Working with photography

Hi All,
I often work with images in Illustrator when creating adverts, I know it's not the best programme for this task but I love it and use it for almost everything these days. When working with CMYK document I import a beautiful bright image do the artworking and when I save it as print ready pdf the image looks very dull and flat. Nothing like the original .ai file. I usually edit and export photos from lightroom, I'm not sure if this process is entirely rgb but there must be away to keep photos looking bright and sharp.
Any help would be much appreciated, I've thought this for years now!
Thanks,
Two screenshots, one of the exported pdf (first image) one of the image on an artboard in illustrator (second image).

I almost always open images in Photoshop, convert them to CMYK, then adjust the levels on them after saving them out of lightroom or from any other source.  Jacob is correct in the image overall brightness and saturation becomes a bit dull when converting to CMYK.  Your RGB image is getting converted to CMYK output in Illustrator.  I wouldn't recommend working in RGB in Illustrator unless you are only using it for web content.  The reason being is that blacks that are setup in RGB in Illustrator and then passed on to an offset printer will be converted to process build blacks and printers don't like this at all.    It makes the black type very hard to register on press and it usually ends up making grays come out with some sort of color cast.

I am new to Mac.  I am considering getting and airbook.  My most pressing need is to use for photography, so software program capability, display, resolution, are all important. Is an Airbook the best choice and is there a 15 inch screen coming out in the spring as I had heard rumor of?

You might enjoy this review, which specifically compares it to the MacBook Pro:

Since you will be working with photography, performance and display resolution will be equally important.
As for future models, no one knows. We find out the moment they become available for purchase, and not one moment before. That is also the same moment speculation on the next model begins. In any event we can't engage in that here; it's contrary to the terms of use.

Adobe Creative Cloud does not support APPLE latest IOS operating system, but does allow Windows 8.1 to be accepted. This seems a shame to me, as
Apple IOS is the leader in graphics, photography. The advertising states it is usable under both APPLE IOS and Microsoft 8.1 windows operating systems. Adobe Support Chat Sooraj tells me on 02/19/2015 that i must buy two computers to have it operate on both operating systems. Adobe will not support apple's Boot CAMP allowing both operating systems.

  • W520 External Color Calibrator stopped working with updated Pantone v1.1 software

Can someone from Lenovo help me with this issue? Lenovo updated the color calibrator software in Aug 2012. They broke an external color calibrator working. L1/2 has been completely unhelpful. I also escalated to customer service with little result except that they say it is not Lenovo software and they do not have to support it! Unacceptable, the software isprovided by Lenovo. Lenovo doc also says an external color calibrator is supported. Lenovo needs to take responsibility for fixing this. Here are the email chains. I really want a refund or someone to ensure this package that Lenovo distributes is fixed!
     Thanks for your help.

    Hi Kelli,
I do not want this case closed and disagree. This is Lenovo provided software and according to Lenovo an external calibrator is supported. I want someone to take responsibility for getting this fixed. Lenovo has provided this software and needs to work with the vendor to ensure it works. Who do I need to speak to in management? I do not appreciate the way support has just shuttled this around and nothing has gotten done.
    Sincerely,

    Mr Lang,
Please be advised that I have taken this case assigned to Doris. Lenovo is not able help you with this issue, We cannot provide support for a third party product.  The calibrator you are using is supported by X-Rite; any issues with the device need to be addressed by them,
I am sorry for your frustration however Lenovo has exhausted all means to help with a non-hardware issue. At this time Lenovo is closing this case.

I work in IT and when I phone that call center I really wonder sometimes whether I am even speaking with another IT person on the other end of the line. These are Thinkpad, mines is an expensive one, and I am very upset that this is the level of support I get (especially after upgrading my warranty even!). Please see what you can do. Error with latest update to Pantone Color Calibrator Software (v1.1) and Eye one external calibrator   09-19-201211:39 AM - edited 09-20-201209:10 AM Hi. Can someone have a look at the Pantone 1.1 package. I am using an eye one display calibrator with the updated Pantone software and the calibration does not work. I get an error about an 8 bit image missing (have attached a screenshot). The calibration is not correct and Windows Photoviewer is pink. This was working OK with the v1.0 of the software (no longer on the w520 driver page). The error message is "There was an error loading the specified profile. Please make sure the image has an embedded profile and it is an 8-bit image." This was working fine before the update to v1.1. Thanks

    I am getting the runaround!!!
    Hi Doris,
I just left you a voice mail. One of the reasons I bought this laptop was for 3d photography. If I cannot use an external color calibrator and display then the laptop is not fit for purpose for the reasons I bought it. This software is ONLY available from Lenovo. According to Lenovo’s own doc, and the software’s doc, an external color calibrator is SUPPORTED. Lenovo needs to step to the plate and fix this. Not ME. If Lenovo needs to go to Pantone, or x-rite, then they Need to do that. Lenovo provided software that is not available to the public from x-rite or Pantone, and the software is to support Lenovo provided hardware (least so far as the internal calibrator), this software ALSO supports an external calibrator for use with an external display. The software supports both internal and external, and I would like to use my external display for 3d photography. This needs to be fixed please.
What are we going to do to resolve this? At his point of the runaround I’ve been getting I would like a complete refund.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

    Hi Kelli,
As you know the ‘software’ purchase is by virtue of purchasing the laptop with the color calibrator. Are you saying you will refund my cost for the calibrator? I don’t think you quite get how much time I have spent with support with this laptop. I have had multiple issues with the it. The calibrator, failed BT adapter, Sudden Shutdown syndrome (where the machine would just shutoff on its own –well documented in the Lenovo forums and I have at least a dozen emails on this issue) as well as many issues with the Displayport connection and an external 3d display for which I spent months working with Nvidia to resolve. This laptop has wasted a huge amount of my time. The support has been atrocious.
I would like a refund for 1. The laptop 2. The external color calibrator I cannot use because the software from Lenovo does not work (this package is NOT available from x-rite as well –It is sold to Lenovo). I have a receipt for the color calibrator and would be happy to provide that.
    Thank you,
    Christopher

  • Slimbox not working with Spry Dataset

    Hi there,
I'm trying to populate a page with Spry Dataset and use Slimbox2 to show a set of 4 images when a thumbnail is clicked.
The original webpage WITHOUT Spry Dataset is here:
    http://shadowmuseum.com/portfolio/p-web.html
Currently it works with just slimbox, but as soon as I add a Spry Dataset, the large images won't load anymore. When a thumbnail is clicked on, it opens the 1st large image of the set in a new page, completely removing the lightbox effect.
I've scouted the internet for solutions; it's been suggested that slimbox doesn't work because spry doesn't have time to load the content first. But I'm not savvy with javascript at all, so have no idea how to work around it....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.

  • PS CS5 - Working with Variables | The Complete Picture with Julieanne Kost | Adobe TV

In this episode of The Complete Picture, Julieanne demonstrates the incredible power of Variables in Photoshop. Learn how to cut hours of time out of your production time when you need to combine text and photographs. Although this feature has been in Photoshop for many releases, only a small number of customers know if it’s immense power for tasks such as automating event photography, creating web banners and graphics.
    http://adobe.ly/A1tzfO

Struggling with my .png's in variables.  They are sizing up against the previous dataset and shrink.  By the 5th or 6th in my set of datasets, I'm working with a tiny version - very lo-res.  Jpg's are no problem as are .png's that are a set size (i.e. 4x5).  Only my cutout PNG's with transparency around them are an issue.  Thoughts on how to keep the size from shrinking?
    thank you

  • Working with a smart object

I just watched a tutorial for the new blurs in Photoshop CS6.  They instructed to convert the pic to a smart object.  But when I did that the iris, field and tilt shift blurs were not being allowed to be applied.  Any suggestions as I am not that familiar with working with smart objects

The feature you want isn't in 13.0.1. You need Creative Cloud Photoshop 13.1.2 for Blur Gallery as Smart Filter attached to Smart Object.

  • Working with audio

    Hi,
I've got a couple upcoming projects that will largely be focussed around music, and animating photography in AE in time to the music. I've checked the help guide, but can't seem to get preview with audio functioning properly. Is this even possible in AE?
At the moment, all I can do is preview sound "from this point onwards" using numpad "." but I need to see the video track simutaneously, in order to fine tune the animations. What's the best way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Danny

Yes it is possible, you can work with audio and you can play it back of course, use the RAM preview button.
But, AE is not the best program to work on Audio with. In fact most people I know and myself, avoid using Audio in AE at all costs. Now it's case of what you like, some don't mind audio in AE, but for most, the response times and additional features when working with multiple layers of audio just aren't good enough.

  • Keynot does not work with Lion OSX 10.7.2

First there was the problem with the hidden Library/application Support/iWeb/domaines, which is an important problem for me as I use my web site to show people what kind of work that I do (videos with still photography); now there's the problem with Keynote, which does not even open with Lion OSX 10.7.2. Up until now, I was using Keynote to do my video projections in small town halls. I use Protools for the sound and Final Cut (that's another problem!) for the photos and then do a Quick Time session which I put in Keynote. It was working just fine - until Lion came along.
It seems to be well known that Apple is going to discontinue iWeb (let's not talk about what they did to Final Cut) - and now it looks like they've got plans for Keynote as well. It looks like the solution is either to use PowerPoint rather than Keynote, or to downgrade back to Snow Leopard. I'm tempted to change to PowerPoint just to keep in the race, but where is Apple taking us? I'm not sure that what Apple want's us to do is really good for us! But is it realistic to hang on to Snow Leopard? Are the PCs better or are they doing the same thing? It almost seems as if there were commercial agreements between those who run everything...but that's another story - or is it?
    Théo

Yes, it should work with Lion.  It does for lots of folks.
Are you getting an error message of some sort?  If so, see #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, try re-selecting it, via Time Machine preferences.
Or try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in the Troubleshooting article.
Or reset the TC itself, per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728

  • Working With AVI

I am considering buying an Olympus Pen E-P1 camera. The software and info on the Olympus site appears to be PC only. I am assuming that I should be able to import RAW or JPEG files for still images fairly easily into iPhoto or Aperture but I cannot find any info as to whether or not the movie format of the camera will work automatically with iMovie 09 or FCE and whether they easily transfer to the Mac. The format is described as AVI Motion JPEG.
Anyone able to clarify the situation for me (I ain't buying the camera if it won't work with Leopard)

True it is double the price but I think the price is probably about right considering the 14-140mm lens which has quiet focusing/aperture etc which is well suited to video. The Pen is more of a still camera which can also do some limited HD video whereas the GH1 is more dedicated to video which is important to me. On top of that there is the electronic view finder and the swiveling LCD screen and built in flash.
I looked long and hard at the E-P1. I like it a lot, but in the end the GH1 does suit my photography needs better. It seems that you are happy with the Pen. Most people with them love them a lot.
Meanwhile the RAW issue with Aperture. Have you used the Apple Feedback system to complain/request RAW support for the Olympus E-P1 and Panasonic GH1? I will be putting in my feedback regarding both cameras and pointing out that I will go to Adobe Lightroom unless we get support.
Here is the feedback link for Aperture:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
I expect that it takes time for new cameras to gain support and both cameras are very new and it could be that support is already in the works. Feedback will remind them that it is actually necessary.

  • Spectraview ii stopped working with 10.7.5 update

Hi I have an NEC MultiSunc 2690WUXi2 monitor using Spectraview ii to calibrate it, each of which was working
fantastic until I updated my Mac yesterday from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5
I am using a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Mac with an Nvidia GeForce GT 120 graphics card.
I now get Spectraview detecting the monitor but unable to communicate with it.
It's really urgent that I fix this problem since my work is color sensitive.
I was using Spectraview version 1.1.12.1 just fine before the upgrade.
Afterwards, I tried downgrading Spectraview a couple levels to 1.1.10, and
then down to 1.1.09.1 and none of those can communicate, although they all
    detect the monitor.
I also checked my DVI cable with which I'm attached to the computer and got a
new DVI-D dual link cable since the older one was DVI-D single link.  The dual
link DVI-D did not solve the problem.
Does anyone know of a way to fix this?  It's a huge problem!
    Nadine

Hi J, thanks for posting the link!  I actually did come across that same site and thread, but only after I made the update.  This is a huge problem for anyone in photography/art.
Talking with NEC support, they told me they are working with Apple on the issue but there is no timeframe on the fix.  They said the only thing to do is revert back to previous 10.7.4 using Time Machine.  I'm going to try to do this on my Mac Pro this weekend.  I've never done that before so crossing my fingers!
I wish I could help you with a fix.  In the meantime, the input on your monitor will remember the last previous progam from your saved color profile.  This helped me out a ton in finishing up some work today.  Cycle through the inputs until you get to the program one, and it will adjust.  It's not ideal but it's something.
I also did come across this thread that was a bit similar.  After having trouble with Mountain Lion, someone tried using a Gefen DVI Detective Plus to connect this same monitor to their graphics card on a Mac Pro.  It solved a hardware problem for them, but they don't mention using Spectraview with the device and setup.  It might be something to look into though?
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19299293#19299293
I really hope Apple and NEC can figure this out soon!
