What can I do to get iCal window to display after start-up? Works correctly if closed and re-opened.

iCal is not an app supported by Yosemite, several years ago the app was re-named to be Calendar. However to answer your problem, first restart in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift Key when you hear the startup tone until it boots into Safe Mode), you will see a Safe Mode notice in the upper right corner.
Then reboot normally and retest. Post back with the results.

I have a late 2013 iMac (21 inch - 8gb of Ram) and am running 10.10.2
After starting the iMac up and choosing Air Display it 'mirrors' webpage videos well through Apple TV.
The problems start when the Air Display 'mirroring' is turned off and then turned on again.
After Air Display 'mirroring' is turned back on the webpage videos stutter and seem to pulse or falter and the only way I can sort the issue out is to re-start the machine and put mirroring on again.
Has anyone encountered this and does anyone have any suggestions about how to sort this problem out ?

I Don't know what type of issue this is.
I Don't use the Airdisplay all that much so singing off the wifi does the trick well enough for me.
MAybe the the latest software update fixed the issue, as I said I don't use this function a lot.

I have developed a form with fields hidden by default, that become visible based on box ticked or radio button selections.
My problem is that, when I close the form and re-open it, it comes back to it's default presentation, regardless of the information already recorded in the form (including in the now hidden fields.
How to correct that

I've had the same problem. This solved it...
Go to the "Form properties..." in the File-menu. Select "Run-time" to the left and in the box "Scripting" Preserve scripting changes to form when saved: choose Automatically (Script-based state changes are saved locally in an insecure fashion. This option cannot be used for certified forms).

Mail stops checking for new mail until closed and re-opened

This problem began a month or so ago and is only getting worse by the day. I have my Mail app set to check for new mail every minute, but recently it randomly stops checking at all and displays the triangle icon next to each Inbox. I have 10 different email accounts that I use Mail to check and they are a variety of different types from Exchange servers, to IMAP accounts, to POP accounts, iCloud, Outlook.com, Gmail, etc. Part of the time only 2 or 3 inboxes are affected, while other times (more recently) it’s ALL accounts. Clicking on Get Mail doesn’t help; no new mail is downloaded. The only way to get Mail to “wake up” is to close the app and then re-open it. When I do that, there is a flood of new mail that pours in to each account that had been offline. There are never any error messages telling me that anything has happened. I just know that Mail is stuck because of the triangle icon.
Also, there are times when my busiest account mysteriously has no new messages over a few hours, which is very unusual. Closing and re-opening mail will resume downloading mail again to that account. At least for awhile...
I thought I’d solved the problem by thinking that my router was only working intermittently, so I replaced it with a new Time Capsule. The problem did not go away.
I’ve talked to Apple Support and they’ve not been any help. I’d welcome any suggestions.

Java 1.4.1 doesn't work right with Win98se and IE6SP1

I have installed the 1.4.1 runtime on two computers. On the WinXP one (with IE 6 SP1) everything works 100%. When applets are loading the Java icon is showing in the placeholder, and in the system tray. I can open the console from IE, and all applets work (also the "hot java" on download page that does not work with the Microsoft buildt in Java :-)
BUT, on the Win98se machine not everything is working. First there is no Java icon either in the applet windows nor in the system tray on most applets (like my homepage http://home.chello.no/~larse/ or my worsk page http://datafangst.ergogroup.no), I cannot open the Java console from Internet Explorer either. So I suspect it's still using the Microsoft Java. BUT even stranger, the "hot java" animation on the Sun download pages IS showing, and THEN the Java icon shows in the tray. Why is it only using the Sun Java for some applets - not all ?

I experimented some more today, trying to find out why IE is not using SunJava.
I search the registry, and found that all references to Java (even the "Sun Java Console" menu) pointed to "c:\windows\system\msjava.dll". But there was a key "Treat as" that pointed on to the SunJava plug-in object (could the problem be that Win98 doesn't understand this and still use the default MS Java).
Also tried using "Norton Registry Tracker" to track what happened when I turned on/off SunJava for IE in the Control Panel and in IE. No changes anywhere. Isn't that a bit strange too...
Finally I just took a shot and renamed "c:\windows\system\msjava.dll" just to try to get rid of the MS Java AND THEN suddenly the SunJava works everywhere, and the "Sun Java Console" menu works too...
And no matter what I configure (turn on/off Sun Java in IE, turn on/off support for IE in the Sun Java control panel...) it always use SunJava.
Haven't noticed any side-effect so far, so it works for me, but I'm quite sure this is NOT the way it is supposed to work - right ?

actually, it's more complicated. It seems none of the right-button options work: Open, open in a new window, and open in a new tab.

Safe Mode worked. Turned off hardware acceleration and it work until the next boot up, then it didn't work anymore. Made sure hardware acceleration was still off and then disabled all apps and it worked again. One-by-one, I enabled apps until all apps were again enabled. It worked with each app added. Everything still works and hasn't stopped working through about 5 boot-ups.

Audio jack not working when cover closed and hdmi connected

I have an external monitor connected via the hdmi port. My external monitor does not have built in speakers. I connect an external speaker via the headphone jack. I can play audio fine if the notebook cover is open. As soon as I close the notebook cover, the audio stops. How can I get the audio to still be sent to my external speakers with the cover closed?
I have my power settings set to "Do Nothing" when lid is closed. I don't know what else to try?

What program is playing the audio? For example, a music player or movie program? Is there no audio in any program when this happens?

Video does not restart when closed and re-opened

I have a .f4v file (Adobe Premiere) embedded into a swf. The
video is launched into an iframe when the user clicks on the link
to "See Video". When I close the iframe in Firefox and then click
on the link again to launch the video, it starts from the
beginning. In IE7, IE6 and Safari the video continues from where it
left off. I would like for it to start from the beginning like in
Firefox. Any suggestions?

Do you have a link to the video. Why are you using the iframe? I'm curious to see how this works. I have a html page with a swf with buttons that play movies on a small area on the screen it's easily controllable though I only programmed the pause button. I have the selection buttons run the small videos on roll over and a higher res larger version with swf skin with full controls - seek when you click the selection.

Poor performance and unidasd connections are getting closed and re-opened

The problem is due to the unidasd daemon looking for some orphaned
Calendar users in LDAP and it is resulting in the snc broker dropping
unidasd connections (processes that handle LDAP connections) if the
result of an LDAP search for a Calendar user comes back with no match.

For "Found dead connection" of "Service = unidas" problems, you need to correct
the process of managing the Directory Server, i.e., always shut down the Calendar
Server before shutting down the Directory Server and then starting the Calendar
Server after the Directory Server has started. Or you may need to make sure the
Directory Server is configured properly, i.e., the parameter idletimeout should
be set to zero-- never timeout-- (see article 1783 for more info),
or you need to get the Calendar Server and Directory Server back in sync.

This last point can be accomplished by using a new Calendar Server tool, unidsdiff,
to identify any user or resource objects that are out of sync and another new
Calendar Server tool, unireqchk, to identify any user or resource requests
in the CWS queue that are no longer in the directory server. Both these tools
can be downloaded from http://help.netscape.com/business/filelib.html#caltools.

IBook is not working right on IPad and iPhone!!!

Why don't the Ipad Mini don't highlight words all the time. You can always try to reset your device and see if it helps matters any:
Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

Works right if closed and re-opened.
