Working with Multimedia within RoboHelp 8

Is RoboHelp compatible with many types of multimedia files?
We are looking into some freeware that allows us to create video - it is called
FastStone Capture - not sure what kind of output it creates for video... but just
wondering if RoboHelp accepts many different outputs for video....

RoboHelp is pretty flexible. Pretty much what you can do on a web page you can do with RoboHelp.
The key point with video is that if you are inserting via RoboHelp, it likes the video file to be in the same folder as the page using it.

ITunes Not Working with Multimedia Keyboard... help?

I recently installed a new keyboard and mouse software, where the keyboard is a multimedia keyboard. Since that, I've been unable to get any SOUND from anything playing in iTunes, whereas the sound for my computer and any other audio/video programs works fine.
I've tried fooling around with the multimedia buttons on the keyboard, but nothing helps this..
Can someone help me? I want to get back to using my iTunes!

Working with items within groups

With nearly all primary Adobe CS applications they offer a way to modify individual items within a group without ungrouping the item. Both Illustrator and InDesign in CS5.5 enable to doubleclick on the group which enters a mode were that item is isolated and only the contents within can be modified. As far as I can tell the only options to do this in Fireworks is to:
* Ungroup and then regroup, which is not ideal because you loose the name of the group and you have to reselect each item again afterwards to regroup
* Use the sub selection tool, which is also not ideal because it dose not allow you to target sub groups as items
Can anybody else confirm this behavior?

You can also, instead of grouping the objects, convert them to a Symbol (Select all, then Modify > Symbol > Convert to Symbol > Graphic. The objects will then behave as a group. You can edit individual items in the group by opening the symbol in the Symbol editor. To open the Symbol editor, simply double click on it.

Table contained in a topic causes slow response when working with source

I am using RoboHelp V8.0.2 (I have applied the two fixes available from the Adobe product site).
Here is my issue:
I am documenting a product that has over 1,500 metrics.
I am trying to make a list of 1,077 metrics in one topic (all the metrics are of the same "type" so they are grouped together).
The table presenting these metrics has two columns, a Field Name column and a Description column.
There is not a lot of text within the table - most of the explanations and calculations are defined outside the table.
When I have more than about 400 table rows, the response time working with the topic in source is just horrible.
It took 3 minutes to open the topic in source, another 3 minutes to move the table over .425in from margin.
When I try to close the project, it gets hung up.
Has anyone else run into a problem working with tables within a topic?
I had a similar response time issue with V8.0.0 in general when I first installed it.
Once I installed the two fixes, that problem was (for the most part) eliminated.
I think the second fix specifically addressed response time issues when working in source.
I am going to try this on one of my other writer's machine to see if it is the age of my computer.
My computer setup is:
Dell Precision work station with an Intel Xeon 2.40GHZ processor and 2MB of RAM.
I am using Windows XP Professional 5.1.26 Service Pack 3.0.
I have a 110 GB hard drive with 18 GB available.

Hi Michael.
Interestingly the maximum number of rows you can use when you create a table via the Table > Insert > Table menu item is 100. That said, I've just created a 500 row table and whilst it is slower than a smaller table it is OK. I am also using RH 8.0.2 but on a higher spec PC.

How do I make my multimedia keys work with iTunes?

I just bought a new Dell XPS L502X laptop and i realize that the multimedia keys only work with iTunes when the window is open. I was wondering if it would be possible to use these commands even when the window is not open.

You are correct in some of your assertions, Limnos but, if I were to follow Apple's wishes, I would have to purchase the latest and greatest Apple product every month! I refuse to do that. I understand that my G4 is old but, it does what I need it to do. To answer your question though, I purchased the iPod classic as a refurbished unit, about 5 years ago and had it replaced three times, since then so, there is no way for me to know how old it is.
From my knowledge of how the Classics work(which is extensive.) It is basically a hard disk. There should be of performing a low level format, plug it back in and the G4 should recognize the ROm and automatically search for the correct software associated with that version of iPod and load it but, Apple will most likely no longer carry the software on their servers anymore!(surprise,surprise.)

Access denied errors while working with RoboHelp Explorer

We get strange errors sometimes when we're working with
RoboHelp Explorer. We recently upgraded to RoboHelp 6.0, and since
then, these errors started appearing.
When compiling a project, or saving, or even just browsing to
a new section in the existing Word files (using the RoboHelp
Explorer), this message appears "Saving could not be completed
because of a sharing violation error" (roughly translated from the
Swedish message "Det gick inte att slutföra Spara på
grund av ett filtillståndsfel (c:\...\Mallar\Robohelp.dot)").
When we log out and log in again, it works fine for a while,
but then the message reappears after a while.
Any ideas? The user in question is running this from a
Terminal Services server.

Welcome to the forum.
RH is designed to be installed on and run from the user's PC.
Indeed the licence requires that it is installed with the user's
logon and that the user has admin rights. See the topic about
installation on my site.
Ordinarily I would say the problem was to do with running it
from a Terminal Services Server as presumably those requirements
had not been met but it looks like you had it running OK before.
Thus I am a bit puzzled. Maybe something I have said will remind of
how you installed it before?
Also projects must normally be run from the user's local
drive. Network projects often give problems as RH was not designed
to work that way.
Does the OS language need to be set to English? Not sure if
that would be an issue.
Sorry I cannot give you anything specific and hope you are
able to resolve it.

RoboHelp for Word installed from RoboHelp 10 won't work with Word 2010

I have a Help project created in RoboHelp for Word 8. I recently upgraded from Word 2007 to Word 2010 and discovered that RH8 for Word won't work with Word 2010. So I purchased RoboHelp 10 and have installed RoboHelp for Word from it. Alas, RH for Word STILL won't work with Word 2010. When I try to open my project, I get this message:
Before I bought RH10, I live-chatted with an Adobe sales person who assured me it was compatible with Word 2010.
BTW, I tried to roll back to Word 2007, but I was getting weird behavior running Word, so I have reinstalled Word 2010 and want to stay there.
Any ideas?

I have just installed Rh10 for Word on a new machine and initially I got this message.
I wonder if you have followed those instuctions? I changed the setting to Enable All.
The other possibility is what do you have set for the default version? If it is 2007 and that no longer exists on your machine, then Rh will not be able to proceed. The dropdown should show 2010

Mac Multimedia Transfer app not working with N95 8...

I'm using the latest 1.2 version of the Multimedia Transfer app, but it does not recognize the phone via bluetooth nor USB. When trying to setup a device in the Multimedia Transfer app I see my phone listed in the device list, but it's grayed-out and has "(not supported)" in parenthesis. See screenshots via Flickr below. I can get iSync working with my N95 8GB phone just fine, so I know it can connect via bluetooth.

Working with Oracle Multimedia Types ORDSYS.ORDDOC

Using the "Oracle Fusion Developer Guide" page 404 Working with Oracle Multimedia Types by Frank Nimphius and Lynn Munsinger. I tried to replicate the solution in a sample app. My upload works as said when I place the VO as a ADF Form.
Now I wanted to replicate the same while placing the VO as a ADF Table, where user has an option of creating 1 or more records.
I have made the following changes to the pageDef. and jspx

I thought this was because of my table, so made my table read only and had the users navigate to a pop up with a form where one of the fields has the CustomInputHandler="OrdDomainValueHandler". This appears to work fine when the first file is attached. However, if I go to another record and try to attach a file, I get the error you menioned again.
Were you able to resolve this? If yes, do you mind sharing your solution/work around?

Creating AWT child dialog within a parent hangs in 1.7 but works with 1.6

Hi,
We are making use of Java AWT packages. In which we are creating an child dialog within a parent window and it hangs, meaning none of the buttons on the child window works, even the close is not happening (parent, child and console all hangs, need to kill the applet from the task manager). No error/exception is seen in the Console. No deadlocks noticed in the thread dumps.
This is seen only with JRE1.7 (update 10,11,13,15) version. But the same code is working fine with JRE 1.6 version.
We also have same codebase of next release, where the code is changed to Swings and that seems to work with JRE1.7.
Can somebody suggest me what might be causing it to fail with JRE_1.7 at the earliest as this a critical issue.

We have a tuxedo service which needs to communicate with a POS device by socket. The parent process provides the tuxedo service. The child process provides the connection management for the device. Unnamed pipe is used for communication between the parent and the child. In the child process, there is no code related to tuxedo. The benefit of that design is the tuxedo server does not need to wait for connection from the device when boots up, and the tuxedo service does not need to wait for connection from the device when the service is called.
The tuxedo server was developed 10 years ago, and worked fine till we upgraded tuxedo from 10 to 12 recently. That means it worked for 10 years, and it worked in tuxedo 6.5, tuxedo 10. But in tuxedo 12, tmboot does not return for this tuxedo server. We have to press CTRL-C and yes to cancel. After cancel, the tuxedo service seems working fine.

Working with many different formats/codecs/frame rates within one Sequence.

As an editor for an ad agency I am being tasked with cutting a demo reel together. Nothing too difficult.
The reel is to include video footage of past projects, going back a couple years or so. The footage that I will be given will undoubtably be in a variety of formats, codecs, frame sizes, frame rates, etc (all SD, though). Delivery is SD DVD.
My question is this:
What is the best way to set up my timeline for a barrage of clips with differing specs?
Do I encode all the media assets FIRST to conform to my Sequence Settings? Or do I just deal with the large amounts of timeline rendering as I work with different formats and codecs? Or do I....?
I am running FCP 5.1.4, so I don't have the Open Timeline feature going for me.

Your final format is NTSC SD DVD, so you're going to have to go to 720x480 at some point. This is what I would upscale to. Make sure your "client" knows that the 320x240 wmv's may not look to good in the final production.
Personally I use MPEG Streamclip (an excellent FREE application that's part of many a pro's arsenal) for this kind of conversion and/or upscaling. It's not particularly intuitive (especially for upscaling) so read the manual.
You may need to get hold of Flip4Mac or Episode for the wmv conversions.
I would tend to convert to a lossless codec like Apple Uncompressed or Animation. You could try going to NTSC-DV but you're going to lose some quality initially and again when you do the final mpeg2 compression.
Experiment.

You should never use relative paths to access the filesystem. The path would be relative to the current working directory which is not per se the same in all environments. To convert a relative web path to an absolute file system path, you need ServletContext#getRealPath(). Use this absolute file system path in the java.io stuff. In a JSF application on top of Servlet API you can get the underlying ServletContext by ExternalContext#getContext().
Alternatively, if the file is located in one of the default paths of the classpath or if its path is added to the classpath, you can also just use ExternalContext#getResource() or even #getResourceAsStream() using just the file name.
