotely?
    thanks in advance

Which operating system are you using?
Did you copy/move any plugins from older photoshop elements versions to the pse 12 editor plugins folder?
Did you point the Additional Plugins under Preferences>Plugins to an older version of photoshop elements?
That MMXCore.plugin (mac) or MMXCore.8BX (windows) is an adobe plugin and only the version installed with pse 12, works with pse 12.

  • Lr Mobile. Working with various Catalogs. Picture on portal are erased when Catalogs Backed to external HD and removed from MacBook.

So I work with various Catalogs on my MacBook. I believe most everyone has the same workflow. Creating Catalogs are a great way to improve the performance of Lr and a great tool for archiving.
The problem is the following: When backing up these Catalogs to an external HD and removing the Catalog from the MacBook. All of the pictures synched to Lr Mobile from these Catalogs are erased.
This is uncool. I think Lr Mobile at the very least should display a low quality JPG as Lr Desktop application does.
Here is a toke, I noticed on my iPhone that even though the pictures are gone, my used memory remains high. I tried clearing cache but it didn't move the needle.
So it seems as Lr Mobile knows there were some pictures synched, and recognizes that these pictures are no longer present, but fails to erase them from memory.
    1) Need Low quality JPGs on Lr Mobile to show pictures of your synched catalogs that are not longer the catalogs been worked on.
    2) Lr Mobile (iPhone?) memory issues.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

  • Working with Large files in Photoshop 10

I am taking pictures with a 4X5 large format film camera and scanning them at 3,000 DPI, which is creating extremely large files. My goal is to take them into Photoshop Elements 10 to cleanup, edit, merge photos together and so on. The cleanup tools don't seem to work that well on large files. My end result is to be able to send these pictures out to be printed at large sizes up to 40X60. How can I work in this environment and get the best print results?

You will need to work with 8bit files to get the benefit of all the editing tools in Elements.
I would suggest resizing at resolution of 300ppi although you can use much lower resolutions for really large prints that will be viewed from a distance e.g. hung on a gallery wall.
That should give you an image size of 12,000 x 18,000 pixels if the original aspect ratio is 2:3
    Use the top menu:
Image >> Resize >> Image Size

  • Working with different catalogs

I am working with LR1.3.1 with Windows Vista.
When working in LR I have tried creating a new catalog and have tried export in to a catalog. Every time I do either, when I go to the created catalogs I cannot see any images. I must be missing something really basic but cant figure it out.
Any ideas of what is wrong or what I may be doing wrong?
    Thanks

No idea, but if you outline exactly what steps you took, we can help.

  • Working with libraries and setting up on two computers

I have been trying Lightroom on my PC and just now took the plunge and bought it (for home use: family and amateur photography). I have installed it on both the PC and laptop (Mac). Sadly the first time I tried using 1.2 having been using 1.0 and 1.1 it said there was a problem reading the library and had to check it... a bit scary...
I am trying to work out how to set-up my system. I intend to have files on an external drive which I can then move from Mac to PC as necessary (i.e. only using one at a time): the PC is mine, the Mac is my wifes, and this seems to be the only way of allowing us to share the photos in a way which is not hugely complicated and confusing.
Any changes we make to the photos on each machine should be visible on the other. From my understanding, that means the library has to be on the external drive, not just the image files?
At the moment the image files and library are on my PC internal drive, imported "at their present location". Is it possible to change the kind of import (to move the image files directly into the library)? Of course it is possible to re-import from scratch, but as there are keywords already organised, and some files have been edited in PS I would lose all that, wouldn't I? Is there a more sophisticated way of changing how the files are organised?
And when I get the external drive, can I just move the libraries and image files and then tell Lightroom about the move, or is it going to be more difficult than that?
    thanks in advance
    Nic

Reading over your message, I am a little unclear about how far along you are in sharing your LightRoom setup with the Laptop. I am going to assume that right now Lightroom and the pictures are both on the PC and on an internal Hard Drive. And except for the scary message you had at the beginning of changing to ver 1.2, everything is working ok. Yes?
What I'd do is wait until you get the external drive up and working. Once you are satisfied that the system works ok, and you have tested it with whatever diagnostic software you use, you are ready to start moving your images to the new drive.
Do a good backup of your images to your backup drive.
Move them to the hard drive from within Lightroom: Use the '+' symbol in the heading of the Folders panel to tell LR to add a new folder from the external drive to the LR folders panel, and then drag and drop the folders already in LR over to their new home.
This way the LR Catalog will always know where the files are.
Then when you are sure that all the image files are on the external drive and LR sees them all and everything is working correctly, exit from LR and copy the catalog file over there.
I used to use windows systems, although I converted to Mac a few years ago. You should be able to double-click on that catalog file that is on the external drive and it should start Lightroom and you should be good to go.
I just used the word "should" three times meaning I'm not really positive about that last step; if I'm wrong I hope someone on a PC will post a correction.
Once it is working OK on the PC with the external drive Load LR on the Laptop.
    Best Wishes!

  • Working with Character Styles in Photoshop CC

    Hi,
I upgraded to Photoshop CC and was quite excited about the Character Styles Panel. But now, I'm completely puzzled.
It almost looks like Adobe didn't finish the feature before shipping 14.1.2
    1. I can't reorder the character list? Why use a different list implementation than that for "Layer Comps?"
    2. I want to copy and paste a character style from one selection to another (Basically the workflow from Apple Keynote). It should be possible with character styles, but it just didn't work:
      - I select a formatted text section
       - I press "New Character Style icon"
       - I double-click the new style -> The font-size in the style differs from the font-size of the orginal selection?!
       - I'm pretty sure it has to do with style of the original text not being directly overwritten from "None", but there is no feature to "bake" style-formatting either.
    3. I can't remove and restyle the Character-Style "None". But when I accidently assign "None", it is defined as 12px Arial Black . So the default-style HAS a style definition and should therefore be editable like the other character styles.
I'm completely blow away how non-intuitive the whole process is. I never had problems to understand character styles in InDesign, Pages, Word and Illustrator. But in Photoshop is either completely broken or non-intuitive.
    Just my two cents.

Your sure your using photoshop cc on windows vista?
I was under the impression that photoshop cc would not even install on windows vista.
What version of camera raw do you have?
In photoshop under Help>About Plugin does it list Camera Raw and if so which version is it?
(click on the words Camera Raw to see the version)
Camera raw doesn't work if it's a camera raw file or some other file type such as jpeg or tif?
What camera are the camera raw files from?
Officially camera raw 8.3 is the latest version of camera raw that will work on windows vista.

  • How to work with Product Catalogs that have multiple levels

I'm having difficulty understanding how to go about setting up a catalog site with multiple levels in the hierarchy. For example, the standard walkthroughs will display product categories and products. When the product category page is viewed, it displays
a list of products. That's fine.
I would like to have categories, sub-categories, and products. For example:
    1. Bicycles
      a. Road Bikes
      b. Mountain Bikes
    2. Clothing
      a. shirts
      b. shorts
The top level landing page should list all categories. Clicking on a category should take the user to a page that lists all sub-categories for that category. How are these landing pages created? It's simple to display the list of products in a sub-category,
as that's just a content search. But how do I generate a list of subcategories (or categories) dynamically, without having to manually create a page for each one?
Also, each category / subcategory should have it's own metadata, such as description, contact info, etc.
    Thanks,
    Mike G.

after you connect to a product catalog in site settings->manage catalog connections in a publishing site, page layouts and pages will created automatically for you in the publishing site. for a simple test, you can just leave everything to it's default
value when you connect to a catalog. you can find address for these page created in site settings->term store management tool, click on the term under your site collection group, and open the term-driven pages.

  • Could not load the mmxcore routines module because it does not work with this version of photoshop?

I'm getting the above message when starting Photoshop CC 2014. Click OK & it loads fine but just a little annoying. Seems to have happened since the Aug 5 update. Photoshop shows as version 14.0.0 release although CC App shows it as up to date. Should it not be version 14.1 ?

According to Adobe - see here: Adobe Photoshop CC new features | Buy Photoshop CC   'Photoshop CC 14.2' was released on Jan 15th 2014 but the latest version released on 5 August 2014 is 'Photoshop CC (2014.1)'
As far as I'm aware, after 14.2 , releases were name '2014 release' so the 2014.1 release is indeed the latest version - there have been two updates since 14.2.1
However, this still doesn't explain why mine has shows as 14.0.0 and 'up to date'  Anyone know how I can get it to update to the latest version??
