Workplace Music Solution needed - is an Apple TV the answer?

Hi.
I have a design studio with 11 designers using the space, all on apple desktops or laptops and most have iphones.
I want to set up a centrally acessible speaker system so everyone can log-in and decide what music to play.
This would need to include output from iPlayer streams, Spotify and Last.fm as well as iTunes which is why I thought out Airport Express might not work without AirFoil or similar.
Is an Apple TV the answer?
I was in the apple store today and one of the assistants mentioned it had a "party mode" that multiple iOS clients could use?
Will this work for multiple Lion and Snow Leopard users as well?

We use iTunes DJ (Party mode) like this at work sometimes. I don't know that you can control it from a Mac but it works from iOS devices. Basically you would have a Mac running iTunes hooked up with a cord to the stereo system. People then would use their iPads/iPhones/iPod touches to suggest songs to play that are on the main itunes library.
You could also use AirPlay on the Central iTunes computer (an old mac in a server room, for example) and use an Airport Express to receive the stream and be connected to the stereo with a cord.
Apple TV only allows optical audio or HDMI output, so that is a limitation for you.
There may be other ways to do this, but that is the easiest way I can think of.

Submitting to film festivals, need BEST quality! iDVD the answer?

I'm submitting my short film to festivals and need to burn DVDs of it to send!
My short is in a .mov format (compressed at 1.63 GB). I burned a copy of it with iDVD and the quality was much worse than the compressed file's quality. Is there a better way to do it, or different application that would be a better choice?

Get Roxio Toast 10 Titanium Pro. If I'm not mistaken it now also includes an excellent app called Fotomagico which is highly recommended on this iDvd forum. Essentially you get two GREAT apps for the price of one.

Only Vodaphone can authorize the unlocking of this phone. Apple can't/won't help you.
However, Vodaphone, like most carriers, will only authorize unlocking for customers, obviously not you. You need to get your friend to request that Vodaphone authorize the unlocking of this phone.

Need to purchase books from the American App Store!

I have a Saudi Visa credit card and I can't purchase iBooks when I switch to my American App Store account.
The Saudi iBookStore only has very old and classic books.
Any solutions?

All content (ibooks, apps, music etc) is supplied to Apple by the content providers to sell on a country-by-country basis (they want control over where their content is sold), each country therefore has to have its own store, and you have to be in a country (and have a billing address in that country on your account) to use its store. You can try requesting that the books be added to the Saudi store, but without the rights-holders agreement Apple wont be able to sell it there : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html (as fas as I can see no paid-for books are currently available in the Saudi store, I assume that so far not enough publishers have agreed to let Apple sell paid-for books there)
If you are trying to use the US store when not in the US then you violating the store's terms that you have agreed to - Apple could potentially permanently disable the account.

That's simply not possible I'm afraid. You'd need to give them their own account and allowance or make it so you are required to be there to input the password when they wish to make a purchase.

Music bought with a defunt apple ID

I have a couple albums bought years ago under a now defunct apple ID. This was the family account, which no longer exists. I simply started using my own six years ago or so. My old laptop (7.5 years!) was authorized under both, so there was never any issue. I recently bought a new laptop, but the authorizations did not transfer automatically. While I easily authorized the new computer for iTunes under my current Apple ID, I cannot do so for the old account. This may be because I no longer remember the password for the old account, but it is more likely that it is defunct. The email for it no longer exists, while no new email was ever attached to it. So every so often now I get a prompt to enter a password for a dead account, and cannot listen to that music. Very frustrating!
The same defunct account caused related issues on another computer in the household, but the associated apps were free. So, I simply reinstalled them. It looks like I need to pay Apple again to perform the same procedure with the music. That may total up to 30$ or more, and that's after locating the music under the defunct account. Do I have any other options?

Click here and ask the iTunes Store staff for assistance. If they tell you to buy the music again, accept it.

How do I play music on my hifi with apple tv?
I want to stream music from my iPad and iPod touch to my amplifier.

Does your amplifier have HDMI ?
I connect my ATV2 to my amplifier using HDMI cable and then an HDMI cable out to the TV...
This works great for me as I don't have to have the TV on to listen to music from my stereo...
If you don't have HDMI or Optical in on your amplifier, you would need an adapter as mentioned above...

Need a new Apple id for my daughter, but have a question first.

My daughter had an ipod touch and we used my wife's apple id to put songs on it.
Now we just bought her a new iphone and think its time she had her own apple id. If she creates one, can we still put her music from her ipod onto her phone?

If the music purchased for your daughter is housed in the same iTunes Library that your music is in, and the same library that she will be putting her purchases in (i.e., a single iTunes library on a single computer), then she can download any music in that library to her devices.
My husband and I share a single iTunes Library on his Macbook Pro. He logs onto iTunes and buys stuff. I log onto iTunes and buy stuff. All of the music in our library is set up to go into Smart Playlists so we don't have all the music on everything. I have smart Playlists for Christmas, for my Nano, for my husband's iPod, for my iPad, etc.
When we plug in our various devices for syncing, we go to the Music tab and tell it what Playlists we want loaded onto that particular device.
Since music isn't updated, there really is no need to know or use the purchasers ID (unless a re-download was needed). The only thing that I have found that requires me to use his ID is updating apps.
So, if you all are sharing the same Library, then she can continue to get any music you purchased for her when she syncs her device to that Library.

You can use different ID's for iTunes and iCloud.
Just delete the account in settings > iCloud and create them their own account.
if the children are minors, you wiil need to create and be responsible for each account yourself.

If you go to Apple, they will not replace your battery, but exchange your iPod for a refurbished iPod of the same model with a new battery. Therefore you will lose everything that is not backed up. If you change it yourself or have a third party change it, you will most likely not lose anything (but still best to make a backup as lllaass suggested).

The iphone warranty is not international. It is based from the original country of purchase. You will need to ship to someone you know in the Canada to bring it to Apple for evaluation. Then that person will have to ship the phone back to you. Shipping and insurance will be at your expense. In the terms of the iphone warranty:

Music Gone from 1st Gen Apple TV after iTunes upgrade to 10.1.1 (4)

I use a 1st Gen Apple TV to store and play all my music throughout my home. It's perfect for that because I don't have to stream from my computer (as with 2nd Gen Apple TV) and can control the music from all over the house from the Remote App on my iPad and iPhone. After I upgraded to iTunes 10.1.1 this week I synced my Apple TV with my computer to add some new music to it from iTunes. All of my music promptly disappeared from my Apple TV. It may have still been there, but didn't show in iTunes on my computer or on my iPad or iPhone remote apps.
My first thought was that I might have to do a restore on the Apple TV and then re-sync with my computer's iTunes. Before doing that, however, I simply re-synced all of my music to the Apple TV from my computer. It worked and now all of the music is available again.

went to the appletv's settings and unlinked it with the computer
let it do it's restart and clear synced data
set it up to link with the same computer once more
and let it sync the data once more
haven't have issues since
but described the solution to many in this forum who had the same issue
