Working with Nested Sequences

I'm working with a 1 hour, 20 minute multi-cam (2 cameras) Sequence of a concert, with many edits. One of the music pieces was complicated, so I separated it out into a separate Sequence, and did the editing. Later, my occasional fcp tutor created a new nested Sequence, into which he transferred the separated piece. The nested Sequence is exactly the same length as the original Sequence.
Since the two cameras required different kinds of Color Correction, we did this in the nested Sequence. Then we exported the nested Sequence as a self-contained QT file. O.K. so far.
But then later, after my tutor has gone, I realize that I don't understand nested Sequences. When I double click on the nested Sequence in the timeline, I'm taken back to the whole concert Sequence in the timeline, out of which the nested Sequence was created. So, Question #1: I can't adjust the audio in a nested Sequence? Question #2: Now, I realize I need chapter markers and I create them in the original whole Sequence, but too bad, they don't appear in the nested Sequence (which has the color correction that I want). How can I transfer my newly created chapter markers in the nested Sequence so that I can now re-export it with the chapter markers?
Thanks, Robert

1. Duplicate the 'whole' sequence (The one with the chapter markers)
Give the duplicate an obvious name. Like "FinaL WITH CHAPTER MARKERS".
2. Delete all clips in this duplicate sequence. (Command-A, then Backspace)
The chapter markers will remain. Don't alter the original sequence in any way!
3. Go to the nested sequence. Copy Everything (Command A, then Command C)
4. Go to the (now empty) Duplicate sequence. Paste (Command V)

  • Problem when working with multiple sequences

    Dears,
    In order to make life easier (I am currently working on a rather long project), I work with multiple sequences, one per chapter.
    My problem: I named one sequence "assembly sequences" in order to add the various sequences. I dropped the sequence no 1, then no 2. All works fine, beside that when playing the sequence no 2, I see two black lines on top and bottom of the screen for the all length of the sequence. Which is not the case when I click on the sequence itself and play it independently.
    Any idea how to solve this ?
    Thanks
    Nic

    Thanks, what happened is that :
    1st sequence is like this : Frame size 720x576 pixels, video rate 25fps, Compressor DV-Pal. And I think it is the one appropriate for me and my country.
    2nd sequence is like this : Frame size 720x480 pixels,
    video rate 29.97 fps, Compressor DV-DVPRO-NTSC.
    I think I should change the second sequence setting, but can I do it after all the work I have done, and continue making a 3rd, 4th and so on ?
    Tx for your precious help,
    Nicolas

  • Time remapping / slow motion extremely jumpy with nested sequence!

    I have just finished the rough-cut of a ceremony when I went back to add effects-- slow motion, color correct, etc. only to find that ANY time-change is jittery-- extremely jittery, like it's skipping frames.
    For trial purposes I created a new timeline with only one video clip placed multiple times. I reduced one to 50% with frame-blending, the other 50% with NO frame-blending and the final using time re-mapping with frame-blending. At 50% I don't expect fluid movement, but they are all acceptable... Until I put a different timeline in the timeline (I think it's a "nested sequence").
    When speed is slowed on ANY nested sequence it is jittery. Whether it is a single nested sequence or a multi-camera sequence, it jumps.
    Has anyone else had this problem?! Is this a bug? I never noticed it until this wedding. I am using CS3 and I cannot afford the time to re-edit this ceremony with 2.0.... Unless I have no choice.

    Hi Wil,
    I have tried using both. Time remapping on the clip (not nested) works fine, so does 'speed change.' But both time remapping and speed change result in jumpy frames when applied to a nested sequenced clip.
    I tried this on another (much lower system) and have found the same results. I am begining to think it is the footage but it seems odd that it is perfect when applied to a clip in the timeline but NOT to a timeline in the timeline (nested).
    I am on vacation and do not have access to a faster machine until next late next week but for now I will try the export again to be sure Encore sees the same thing.
    I am dumbfounded because I had been using 1.5, then 2.0 and now CS3 for weddings for years and have never noticed this. I have noticed it on the both the last project and now this current one.
    I thought it could have been the original footage (or a camera problem except that the problems are not there until a nested sequence comes along. I will try moving the footage to my internal drive now and see what happens...
    Thank you so far for giving me ideas.

  • Video effects not working on nested sequences in Premiere Pro CS5

    Hi -
    I am having some trouble with Premiere ProCS5. I have a project with a few clips which I put together in one sequence. I put this sequence into another sequence. There I will add one or two tracks of additional images and apply color correction.
    The problem is: None of the video effects I drag onto the sequence (which now is a nested sequence) have any effect. Whatever I change in the effect controls will not sho up in the monitor. Audio effects do work, though. Furthermore, none of the tracks above the nested clip are displayed. To clarify: The nested track is on V1, another clip is on V2 and an image is on V3. Only V1 gets displayed.
    I know this is supposed to work and it actually does in another project created in the same version on the same machine with the same kind of material. But no matter how often I create a new project, applying video effects to a nested sequence just does not work.
    Even more strange is the fact that my applied effects DO show up in the "Export Settings" window. They DON'T, however, in the final rendered file. I would suggest this is a bug.
    What could be the reason for this behaviour?

    It can help if you Toggle Track Output to ON. The visibility icon on the left side on each track.

  • EDL and OMF from a timeline with nested sequences

    I have a short film which I want to send for a conform and as OMF for a sound mix.
    Only thing is, I'm making use of the neat way you can edit sequences separately and then place those sequences on a timeline. The problem is, when I output an OMF or EDL from this assembly, all I get is references to the sequences themselves (I.E. only 6 clips)!
    What could possibly be the use of this? Surely this is just a dumb oversight by the makers of the program? Does anyone know any way around it apart from just sticking everything on one timeline?
    If there is no other way, then surely nesting sequences is just a big waste of time?

    OK...I am imagining I am editing a feature film using an Avid. And in this imagining I notice that Avid too has a nesting feature called COLLAPSE. And in sequences that have been collapsed, EDLs and Cut Lists don't reference the clips inside the collapsed area. I now imagine I am working on a network TV series (cop drama, on for 13+ years), also on an Avid, and there too, collapsed sequences don't spit out proper EDLs.
    I find this funny since Avid has the best media management in the world...but.
    Now I am imagining me or my assistant (when I get to be the big editor I'll have the assistant do it...but now I am the assistant so it is ME doing it) going thru the sequences and EXPANDING THEM to show all the clips so that a proper online can occur.
    I imagine you have to do the same with FCP. But I am new to the program, so I am not sure. Wait...wait...wait. I did a test. Yes, my imagination is VERY good. I have to do what was suggested...open the nest and copy/paste that onto the main timeline.
    Mom always said I had a wild imagination.
    Nesting or collapsing your sequences are done to add filters to multiple clips, like letterboxing or color correction. When you output an EDL, you don't need that, so the nest is MOOT.
    Reflect...take note. Do it manually.
    Tom.

  • Trouble with nesting sequences

    Hello.
    The "transparent" elements of my sequences are not preserved when I bring them into another sequence/timeline and apply an effect or motion to it. Is this typical? They appear to be fine, at first, but when they are rendered or exported, the nested sequence has a black background instead of a transparent one. I'm working targa files with transparent elements, which work just fine in their source sequence.
    I apologize if my wording is awkward or if this has been answered elsewhere.

    This is not my experience.
    When I add transparent elements to a sequence and I nest this sequence into another one, transparency is preserved, even after rendering (I can superimpose the sequence with transparent elements to another clip in the timeline, and this appears in the transparent areas).
    Exporting is a different issue. FCE can Export/Quicktime Movie only using DV or HDV codecs that do not preserve transparency. There is a possibility however: you may Export/Using Quicktime Conversion and select the Animation codec which preserves transparency. But before exporting you must make sure that the sequence is not rendered, otherwise the non transparent rendered files will be used (to do that you can make the tracks not Visible and then Visible again, in order to delete the render files; or you can disable and enable again the transparent clips).

  • Links don't work with Browse Sequences

    I have an image that links from one page in my project to
    another. It works fine when I generate my primary layout without
    browse sequences. But when I generate it with browse sequences,
    clicking the image produces a blank page. The only way it will open
    the page is if I set the Hyperlink Options to "Display in
    Autosizing Pop-up". If I leave it set to "Display in Frame (Page
    Default: none)" clicking the image produces a blank page.

    Hello again
    I'm not saying you are full of squash, just that I'm unable
    to duplicate it using my own copy of RoboHelp 6. I tested by
    linking an image to a different topic with no browse sequence in
    the mix. Compiling and testing. Then creating a Browse Sequence and
    recompiling and testing again. Mine worked.
    This is a bit of VooDoo, but you might wish to try defining a
    totally new window, configuring that as the default and compiling
    again. See if that changes things.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Working with many sequences- best practice

    Hi.
    I´ve just started using Adobe Premiere CS6. My goal is to create a 2 hour long movie, based on 30 hours of raw gopro footage recorded on a recent vacation.
    Now my question is, what is the best practice for working with so many sequences/movie clips?
    Do you have one heavy project file, with all the clips?
    Or do you make small chapters that contains x number of sequences/is x minutes long, and in the end combine all these?
    Or how would you do it the best way, so its easiest to work with?
    Thanks alot for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Lars

    I'll answer your second question first, as it's more relevant to the topic.
    You should export in the very highest quality you can based on what you started with.
    The exception to this is if you have some end medium in mind. For example, it would be best to export 30 FPS if you are going to upload it to YouTube.
    On the other hand, if you just want it as a video file on your computer, you should export it as 50 FPS because that retains the smooth, higher framerate.
    Also, if you are making slow-motion scenes with that higher framerate, then export at the lowest framerate (for example, if you slow down a scene to 50% speed, your export should be at 25 FPS).
    About my computer:
    It was for both, but I built it more with gaming in mind as I wasn't as heavily into editing then as I am now.
    Now, I am upgrading components based on the editing performance gains I could get rather than gaming performance gains.

  • Errors with nested sequences

    I have been working on a large project in which I have been nesting sequences and placing them into one master timeline.
    When I update my nested sequences, the master sequence does not reflect the new changes. For example, I deleted an audio track in one of the nested sequences, but the audio track still plays in the master sequence.
    My master sequence used to update when I made changes to the nested sequences, but this problem has only occurred recently.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    If your audio is mixed down it's likely playing the mixdown back in the rendered sequence. Is that what is happening? However I've not tried it to see if it's a bug. I don't nest audio tracks myself.
    Audio mixdowns are transparent in the timeline too unfortunately.
    Do video changes also not show up?

  • Working With Nested XML Data

    Hello,
    I'm doing my best to create a page in Dreamweaver CS4 utilizing Spry datasets and, I hope, a valid nested XML file. What I want to do is use one XML file that provides the content for my nav div and my content div. It would, in essence, display as an outline. When a user clicks on an item in the nav div the content would be displayed. What I'm guessing would work for the XML file would be this format:
    <content>
      <topic name="Elements">   //--this would serve as the nav element and trigger
        <header>Non-editable</header>   //--this would serve as a header in the content area
        <info>
          <detail id="1">CSS, javascript</detail>   //--this would serve as detail under the headers in the content area.
          <detail id="2">Headers</detail>
          <detail id="3">Footers</detail>
          <detail id="4">Areas within navigation panel</detail>
        </info>
      </topic>
    </content>
    I got the idea from this page in Live Docs: Create a Spry nested data set. Also from a Labs page called Nested XML Data Sample. I've been able to make various parts of the page work but I don't know what is broken. My issues are this:
    I once saw but can no longer find a method for preventing redundant display of data. In this case, the nav elements which are attributes in my XML file.
    The details are showing up in my content area. I must be doing the code for the nesting incorrectly.
    I want to then use the details in the content area to trigger spry tooltips, the content for whih would be genereated from an XML file or HTML frags.
    Here is my latest, ill-fated attempt:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

    Thoughts? My hope is to distill this process so I can teach others how to do it in the hopes that they will find it easier to keep their department/program websites up-to-date.

    I apologize, im using Spry XML Data Set. i guess the best way to describe what im trying to do is, i want to use the Non-desctructive filter sample with the Spry Nested XML Data sample. So with my sample xml on my first post and with the same code non-destructive filter is using, im having trouble trying to search repeating nodes, for some reason it only searches the last node of the repeating nodes. Does that make sense? let me know.
    thank you Arnout!

  • "member of " not working with nested table of dates

    Can someone explain why this doesn't work. The last select does not return any row. When trying the same with a table of number, it works fine.
    drop table test;
    drop type date_tab;
    create type date_tab as table of date;
    create table test(dates date_tab) nested table dates store as dates;
    insert into test values (date_tab(to_date('10-jan-2007'),to_date('15-jan-2007'),to_date('15-jan-2007')));
    commit;
    select * from test where to_date('10-jan-2007') member of dates;
    Line above should find the row, but does not return anything.

    > With 10G Oracle said that these two engines are now sharing the same source code
    Is that documented somewhere? Regarding database versions, it was 9.0.1 that claimed an integrated parser. I don't see any update for 10g.
    > So in the old days one had to do a [SELECT sysdate INTO d FROM dual] to assign a function value to a PL/SQL var - as the function did not exist in PL/SQL.
    Then (from Oracle 7 onwards?) these functions were also available in PL/SQL. However, the two engines did not share common code. So functions in SQL did not always behave like function in PL/SQL and vice versa.
    I don't recall that limitation in PL/SQL v1 (Forms 3 to 4.5, and database v6, though I doubt many people actually used PL/SQL on the database because (1) it was separately licensed, and (2) it didn't have stored procedures) - but then it was a while ago so I could be mistaken.
    I know USER, SYSDATE and others used to be implicit queries of dual (i.e. the supplied PL/SQL function was just a wrapper containing SELECT SYSDATE INTO dt FROM dual; RETURN dt;) although that's probably just confusing the issue.

  • Working with different sequence time-bases in the same Project..

    Hi
    My question is specific but hopefully will clear my understanding of how to deal with multiple frame rates in the one project...
    I am supervising a project shot at 23.98 fps native in the DVCPro HD codec and editing in FCP 6.02.
    The editor is cutting scenes in separate sequences.
    Unfortunately they accidentally created a new sequence set for DV-NTSC, 29.97 fps and cut a scene in there. FCP must have prompted them about the mistake when the first clip was added... but they ignored it I guess.
    When the scenes are compiled together in a single sequence (23.98fps) the incorrectly formatted DV one is all messed up size wise and aspect ratio (of course).
    How to fix?
    Here's what I've tried and failed at...
    The source DV sequence can't be reset in itself because I can't change the timebase.....
    If the DV sequence's clips are copied and pasted into a new 23.98 sequence the clips are still the wrong size... and there seems no way to change these attributes.
    I tried exporting an EDL for the DV sequence and reimporting and relinking clips in a new 23.98 sequence... but the DV source has more than 2 Video tracks so EDL transfer won't work.
    XML export/import just duplicates the original DV sized sequence..
    I'm probably missing something .... like well, remake a new sequence correctly and re-edit it! But now I'm interested in what I'm missing here.
    Anyone?
    Thanks
    Lee

  • MDT - Custom Reference Image does not work with Task Sequence, normal Windows 7 Enterprise Iso media works fine.

    Hi,
    Our MDT server is acting strange!
    I have previously had this system running without problem - i could both capture and deploy computers as is and no changes have been made to mdt.
    But my latest capture does not work. When i capture my reference maching in my VM environment it completes without errors and i can import the latest wim file.
    When i deploy the tast sequence, it install the custom Wim image, but it ends up with "login" screen as the administrator i have entered for the capture/deploy sequence, but it goes to stop at this point and applications is not installed.
    If i change the ISO in the task sequence under Install OS step, to a clean Win7 install media then the capture completes and install applications.
    I have also tried to:

  • Multichannel audio downmix monitoring / "Map to Dual Mono" disengages when working with another sequence

    I typically like to edit with multichannel / mono audio channels, but monitor audio with regular speakers by way of downmixing. I found the useful "Map to Dual Mono' button in the audio track mixer which allows one to monitor all the split channels mixed. The problem I've encountered is when I switch from the multichannel sequence I'm working in over to a regular sequence with other audio settings, and then go back to the multichannel sequence that I started with. When I do this, the "Map to Dual Mono" button disengages, and I'm not able to monitor the audio in the mixed way I'd like. After pressing the "Map to Dual Mono" button, everything's o.k. again.
    Is there a way that once the "Map to Dual Mono" button is activated, that it stays activated, without having to re-press it again and again?

    mmmm this is an odd one... the only thing I can think of is that you are changing these clips once they're in the timeline. It's done with a keyboard shortcut: option+L... it will change a dual mono track to a stereo pair. You can change these files back though... typing opt+l toggles the condition back and forth.
