Working with subset of library on another computer

I've read what I think are the relevant parts of the Aperture User Manual, especially pages 40-42. I'm posting here in hope of getting confirmation that what I'm about to do makes sense and will work.
My main, rather large library of raw files is on my iMac (and is backed up using Time Machine). I'm happy to work on the iMac most of the time but I would like also to be able to do some work on my Macbook Air. I can think of two ways to do this.
Plan A: Dropbox
One method would be to use Dropbox. I have enough storage in my Dropbox account itself (about 125GB, most of it presently free space). And using Dropbox in this way would ensure that my files continue to be backed up, in fact, it would make them extra safe, because they'd get backed up to Time Machine and synced to Dropbox's servers (and my laptop). The main problem with this approach is that I'm kind of in a hurry right now, and syncing, say, a 40GB Aperture library to Dropbox would take a good while — perhaps a day or two. All that data has to be uploaded from my iMac to Dropbox's servers, and then synced from there (i.e. downloaded) to the Dropbox folders on my Macbook Air.
I understand quite well that I wouldn't want to work on the library simultaneously (or even close to simultaneously) from both computers, because it would confuse Dropbox's sync methods. But I wouldn't do that.
Plan B: Portable hard drive
The other approach I'm considering is to export selected projects to an Aperture library (with originals) and put the library on a portable 50GB hard drive. I could plug the drive into my MBA to work on projects there. Then I could dismount it and plug it into the iMac to work there. Eventually I'd use the File > Merge Libraries command to get the remote library back into the iMac's master library.
I don't think I'd be risking too much using this method. As I understand it, exporting a library from Aperture on my iMac (with originals) essentially makes a second copy of everything. So even if the portable hard drive failed and became unrecoverable (unlikely, but if), I might lose any edits I'd done in the library on the portable drive, but at least the original raw files would still be on my iMac (along with any edits I'd made in Aperture prior to the export of the library).
Does this all make sense? I'm leaning toward Plan B (external portable drive) because of its speed.
Thanks,
Will

Plan B is the safer solution.
Plan A is tempting, but afaik, syncin Aperture libraries in Dropbox is not yet supported. Dropbox can sync files, but syncing the Aperture library package can break the links between edited versions and original images. This may change soon. The Beta version of Dropbox promises to be able to sync iPhoto libraries, so it may be available for Aperture libraries soon, see: http://petapixel.com/2013/06/08/dropbox-beta-now-lets-mac-users-import-iphoto-li braries-and-share-screenshots/
Do you have the same user name on both your macs? If not, set the "ignore Ownership on this volume" flag for the drive you are using to store your exported library.

  • Will 1st gen ipod touch still work with new itunes library on new computer (transfer didn't work from old computer)

Ok, so I have a new computer and wanted to transfer my itunes library from my old computer. I could not get the files to transfer. I downloaded the newest version of itunes and see that I can download my previously purchased music to the new computer. I have mp3's that I can add in on my own so I don't have a problem starting over in itunes.
My question is what happens when I plug in my 1st gen ipod touch and try to sync??? Will it erase what is on my ipod or will I be able to move the stuff from my ipod into my new itunes library?? Any info would be great...I'm happy with how my ipod is set up so I really don't want to mess with a good thing. Also, will I need to update and of my software on my ipod since it's 1st generation??
    Thanks for the help!!

You can only sync to one iTunes library/computer. If you do sync the iPod is erases and its contents replaced with what is in the iTunes library of the second computer.
    To avoid that see:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
Yes, the 1G works with the latest iTunes.
    To transfer iTunes purchases:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

I am having trouble with syncing my iPhone to another computer because the computer that my iPhone is currently synced with is not working

You can sync/manually mange iphone with one and only one computer.  If you sync/manually mange to anther, then it will erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer.
    What "trouble" are you having?

  • How to view aperture library from another computer on network?

    Hi,
I'd like to simply view (not edit) my aperture library from another computer on my home network. The aperture library resides on a mac pro, and I'd like to see the images on a macbook pro to show family members. On the surface, this seems like a simple concept - as Apple TV can do this with home sharing. Further, itunes can share it's library in this manner.  Is this possible?
    thank you,
    T

You don't mention which OS you're using and I understand that Lion has changed some of the sharing features but  what you are looking to do is doable.
Be warned that accessing an Aperture library over a network is slow and definitely not something you want to do if editing except in an emergency and you want to make triple sure that only one user is accessing the library at a time.  But I regularly access libraries over wireless when I'm to lazy to walk across the house and need to check somthing out.
If you are using Snow Leopard go into System preferences->Sharing and tune on file sharing on the the Mac Pro. If you have the same user name on both systems you should have no problem accessing the library from the MBP.
If you're on Lion, you'l need to lok up how to enable file sharing. I haven't swithced so I can;r help you there.
    good luck

  • Open iTunes Library on another computer

My entire music library is on my external hard drive. I'm going away for the summber and obviously I can't take my iMac with me. But I've got PB. And, I'd like to open my music library in my PB exactly like I do on my iMac, i.e. same play count, same import date, etc... The reason I ask this is because the only way I know how to open the music library on another computer, is to import the entire library again, which will not retain all that information (play count, etc). So, how do I do that?

Here's the trick. On your PB, Rename your user/music/iTunes folder (something like iTunesb or anything similar). When you launch iTunes, it will freak out and tell you that it can't find your music library and ask you to "point to" the correct location. From there simply navigate to your iTunes folder on your ext. drive and bingo..... Of course, this means that you must have the drive mounted whenever you launch iTunes. Also, you will have to "authorize" the PB to play your purchased music.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • I've moved my Aperture library to another computer, and masters are referencing an old path name.  How can I update these references?  Reloctating masters does not work in this case :(

I've moved my Aperture library from one computer to another using Finder.
I merged the library with one which was already on the computer.
Now, the photos I imported have reference to the old path name on my old computer.
How can I update these references as "Relocate Masters" does not work in this case?

Just one suggestion to be able to reconnect all at once:
Create a smart album containing the images with missing masters:
File -> New ->  Smart Album,     and add a rule: File Status is "Missing"     (or File Status is "offline")
Then select the images in this album and go to the File menu:
and select:   File -> Locate referenced File
If you are lucky, Aperture will reconnect all at once, if you point the first image version to its counterpart.

  • Transferring my Itune account (with song library) to another computer

I need to transfer my Itune to another computer which I am going to connect the same ipod. How am I going to do it so that I will still have my songs?
    Thanks.

I don't have Match but I think it just deals with iTems on an individual basis.
    There is:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
The above places the whole library on a different computer but is a bit much to do on a regular basis.
