Workround for Smart Playlist bug in iTunes 6.0.5

I'm using iTunes 6.0.5 on MacOS 10.2.8 (hence I can't upgrade iTunes to a later version 'cos my OS is too old).
When I try to use Smart Playlists, the program closes down whenever I create a Playlist featuring a date-type condition (like "Last Played") and change from "is" to something else (like "is not in the last" ... ). This seems to be a bug common whenever iTunes 6.0.5 is used on MacOS 10.2.8.
Is there any work-around for this problem? (The computing administrator here is unlikely to allow me to upgrade the OS just so that I can play music more conveniently!) If it were possible to make copies of Smart Playlists, then I might be able to adjust the standard "Recently Played".
Thanks (hopefully!) in advance,
Martyn

ih1, that one is often caused by a damaged itunes preference file. try the technique described in this user tip:

  • Workaround for iPhone smart playlist bug

There is a bug (do a search for smart playlist in this forum) with smart playlists not displaying the correct songs on the iPhone.
I just tried something that seems to have worked...
I have a playlist in iTunes called "Recently Added" which I want to keep synced with my iPhone.
I created a new smart playlist called "Recently Added (iPhone)". The playlist has one rule: "Playlist is Recently Added" with live updating checked.
I now sync this second playlist with the iPhone and all the correct songs show up in it.

    Excellent idea Jeff.
Your approach works for the same reason that my original idea works.
The inclusion of another playlist as a condition in a smart playlist, causes the playlist to become "rasterized" or static.
The developers wanted smart playlists to be really smart - instead of copying a static list of songs from the smart playlist to the iPhone/Pod, they simply send the definition of the playlist to the iPhone and let it calculate which songs from it's own library belong on it.
The nice thing about their approach is that the playlists will continue to live update on the Phone in-between syncs - so if you have a playlist called "Last 25 played" it will have the last 25 played songs on your iPhone, instead of the last 25 played songs that you played in iTunes.
The problem of course, is that there's a bug in the way the iPhone calculates these rules (probably related to the porting of code to a new architecture).
So why does this fix work?
Well, my theory is that when you create a smart playlist that references another playlist, iTunes simply calculates the songs that should appear on the smartplaylist and sends a literal list to the iPhone/Pod.
This solves the problem that would be created if you only sync the parent playlist, and not the playlists it references. (IE, if you would want to be able to sync the "25 most played" playlist without also having to sync the "MusicOnly" playlist).

  • Smart Playlists Sync from Itunes

    Hey all,
Whenever I connect my iphone 4 to my macbook all of the smart playlists automatically sync to my iphone, even though i have "manage music manually" selected under my iphone settings. Anyone know how i stop these playlsits from syncing to my iphone everytime i connect the phone to my macbook. Thanks

With iTunes Match enabled on an iOS device direct syncing of music via USB or Wi Fi is disabled. All music management takes place directly on the iDevice. All supported playlists are uploaded to the cloud and are available on your iDevice in the "Playlists" section."
Some criteria for Smart Playlists that are not supported are any Playlists that reference other playlists, comments, Checked. You may need to experiement a little with the smart playlists to get them just the way you want them in iOS.

  • Suggestions for Smart Playlists

Recently, I purchased an iPod Classic. As a Mac user for 2 years, I have experienced the advantages of using a Mac-based computers and its OS itself. Therefore, I trust Apple brand in whichever products they are selling and recommends to my customers, friends and relatives. However, when I was trying out the features of iTunes, like the Smart Playlist, I realised certain flaws to it.
When I was setting the rules for which type of songs to be placed into the playlist, for example, I only want Trance music only, but not the podcasts. However, no matter how I set the rules, it shows the other genres of music like Dance in the playlist, furthermore, the podcasts still shows up.
I would like to suggest to place an additional function to the Smart Playlist by adding a "DO NOT" function. For example, DO NOT place any songs like podcasts or Dance music. This way, it makes it easier for heavy users like me to place songs without thinking much of how to set the appropriate rules to it. Thank you.

  • Smart Playlists Working on iTunes 9, Not on iTouch

    Updated to iTunes 9
    Everything is fine
Except my smart playlists (Recently added, top 25 most played) are not working properly. They display as they should in iTunes 9 but when you sync it to the iPod Touch, it displays 25 random songs.
I've deleted the smart playlists, synced, remade them, synced, didn't work.
Deleted, remade them, different names, synced, didn't work.

To an extent thank goodness, I thought I was going mad.
I too have this issue with iPhone & Itunes 9.
All my smart playlists on my iphone are in random order, but the one which is bothering me the most is my 25 most played, which contains stuff I don't think I have ever played.
Looking at smart playlist on my itunes or on expanded tree for iphone when connected to itunes has the correct listing but random on my iphone.
Let hope they fix this soon.

  • Hello Experts! I am trying to match up artwork that I created for my playlists in my iTunes library which looks fine in my iTunes but then only some of my artwork shows on my iPad after using iTunes Match, I either have blank artwork or the original.

Hello Experts! • Temporary Fix for Smart Playlist order bug

I stumbled across a Smart Playlist that was keeping the correct order and discovered why.  It was a Smart Playlist that contained 2 other Smart Playlists.  The original Smart Playlists didn't keep their order but the new one that combined them did.  So I experimented on a few other Smart Playlists by making new Smart Playlists that only contained another Smart Playlist.  And it works.  I've also been able to keep Live Updating enabled.
Hopefully this will help everyone who reads this get by until Apple fixes this bug, which they seem to reintroduce about once a year.

I'm sorry but none of these suggested fixes work, including sort before sync, media kind as music, not referring to other smart playlists, turning live update off, setting Play Order; nothing worked. Plus, on large smart playlists (2000+ songs), not only were they not ordered correctly but the phone (4S no less) pauses 20 seconds to think every time you go into the playlist after a sync.
In fact the only "fix" for me was Apple's last suggestion in their KB article on the subject of smart playlists not syncing in order: in iTunes select my smart playlist, then select all, then make a new playlist (using I believe Edit/New Playlist) based on that selection (which is now not smart), order as needed and sync. It works great but of course the list is now is non-self-updating and I have to manually update it when I add new songs. Not a big deal but still a pain.
For me, order is critical only on my Recently Added playlist, so I went manual with that one. The others I tend to shuffle so the lack of ordering isn't as big of a deal.

  • Looking for Smart Playlist Documentation for iTunes Match (iCloud), and iOS

With iTunes Match I don't understand exactly how Smart Playlist's are suppose to work with iTunes Match (iCloud) and my iOS devices. I am looking for some official (possibly draft) documentation.

Is this a general rant or do you have a specific question ?

  • Smart Playlist bug?

Anyone else having this problem? My music library consists of primarily contemporary Christian music. I attempted to set a Smart Playlist that would auto update music selections in two genres of music, "Gospel" and "Gospel & Religious" as per the album tags that were associated with the selections I wanted. iTunes won't do it - I end up with only the selections that are tagged with the "Gospel & Religous" genre, it will not include the selections tagged "Gospel" in the Smart Playlist.
I've considered retagging all the files to the same genre, but would rather not. Is this an iTunes issue, or is the "&" character in the genre causing Windows to burp?
Just trying to figure it all out ...
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Dell Deskop   Windows XP Pro

    That's not a bug, RuRod. It's what we refer to as a "feature". ; - )
A Smart Playlist defined by Genre, i.e. Genre is Gospel & Religious, will include only songs identified specifically as Gospel & Religious - not Gospel and not Religious.
The solution is to change the playlist rule to either -
    1) Genre contains Gospel
    or
    2) Match any of the following rules:
    Genre is Gospel
    +
    Genre is Gospel & Religious.

  • Top 25 smart playlist bug fixes.....yay!!!!

Just noticed that with my iphone 4 & iTunes 9.2 the top 25 playlist is fixed, with live updating checked.
I must assume this is to do with iOS 4 as it was never working with 3x.
ANyone else confirm this is the case?
    John

I have a couple of issues with the iPod Touch.
    1) I have a smart playlist with the 25 most played songs in iTunes. When I sync the playlist and open it up on the iPod Touch, the playlist contains 25 random songs which are totakky different from the ones in my iTunes playlist.
    2) I have songs from Creed's Greatest Hits CD and from Queen's Greatest Hits CD. When I look for songs by artists, by songs, or by playlists I find them with no problem. But, when I look for them in Cover Flow it puts the Queen's songs under the Creed's album cover. The odd thing is that when one of those Queen's songs is playing, the cover art displayed is the correct one... and on the top it reads:
    Queen
    "Name of song"
    Greatest Hits
But if I flip the iPod to see cover flow, it'll change the cover art to Creed's cover art.

  • Smart playlists syncing between iTunes 9 and iPhone 3Gs with OS 3.1

I recently updated to iTunes 9 and iPhone OS 3.1
On my iPhone, the songs in my smart playlists are in a different order then in my iTunes. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have tried sorting them in different ways but they keep showing up the same way on the iPhone.

I am also having this problem, and anxiously awaiting a fix or a provision to revert to OS 3.0. I almost exclusively use smart playlists for listening to media on my iPhone and find this very aggravating. The "turn off live updating" solution just caused the playlist to disappear from the iPhone.
I believe this has been mentioned before, but interestingly, when my iPhone is connected and I am browsing its contents in iTunes 9, the playlists are all correct and in their correct order. While browsing at the same time on the iPhone directly, they're all messed up.

  • Are movie ratings available for smart playlists

I'm trying to make a playlist of movies by rating (not personal stars but G PG PG-13 etc...) I can't seem to find a column to filter on. Where is this meta data available?

Sorry, but that information is not directly available to use in a Smart Playlist. You could put the rating in the Comments field which would make it available for filtering in a Smart Playlist.
    Regards.

  • Smart Playlist problems after iTunes upgrade 10.6.1.7

Hi, I updated my version of iTunes to 10.6.1.7 and since then my smart playlists are not syncing to my iPhone properly. The selection of songs is scrambled, and so I have a variety of my top rated, audiobooks and other random songs. I have tried removing and resyncing the smart playlists to my iphone, but this has the same outcome. Also, the sync doesn't complete all stages so I end up with roughly half of my music from my smart playlist on my iPhone.
Not sure if this is an iTunes problem or iPhone problem, but it definitely only started after I upgraded iTunes.
Any others out there with the same issue or any suggestions?

Yepper.. got the same issue.. it is not sync'ing my Itunes play lists to my I pod touch.

  • IOS 6 Smart Playlist Bug

Hey, recently updated to iOS6. Having smart playlist issues when attempting to add songs purchased through iTunes, from the iPhone. (eg, attempting to add songs to the playlist on the handset). Adding songs to these playlists from ripped CDs works fine. Is anyone else having this problem?

I actually am having an issue with not having any playlists sync to my phone at all. All my music is there but not one playlist. But the funny thing is, if I clike on my phone within itunes to see all the content, the playlists show up and I am able to play them from my phone, from the playlist, in itunes. You are the closest one that seems to be having the same problem I am.

  • Why won't all of my smart playlists sync from itunes to my ipad?

Why won't all of my smart playlists sync? They show up in the playlist screen of my ipad music app. When I click on the playlist, there are no songs listed. I sync it again, and the playlist now shows zero songs in the list. I keep trying to sync it, and it goes back and forth from showing there are 60 songs in the playlist, which I can't play, to showing zero songs. Please help.

Yes, sorry, you are correct, it was iTunes Match. I purchased storage on iTunes Match (probably a bad idea), because I had over 1000 songs on my i-phone 4S -which is eating up my storage space. Well, anyway...After I purchased it, I followed the instructions: go to: Settings, "open" music, "Turn on" iTunes Match. After I did that, I opened up the Music App -on my phone -ALL of my playlists were gone and only 208 songs showed... I messed up my phone once before and I had to log into my i-Tunes account (on my computer) and "reset" to another date. I would like to do that again -if possible...
    Please help!
