Working with offline photos

I have relocated some photos using "Relocate Originals". When they are offline, meaning when the relocated photos are saved in an external hard drive and the drive is not connected, how should I work with those offline photos? For example, is it okay to rotate photos? Is it okay to move offline photos to another folder or project? If I do these, when I reconnected the external hard drive, what would happen?

You cannot make adjustments, print, or export Images whose Originals are off-line.
You can move them within Aperture; assign ratings, keywords, and any other metadata; and export the Image's Preview.

  • Lightroom 5: All photos now "Error working with this photo"

I went back to my lightroom catelog, where a lot of my photos are all on my NAS, and now all the photos are unable to be edited. "There was an error working with this photo."
Everything was working for awhile, but now every single photo is erroring out.
In the finder, i still see the photos perfectly fine. I even opened up the good 'ol Photo Mechanic 5 and opened a contact sheet, and these photos still worked. So it's not like they're corrupted or completely gone.
I created another new lightroom catelog, and tried to import the photos again. But when I select the directory the photos are in, it's empty for about 10 minutes, then shows all the photos but with "Preview unavailable for this file."
The big caveat are all these photos are on a networked NAS (Synology). I'm accessing it over WiFi which is probably the biggest problem.
The folder was mounted as a NFS folder. It was disconnected once when I had a power outage (damn wind). I since re-mounted the folder and all that. I'm not entirely sure if that's what did it or if these errors started happening after that or not. But I've moved photos to my NAS folder in my catalog just today, and they are now erroring as well. So it's not like the older ones are erroring. Just all of them are.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but there are lots of messages in the forums about Lightroom problems specifically related to Synology NAS.
Have you spoken to Synology about this?

I don't know the answer, personally, because I don't use Lightroom. This is the Camera Raw forum.

    hello.....
can anyone pls help me out working with offline databases.i have created an offline database in jdeveloper. Now the UI components of my client tier application have to be bound to these attributes of the offline table.....
    how can this be done??

I had same problem months ago and I was finally only able to create adf bc object from an online database, with an active connection. I simply created an oracle instance in my own development machine and I used the database offline objects to synchronize all my objects when the common development database was not accessible. This mean that offline objects my be refreshed when somebody else do a change.

  • "there was an error working with this photo"

I am new to the forums.
I have been using a Windows Vista computer with I believe an older version of LR.  I thinkg it is 4.??
When i would plug in my memory i would use LR to import my pictures and import them to an external hard drive connected to my WiFi router.
I never had a problem with it.
I recently made the move to Apple and got an iMac.  I downloaded and installed LR on my iMac and then imported the photos with no problem.
Now when i try and view the phots they are coming up grainy and getting an error:
" there was an error working with this photo"
I then look down at the thumbnails view and all of them are showing ! in the upper right corner.  So i click on it and get another error:
"Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo.  You will not be able to make adjustments to this photo"
When I look at the import section i get "preview unavaible for this file"
I would say i am a newbie to LR and i really only used it to import and manage my photos.  I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting.
Any and all help would be greatly apprecaited.
    Thanks

Yes. When I am watching, it seems to complete the autowrite in a few seconds after making a change.

    Hi,
The movie is probably MPEG format.
QuickTime Pro and iMovie cannot transcode audio contained in MPEG movies.
Try to convert with SimpleMovieX or MPEG Streamclip instead.

  • All of my photos now have the same photo when I look at them in the viewing area.  I have to actually open the photo itself to see the actual photo.  this makes it impossible to work with the photos in iphoto.  Help!

All of my photos now have the same photo when I look at them in the viewing area. It makes it look as though all of my photos are the exact same! I have to actually open the photo itself to see the actual photo.  this makes it impossible to work with the photos in iphoto.  How can I return it so that I see the photo itself in the preview area? Thank you!

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. This can take three or four goes.

  • Does ipod nano work with ipod photo dock, s-video out?

Does the ipod nano work with the ipod photo dock, with an s-video out? Will apple make one for the nano specifically?

The iPod nano cannot show photos on an external device, I suspect Apple have not built this feature into the hardware. The options for showing to a TV are not in the photo menus either.

  • Universal Dock's remote doesn't work with iPhone Photos

Has anyone tried Universal Dock's remote with iPhone Photos? I can't get it to work.
The remote does work with iPhone music and video though.

i just bought this dock as a car dock. I have it hooked up to power 12v and output to 1/8 into head unit. Now, I have to be in iTunes music to get it to work and it only allows volume, playing of files in a playlist and to next song. Are any of you guys having issues with VERY limited use of the remote and lack of really a benefit from using a remote because you have to touch it anyways to change through songs or video??? Are you guys wondering why you even bought it if the remote is not supported as a functional addition?

  • Does iPhoto 9.6 work with iCloud Photo Library at all?

I have iOs 8.1, but I have not enabled iCloud Drive or iCloud Photo Library yet, and I have not updated to Yosemite yet. I don't want to activate those until I know how photos between thee mac and iPhone will work after they are enabled.
Does iPhoto 9.6 interact at all with iCloud Photo Library? Does it even "see" iCPL photos similar to PhotoStream? Can it import from there? Do any of the crops and edits come through in iPhoto from the iOS photos app (whether imported from the iCPL or even via direct d/l from the phone via usb?

So what are you guys doing to manage your photos until the OSX Photos app come out? Just not using iCloud Photo Library at all I assume?
Can you use iCloud photo library but still manually import photos into iPhoto from USB import?
You can view your iCloud Photo Library (Beta) and download from iCloud Photo Library (Beta) at https://beta.icloud.com  or https://www.icloud.com  on your Mac, if you click the "Photos" icon. Click the "?" mark, to view the help for "Photos". But you cannot yet upload directly from your Mac to this library, even if the iCloud Photos Help is saying otherwise.
You can download to your mac from your devices using USB, but with iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled on your iPad or iPhone, you can no longer sync photos to them using iTunes Photo sync. So it is hard to get any photos onto your devices at the moment, other than using Photo Stream. To upload  photos to your iPad/iPhone using iTunes you have to disable iCloud Photo Library. And the synced photos will be erased, when you enable iCloud Photo Library again.

  • What facilities does Photoshop have in working with Fisheye photos?

Now I am reading that there are 'filters' or available plug-ins for Photoshop that will work with the wow factor and do some straightening for added creative ability with this lens. This is a new untouched area for me.
The thing that is not available in post-production software but is controllable right in the camera is 'horizon' which I know nothing about yet. I hear that you can keep the horizon level if you center it in the composition in the camera? Sounds tricky, but I do see that things 'curve up' or 'curve down' and that happens a the the bottom and at the top of photos in different shots. So, I don't know how to understand what is happening yet, but, again, this lens is so much fun I do want to learn more about working with it.

You'll want to look into the Adaptive Wide Angle filter in Photoshop. It's designed for the correction issues that come up with fisheye lenses in particular. (The Lens Correction feature is great, but it's for more standard focal lengths.)

  • Book or article on FCE working with only photos

Can someone recommend a good book OR article about working with photos and FCE? I mainly make historical DVDs and use photos, not film.

I can't recommend any articles as I have not read any but take a look at these 3 links.
The first 2 are specifically for photos, the other 2 are sites with vast numbers of tutorials which you will have to check out yourself.
Remember that what works for Final Cut Pro will usually work for Final Cut Express.

  • ? Cannot work with I-photo

I loaded Canon file viewer utility and Canon Eos Utility for my EOS digital camera. Since then I cannot load photos from those Utilities into I-Photo and I've lost all use of i-photo including expanding the thumbnails. The thumbnails are still visible. I-photo still opens. Can anybody help?

I have installed the Abobe 7.1, it did not work but showed out of alignments of items previously put thru' it, with no option to add or remove the data. eg folder with CRT photos in it. As I mentioned above I still only have CS3, and the camera is the EOS 600D. When I had the 500D I installed the version 8.3 and it worked fine. It worked up until the update of Win_8. The software which comes with the canon camera only allows to convert I [one] image at a time and it is not fast. Can you offer any further advice please?
I have deleted the version you mentioned and tried the 8.3 again, still does not work. Deleted it also.

  • I failed to register on photoshop in time. How can I work with the  photos I have there?

I already have photos on my computer in Photoshop but I failed to register within the time limit, so now I cannot do anythiing with my photos. How can I get to use my photos that I already have on photoshop? I am just now  signing up for an account on Photoshop.

    Bryant,
Your photos aren't stored in Photoshop. They are stored on the hard drive, they only open in Photoshop.
Check your hard disk for the photos you're searching for.

  • Working with "Offline" images

I'll be installing Aperture 3 in the next few days, and have decided to use a referenced image library since I've already invested significant time organizing my photos on external drives. I have a library of approximately 20,000 images, split more or less equally between digital photos and scanned images (mostly scanned negatives and slides). Since I won't always have access to my external drives, I'd like to make productive use my time when not "connected" to my images. I understand Aperture will allow metadata work on these offline files. A couple of quick questions:
    1. My full image library (the 20k I reference above) can be split into 3 distinct groups (essentially separate Aperture Libraries), but I may find the need to use images from across these groups for different projects (photobooks, etc.). Can this be accomplished easily if the images are in different libraries? Do the performance benefits of smaller, separate libraries out weight the benefits of having everything accessible in one Library?
    2. I'd love to be able to play with the metadata when I'm on the road (adding keywords, adding dates to scanned images, etc). What metadata is not available for update when the images are offline? More specifically, does Aperture allow one to work on Faces & Places when offline?
    3. My Master image file structure is currently date based (Year and Month). If I find that I need to move images from one folder to another (I realize, for example, that a scanned photo was actually shot in 1943, and is in a folder for 1944), what's the best way to move the photo while preserving the link to the metadata file? Does Aperture have features to help organize (move / delete / rename, etc.) referenced Masters?
    Thanks.

Hi Max. A few specific answers and a suggestion.

The "since" is something you should consider. See my comment at the end.
I have a library of approximately 20,000 images, split more or less equally between digital photos and scanned images (mostly scanned negatives and slides).
That is not actually very many. Current hardware and software can handle that easily.

No. All containers in Aperture hold images +from the Library+ which holds the container. In order to have images in a photobook, they must be in the Library.
Do the performance benefits of smaller, separate libraries out weight the benefits of having everything accessible in one Library?
No, not at the scale of your Library.
    2. I'd love to be able to play with the metadata when I'm on the road (adding keywords, adding dates to scanned images, etc). What metadata is not available for update when the images are offline?
    None, iirc.

    Yes.

Yes. You can move, delete, rename Masters easily from within Aperture. In point of fact, every file operation on a Masters should be done from within Aperture. It's a DAMS -- it does not like it when you use other programs to manage the assets you have committed to manage with Aperture.
Masters are moved using the command "File→Relocate Masters".
    Thanks.
Here's what you have to think about and plan for. Because useful tools were scarce and under-developed, users were forced to rely on +File Managers+ in order to do +image management+. With Aperture 3, image management has come of age. Using Aperture, you no longer need to use +file management+ to create +image management+ utility.
In fact, I highly recommend that you do not -- and further that you embrace the capabilities Aperture gives you and replace almost all thoughts of file management with plans for image management.
I have several (longish) posts on this subject -- I'd like to think reading them is helpful. The short version is that with Aperture the primary storage and access structure you create (which shows on the Library tab of the Inspector) is for your images. There are very effective, robust tools to customize this to present a degree of utility un-achievable with a +file manager+. The tools are the various containers, the sorting options, and the filtering options. The only "rule" you need to keep in mind is:
    • Every Master must be in a Project, and can be in +only one+ Project.
In practice, making Project equal to "shoot" makes observing this rule trivial (and also makes Aperture easy to use).
Aperture has built-in at both the image-level and the Project-level date and time sorting. +There is no reason at all to create an image storage and access structure based on date.+ This is worth emphasizing: you cannot use Aperture and not have a complete, robust, useful date and time storage and retrieval structure for every image and every Project. It's built in. Recreating it with your Library is redundant. Redundancy is wasteful.
The secondary storage and access structure is for your files. With a Library consisting of only Managed Masters, Aperture does this for you -- there is nothing for you to do. With Referenced Masters, you are responsible for the filing structure of your Masters. Think carefully about what you actually need from the file storage structure, given that you are going to develop a fully-customized image storage and retrieval structure within Aperture. My conclusion was that for photographs taken by me, all of my needs were met by putting them together in one folder (with no shots not taken by me) and file them all into sub-folders by Y/M/D. After making a couple of settings, Aperture does this automatically. The other set of images I manage are "shots not taken by me". These go into either a general folder ("Others Shots") or client-specific folders ("JaneDoeInc"). (Note: these last are not shots taken by me for a client, they are shots taken by a client and included in a Library I administer.) Those folders, too, are grouped by sub-folders as Y/M/D. The only reason I have created three distinct folder "trees" is because I need to administer (primarily back-up) each of them differently. Back-up of Referenced Masters is NOT done within Aperture. Your planning of your Referenced Masters file folder structure should be guided by your file administration needs (again, this is primarily about backing up the files you administer). The only file adminstration need I had was to keep separate my shots, some clients shots, and other "not my" shots.
You can -- and likely should -- leave your current Finder folder trees intact. But you should plan on leaving that whole structure behind. *Use Aperture as a DAMS -- not as a fancy file browser.*
    Good luck. Ask questions.
