Working with powerbook and imac TOGETHER ??!

Is it somehow possible to use my powerbook as a keyboard for the imac (i like the powerbook a lot more for typing)
or is it even possible to connect powerbook and imac in that way that i can type at the powerbook, use the imac as computer and having BOTH screens available as one big screen?
any suggestions or just impossible??

"Is it somehow possible to use my powerbook as a keyboard for the imac (i like the powerbook a lot more for typing) "
I guess nothing is impossible as long as you have the skills to take apart a PB and do A LOT of modifications. Well, I don't, you I'll focus on the real world options..
1. The only way would be to create a network and use VLC, which is taking control of your iMac remotely via your powerbook. You can use the build in Apple Remote Desktop client (well, actually it's a server, since it's providing the information) and a VLC viewer like Chicken of the VLC (search www.versiontracker.com). I would work, no doubt about that, yet it would be overkill if you asked me.
2. You mean having both screens work as one big screen? No way. You'd have to get an external display. PBs officially support a dual monitor set up. In iMacs it's disabled for marketing reasons (Apple wants to distinguish between avar. user and pros). You can enable it using "screen spanning doctor". It will work, yet you might loose your warranty for doing unsupported modifications.

  • Has anyone worked with NetSupport and Labview together?

    Hello,
I am looking for some info on NetSupport (remote desktop software) and LabVIEW together, we run a monitoring station using NetSupport to log into different locations and I have built programs for analyzing data after it has been transfered from the NetSupport login but was looking for some capabilities to integrate some functionality between the two programs, maybe even view the NetSupport login sessions via LabVIEW. is this possilbe and is it a good/bad idea.
    thanks

    Hi Jordan,
Actually I am trying to connect to a remote server to view and possibly transfer files similar to a remote desktop connection. Ideally I would have a program that would open .csv files and analyze the data, we have been using NetSupport to connect and then doing a file transfer then running an application (labview) to open the file and analyze, however It would be nice to do this without having to connect and then transfer the files and then running the app. Can I build an app that will be able to connect to remote servers and open the files? does this make sense or am I rambling\repeating myself
    Thanks in advance

  • Trying to connect my iMac to on 10.8.2 with PowerBook Intel on 10.5.8; sharing works from PowerBook to iMac but not the other way around. Why?

Trying to connect my iMac to on 10.8.2 with PowerBook Intel on 10.5.8; sharing works from PowerBook to iMac but not the other way around. Why?

Thanks for the interest. Preferences are similar on both machines: screen sharing, file sharing, printer sharing & scanner sharing all ticked and radio button for Screen Sharing is ON.
My confusion is that I can get a network connection to the iMac by selecting "go to server" on the PowerMac running 10.5.8 but am unable to make the iMac connect to the PowerMac using similar selections. When ethernet cable is plugged in the PowerMac shows up on the finder bar on the iMac, but it does not allow either screen sharing or connection to occur - a dialog box tells me to check System Prefs and Network connection.
I'm hoping to export a large file of photos from iPhoto on my iMac to my wife's PowerMac and hoped to achieve this with an ethernet network connection.

    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

Yes you can. In iPhoto create a Album with the photos you want in it. You can drag them from your Events folder. In iTunes with your iPad connected go to Photos by cliking on your iPad. You can then select the album or events you want.

There is nothing to do, unless you buy a new computer.
Mac OS 10.5.8 or later is required.

  • Memory Stick works with G4 and G3 but not G5 iMac

I have a memory stick that connects correctly with a G3 iBook and G4 iMac but not a G5 iMac. When plugged into a G5 USB port, the memory stick appears on the desktop but not the Finder. Doubleclicking on the desktop icon generates a Finder window in which the memory stick appears in the second column from the left along with the other icons in the top half of the leftmost column. Clicking on the icon for the memory stick in that Finder window fails to open it. The File menu has a item for ejecting the memory stick, but ejection does not result. I have also tried without success to drag the icon to the trash. So I just physically remove it, which produces a message saying the device was not properly removed.
Any ideas for enabling this memory stick (which has admittedly been through the wars) to work with the G5 iMac? Thanks

    Thanks for the suggestions, Charles.
The G5 keyboard is Bluetooth so I've been plugging the memory stick into the back of the machine.
I've repaired permissions on the G5. I tried to repair the memory stick in Disk Utility but elicited only the spinning beachball. As I was typing this I realized I hadn't tried repairing the disk (i.e., the memory stick) on another computer. I did, and after a few seconds the screen said no repairs necessary.
The memory stick did eject the first time I plugged into the G5 after that. But the other problems remained. And then when I plugged it back in, it no longer ejected electronically. So I'm back where I was.

There's iOS apps for iOS which is what iPods, iPads, and iPhones use.  Then there are Mac Apps (which is a different store) which is what run on a computer with OSX.

  • Anyone with a new iPod Shuffle that works with Powerbook G4 OSX 10.3.9 ???

I just bought the new iPod Shuffle also and my Mac OSX 10.3.9 operating system is not recognizing the iPod. This is a big issue since they are supposed to be compatible.
I called AppleCare 2 times and spent 1hr+ at the Apple Store Genious Bar. Here's the deal ... basically the new iPod Shuffle is NOT compatible with 10.3.9 ... I would guess you are having the same issue. My iPod Shuffle works fine with Tiger OS. The Genious Bar tested my computer with Tiger OS to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue and the iPod Shuffle worked fine ... but not with 10.3.9. This is definately an operating system compatibility issue.
Let me know if anyone has the same issue or better yet ... if you iPod works with Powerbook G4 OSX 10.3.9.
    TS

I too purchased a new Shuffle and could not get it to work with any software on my PowerBook G4 running the latest Panther (10.3.9). (Only the Disk Utility could see the Shuffle.) I also tried it on my PowerMac G5 running the latest Panther Server, and my PowerMac G4 running the latest Tiger. Given that multiple hardware AND OS configurations were failing, I had to conclude that it was some errant software I had installed on all 3 machines. (As an additional indicator, NONE of my machines would play DVDs anymore: inserting a DVD produced the dreaded "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read.")
The culprit turned out to be the kernel extensions installed by my (older) Lexar Secure jump drive. These files are in directory /System/Library/Extensions.
    IOLexarEncryptFilter.kext
    IOSCSILexarCommandsDevice.kext
    LexarFilterScheme.kext
I do not know if it is just one of them or all 3, but I moved all of these files out of the Extensions directory and rebooted. Presto: the DVDs play and the new Shuffle can be seen by iTunes, etc.
Note that I do not necessarily recommend messing about in the the kernel extensions directory. If anyone has a better method for removing these extensions (I couldn't find anything on the Lexar support site), then I would be grateful for your input.

  • I am having trouble making TM work with my new iMac.

I'm having trouble making TM work with my new iMac.  I have an external drive, Freeagent GoFlex Drive, that is recognized on the desktop and in the drive utility.  Time machine just "spins it's wheels" and doesn't seem to transfer any information.  I have run repair disk on both drives and repair permissions.  Any ideas how I can make this thing work?

Did you format the HD first. It has to be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If you're not sure how to do this please read:

  • Will AppleWorks work with my new iMac?

    Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac / 24", 2.8 GHz, CD2, and I was just wondering if my old AppleWorks disc 6.2.9. will work with the new iMac. I am currently running 10.5.6.
Or should I use the new iWork instead?
Any information anyone could provide would be most helpful.
    John

    Hi John,
AppleWorks will run well on your new iMac.
Whether you should switch completely to iWork depends on what parts of AppleWorks you use.
iWork's biggest deficiency (as noted in Yvan's signature line) is the lack of a database application. If you use AppleWorks's database module, there is nothing in iWork that will replaces it (although iWork '09 does have some list management and merge capabilities). You may also find some difficulty transfering Paint and Draw documents.
Other than that, the change should be pretty easy. iWork applications will open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing (Pages), Spreadsheet (Numbers) and Presentation (Keynote) documents. They will not open AW Draw, Paint or Database documents. Nor will they open any AW documents made with AW 5 or any version of ClarisWorks.
    Best route:
-Install AW 6.2.9 on the iMac using the installer disk or by moving the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from one machine to the other. Remember to remove AW from the old machine to stay within the single user terms of your AW licence.
-Download and install the 30 day trial of iWork '09.
-Spend some time over the next 30 days getting familiar with the iWork applications, then make your decision.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • FaceTime no longer working with Yosemite and IOS 8.1

I have used FaceTime flawlessly for some time with no issue.
After I upgraded to Yosemite on my MacBookAir and IOS8.1 on 5S and iPad air, I've had a problem connecting.
When I get a call, all the devices ring (as they should) but it will not connect on the first device I pick up on.  It says connecting
but all the other devices keep ringing and finally it says I have a missed call.  The connection does not happen.  If I turn off
all devices except one, it will work...... do we have a bug here??

Thank you for responding to my issue.  I spent the better part of two hours trying to get this to work.  Bluetooth is enabled on all devices. Each computer is set in Preferences/General to allow Handoff.  All computers and iPhones are on the same WiFi network.  I toggled all of the major settings off and on.  Rebooted each of my computers several times. I finally conceded defeat.  Then my daughter asked to have a try at it.  She worked on the first MBP for about thirty minutes and informed me that she had gotten continuity to work.  And indeed, on her MBP late 2012 she is able to use the continuity features in both directions between her computer and her iPhone 6.  But it only works with Mail and Safari.  I asked how she accomplished this feat.  She said she turned off "everything" on her computer and iPhone (WiFi, Bluetooth, "Allow handoff" under Preferences/General) and then rebooted both the iPhone and the computer.  She then turned everything back on.  This worked for her.  So we tried the same thing on my MBP and iPhone 6.  Now continuity works partially. Email activity is mirrored on both the MBP and the iPhone regardless of which device initiates the continuity activity.  But Safari activity on the computer is mirrored on the iPhone but not in the opposite direction.  There is no continuity function for Pages in either direction.  The telephone connectivity works fine on all of my devices– 3 MBPs, Mac Pro, iPad Air, 2nd gen iPad and 3rd gen iPad.
